Year 3Composition.
Supporting modules:Music Project Advanced Orchestration and Arranging Music Education Workshop Music Management.
Course overviewYou have the choice to study Music Composition as a single specialist course or the unique opportunity to study Composition combined with Music Management or Music Technology.
We offer you the opportunity and the skills to compose in a wide range of styles, for traditional forms and ensembles as well as for fi lm and other media. The specialist composition modules will allow you to master a wide range of skills by taking you through a sequence of ‘technical workbooks’. This holistic approach will help give your music a clear sense of rhythmic and harmonic directions, equipping you with the technical skills that will make your music ‘breathe’ more freely.
While we take a structured approach to nurturing your development as a composer, our aim is that you should, through the unique one-to-one teaching, spread your wings and fl y in your own direction.
Audition and portfolioYou are required to attend an audition unless you have recently passed a LCM grade 8 exam.
How did composers of the past do what they did – and how does the music of today rest upon that foundation? So many courses are content with putting old masterpieces in a glass case and gazing at them from a distance. Our course aims to open them up and see what is going on inside.

AwardThe DMus is achieved through one of the following:
Creative research in humanities has become an important area of postgraduate study at Masters and Doctoral level. It has allowed performers and practitioners to remediate their work as research, and refl ect on the processes as much as the impact of practice.
Due to its focus on ‘creative research’, and its ‘submission pathway’, the DMus aims to attract recently qualifi ed postgraduates, and professional musicians wanting to gain doctoral recognition for their considerable skills and experience.
The DMus aims to extend the richly eclectic musical experience students enjoy on our undergraduate and Masters programmes to doctoral level, enhancing the London College of Music’s (LCM’s) burgeoning postgraduate community.
There are four DMus ‘pathways’:DMus in CompositionDMus in PerformanceDMus in Electronic/Electro-acoustic Composition DMus in Music Production.
Course overviewTo prepare for the MPhil/DMus degree, you may need to complete the LCM’s Research Methods module. This module aims to train students in research methods and critical methodology, so they can undertake creative research and critical commentary. It will also enable you to develop your writing and analytical skills.
Along with an overview of the world of musicology, the module also covers:
Initiating research and creative researchIdentifying and evaluating sourcesIdentifying signifi cant questions, interesting topics, and original creative ideasPresenting a critical stance and developing a critical commentaryIdentifying and practising academic styles and creative processesProviding models for research and creative research through the exploration of case studies and the completion of assignmentsProviding an overview of professional institutions and the skills needed for publication.
The DMus (a Practice-led Doctorate) offers an alternative route to the traditional PhD to experienced practitioners wanting to make an outstanding and innovative contribution to a specialist area.
