ELIGIBILITYThe age bands vary with each of the Services:Royal Naval Reserve: 16 - 43*Royal Marines Reserve: 16 - 32Army Reserve: 18 - 50*RAF Reserves: 18 - 54

There are situations where you may be able to join above the upper age limit. Contact your local unit for more information.

You should be a citizen of the United Kingdom, Commonwealth or Republic of Ireland and should normally have lived in the UK for at least five years immediately prior to your application.

If you decide to join the Reserve Forces, you indicate that you are prepared to take part in active service. If you are subsequently mobilised, your regular employment will be legally protected. Reserves and their employers have the right to seek exemption or deferral under certain circumstances.

Visit www.gov.uk/employee-reservist for more information.

INTRODUCTIONThe Reserve Forces are an essential part of the British Armed Forces, providing some 35,000 volunteers to the Reserves of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army and RAF. They play a fundamental role in fulfilling major commitments in each of the three Services.

The Reserve Forces provide people with the opportunity to do something different with their lives – to face new challenges,

gain and develop new skills, meet and work with new people, have fun and get paid for it.

As a Reservist you will get paid for the time you spend training and earn a tax-free bonus payment for completing a certain amount of training days each year. Pay scales are based on what a Regular with the same job and rank would get.

WHO WE ARE

GL RFCA IN NUMBERS:

The Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Greater London (GL RFCA) is the focal point of activity and administration for Reserves and Cadets in London for all three Services. We were formed in 1908 at the same time as the Army Reserve and are one of thirteen RFCAs spread across the UK, with boundaries that broadly match regional Army areas. RFCAs were established by statute and are not part of the military chain of command but are required to give advice and assistance to the Defence Council and the three Services on Reserve and Cadet matters.

The 62 full time staff of GL RFCA are Crown Servants headed up by ex-Regular officers. The 190 members of the Association are experienced professional people interested in defence and are drawn from the Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force and Cadets as well as London boroughs, universities and employers.

Uniquely, we also have a City Association which fosters strong links with the City of London Corporation, Livery Companies and other City institutions to the benefit of Reservists and Cadets alike.

• 4,500 Reservists

• 1,000 University Officer Cadets

• 194 Properties

• 32 Boroughs and the City of London

• 190 Members (including the City Association)

ROYAL ARMOURED CORPSHONOURABLE

ARTILLERY COMPANY

The Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) is the oldest regiment in the British Army having been formed by Royal Charter in 1537 by King Henry VIII. Today the HAC is a Surveillance and Target Acquisition (STA) regiment comprising of one STA Patrols squadron, 2 Light Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) squadrons, a PARA Light Gun Battery and a Headquarters squadron. The HAC, uniquely, also has a Corps of Drums and a state accredited regimental band. The HAC traditionally recruits from within the City of London and attracts fit, well-motivated and intelligent individuals who seek the challenge of the demanding role that the HAC offers.

The HAC has an important and high profile ceremonial role; it fires Gun Salutes at the Tower of London and provides Guards of Honour at Guildhall on royal and state occasions.

The DRT is made up of Watchkeepers and Liaison Officers who man the London Military Operations Centre (LMOC) in times of crises or during routine operations and exercises, and provide MACA resilience planning and advice to civilian partners, as required.

CIVIL SERVICE The Civil Service Challenge remains a high priority within government to attract and retain Reservists by offering a challenging and rewarding experience. The Civil Service is an employer that values the skills Reservists bring; signposts opportunities to join the Reserve Forces to its employees; and creates an environment for Reservists to be fully supported to train and deploy when necessary.

FIRST AID NURSING YEOMANRY (PRINCESS ROYAL’S VOLUNTEER CORPS)PO BOX 68218, LONDON SW1P 9UP (020 7976 5459) (WED)

The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (Princess Royal’s Volunteer Corps) is an all-female voluntary organisation which is on call 24/7 to deploy multi-faceted rapid response teams to support civil and military authorities in times of crisis in order to protect life and relieve human suffering. In addition, members routinely provide support in planning and exercise roles.

The Corps was formed in 1907 and is the oldest, and most highly decorated, uniformed women’s organisation in the UK. FANY support the Military (Regular, Reserve and Cadet Force units), the City of London Police, the Metropolitan Police, the City of London Corporation, the London Resilience Group, the London Coroners and other public organisations. Unlike the Reserve Forces, the FANY is a registered charity – all members are volunteers and are not paid for the support they give. Training takes place on most Wednesday evenings of the year and once trained, FANYs have the opportunity to take part in other non-support activities such as ceremonial, adventure training, sporting and social events.

For more information see www.fany.org.uk or call 020 7976 5459

1. Similar arrangements operate for the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. Your local unit will give you more details or visit the national websites listed on pages 6 & 7.

2. PROMOTION FROM THE RANKS Each service offers the potential for the right person to progress through the ranks and be considered for a commission.

3. PROFESSIONALY QUALIFIED OFFICERS (PQO) Reserve Officer applications from qualified Doctors, Nurses, Dentists, Vets, Chaplains, Lawyers and Cyber experts are also very welcome. In this instance the upper age limit for applying is 56.

4. UNIVERSITY OFFICER TRAINING CORPSEach service is represented by its own university organisation which provides military leadership training to undergraduates. Recruitment takes place in early October at Freshers Fairs.

CADET ORGANISATIONS

CADET FORCE ADULT VOLUNTEERSThere is always a need for enthusiastic and committed people to help the Cadet organisations inspire young people to achieve their goals. No military experience is necessary.Adult Volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds and jobs. Some are former Cadets, some are parents of Cadets, others are people who simply have a desire to assist young people, helping them towards responsible adulthood and encouraging them to achieve their full potential. In return, uniform and full training is given. Travel expenses are paid and Volunteers can be paid for a full day’s training. The Cadet organisations also offer adults the chance to acquire a whole new range of skills and qualifications. Non-uniformed Civilian Instructor roles are also available. Most Cadet detachments will train for one or two evenings a week and the occasional weekend. The highlight of each year is Annual Camp which lasts two weeks and can be anywhere in the country and sometimes abroad. If you are able to spare one or two evenings a week and want to do something productive and exciting with your free time, contact the individual Cadet organisations overleaf.

COMBINED CADET FORCE Some schools have a Combined Cadet Force (CCF) – with detachments from one or more of the Navy, Royal Marines, Army, Air Force and sometimes a band.

CCFs give pupils a chance to show their teachers another side of their characters, to think for themselves and to demonstrate their practical skills by taking part in flying, sailing, camps, community activities, weapons training and much more. Cadets also have the opportunity to gain BTEC qualifications in public services and music.

Historically CCFs have only been open to pupils of the school they are based in with most of the Adult Instructors being members of the school’s staff. They also used to be based mostly in fee paying schools but in 2012 the Government introduced the Schools Cadet Expansion Programme to encourage state schools to open a CCF.

Some of these are start-up CCFs, others are new partnerships with existing CCFs. There are currently 48 CCFs in London, spread over 70 schools.
