2. London is the capital and largest urban area in England and the United Kingdom. An important settlement for two millennia, Londons history goesback to its founding by the Romans. Since its settlement, London has beenpart of many important movements and phenomena throughout history, suchas the English Renaissance , the Industrial Revolution , and the Gothic Revival. The citys core, the ancient City of London , still retains its limitedmedieval ruins; but since at least the 19th century the name "London" hasalso referred to the whole metropolis that has developed around it London is one of the worlds leading business, financial and culturalcentres,]and its influence in politics , education, entertainment , media,fashion and the arts contribute to its status as a major global city . Londonboasts four World Heritage Sites: The Palace of Westminster, WestminsterAbbey and St. Margarets Church; the Tower of London; the historicsettlement of Greenwich; and the Royal Botanic Gardens The city is a majortourist destination both for domestic and overseas visitors.]Londonspopulation draws from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, andover 300 languages are spoken within the city. London has a population of8,278,251 people and the metropolitan area is estimated to have a totalpopulation of about 10 million people. 3. The tower bridge The tower bridge isan important symbolof London. It is 65ms high and thecentral part can beraised up when bigships pass through 4. The houses of Parliament The houses of Parliament are the seat of the British parliamentary democracy: it is divided into House of Lords and House of Commons. 5. The London Eye It is a panoramicwheel situated onthe bank of the riverThames. There are32 cabins and fromthe top you canenjoy a fantasticview of the city, asfar as 40 kms 6. Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the Residence of the Royal Family: every morning at 11 o clock theres the changing of the guards and millions of tourists watch it. 7. Madame Tussaud Its a very famouswax museumfounded in 1902 ;there you can findthe wax copies of allimportant people ofHistory . Outside thismuseum there arealways long queuesof tourists! 8. The BIG BEN The Big Ben is afamous clock on thebell tower of theHouses ofParliament : it wasbuilt in 1862 byBenjamin Hall. It is62 ms high and itrings every fifteenminutes 9. Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is a famous square which commemorates the victory of Admiral Nelson against Napoleon in Trafalgar Battle. In the middle of this square theres a column with Nelsons statue on the top. 10. Piccadilly Circus Piccadilly Circus is acentral square ofLondon, where sixstreets meettogether. Its afantastic shoppingarea and its full ofrestaurants, nightsclubs and otherenterteinments 11. Harrods and Selfridges These are the biggestand most expensivedepartment stores ofLondon. You can findquite everything but prices are very high. During Christmasperiod they areparticularly attractive 12. The Tower of London Its a famous castlewhere the Jewels of theCrown are kept. The guardians arecalled Beefeaters.Around this castletheres a large gardenand the legend saysthat when birds leavethis garden, the BritishEmpire will finish. 13. Carnaby Street Carnaby Street is a famous road centrally located, near Oxford Street. There are many shops dedicated to the 60s and -above all- to the Beatles. 14. Westmister Abbey Its the most famouscathedral of England.Here royal weddings,funerals, andceremonies take place.In this cathedral areburied all famous kings,queens, poets andwriters of the EnglishHistory. Among them,the famous writerWilliam Shakespeare. 15. THE PARKS The most importantparks are Hyde Parkand S. James Park.Here people canrelax during lunchbreak , play,listen tomusic, walk alongthe small lakes,listen to the cornerspeakers . 16. The Underground Visitors in London usually travel on the underground ( Tube) The construction work began in 1860 and it opened in 1903. It covers about 2,400 kmswith 270 stations and carries every day 4 millions passengers. 17. 10 Downing Street This is the addressof the PrimeMinister. Actuallyhes Gordon Brown,he has politicalpower and plays abig role ininternational politics 18. SohoSoho is an ethnic suburb where you can find all kinds of typical restaurants( Italian, Chinese, Greek, Mexican, Indian, ) and ethnic shops 19. Museums The National Gallery isan important artMuseum and it collectsinternationalmasterpieces The British museum isan exhibition of ancientart ( Roman , Greek,Egyptian.) The Natural ScienceMuseum is veryinteresting with lots ofscientific experiments 20. The docks The docks is avery elegant andmodern suburb ofLondon , situated onthe river Thames.Once upon a time itwas a harbour 21. The Stock Exchange andfinancial area LSE ( London StockExchange) is the borsa valori ofLondon. It wasfounded in 1801 andis one of the mostimportant stockexchanges of theworld 22. Greenwich Greenwich, outsideLondon , is a smallvillage, very famousfor the meridianzero of the Earth .London is one hourearlier than Italy. 23.
