Transcript of Long term strategies to reduce obesity
Other ideas we will incorporate into primary schools to help reduce obesity and encourage
more healthy lifestyles for the children and their families

Removing food from canteenOur vision is to give the school canteen a
makeover Removing all food high in fat and sugar,
replacing them with new and exciting healthy options.
We will also attempt to make it affordable and accessible.
Peer supportersIn order to encourage leadership and responsibility among
the older students of the school: Older senior students will form a group called the "Healthy
Heroes”. These students will be selected for being good role models, and will be encouraged to model healthy behaviours themselves.
The “Healthy Heroes” will encourage the other children to eat healthy foods.
Each week, they will select several students that they think have been setting a good example of healthy eating, or are making a conscious effort to improve their eating and exercise habits.
During assemblies, the “Healthy Heroes” will award these students with a certificate and a badge that they are allowed to wear with their school uniform, encouraging others to follow their good example.
HomeworkHomework tasks such worksheets, reading
assignments, research, and speeches will be set on topics around healthy eating and healthy lifestyles.
Each child will also be expected to keep a food log at the beginning of each term to keep track of what they are eating. This can be analysed in class as part of class work during the year.
They will be required to set goals to improving their eating habits and parents will be notified about these goals for extra encouragement.
Parent workshopsOne night a week through out the school year,
we will run a parent workshop for that wish to learn more about the food and
environment they are providing for their families.
This will include:Healthier meal ideas and practical classesWays in which the family can exercise togetherWays in which families can work together for a
healthier future
Kids cooking classesAfter school, we will offer cooking classes for
children. They will learn how to cook and bake healthier
options to make at home with their familyWe will attempt to provide the children with
the ability and knowledge to create healthy meals with their families.
These classes will also be fun and educational, so the children also learn about why we need to eat healthy options.
The children will be able to take recipes home to try with their families.
Breakfast optionsChildren who have had no breakfast at home
will be able to come to the school office, where they can be provided with some healthy breakfast options.
This service is only for children who do not eat breakfast at home, as a last resort to keep them going through out the day.
The children will be taught about the importance of eating breakfast, and a notice sent home to their parents requesting that they are given breakfast prior to coming to school.
30 minutes activity per dayAccording to the SPARC Physical Activity
guidelines for children and young people (5-18 years), they should:
“throughout each day, do 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity”.
http://www.sparc.org.nz/getting-active/activity-guidelines
To help the children achieve this, we will allow 30 minutes of every school day to some form of fun physical activity: dancing, playing games, aerobics etc.
After-school sportsThe children will be actively encouraged to
join an after school sports team. Many options of different sports will be
offered, with supportive and encouraging coaches from within the school community.
Inter-class and inter-school competitions will be organised to get the children more active by playing these sports.
