De Engelse vrouwen rock/ cabaret groep The Sadi s t a S i s t e r s z i j n s l e c h t s een dag i n Nederland geweest, t i j d e n s het vrouwen-festi-v a l i n de Lantaren te Rot-terdam (September '75). Iedereen was het er zonder-meer over eens dat ze het grootste succes van het hele f e s t i v a l waren. Nu z i j n ze voor een wat u i t -gebreidere toernee i n Ne-derland, waarin ze dive r s e theaters, schouwburgen, f e s -t i v a l s en clubs over heel Holland v e r s p r e i d aandoen. In Engeland hebben de dames a l een ve e l meer gevestigde naam, z o a l s j e b i j v o o r b e e l d u i t een zes weken lange r e -s i d e n t i e b i j Ronnie Scots i n Londen kunt opmaken. De Sadista S i s t e r s bestaan u i t v i j f meisjes d i e zingen theaterspelen en de teksten en muziek voor hun songs s c h r i j v e n , d i e worden be-ge l e i d door een viermans groep; bas, g i t a a r , drums en piano.

De muziek v a r i e e r t van ruig e rock t o t prachtige melo-dieuse nummers, gegoten i n een b i j z o n d e r snel v e r l o -pende show, d i e s a t i r i e s gebracht wordt, zonder dat er i n mannendiscrimininatie v e r v a l l e n wordt.

SON McGAULEY SON McGAULEY's BLUESBAND De Son McGauley's Bluesband i s begin 1975 geformeerd en kwam tot stand v i a een t o e v a l l i g e ontmoeting van deze Engelse blues-zanger met de Nederla-ndse blues- en j a z z k o r n e t t i s t Antoine Gersonr Lohman. Met een p i a n i s t en g i t a r i s t werd de

groep gekompleteerd en maakte in Amsterdam snel f u r o r e o.a. op konserten i n het Shaffy Theater, Paradiso, de Melk-weg en di v e r s e j a z z - en blues-clubs. De eerste elpee van de groep i s i n voor b e r e i d i n g . Son McGauley De 55 - j a r i g e blueszanger Son McGauley staat i n Engeland bekend a l s de 'Gipsv blues-singer '. Hoewel Son i n de Engelandse Midlands i s geboren ( z i j n vader vergat hem 'aan t e geven', waardoor exakte geboortedatum on-bekend i s ) , noemt h i j z i c h , z o a l s de meeste zigeuners, een ' t r a v e l l i n g man'. Dat kl o p t . H i j zwierf over de gehele wereld en had d a a r b i j ongeveer a l l e beroepen d i e men z i c h maar denken kan. Jazz en blues heeft echter a l t i j d een b e l a n g r i j k e p l a a t s i n z i j n leven ingenomen. Sinds j a n u a r i j . l . v e s t i g d e h i j z i c h i n Amsterdam en

vormt bovengenoemde groep en mag z i c h verheugen i n een groeiende b e l a n g s t e l l i n g , o.a. door z i j n i m p r o v i s a t i e s op de omstandigheden t e r plekke en z i j n vooroorlogse jazz-songs, d i e i n Nederland steeds populairder aan het worden z i j n .

Antoine Gerson Lohman Son McGauley wordt i n Neder-land o.a. begele i d t door j a z z - k o r n e t t i s t Antoine Gerson Lohman(35), wiens muzikale c a r r i e r e i n 1953 s t a r t i n d i v e r s e j a z z - o r k e s ten. In 1961 maakt h i j a l s k o r n e t t i s t i n een Engels j a z z - o r k e s t aldaar de 'trad boom' mee, hetgeen hem de kans geeft met de belang-r i j k s t e j a z z - m u s i c i van Engeland i n jam sessions te spelen.

GEORGE MELLY George Melly i s the f i r s t great B r i t i s h j a z z e n t e r t a i -ner - the major discovery of the mid 70's, although discovery i s not r e a l l y ap-p r o p r i a t e because he created himself i n the e a r l y 1950*s when t r a d i t i o n a l j a z z was the going t h i n g . In the most recent Melody Maker p o l l , he was voted B r i t a i n ' s Number One Jazz Singer, he i s one of the world's leading ex-perts on s u r r e a l i s t a r t , author of two big s e l l i n g books ('Owning Up, the story of the r i p r o a r i n g one-night stands he played i n the 1950's and 'Revolt i n t o S t y l e ' a s c h o l a r l y a n a l y s i s of the youth eruption of the 1960's). His work as a f i l m and t e l e -v i s i o n c r i t i c f o r the London Observer won him the ' C r i t i c of the Year' award, and f o r f i f t e e n years he wrote the balloons f o r the D a i l y M a i l ' s popular 'Flook' cartoon s t r i p . George i s a husband, f a t h e r , moped-rider, gourmet and defender of r a d i c a l causes (one of the best defence w i t -nesses i n the Oz magazine t r i a l ) .

Toen i n 1905 tekenaar Winsor McCay aan z i j n nieuwe s t r i p " L i t t l e Nemo i n Slumberland" zat te werken, kon h i j n i e t vermoeden, dat de naam d i e h i j z i j n swingende f a n f a r e -korps gaf, zo'n 70 j a a r l a t e r door een popgroep i n Neder-land gebruikt zou worden. Ernst Jansz, Jose B e l i n f a n t e en Johnny Lodewijks ( a l i e n l i d van de voormalige CCC inc. vormden samen met zanger F r i e d r i c h Hlawatsch en bas-s i s t P i e t Dekker onder deze naam hun nieuwe band. ROADSHOW De Friends maken deel u i t van een i n t e r n a t i o n a l e ge-meenschap van beroepsdwazen. Het gezelschap van 10 spe l e r s en muzikanten t a r t elke om-s c h r i j v i n g . Hun nieuwe show "Rats Asses and Other T a i l s " bestaat u i t sketches d i e o-v e r a l i n de wereld spelen, een soort g e i l l u s t r e e r d r e i s -v e r h a a l . In de show o.a. het B a l l e t of the Cabbages e n d e Hooliman, de god van het f r u i t , de Beroemde Van Ren-t a l s (ook bekend van de j i v e -f i v e - maar we z i j n maar met z'n 3~en) en een r e i s naar het land van Badgag. De groep z a l ook geimproviseerde voor-s t e l l i n g e n geven en v e r s c h i l -lende s t r a a t v e r t o n i n g e n . A l l e s v e r s t e r k t door de Friends Band, een funky rock groep d i e geen verdere i n t r o -duktie nodig heeft.

Theatre S l a p s t i q u e i s a come-dy troupe that uses and misu-ses every t h e a t r i c a l s k i l l and convention f o r comic ef-f e c t . The various s k i l l s of the troupe i n c l u d e : mime, mu-s i c , song, parody, dance, a c r o b a t i c s , tumbling, drama, impressions, stage combat, sound e f f e c t s , l i g h t e f f e c t s , clowning, wordplay, j u g g l i n g , business with props, etc.

What makes t h i s show more than a b r i l l i a n t s e r i e s of sketches apart from i t s r e -current theme, i s i t s concern with the idea of theatre. The t e x t , though ingenious, i s never contrapuntal: i t s humour i s indeed based on dreadful and b e a u t i f u l word-play, which at times a t t a i n s l i n g u i s t i c fantasy of a high order. But t h i s i s not the backbone of the show. The

high standards of presenta-t i o n of the more t r a d i t i o n a l forms of theatre. MARI0NETTEN Waar z i j n de marionettenspe-l e r s u i t Funhouse gebleven? Z i j maakten een eigen nieuw programma voor volwassenen. Margit de V r i e s , ook een oud Funhouse-medewerkster, t r e e d t daarin z e f s t a n d i g en i n com-b i n a t i e met de marionetten op. Het i s een zeer afwisse-lend, levendig kijk-program-ma geworden. Voor iedereen die gevoel heeft voor het fa n t a s t i s c h e , h e t absurde en het magisch-realisme, i s h i e r de kans om een v o o r s t e l l i n g te z i e n d i e door de v i s u e l e benadering nog lang i n de herinnering z a l b l i j v e n . De inhoud v e r t e l l e n i s net zo m o e i l i j k a l s na het z i e n proberen te zeggen wat men gezien heeft. Drie mensen en t i e n t a l l e n marionetten staan k l a a r om u te boeien en te vermaken.

To get to the inner s e l f of the i n d i v i d u a l . I want to use my body f o r t h i s purpose. For t h i s I t r y and t r a i n i t through dance, pantomime, body language and yoga. I l i k e to choose a theme, sen-s a t i o n or idea and improvise on i t . My main idea i s to communi-cate with other human beings. I think that the body can be the instrument of that which i s out i f our c o n t r o l "the s p i r i t " . I want to avoid a l l s u p e r f l u ess movements, j u s t l e a v i n g the necessary to get the f e e -l i n g across. I th i n k that every part of the body can say something.

TROUPE The Great S a l t Lake Mime Troupe i s a v e r s a t i l e ten member company which i n c o r -porates the a r t s of Mime, Dance, Clowning and Music i n i t s performance. Through c o n t i n u a l e x p l o r a t i o n and im-p r o v i s a t i o n i n a wide range of performing s i t u a t i o n s , they have developed a unique f l e x i b i l i t y which allows them to o f f e r any type of show, making use of any number of performers and musicians. The Troupe makes use of c l a s s i c a l mime techniques, but does so i n combination with Modern Dance and Clow-ning to present a s t y l e to-t a l l y i t s own. The d i s c i p l i n e and i s o l a t i o n techniques of c l a s s i c a l mime are enhanced by the f l u i d i t y and exten-sions c h a r a c t e r i s t i c of the dancer, as w e l l as the comic timin g of the clown. Hauser Urkater noemt z i c h naar de achternaam van twee leden en een samenstelling van de woorden orkest en theate r . De leden z i j n jonge mensen, stuk voor stuk feno-menale i n s t r u m e n t a l i s t e n , die aan hun popgroepen z i j n ontgroeid of d i e i n s t r a a t -toneel of e l d e r s hun sporen hebben verdiend. Z i j brengen een o o r s p r o n k e l i j k e show, waarbij nu eens de nadruk op de muziek en de l i e d j e s v a l t , dan weer op een krankzinnige show met c i r c u s a c h t i g e , ca-baretachtige, akrobatiekach-t i g e , clowneske en wat nog allemaal n i e t meer toestan-den. Parodie, p e r s i f l a g e , s l a p s t i c k en gewoon gekdoen, kenmerken een programma a l s "Famous A r t i s t s " . In het eerste deel v e r t e l l e n korte toneelmatige scenes en Neder-landse l i e d e r e n een eenvou-d i g verhaal over v i e r mensen, die hun l o t op de kermis v i n -den. In het deel na de pauze d r a a i t de show rond de eigen-z i n n i g e presentator Lex en z i j n a s s i s t e n t Frank. Hun optreden wordt afgewisseld met vokale, v i s u e l e en i n s t r u -mentale groepsnummers.

MIME TROUPE OF AMERICA

MIMETROUPE i s a company of mimes founded i n June, 1975. A f t e r a summer of i n t e n s i v e work, the Troupe premiered with a mime adaption of the medieval m o r a l i t y play Eve-ryman. The c r i t i c s c a l l e d the production "compelling". A f t e r the run of Everyman, MIMETROUPE channeled i t s e-nergies i n t o concentrated e x p l o r a t i o n of o r i g i n a l and avantgarde mime forms as w e l l as i n n o v a t i v e s t y l e s of performance. The end r e s u l t was a dynamic show, c a l l e d simply Mimetroupe.

"3-D T.V.", home e n t e r t a i n -ment with holograms i n the year 2000. "The P i c n i c " , i s a solo mime with sound e f f e c t s i n which ants are armies, c r i c k e t s symphonies, and mosquitoes dive bombers.

LONDON MIME 6R0UPE

De London Mime Group i s een wat povere benaming voor een brok onvervalst B r i t s v a r i e -t e - t h e a t e r . De groep komt voort u i t de Friends Road-show en dat zegt genoeg. Wie de afgelopen jaren de Friends bezig heeft gezien weet wat dat betekent: o r i g i n e e l show-theater, een p o t p o u r r i van toneel, mime, muziek, dans, show, goochelen e t c e t e r a . Een deel van d i e l a d i n g heeft de London Mime Group meege-nomen met mime a l s c e n t r a l e as en dan gekonsentreerd i n het v e e l z i j d i g e t a l e n t van Norma Rae, l e e r l i n g e n van de beroemde Marcel Marceau. Ze geeft een nieuwe v i t a l i t e i t aan het t r a d i t i o n e l e mime a l s een meestal ietwat t r i e s t e clown en haar nummers z i j n binnen het programma de meer serieuze intermezzo's. Om Norma heen wordt een opgeto-gen v a r i e t e opgezet met on-der meer een k o s t e l i j k e goo-c h e l t o e r van de meestermagier Alan P o r t e r , een absurde ope-r a t i e s c e n e van Jean Paul B e l l en ingetogen trues van de clown P i r o .

Harry Langdon Harry Langdon speelde een na-l e f en van z i j n stuk gebracht type. H i j p e r s o n i f i e e r d e de t w i j f e l s en angsten die i e -der mens eig^en z i j n . Vandaar ook dat het publiek z i c h v o l -l e d i g met hem kon i d e n t i f i -ceren. Van hem i s de u i t -spraak dat de v i e r grootste s t i m u l i om mensen aan het lachen te maken z i j n : het a l s v e r s t i j f d b l i j v e n staan, automatisme, v e r s t r o o i d h e i d en a s o c i a a l h e i d . Dit werkt inderdaad zeer komies Czo-lang het maar voornamelijk op f i l m gebeurt].

Larry Semon Larry Semon begon z i j n car-r i e r e a l s c a r t o o n i s t voor de New York Sun en andere b l a -den. H i j begon b'ij de f i l m a l s r e g i s s e u r van Frank Da-n i e l s comedies. Ster van een s e r i e werd h i j i n 1917. Z i j n f i l m s hadden over het algemeen weinig verhaal en vee l achtervolgingen. H i j werkte zeer lang en hard aan gags (grappen). Soms was er de hele dag f i l m opgenomen, zonder dat de r e s u l t a t e n naar z i j n z i n waren. Dan deed h i j het de volgende dag opnieuw, aangezien h i j per-f e c t i o n i s t was. H i j heeft het type, dat h i j speelde, geba-seerd op een cartoon die h i j o o i t gemaakt had. Witte clowns-make-up, bolhoed, ten-

nisschoenen en een broek die to t z i j n oksels kwam met he-l e gekke b r e t e l s . A l t i j d met een g r i j n s op z i j n g e z i c h t .

Billy Ritchie B i l l i e R i t c h i e , i n 1877 i n Glasgow geboren, begon f i l m s te maken i n 1914. H i j werkte voornamelijk voor de Lehr-man-KnockOut Comedies, waar-van velen zeiden dat die een rechtstreekse i m i t a t i e waren van de Keystone Comedies. B i l l i e R i t c h i e speelde een "tramp", b i j n a i d e n t i e k aan die van C h a r l i e Chaplin. H i j heeft a l t i j d beweerd dat h i j dat karakter a l speelde i n 1887 toen h i j met z i j n zus-t e r i n v a u d e v i l l e optrad, Chaplin heeft h i e r en p u b l i c nooit op gereageerd...

Ford S t e r l i n g was een b r i l -j a n t e bekkentrekker. H i j kon z i j n wenkbrauwen zo op en neer en heen en weer be-wegen en z i j n mond en ogen zo vertrekken dat het vaak leek of ze el k a a r steeds maar over en weer achterna zaten. In "A MUDBATH" speelt h i j een door de wol geverfde schurk, die een r u z i e met Mack Sennet en Mabel Normand even r e g e l t door de stop u i t een meertje te trekken.

Snub Pollard

Harry "Snub" P o l l a r d begon met v i e r j a a r b e l a n g r i j k e b i j r o l l e n te spelen i n de f i l m s van Harold Lloyd. Toen Lloyd van onereelers naar tworeelers overging, [one-r e e l = ongeveer 10 minuten] mocht h i j z e l f de s t e r z i j n . H i j maakte tussen oktober 1919 en augustus 1922 109 onereelers. Een g e v o e l v o l l e b l i k staarde u i t z i j n grote ogen en h i j had een enorme hangende snor. H i j kende n i e t zoveel trues a l s andere ko-mieken, maar dat t r a c h t t e h i j te compenseren door een karakter te spelen i n z i j n f i l m s , hetgeen voor een f i l m van 10 t o t 15 minuten echt geen sine cure i s !
