Day Away from Work Drivers Ed / Autocrossby Skip Carterphotos by Jimmie Mitchell and Skip Carter

Our October 8 Day Away event at the Streets of Willowhas been a twice-a-year staple for the Grand Prix region. Originally concocted by Michael Dolphin and a group of GPX drivers about 15 years ago, this 2-part event (continuous lap Drivers Ed & a single-lap Autocross session) has been a regu-lar part of our region's calendar.

Streets is a great spot for this event. We have a high num-ber of novices turn up, and it is a great learning track. It is also technical enough to be fun and interesting for advanced drivers, so we are able to appeal to a wide range of partici-pants. Members often bring their newly licensed teenage drivers (18 years) and spouses who are usually more inter-ested in becoming better, safer and more comfortable driv-ers — NOT necessarily interested in just driving fast.

This event was no exception. We had a great group of driv-ers and volunteers, and the weather gods were with us. Spe-cial thanks to our volunteers, including the instructors who dedicate a big portion of their day to our novices.

Dave Hockett, Glenn Orton, Dan Hockett, Alfred Abken, Jim-mie Mitchell, Suesan Way, Brita Goldsmith, Marty Friedman, Steve Glas, Darren & Jennifer Cole and other volunteers were outstanding. Thanks also to Bob & Karen Lewis and the GPX flag team for another superb job.

Circle Porsche in Long Beach again sponsored this event. We were happy to welcome David Nidess from the Circle sales department. Please take the opportunity to thank Circle for their continued support. Without them, your entry fees would be, well... Significantly higher.

We're working on the driving events calendar for 2013. It looks like it will be another fun and exciting year.

Write of Way, by Suesan Way

Canadian Geese

On Saturday evening, December 1st, we celebrated the year end finale of the Grand Prix Region with our annual Holiday Party

– it was a wonderful evening at the Long Beach Yacht Club with lots of members, friends, VIPs AND a fabulous MC with an exciting live auction that including someone jump-ing on a table – but all of that is for the January Circuit.

In this, the final edition of this year’s Circuit, I thought it appropriate to recap some of what we did as a club over the year. If you didn’t join us for anything this year, we hope that you find something tempting to do with us and your Porsche in 2013.

GPX celebrated our 31st year as a region in 2012 and, as of November 30th, we had 602 members. This includes primary, associate and affiliate members. We produced 12 issues (OK, Skip produced 12) of our award winning maga-zine, The Circuit. We were very proud that our publication came 2nd in class at the National Newsletter Contest held at last year's Porsche Parade in Salt Lake City.

We had 12 Breakfast Club and 10 Board meetings. On aver-age, 75-85 people attended each breakfast — we offered free door prize tickets and free coffee for everyone and a buffet breakfast is always available. The Board meeting followed, also at Friscos. Everyone from Breakfast is invited to stay for the Board meeting.

In 2012, GPX partnered with San Gabriel Valley region for three entry level Drivers Education (DE) and Zone 8 Time Trials events at the Fairplex track in Pomona. We also produced a PCA DE Instructor Training and Instructor only open track day. GPX also did two Day Away from Work DE and Zone 8 Autocrosses at Streets of Willow in the Lancaster area. We ran a Friday Test and Tune/DE at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in conjunction with San Diego region's PCA Club Race that weekend.

In March we received a subsidy from PCA and had a fun day with a Membership and Hospitality Tent at the well attended All Porsche Swap Meet held at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim during the LA Lit Meet weekend in March.

We went to the Nethercutt Museum twice and once got into the "special permission needed" basement restoration area. We had a great visit to the Petersen Museum. There was an

overnight run to Borrego Springs and a couple of day runs through the Santa Monica Mountains and Angeles Crest.

We had an excellent tech session on the new model 911 (the 991) at the gorgeous garages of Walter’s Porsche in Riverside with GPX member and a Porsche Field Technical Manager Rick Perkins.

GPX spearheaded and helped organize a very well attended Open House and BBQ at Dunkel Brothers, a wonderful day of Porsches and Woodies as well as acres of memorabilia – with all donations going to Boy Republic in Chino Hills.Boy’s Republic is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian school and treatment community for troubled youngsters that since its founding in 1907, has guided more than 28,000 at-risk teenage boys and girls (including Steve McQueen — hence the Porsche connection) toward productive, fulfilling lives.

We had a lovely and elegant Concours d’ Elegance on the lawn of the Lakewood Country Club with judged and dis-play entries. The 912 Registry and their beautiful cars were great addition to the day and we were proud to have the 912 as the 2012 marque.

Grand Prix strongly supported the California Festival of Speed at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. GPX will be very involved in this event again in 2013, so stay tuned!

As you can see, Grand Prix was involved in a lot over the past year, and that is just what we did as a region. Every PCA member can attend any events offered by other PCA regions. Take a look at the 2-page calendar on page 10 to get an idea of what's in store for you next year. AND, you can go further afield and see what is happening throughout North America. You may not know it, but PCA is the biggest single marque car club in the world with 107,000 PRIMARY members. Anywhere you head in the US and Canada, you are likely to be able to find a Porsche Club event going on.

Thanks to the 2012 Board of Directors and all of Commit-tee Chairs and members for all of your hard work for the club and the members.

Season’s Greetings to everyone and a Best Wishes from GPX for a Happy and Healthy New Year.

December 2012

Long Beach Rally

Here we are at the end of another great year in the Grand Prix Region. When I look back at the events we've run in 2012, we did great in some areas, pretty good in others, and a little remiss in others.

Our Performance Driving program is robust and well. We have an ever increasing management team that does an outstanding job. Part of the evidence of that is our own Dave Hockett being elevated to the Zone 8 Time Trial Chair posi-tion. The 2013 calendar has a great offering.

Our Tour program did pretty well, but we neglected to schedule much the second half of the year. That WILL NOT be true for 2013. We had a couple of Tech Sessions that were extremely well done. You can look for more in 2013. As far as social events (well, every event is a social event in GPX)... But our party type social events were a little light (we did have a fantastic Holiday Party — we believe the largest ever held in GPX). Our president, Miss Suesan, is planning to add at least two more, maybe a beach BBQ and a mid-year dinner at Friscos.

If ANY of you have thoughts about places we can go, things we can do, contact Suesan. Chuck Weaver put together a great Long Beach Fun Rally/Tour last month. You can see some of the photos in this Circuit. People had a great time. I had no idea how much there is to see and do in Long Beach. Expect to see a couple of these next year, maybe something to the Palos Verdes Peninsula as well as one in Long Beach.

In the January Circuit we'll cover several recently completed events, including the Holiday Party (which has the most successful Silent Auction ever) and Tech Tactics. Last year Porsche sent over the Project Engineer for the 918 project. This year they sent the Project Engineer for the new Cay-man R, which provided an incredible opportunity to get insight into the heart of Porsche R&D at Weissach. The other very special guest speaker was Jeff Zwart. Jeff 's repu-tation precedes him, but in case you don't know, Jeff is a critically acclaimed racing and automotive photographer, a venerable commercial film director, and a multiple winner and record holder of the fearsome Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. He is one of a scant few civilians with clearance to fly photography missions for the U.S. Marines and Navy.

He has ridden shotgun on an F-18 Hornet while popping off glamour shots of the most aggressive military hardware in history. Mention his name amid the automotive, racing, photography, advertising or design world’s elite and some of these industries’ heaviest hitters go slack-jawed with awe.

After 28 years on the East coast, a big THANK YOU to Porsche Cars North America and Porsche Club of America for getting Tech Tactics on the West coast. It was an amaz-ing day of opportunity to get first hand Porsche "inside the inner circle" information, and to be able to ask questions.

Our first Breakfast Club meeting of the year will be on Janu-ary 5th, as usual, at Frisco's Cruise-in Diner on Los Coyotes Diagonal in Long Beach. Thanks to Pacific Porsche, we will have quite a few of the 2013 Porsche Calendar to hand out as door prizes. I believe that these beautiful calendars sell for about $60.00. Even if you just stop by for a free cup of cof-fee, you'll get a raffle ticket.

See you there!!!

Buttonwillow Test 'n Tune Dayby Skip Carterphotos by Greg Phillips and Skip Carter

On Friday November 3, the Grand Prix Region hosted a Test 'n Tune day at Buttonwillow Raceway. You might ask why we would do a 1-day event at a BIG racetrack. The answer is part of a bigger happening, the expansion of Porsche Club of America Club Racing in the Southwest.

The San Diego region does a November 2-day Time Trial each year at Buttonwillow. This year they expanded it to include a PCA Club Race (which includes practice sessions, an Enduro and Sprint races). PCA Club Racing is the epitome of performance driving in our club and the only event that allows unlimited passing (although there are significant controls in place to help insure that cars go home the same way they came).

Club races are typically 3-day affairs, so GPX volunteered to take on the Friday part... And there you are!

Circle Porsche in Long Beach sponsored the event, for which we are extremely thankful. YOU can help your club by making sure that Circle knows how much you appreciate their support.

It was a wonderful day. There was a good turnout of drivers, includ-ing several novices who had never been to a performance driving event. It is a credit to the high caliber of instructors we have amongst us that these drivers all left with big smiles on their faces. The rest of the weekend went extremely well for SDR. Most of our Friday driv-ers stayed for the entire weekend. We're looking forward to doing this again in 2013. As always, if you have any questions about our Performance Driving program, whether you are a fan of spirited driving OR YOU JUST want to be more comfortable and confident driving your Porsche (or any other car) on the street, give me a call. We've got just the thing for you.

November Breakfast Club Meeting by Skip carterphotos by Jimmie Mitchell

Even though many of our drivers were up at the PCA Buttonwillow Drivers Ed event, attendance at our November Breakfast Club Meeting was great... And there was no shortage of door prizes (as usual). Jimmie Mitchell was able to photograph most of the winners.

Frisco Car Hop Diner has been a great location for our monthly meetings.Plenty of parking, good food, better people and some pretty amazing carsgrace our doorstep. We've consistently had 75-100 people show up.

Starting in January we're going to add something new. Dave Hockett is looking for Porsche stories from you guys. Each month we want to hearone: What turned you on to Porsche? Do you have a unique story about your first Porsche? Do you have an interesting Porsche incident, mechanicstory, stuck in the desert story... You get the idea? I'd bet more than not, you've got an interesting story we'd like to hear, so at each breakfast we're looking for you to spend 5 to 10 minutes speaking to the group about it. Ifyou have any interest in this or questions, give Dave a call (909) 518-0415.

Thanks to Bob Baddy, Gail Sachs, John Baskett, Rey Garnica and anyoneelse who stepped in while Suesan and Skip and Dave and others wereaway. Thanks to Jimmie Mitchell, we've got plenty of good photos.

See you next month!!!

Steve McQueen THE LAST MILE... revisitedby Barbara McQueen, published by Dalton Watson Fine Books

Bruce Herrington

This biography of Steve McQueen is a unique book. Not only does it offer an unique perspective on his activities, the presentation is like a photo album with annotations. Even the 9x12 horizontal format of the pages reflects the photo album feel. Though it covers only the last three years of Steve’s life (with photos taken by his third wife Barbara Minty McQueen), it shows an at-home McQueen, a retired McQueen, a differ-ent guy than that depicted in books about McQueen the Motor-Head, or about McQueen the Actor. Cof-fee table size/format (and mostly pictures) it appears to be a book to browse, more than to read. Yes it is a picture book, but once you start read-ing the captions, you get hooked on the story of Steve the ‘regular guy’. Those familiar with the Friends of Steve McQueen Car Show will be interested in the description of Steve’s involvements with The Boys Republic of Chino Hills.

The beginning of the book shows more of Barbara’s life than Steves, but then the album evolves to show a Steve McQueen that is surprisingly home-spun and retiring, at least com-pared to his behavior on the screen or on the track. Once one gets into the book, it presents a very captivating, unique-ly personal insight into an ordinary guy whose off-screen persona was less like his on-screen characters that is the case with most actors. The intimate and vivid first-person descriptions of everyday activities make Steve seem so real it is shocking to remember that he died over 30 years ago. His last years are revisited by the author’s modern recollections of the events described (and in which she participated), trig-gered by her never before published pictures and tape record-ings made at the time.

A casual, romantic (in the open-road sense, not Romeo and Juliet), Steve McQueen is presented as a guy who has a brand

new Rolls-Royce convertible but prefers to drive a 20 year old Chevy pick-up; a guy with a gift of gab such that he could stop at a closed motel, establish enough rapport with the owners to spend a week, sharing meals and fishing trips, without the

owners ever catching on that he was anything but a dirty old man with a nice-looking young girl.

Unlike most photo albums, the pages of Steve McQueen THE LAST MILE... revisited include enough text to present fascinating stories. The layout differs from page to page from a copy of a 35mm proof sheet to a full bleed page picture. Each couple of pages presents a different (and very captivating) bite-sized adventure. Dis-tinct from most books and appropriate to a photo album, it has no index.

The book consists of seven chapters plus a foreword by buddy/mentor Pat Johnson, and an intro-duction by author Barbara McQueen. The chapters relate to eras based on places they lived or movies in which he acted. Within chapters the sections are sort of an illustrated stream-of-consciousness portrayal of days-in-the-life of Steve (and Barbara) McQueen.

Steve’s final days of suffering from Mesothelioma are covered but not dwelled on, and a one page post-script by a repre-sentative of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization advocates for prevention and a cure for this very selective affliction, and presents a modern picture of the author as she is some 30 odd years after the episodes portrayed. No com-ments are made as to how or when Steve McQueen may have inhaled his fatal dose of asbestos fibers.

Steve McQueen THE LAST MILE... revisited consists of 254, 9x12 pages, and is available for $49.00 from your favor-ite book seller, or from http://www.mortorbooks.com.

After our October 6 Breakfast meeting at Friscos, about 20 of us departed for a Fun Rally tour of Long Beach. In case you weren't aware of it, Long Beach has many, many interesting places to see, and we just hit some of the main ones. An energetic group pulled into our 1st stop, Rancho Los Alamitos. We had complimentary parking behind the gates (where pictures were better). We were given a private tour of the grounds and only a small slice of the large estate (so we need to come back for more). This 7.5 acre parcel is a rare restige of the original 300,000 acre Los Coyotes land concessions given to Manuel Nieto in 1790. In the 1960s the last private owners of the property, the Bixbys, donated the property to the City of Long Beach.

Back to our cars for more adventures of hidden treasures of Long Beach golf courses, tennis courts, lawn bowling, a 2-story fountain, small ponds, piers, Olympic event locations, bridges and underpasses.

We finished up at a portion of our namesake Grand Prix track for lunch and awards. We had gifts for all finishers and a good time was had by all.

The route instructions included a dozen questions, the answers to which were to be found along the way. The top three were Todd McElhaney, Jay Barton and Arturo Chaparro. Good job!!!

As you know, the Children's Dental Health Clinic is one of the two Grand Prix Region designated charities (the other being ASUDEC - Africas Sustainable Development Council). On Friday, October 19th, GPX was invited to attend Children's 80th Anniversary Gala, which was held at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach.

We left quite honored for the invitation. I attended with other GPX members, Chuck & Alicia Weaver. Chuck happens to be the grandson of the clinic's founder, Dr. Robert Anderson.

For those of you who don't know, CDHC was founded in 1932 during the Great Depression by Dr. Robert Anderson, a Long Beach dentist. He got a trailer, converted it to a mobile clinic and began going from school to school providing services to underserved children.

The service grew with the help of organiza-tions like the Junior League and Harbor Dental Society, relocating several times be-fore arriving at its current location in Miller Children's Hospital. It currently serves over 10,000 patients annualy with 33,000 visits. CHDC has been able to open outreach clinics on Catalina Island and in Bellflower and Downey and continues the mobile clinic with a 32 foot state of the art facility.

Back to the gala evening, it was a very to be in a room with so many supporters of CDHC. The evening also had an auction that was full of very nice items. It appeared to do very well and I'm sure the clinic will do good things with the money raised.

We walked away from the evening feeling very much ap-preciated for the support we have been able to give to this great community organization. We look forward to many years of working together.

ATLANTA -- June 30, 2011 -- Porsche returns to Le Mans with a works-run LMP1 sports prototype. The first outing of the completely new developed race car is planned for the year 2014. With 16 over-all victories, Porsche is the most successful manu-facturer in Le Mans. The most recent win was in 1998 with the Porsche 911 GT1.

“Motorsport was always an essential part of the Porsche brand,” emphasises Matthias Müller, Presi-dent of the Executive Board at Porsche AG. “So for us it was only a matter of time before we returned as a factory to the top league of racing. Porsche’s successes in Le Mans are unrivalled. We want to follow up on this with the 17th outright victory.”

With the RS Spyder sports prototype that was run with great success from 2006 to 2008 by the factory-backed Penske Racing team in the USA and to 2010 by several customer teams worldwide, Porsche has set the benchmark recently in the LMP2 category. “With the RS Spyder we proved that our motorsport engineers in Weissach are at the forefront,” says Wolfgang Hatz, Board Member for Research and Development at Porsche AG. “For in-stance, we were the first to run a high-revving race engine with direct fuel injection, DFI, setting new standards in performance and ef-ficiency. Recently, with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, we adopted a complete-ly new drive technology for racing purposes and achieved a considerable reduction in consumption.”

Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport, is already prepared for one of the most challenging development programmes in the company’s history. “We’re looking forward to the task of developing new technologies and to continue on with the success of the Porsche RS Spyder. After the conclusion of our works-supported sports proto-

type programme in the American Le Mans Series we have kept up with the latest technological advances. Now we will begin with detailed research in order to evaluate the various concept alternatives for our new car. These obviously depend

on how the regulations for the year 2014 look in detail. In principle, these regulations are in-teresting for us because the integration of our hybrid technology in the vehicle concept is one possible option.”

Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood claimed the first overall victory for Porsche in 1970 with the legendary 917 short-tail. The 16th and by now last overall win was secured by Lau-rent Aiello, Stéphane

Ortelli and Allan McNish in 1998 with the 911 GT1. In the years 2008 and 2009, the Porsche RS Spyder sports proto-type won the title in the LMP2 category.

Ed: This news is over a year old, but I came across it and, again, it brought a smile to my face — can't wait!
