b | Together as One Loma Linda | 2017 Homecoming

Dear Alumni, former staff and friends,

Our Homecoming celebration is fast approaching! We invite you to participate in the 1st annual One Loma Linda Homecoming. It has been a dream of mine to invite all of you to share in one campus celebration. No matter which school you graduated from, we are celebrating the legacy of Loma Linda University Health and the alumni who live this legacy every day.

Over 111 years ago, we started on a journey and together we have reached many accomplishments. Over 30,000 alumni are invited to this homecoming week. Let us share in fellowship that spans generations, disciplines, cultures and faiths. Together we are stronger, together we advance the future of health care.

Our alumni are a special breed, their careers are meaningful to so many lives. It is our greatest pleasure to host this week and to celebrate you. This has become another way to be One Loma Linda — to educate, motivate and support our many alumni and friends who anchor at least part of their identity around this place.

Please take time to review the schedule and register for the multiple events we have to offer. Loma Linda awaits you from Thursday, March 2 through Monday, March 6, 2017.

See you soon!

Cordially,

Richard Hart, MD, DrPHPresidentLoma Linda University Health

Annual Postgraduate Convention (APC)Since its first illustrious offering in 1933, the Annual Postgraduate Convention, or APC as it is affectionately known, has grown from an afternoon to a four-day event of continuing medical education. Featuring world-class speakers and topics, the APC is a great place for any physician to learn, network, and receive continuing medical education credits.

The APC is sponsored by the Alumni Association of the School of Medicine of Loma Linda University. This activity is designed to change and diminish the gap between evidence-based medicine and practice.

Healthy People in Healthy CommunitiesHealthy People in Healthy Communities is the premier conference on Lifestyle Medicine and the Built Environment. This symposium underlines Loma Linda University’s legacy of promoting health, longevity, and wholeness, while creating a platform for exploring the role of *blue zone areas as a paradigm for population health. This is an effort to inform effective multidisciplinary public health actions aimed at improving conditions that make us healthy.

*Blue Zone® is a registered trademark of Blue Zones LLC, and refers to places in the world where residents have much greater longevity. The community of Loma Linda was designated a blue zone in a National Geographic article by Dan Buettner. (Buettner, Dan: “The Secrets of Long Life.”, page 9. National Geographic, November 2005.)

Homecoming KickoffJoin us in kicking off Loma Linda University Health’s first ever homecoming at our celebration on Thursday evening. You and your family will have a blast with delicious food from a variety of food trucks, carnival games, opportunity drawings and live music from our very own alumni and special guest, the Wedgewood Trio. Savor some roasted corn, win a ring toss and visit your school booth to reminisce and reconnect with your fellow alumni. If you graduated within the last 10 years, there is a special booth and swag just for you. Looking forward to seeing you at the Homecoming Kickoff!

Friday Tours and Open HousesDo you wonder what has changed since your last visit to your alma mater? You can find out by joining one of the available tours or by visiting the schools during the open houses on Friday, March 3, from 1-4:30 p.m. You can hop on a bus or take a walk on one of these specially planned tours.

Tour the construction site of where our new state-of-the-art hospital tower will be built and walk through our new San Bernardino campus, the San Manuel Gateway College. See how the campus has transformed by touring the schools on main campus and by attending their open houses. Tour groups are limited to 20 individuals.

Spiritual ProgrammingSteeped in Loma Linda University Health’s rich history, is the mission to continue the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ. As we come together as One Loma Linda, on Thursday, March 2 through Monday, March 6,, our spiritual programming for the weekend will focus on this mission. Plan now to attend some or all of these special opportunities – reminders of why we do what we do every day.

On Friday, March 3, join us for a mission and prayer breakfast. This will be an opportunity for those who have served overseas to come together, hear a short devotional, find their name on the mission globe and celebrate God’s leading.

Friday evening, join us for vespers in the Loma Linda University Church. Inspirational music and guest speaks will inspire you and renew your spirit.

Saturday, March 4, begins with a prayer walk. Join us for a thoughtful stroll around the inner campus. Together, we will have an opportunity to reflect on our history and pray for the future of our campus, our students and the lives of those we serve every day.

Our worship service will take place in the Drayson Center, where you’ll hear stirring stories and messages from students, alumni and guest speakers and a sermon by Randy Roberts.

Following afternoon reunions, please join us once more at the University Church for the annual Mission Vespers.

Haystack LunchImagine tables laden with corn chips, mounds of lettuce, buckets of beans, stacks of cheese, piles of olives, bowls of salsa, sour cream, ranch dressing, guacamole and more! Oh, my!

Sabbath lunch on the Drayson Superfield will be the biggest haystack feed ever put together in Southern California. Best of all, you can layer your ingredients in the proper order (everyone has their own idea of what that might be). Join us for the food – stay for the fun!

Loma Linda’s Got TalentJoin us Saturday night in the Drayson Center for an evening of unparalleled entertainment featuring some of Loma Linda’s finest alumni talent. Hollywood’s got nothing on us.

Homecoming 5K Fun RunJoin us for a 5K fun run/walk around Loma Linda. The Start and finish will be at the Drayson Center. Register early to get a commemorative t-shirt while supplies last. The proceeds raised by this inaugural homecoming 5K will benefit special funds set up in memory of Dr. Sam Soret (School of Public Health) and Matthew Lynn Schrader (School of Allied Health Professions).

Schedule of Events

This year was a special occasion in the life of our School, in which we celebrated our 50th anniversary. For the first time, we are hosting a universitywide homecoming, Thursday, March 2 through Monday, March 6, and inviting our alumni from all of our schools to join us in celebrating the values and mission of our University. It promises to be a grand occasion in which we celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni and share in the presentation of research, evidence-based clinical practice and joint sessions of common interest. It will be a wonderful time for family and friends, with a special kick-off event the first night and a combined worship service on Homecoming Sabbath. We will have our special time as a school to meet and greet, celebrate the accomplishments, enjoy the reunion of old friends and classmates and recognize your contributions to our communities and to the world. Please accept this as a personal invitation to join us and your classmates in our 1st Annual University Homecoming.

Elizabeth Bossert, PhD, RNDean, School of Nursing

Greetings to the School of Nursing Alumni! As we enter our 112th year of nursing at Loma Linda University, we are blessed to celebrate an alumni family that has grown to 9,458 graduates. It is important to remember that this number not only represents the many generations of our past undergraduate and graduate students, but also the countless relationships and memories that shape the collective LLUSN journey. It represents a chapter in the lives of our students that, through trial and triumph, brought their calling to fruition and prepared them to give compassionate and excellent nursing care wherever their careers took them. We recently identified a new vision statement that perfectly reflects the purpose of our school: “Preparing Tomorrow’s Nurse.” This Homecoming weekend, we look forward to reconnecting with you and celebrating the shared experiences that have prepared each of you to be the nurse you are today. We look forward to seeing you in March 2017!
