lOIre ValleY Seeing in tHe 2014 vintage witH a Smile! After all our worries about the rain and cold of summer, Sep-tember turned out to be sunny after all and we were able to bring in a healthy harvest. The grapes were beautifully ripe, and we picked them just when they showed the exact aromatic profile we wanted. Quality promises to be excellent this year, and on the whole, quantities are fine – although certain appellations have returned yields lower than in 2013. Let’s zoom in on the 2014 vintage and on the winegrowers who are all smiles!

PAyS NANTAiS: ExPrESSivE, PrECiSE WiNES in the radiant sunshine of an indian summer – with over 80% more sunshine than usual – harvesting took place in ideal condi-tions. growers were in their vineyards from 10th September on-wards: with September’s perfect weather conditions, they could take their time to pinpoint the exact moment to pick their grapes. the grapes were excellent, with good sugar levels; however, the level of concentration in the berries just before harvest-ing thwarted any earlier predictions of copious yields. tasting and other analyses showed good ripeness and firm, aromatic grapes. initial reports lead us to infer that wines will be elegant, expressive, taut and precise. Prepare for a deliciously complex muscadet 2014!

ANjoU SAUmUr: ThE viNTAgE of oUr DrEAmS! the famous ‘douceur angevine’ – that gentle anjou climate – has done it again. Following an exceptionally successful flower-ing season and ideal conditions, growers looked forward to the harvests with optimism. grapes were harvested at the peak of ripeness, and the vintage is looking very promising indeed for anjou Saumur. whites and rosés are highly aromatic, showing a fresh, citrusy profile with notes of ripe fruit. Cabernet Franc reds are showing a rich aromatic palette and a maturity that leads us to expect some excellent cuvées for laying down. late autumn brought some beautiful weather, perfect for the sweet whites; these promise to be fruity and well-balanced. Quality, in short, is excellent, and quantities on a par with 2012 and 2013. overall, the wines are concentrated, with a notable finesse in the Chenins. we would have to go back as far as 1997 to find another vintage of this calibre!

WEST of ThE ToUrAiNE – rEDS AND WhiTES iN PErfECT hArmoNy red grapes have shown a remarkable level of phenolic ripe-ness, giving exceptional quality and elegant tannins. Caber-net Franc reds are well-coloured, with blueberry and black fruit flavours; tannins are already smooth and rounded and balance is almost perfect. the Chenin Blancs are the best we have seen since 2010, while vouvray demi-secs are also promising excellent quality. rosés are fresh and smooth. this vintage is showcasing every varietal to its best advantage – but it will pay to stay vigilant throughout the maturing process to avoid losing this promising edge. volumes are likely to re-main stable or to fall, depending on appellation.

EAST of ThE ToUrAiNE – SUPErb SAUvigNoNS September’s magnificent weather meant that Sauvignons could be harvested according to the aromatic profile grow-ers were seeking. aromatic expression is powerful and quite excellent: crisp and clean with notes of citrus. across some of the best parcels, ripeness could be maximised to give greater texture potential and lower acidity levels. Here, the Sauvignons developed notes of tropical fruit, to make rich, high quality wines. two different profiles, then, which may ei-ther differentiate the cuvées, or make blends with maximum complexity and perfect balance on the palate.

SPArkLiNg WiNES: SomE ExCELLENT bLENDS oN ThE horizoN! this has been a good harvest for sparkling wines. the Char-donnays are beautifully ripe, and the Chenins are also show-ing good quality overall, despite some incidence of botrytis in the Crémant parcels. Chardonnay yields are on the low side, but yields of Chenin are good. Quality is on a par with 2012, if not better. vinification and prise de mousse have progressed under very good conditions, and the first colours and flavours presage a rich, complex vintage with wines needing only a period of ageing sur lattes. we can look forward to seeing some excellent blends!

lOIre wineSExtending alongside the Loire and its tributaries, the Loire’s winegrowing area is largely concentrated in 4 major production regions: Pays Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine and Centre Loire. much of the area is inscribed on the UNESCo World heritage list and has an identity all of its own, made up of a mosaic of wines and vineyards.

Der Jahrgang 2014 zauBert ein läCHeln auF Die liPPenNach befürchtungen aufgrund des niederschlagsreichen und kühlen Sommers konnten dank des sonnigen Septem-bers gesunde Trauben mit schöner reife und den jeweils gewünschten Aromaprofilen geerntet werden. Das Quali-tätsniveau dieses jahrgangs zeigt sich vielversprechend und die volumen sind im großen und ganzen zufrieden-stellend, auch wenn die Erträge in einigen Appellationen niedriger sind als 2013. Ein blick auf den jahrgang 2014, der den Winzern ein Lächeln auf die Lippen zaubert!

PAyS NANTAiS: EiN AUSDrUCkSSTArkEr UND PräziSEr jAhrgANg Dank spätsommerlichem Sonnenschein (mit einer um 80 % höheren Sonneneinstrahlung als normal) fand die weinlese unter idealen voraussetzungen statt. Die winzer waren be-reits am 10. September in den weinbergen. Da die witte-rungsbedingungen aber den ganzen September über opti-mal blieben, konnten sie sich zeit nehmen, um den besten moment für die lese abzuwarten und schöne trauben mit guten reifegraden zu ernten. Die Konzentration der Beeren kurz vor der lese wirkte sich lediglich nachteilig auf die ur-sprünglich hohen ertragsprognosen aus. Die analysen und Kostproben bestätigten die schöne reife mit festen, aroma-tischen Trauben. Diese erste Bilanz lässt auf feine, straf-fe und präzise Weine mit viel Ausdruckskraft hoffen. Der muscadet 2014 verspricht komplex und köstlich zu werden!

ANjoU SAUmUr: EiN TrAUmhAfTEr jAhrgANgDas milde Klima des anjou hat wieder einmal seine wirkung gezeigt! nach einer außergewöhnlichen Blüte konnten die winzer diese weinlese unter idealen voraussetzungen in angriff nehmen. Dank perfekt reifer trauben präsentiert sich der Jahrgang in der region anjou Saumur außerordentlich vielversprechend. Die Weiß- und roséweine sind ausge-sprochen aromatisch mit Noten von zitrus- und frischen früchten sowie Spuren von reifem obst. Die rotweine aus dem Cabernet Franc zeichnen sich durch eine herrliche Aro-menvielfalt aus, wobei der reifegrad der trauben auf gute ergebnisse bei den lagerweinen hoffen lässt. Der schöne Spätsommer war auch für die süßen Weißweine förderlich, die mit viel Ausgewogenheit und fruchtigkeit sowie einem im vergleich zu 2012 und 2013 höheren volumen ebenfalls ein gutes Qualitätsniveau versprechen. insgesamt sind die weine konzentriert mit einer besonders bei den Chenins ausgeprägten finesse. eindeutig der beste Jahrgang seit 1997!

im WESTEN DEr ToUrAiNE: roT- UND WEiSSWEiNE miT PErfEkTEr bALANCE Die außergewöhnliche phenolische reife der roten trauben hat zu einer bemerkenswerten Qualität und Eleganz der Tannine geführt. Die Cabernet Francs präsentieren schöne farben, Aromen von heidelbeeren und schwarzen früch-ten sowie bereits sehr runde Tannine. Dieser Jahrgang wird sich durch fast perfekte Ausgewogenheit auszeichnen. Die Chenins sind die schönsten, die seit 2010 erzeugt wurden, und auch die halbtrockenen vouvrays deuten auf ein sehr hohes Niveau hin. Die roséweine vereinen fruchtigkeit und vollmundigkeit. Dieser Jahrgang bringt die besten merkma-le jeder rebsorte zum ausdruck, doch noch ist achtsamkeit gefragt, damit diese herausragenden eigenschaften beim ausbau erhalten bleiben. Die volumen sind im vergleich zum vorjahr je nach appellation stabil oder geringer.

im oSTEN DEr ToUrAiNE: fANTASTiSChE SAUvigNoNSDank des herrlichen Septemberwetters konnten auch hier die trauben in abhängigkeit der gewünschten aromaprofile gelesen werden. Bemerkenswert ist die hohe aromatische Ausdruckskraft mit reinen, präzisen zitrusnoten. in den schönsten Parzellen wurde den trauben noch mehr zeit zum reifen gelassen, sodass sie zusätzliches Potenzial entwickeln und Säure abbauen konnten. Diese Sauvignons – vollmun-dige weine von hoher Qualität – zeichnen sich durch Noten exotischer früchte aus. Diese beiden Profile können unter-schieden werden, entweder durch separat abgefüllte weine oder anhand von assemblagen mit dem ziel, weine von ma-ximaler Komplexität und perfekter Balance zu erzeugen.

SChAUmWEiNE: groSSArTigE ASSEmbLAgEN iN AUSSiChT Für die Schaumweine war es eine gelungene lese. Die Chardonnays waren schön reif und auch die Chenins – trotz Botrytis-Befall in einigen Schaumweinparzellen – überzeug-ten durch gute Qualität. Die erträge waren beim Chardonnay eher gering, beim Chenin jedoch auf einem guten niveau. Die Qualität des Jahrgangs ist mit 2012 vergleichbar oder sogar höher. Die vinifikation und die Schaumbildung fanden unter guten voraussetzungen statt und die ersten farben und Aromen deuten auf einen vollmundigen und komple-xen jahrgang hin, dessen weine nur darauf warten, lange zeit sur lattes („auf latten“) reifen zu können. Die grundwei-ne versprechen großartige assemblagen!

DIe lOIre-weineDas Weinbaugebiet Loire erstreckt sich entlang der Loire und ihrer Nebenfl üsse und umfasst im Wesentlichen 4 große Erzeugerregionen: Pays Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine und Centre Loire. Das Loire-Tal, das teilweise in das UNESCo-Welterbe der menschheit aufgenommen wurde, hat sich mit einem mosaik aus Weinen und Weingütern eine ganz individuelle identität geschaffen.
