Editor’s Note Dear Reader,

Happy May Day, Lei Day, Boy’s Day and Mother’s Day!! The days are just flying. Seems like there isn’t enough hours in a day to do everything that I wish to do. Summer is getting near. There will be many things happening soon. Please join us again this year for our 3rd Summer Ohana Camp at Camp HR Erdman, in Mokuleia. That event will be held from Sat-Sun, June 22-23. The deadline for registration is Sunday, May 26th. See front page for details. Registration forms are available at the church. Stop by today.

May 12th is Mother’s Day. Mothers have very heavy responsibilities. From the time when the child is still in the womb, the mother shapes the heart of the child. If the mother is raising the child in a safe and loving environment, the child will feel secure. Our moms are exactly like the earth. Children would be in distress if their mom was in constant stress, and unhappiness. It would be the same as having constant earthquakes. A father’s scolding can hurt, but a mother’s insecurity is most painful to a child. A father’s scolding is like a thunderstorm; a mother’s insecurity is like an earthquake. A well grounded mother is like being in a safe haven, even if there is a storm outside. I heard a saying, “If the wife is happy, life is happy.” Whether your mother is physically present or has passed on, your mother will always be your mother. And her love for you will never end. Happy Mother’s Day!

I wanted to share with you the three treasures of the world, based on the Konko faith tradition. I didn’t even know this, until my mom mentioned about it. In various faith traditions, there are three treasures. In Buddhism, the three treasures or jewels of the world

are: 仏法僧 (Buppousou) Bu=Buddha, Pou=Dharma and Sou=the Sangha. The three jewels in Taoism are: compassion, frugality and humility. The three gems of Jainism are: the right vision or view (Samyak Darshana), right knowledge (Samyak Gyana) and right conduct (Samyak Charitra) — constitutes the path to liberation. In long-established Chinese traditions, the "Three Treasures" are the essential energies sustaining human life:

Jing 精 "nutritive essence, essence; refined, perfected; extract; spirit, demon; sperm, seed"

Qi 氣 "vitality, energy, force; air, vapor; breath; spirit, vigor; attitude"

Shen 神 "spirit; soul, mind; god, deity; supernatural being"

From Japan ancient times, the three treasures were: 天地人(Tenchijin) Ten=Heaven, Chi=Earth, Jin=Man. Other treasures in the

Asian cultures are grains and beans 穀物. All mentioned treasures are profound and precious. Ok, now for the three treasures for

Konkokyo…(drum roll)… 日 天 四 、 月 天 四 、 金 乃 神Nittenshi=Sun, Gattenshi=Moon and Kane No Kami=Earth, or Earth Deity.

Life on Earth is possible because of the sun’s energy and light. Plants and animals would not be able to survive if the sun didn’t exist. Solar energy is important. It is used for green plants for photosynthesis. Without plants and trees, we wouldn’t have oxygen to breathe. Carbon dioxide, which we produce when we exhale, is air for the plants to make into Oxygen. This process takes place

thanks to the sun. Wind is possible because of the sun, too. It heats up air unevenly throughout the earth. The warm air rises since it is lighter, and cool air comes down, because it is heavier—producing wind. People who do not get exposed to

the sun enough get a condition called rickets. They have difficulty walking, and legs are bowed. The sun is important for Vitamin D synthesis, for us to get strong bones.

The moon is important because it regulates the tide, and stabilizes Earth’s rotation. It also acts like a night light. The moon also contributes to the weather. The Founder, Konko Daijin said, “Heaven and Earth are like a

couple. They cannot be a couple if one is without the other. Heaven is the Husband, and Earth is the wife. Though they are a couple, when Nittenshi-Sama gives sunshine, Gattenshi-Sama does not interfere. Also, when Gattenshi-Sama gives rain, it’s like a mother giving milk, and Nittenshi-Sama does not interfere. He does not meddle in his wife’s maternal activities. Similarly, when the husband is managing domestic affairs, his wife should not complain. At the same time, the husband should

be considerate of his wife and not complain about her duties. This will make the family harmonious.” (GII, Fujiwara Zenpei 4)

The Earth is very important to us because we live on it. We have been fully sustained with plants, animals, food, air, water, minerals and metals for humankind to be able to live now—it’s produced here on Earth; not imported from another planet in another galaxy. We refer to Konjin as the Great Spirit that sustains all life on Earth.

Notice that all three of these treasures co-exist in mutual interdependence. We call this Aiyo Kakeyo. The existence of the Earth would be meaningless, if it were not for the Sun and Moon. We living creatures can’t survive without one or the other. Even if we have air to breathe, if we do not have the normal bodily ability to breathe the air, it would be meaningless.

Everything is interdependent in this Universe: Kami and people, Parent and child, Teacher and student, Book and its

reader, Boss and its employees, The store and its customers, Food and its eaters, Drinks and its drinkers, Cars and its drivers, Houses and its inhabitants, A pet and its owner, Air and its breathers. We just can’t survive without the sustenance from the Sun, Moon and Earth. We all live in the midst of divine blessings. There is a greater power—that’s for sure. Everything is a part of a bigger whole. The whole world in

interconnected. We cannot make our own hearts beat. We cannot live long without eating food or drinking water. We eat things that had life to sustain our life. The lives of animals and plants have been terminated, so we humans can eat them. Every meal is a conglomeration of sacrificed lives. We simply must eat with the heart of appreciation and humbleness; instead of complain. Humans cannot even make a single apple or orange. It grew through the nutrients of the soil, the sunlight, rain and air. We simply couldn’t have made it this far in life without being supported every step of the way, by people’s care and love and the divine protection and sustenance of Kami. The Universe is Kami. It’s not a creation, but an existence.

The next time we get a chance out in the sun or moonlight, let’s give our thanks for making a normal day, normal. As we walk on the ground, we are literally walking on the body of a big mother that provides everything for us. Let us cherish these

three treasures of the world. Aloha, Edna Yano
