Why is it important to the story?

• The theme has been explored throughout the novel and has a lot of importance and emotion.

• Many characters suffered from loneliness and isolation, such as Crooks and Curley’s wife.

• Provides the reader with powerful and sad emotions, and it helps the reader feel for the characters.

What does this theme mean?

• Loneliness and Isolation involves someone secluding themselves from the rest of the world, and not having a true relationship with another person, instead opting to keep to themselves.

• Many of the ranchmen go through this problem, therefore they do not usually share a bond with someone else.

What character does this relate to?

• Crooks;- Never allowed to fit in and participate in

activities with the other ranchmen.- Being black resulted in him having to live in a

separate bunk than everyone else.- Has lived life completely alone, with nobody

by his side.

• Curley’s Wife ;- Constantly sneaks into the men’s bunk to try

and converse with others.- No family by her side, as her relationship with

her mother fell apart after certain misunderstandings.

Where is loneliness and isolation evident in the novel?• Many people questioned George and Lenny’s

friendship at the beginning, as they have never gone through such a close friendship.

• Most of these ranchmen relocate and move constantly from ranch to ranch, never having time to truly create a bond with another individual.
