Volume 1 Issue 1 Written and Edited by Allison Perry Konnichiha! Welcome to the first ever Lolita Newsletter! Each week there will be a new issue with a new topic. This week’s topic is going to be a basic introductory into Lolita. In later issues, they will discuss different styles of Lolita, how build a Lolita wardrobe, how to act like a proper Lolita, among many others. Each issue will also include a fun game or riddle (not necessarily pertaining to Lolita) to complete for prizes. And now, on to this week’s main event! What is Lolita? Lolita is a branch of Japanese street fashion called Harajuku. Harajuku is named from the Harajuku train station where the youth of Tokyo go and dress in absurd clothing that is not “normal”. Lolita itself is inspired by Rococo and Victorian era clothing. The style started in the late 1970’s when clothing lines such as Angelic Pretty, Milk and Pink House started producing clothing that would be considered Lolita by t o d a y s s t a n d a r d s . The term “Lolita” is a specific look created by following strict guidelines to produce a piece of childlike clothing. This term is not to be confused with Vladimir Nabokov’s novel, in which a middle-aged college professor becomes infatuated with a year old girl. The style of clothing is not about looking sexy, but covering up most of the skin that today’s fashions reveal. In next week’s issue, it will go into detail of the history of Lolita. It will also include a Lolita crossword as well. The Lolita who has completed the crossword the most completely will receive a f r e e h e a d d r e s s o r a c c e s s o r y .
