Since 1924, CFNR – Compagnie Française de Navigation Rhénane – has been specialized in waterway transport on the Rhine basin. Over the years the group has been able to diversify its activities and cover the entire logistics chain – material handling, storage, shipping, freight forwarding, maritime transport, road transport – in bulk material as well as containers or heavy lift. The company's organizational logisitics, based primarily on its own fleet and charter service, has enabled it to earn the loyalty of its satisfied customers. CFNR now has subsidiaries all along the Rhine River, the Moselle River, the canals in northern Europe and most recently on the Danube. CFNR belongs to the Group ATIC Services, an industry leader in Europe whose operations span eleven countries, positioning CFNR as a key logistics partner.

services close to customers

The company is a proven global logistics partner in all domains associated with waterway transport. Its success is primarily due to its complete or partial acquisition of companies in material handling and logistics.

a commitment for the long term

CFNR has earned the loyalty of its customers by offering them expertise in managing integrated logistics chains.

The group relies on terminals near power plants or industrial sites that guarantee its clients “ water-rail-road ” intermodal connections. It provides them with land-based services in the ports as well as its own water-based services.

a longhistorY...

At its start, the CFNR was a simple barges manager on the Rhine. Over time, the company has become a modern fleet and has built partnerships with its customers over many decades.

Creation of CGNR (Compagnie Générale pour la Navigation Rhénane), semi-public company. Established to operate a major part of the German river fleet as well as storage and material handling facilities on the Rhine.

By order of General Charles De Gaulle, Creation of CNFR (Communauté de Navigation Française Rhénane) to regroup CGNR and 9 privately owned shipping companies. CNFR is responsible for all vessels on the French Rhine.

CNFR becomes CFNR (Compagnie Française de Navigation Rhénane) with the creation of its own fleet, affiliated with the fleet of the members of the grouping. During the 70s and 80s, CFNR diversifies its scope through acquisitions or in holding shares in companies active in waterway transport in the logistics chain.

CFNR is the first waterway transport company to offer container waterway transport between Strasbourg and Antwerp/Rotterdam.

Creation of PENTA, association of five companies in the container sector to pool carrying capacity between the upper Rhine and the ARA zone ports. The association includes DANSER, DANSER Suisse, RHENUS, SWISS Terminal and CFNR.

Privatization of CFNR which becomes a subsidiary of Group ATIC Services SA (Paris).

Acquisition of DHUG (Dillinger Hafen – Umschlagsgesellschaft mbH), handling and forwarding company on the Saar River, Germany.

Creation of TFMN (Transport fluvial des matériaux du Nord) in Loos, France.

The group acquires a 40% share of SOMEF, then a 70% share.

Inauguration of new container ship: the “Alsace-Hollande” convoy with a 3,220 ton capacity or 348 containers that ensures connections between ports in the ARA zone and the Upper Rhine.

Buyout of SMET and Brussels Shipping CY. Thus, CFNR develops its maritime, river, rail and road activities in the port of Brussels.

Opening of a new agency in Lille, initially focused on container transport, expanded to include heavy transport for its customers in the north of France.

Launch of three new state-of-the-art convoys. Amesha , Ger Jan and Fleur .

Creation of CFND, la Compagnie Française de Navigation Danubienne in Belgrade, Serbia.

DESCHIETER (material handling and transport company in Ghlin-Mons, Belgium) joins the CFNR group.
