BE ALERT - Familiarize yourself with the directions to our new meeting site; from our last site you only need to go a few thousand feet east along Wolf Hill Road. An austerity budget forced us to relocate. SAVE $ $ $ - Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS is on Voice Rd. - west side of Glen Cove Road - between Old Country Rd. and Jericho Turnpike) will offer a 20% sale night for all members on Thursday, October 28. Take advantage,,everything will be on sale. CATSKILL CLIMBER - If you'r hiking more frequently in the Catskills, send a SASE to me at 17 Willow Road, New Hyde Park, NY 11040. I'll send you a copy of the Catskill 3500 Club Tally and Information Sheet. It is necessary to record dates of mountains climbed if you're interested in Catskill 3500 membership. Come to a meeting and speak to the ADK-LIers who are also 3500 members. APPRECIATION & APPLAUSE - are offered to the outgoing officers and volunteers who have worked so hard in the last years. The vitality of our organization is dependent upon new volunteers. New blood is an important shot in the arm for all clubs. BUILDING ENDURANCE - If you are willing to challenge yourself, participate as often as you can. You can build your endurance by walking at home as well as joining progressively more demanding hikes. Once you can enjoy a sense of. well being after exerting yourself, perhaps you'll be encouraged to go to the next level. Each level of hiking ability has its own rewards. Those rewards can be enough to

overcome the sore muscles all novices endure and even more. Two years ago I lost months due to a broken ankle; this past winter I was hindered by a bum knee and low blood sugar that required more food than I could consume. Rehab for the knee, a brace for the knee, and a new insulin regimen has eliminated these problems. Don ' t let glitches along the way deter you from the goal of getting out to enjoy nature and relax as you challenge your muscles! RECYCLING - Donate your used but not abused walking shoes to SPORTLACES SHOES FOR THE NEEDY program. Mail them to Perceptive Products, 2438 30th Street, Boulder CO 80301. For more info call 800 688-2656.

On June 19th, our chapter hosted the meeting for the Downstate Roundtable. There were representatives from the following chapters: Knickerbocker, New York, New Jersey and Mohican. Long Island was represented by Linda Edwards, June Fait, Herb Coles and Larry Braun.

The speaker for the meeting was Jack Gebharts from the Sterling Forest Reserve Project. He provided much information on why Sterling Forest should be saved from development. This area provides watershed for the NY -NJ area as well as providing a green area close to the urban area. The 2,000 acres in New Jersey were saved by eminent domain. That would not be feasible in NY. The Local, State and Federal agencies involved in this are so confusing, it's hard to tell who's got jurisdiction over what.

Jack Freeman, assistant to ADK legal Counsel Neil Woodworth, advised that dating back to 1988 ADK has supported the efforts of the downstate chapters (Including LI) to preserve and protect Sterling Forest. To help coordinate the efforts of Main Club and the downstate chapters, our own Larry Braun was appointed "Facilitator". Anyone willing to help out give Larry a call.

Herb Coles spoke about the Adopt-A-Trail program. What is needed are people (Individuals or groups) willing to inspect and work on the trails at least 3 times between spring and fall. Please contact Herb if your interested.

The next Downstate Roundtable will be held on October 23 and will be hosted by the New York Chapter

at Camp Nawakwa at 9 AM. The emphasis will be on membership. Chapter chairs, governors, membership chairs and conservation chairs are invited but anyone with an interest can attend. Just let Linda Edwards know.

Many thanks to Linda Edwards and June for getting the refreshments together and to Herb & Paul Lanzillotta for setting and cleaning up. Also thanks to Herb and June for providing the social room of their condo complex in Long Beach for the meeting. It was nice and cool by the water on a very hot Saturday morning and afternoon.

OPEN LETTER I would like the "world" to know, through the medium of

the LONG ISLAND MOUNTAINEER, what a wonderful, generous buncha gals "n"guys the Long Island Chapter is.

I have just returned from a two week stay with several Long Island Mountaineers during which I was, forgive the term, royally entertained: we covered most of Long Island, a lot of Manhattan, some of each of the other 4 boroughs, Putnam and Westchester Counties and enjoyed bagels in Yonkers.

It could not have been more enjoyable even though one host did put me to work hauling lumber, shopping and

helping refurnish his home! (Jack Gebel's) Thank You, everyone. See you at ADK Loj over the

Columbus Day weekend. PETER IBBETSON

Not long ago, at the annual meeting of the ADK that was hosted by our chapter in Riverhead, an upstate

member asked me if there was any group that was attempting to clean up the sound.

I was embarrassed because I couldn't give a definitive answer, even though over the past few years I've heard and seen many horror stories of the Sound's water purity. Fishermen talk of the western end of the Sound as being biologically dead, and the amount of floating garbage and wastes have increased dramatically over the past 10 years. I Don ' t remember the turbidity or the large amounts of debris from my childhood in St. James.

This year the Center for Marine Conservation is coordinating a New York and Connecticut coast cleanup on September 18 and 19. The CMC has the support of the NYS DEC and the American Littoral Society. The Long Island Sound Watershed Alliance is facilitating the clean up on both shores, and has widespread support on many community, city and county levels. Since I asked (sometimes a wrong move!) they assigned the Wading River Section to me. Apparently the debris removed will be catalogued (source eventually identified) and the information sent to the national office in Washington. Sunday, September 19, 1993 will be the day. If you are interested in helping or just taking a stroll on the beach (possible dip?) please contact Ernie Kriese at 821-7716. The work should not be strenuous, and we definitely have a vested interest in the health and quality of the sound waters.

Persistence does pay off. After an all night legislative session an ENVIRONMENTAL TRUST FUND was approved at 6 AM!!! Our own Neil Woodward was active in lobbying for this Trust Fund and was there all night with the Legislators. We will now be able to purchase the Whitney Estate and Follensby Pond and there will be money available for Pine Barrens purchases also.

Thanks to all of you who wrote letters, made visits and phone calls and signed petitions. I do feel that we helped in this effort and now we have a bill of which we can be proud of.

The editor has an urgent request! "VOLUNTEERS", "VOLUNTEERS", Openings exist in the circulation Dept. and the Looking Back Column. Delia Costello is moving on to greener pastures and we thank her for her contributions. If you can type with a computer or just a Royal portable you could fill this slot now. Just call me or the President to volunteer. The circulation department has an opening for someone to fold and stamp 350 copies of the Mountaineer. It's a real fun job for a couple with a few kids to pitch in. Contact the Editor soon, before these choice positions get filled by someone else, and see your name listed on page 2 with all the other important big wigs.

The Editor welcomes a new advertiser to the Mountaineer. "THE MAP MAN" is a unique store filled with all sorts of irresistible goodies like map puzzles and hiking maps of every description. You won't be able to leave without buying some sort thing to hang on your walls or give as a gift to some fellow hiker.

Your editor currently has to contend with a cranky computer. Seems the hard drive goes limp and it takes 1 hour to recover and continue. If you have an old 286 or just plain old XT lying around the house please call me and it will be picked up free of charge.

About this club. Why join? You can hike all the mountains upstate without this club. However if you join you will enjoy the friendship and camaraderie of fellow club members and they will guide you to the quickest ways to achieve your goals of climbing all the great summits in the Catskills, Adirondacks and other parks in the surrounding areas. We also care for the environment since we hike in the woods why not pitch in to keep the trails clean and safe. So do your part so all can enjoy the wilderness for generations to come. Happy Trails.

LARRY BRAUN TO LEAD

Jan '94 CARIBBEAN TRIP

Spend two gloriously sunny weeks on St John, in the U.S Virgin Islands, where 75°-80° temperature and unrelieved sunny days let you escape the grip of winter in New York. Get into "island time" — that luxurious state of mind where time becomes unimportant. Go native with Larry, Long Island Chapter's very own prolific trip leader who is very familiar with St John.

Larry will take you to the best snorkeling and hiking on St. John. He'll have an island jitney (a colorful, canvass-top pickup) to transport the group around this 20 square mile island — two-thirds of which is a U.S. National Park.

You're also free to connect with nearby National Park Service interpretive walks and talks, or the regularly scheduled, privately-operated tours of the island, trips to points of interest, night snorkeling, and other adventures that start right from Maho Bay.

Shoppers will be delighted with the duty-free offerings in St John's Cruz Bay shops, and, just a ferry ride away, St Thomas' Charlotte Amalie is said to be "without question the shopping center of the Caribbean".

You'll stay at fabulous Maho Bay Campground situated on a hillside rising above a beautiful north shore beach and bay. The entire complex is interconnected by wooden walkways and stairs. This is luxury "camping" in a fully-equipped electrified double-occupancy cloth and screen cottage that can be made suitable for a family of three or four. Each cabin features an eat-in-kitchen and a deck open to the stars where you can enjoy rum drinks with your friends.

Dining at Maho Bay is in a lovely large open-air pavilion overlooking beautiful Francis Bay and features a different menu each night of the week. In addition, there are some good restaurants on St John and Larry knows where to find local native food and night life — energetic dancing to lively local music .

Approximate cost of trip (including air fare from New York City) will be $1500. For further information send a large stamped, self-addressed envelop to: Larry Braun, 48-05 42n<* Street, Sunnyside, NY 11104-3148

MORE LOCKING BACK: JUNE 5 - JAPANESE STROLL GARDEN AND BAILEY ARBORETUM - Because of budget cuts, the Japanese Stroll Garden was closed, but Nancy Hodson (1), Allen Grunthal and Marhy Grunthal had a pleasant short walk at the Aboretum where the largest specimen trees are located, and around nearby Shu Swamp Herb Coles (1), June Fait, Carol Mantell, Robin Geller, Larry Braun, Martha McDermott, Rich Ehli, Carrie Ehli, Sheldon Gottlieb, Harry Sokol, Yetta Sokol, Bob Sokol. Rich Fram spent the holiday week-end working and hiking. It was the first two 46'er peaks for Carrie Ehli and Carol Mantel. JUNE 19 - NEW PALTZ/CATSKILLS BIKE RIDE - Don Mantell, Ron Martin, Jack Gebel, Rich More (1) biked 54 miles on a hot and hazy day. The easy riding early on through the Wallkill Valley eventually gave way to hills and then mountains as the group climbed up to the Ashokan Reservoir and then to the top of the Shawngunks, where they were rewarded with a 3-mile screaming downhill coast back to New Paltz where they wolfed down some well-earned Chinese food. JUNE 27 - HARRIMAN STATE PARK - Jack Lambros (1), JoAnn Malecki and Jack Gebel covered 7 miles mostly on the Long Path which was marked very well. The group stopped for lunch at Big Hill Shelte, climbed up a fire tower and topped off the hike with a swim in Lake Skanmmiti. Along the way were deer, copperhead snakes and salamanders. JUNE 5 - ASHOKAN HIGH POINT - Rich Ehli (L) and Les Wahrenberg hiked to Ashokan High Point from Peekamoose Road. Both must have mightly displeased the weather gods as it only began to rain after travelling 150 miles to the trailhead and stopped as they returned to the car. Met a rain Yetti on the summit who was selling $5 umbrellas. The Yetti asked Rick and Les to give his regards to Desirata Fahquartt. JUNE 5 - KAATERSKILL FALLS AND CLIFF WALK -Carol Mantell, Pauline Lavery (co-i's) and Carol Mcllugh

covered 8-1/2 miles on a rainy day. The group walked up the waterfal path to the Escarpment Trail to the site of the Catskill mountain house. The group hiked back through North Lake Campground as rain made waterfall trails dangerous. New entrance to Escarpment tails is at Shutt Road. JUNE 19 - CATSKILLS, WHITTENBERG & CORNELL MTS. - Ron Engasser (1), Rich Ehli and friend Cody who insisted on hiking on all fours coverd 10 miles on almost perfect day. Cody flushed out two wild turkeys and needed some assistance scaling cliff faces but otherwise was a great trailmate. Fine views from both peaks and search for water for pooch and found some on downside of Wittenberg. JUNE 20 - PECONIC CANOE TRIP - The skies cleared for L. I. ADK's finest to slowly paddle down the picturesque Peconic River covering about 8 miles from the headwaters to Riverhead. Wildlife spotted included various sightings of birds, large snapping turtles, Jack Gebel and ducks. A dip in the local swimming hole cooled the paddlers off just prior to lunch. Participants were Lisa Van Dyne, Marcia Van Dyne, Lauren Cabot and Fenna Kopelman, Tom Cushing and Dad, Paul Lanzillotta, Kathy Ayers, Joanne Malecki, Linda Rousseau, Judi Belchick, Bob Flynn, Shane Flynn and Ernie Kriese (1). JULY 10 - LAKE AWOSTING - Ken King (1), Robert Siegel and Marvin Schlesinger had an easy hike on a sunny and very hot day along carriage roads to Lake Awosting. Water conditions were ideal, the temperature just right and the water was crystal clear. A family of wild ducks has taken up residence at the lake.

JULY 17 - KAATERSKILL FALLS AND NORTH LAKE HIKE/SWIM - Rich Fram, Phil McCarly, Linda Seeback, Susan Karas, Ronald Tow, Josh Kevevsky, Andrea Beecher, Robert Siegel and Ed Hahnefeld (1) covered 10 miles in the North Lake area of the Catskills. The group came across Sunset Rock, Inspiration Point, Boulder Rock, Catskill Mountain House site, and Artists Rock. There was a forest fire reported at Boulder Rock shortly after the group had lunch there and could see the smoke from Sunset Rock JULY 18 - NORTH FORK BICYCLE CIRCULAR - Paul Lanzillotta led a group of six over 40 miles on bicycle covering the North Fork of Long Island. Joan and Jack Weisenbloom, Godlind Johnson, Bud Kazdan, Len Apicella and Allan Grunthal enjoyed beautiful weather while viewing many farmstands with fresh produce and flowers. Many mint classic autos passed the group. After a break at Mattituck Beach, the group continued to Horton Point Lighthouse and Park for lunch; they took long stairs down the bluff to the beach below. Everyone had a fun time and good workout, they JULY 24 - WYANOKIE CIRCULAR, NJ - Allen Grunthal (1), Rob Siegel and friend Josh hiked about 9 miles in northern New Jersey on a sunny, warm and dry summer day. Numerous ledges along the way offered views of the surrounding hills, Wanaque Reservoir and Manhattan skyline. Trail relocation and distroted compass readings due to substantial iron in the ground tested the group's route finding skills. Exploration of an old mine capped off a fine day. JUNE 12 - BREAKNECK RIDGE -of the Hudson, down to the World

top of Breakneck Ridge and Mt. Taurus were the highlights of his hike, along with the rock scramble ascending to the ridge. Added bonuses include a view of helicopter rescue squads practicing in the Hudson. The trip was made interesting by meeting an 81-year-old solo hiker, Victor, from the Ramapo ADK, as we traveled through a poorly blazed turn where an old trail met a new one and caused a short detour that was easily recovered.
