Firewall: The Israel Legitimacy Hackathon
Selected Projects
Logic of Projects: The Content Axis and the Architecture Axis
The projects that will be developed at the Israel Legitimacy Hackathon have been
designed and selected on the basis of challenges articulated by individuals,
organizations, and communities around the world.
The Content Axis
The Content Axis categorizes projects on the basis of the needs they address:
1. Mapping the global and Internet landscapes of the delegitimization
campaign. Projects in this category will help to paint a macro-picture that
depicts the growth patterns and evolution of the delegitimization campaign.
2. Strengthening Our Networks by providing tools for strengthening and
expanding the network.
3. The Arab World projects focus on better understanding and influencing the
Arab world as related to Israel's delegitimization.
4. Infrastructure projects will create the building blocks of all the efforts,
focused on designing data collection, storage, and other technical programs.
The Architecture Axis
The Architecture Axis categorizes projects on the basis of their role in terms of
robust software design. Work along the logic will guide the continued
development and sustainability of the projects after the hackathon.
1. Tier 1: The Data Layer – The most basic level that includes projects focused
on data collection, storage, security, and shared access Application
Programming Interfaces (APIs) – a set of routines, protocols, and tools for
building software applications. These are the technical building blocks of the
other layers.
2. Tier 2: The Logic Layer – Built upon the data that is collected and stored by
Tier 1. These projects analyze the collected data, for example by ranking the
strength of a conversation or cross-referencing online identities.
3. Tier 3: The User Layer – Takes analyzed data from Tier 2 and communicates
the content by making it available and accessible to end users. These
projects include mailing lists, forums, infographics, and maps.
List of Projects
Mapping the Networks
1. Discourse Heat Map
Producing a 'Richter scale' through the use of Big Data analysis to illustrate both
the isolated hot spots, and where delegitimization is geographically spreading. (A
Tier 3 project.) Deliverable: An online, constantly updated map showing currently
active discourse centers. A decision-making tool will help determine if, where, and
how to intervene.
2. Apptivist
An app to take and upload pictures/videos to a heat map and potentially create an
additional qualitative layer to the heat map. Enables the documentation of
delegitimizing incidents. (A Tier 1 project.)
3. Source Material
Maps and charts on a timeline the posts and information of multiple sources that
are publishing delegitimization content online. (A Tier 2 project). Deliverable: A
visual timeline that shows the chronology of the spread of anti-Israel memes and
other content.
4. Rhetoritracker
Tracks the language of familiar content sites through linguistic and database
analysis in order to alert the pro-Israel community of shifts in language that would
point to a spike in delegitimization. (A Tier 2 project). Deliverable: Regular/on
demand reports (daily email for example). Alerts on specific events (i.e. change in
language and appearance of new terms or memes).
Strengthening our Network
5. Home Space
Creates a web site or a private social network where groups and individuals can
converge and exchange their knowledge about the best ways to deal with
delegitimization. (A Tier 2 project.) Deliverable: A protected Web site that will
connect people to people and to collected data. Results of other projects can feed
into this one as well.
6. Media Assess
Tracks the real-time effect of articles coming from within the pro-Israel community
in order to create empiric guidelines for replication. (A Tier 2 project.) Deliverable:
Empirically tested guidelines for creating a high impact artifact.
7. Virtual 'war rooms'
Manages a multi-disciplinary response team based on the IDC and others' 'war
rooms.' (A Tier 3 project.) Deliverable: Application/Web interface and methodology
for operating rapid response interventions.
The Arab World
Focuses on better understanding and influencing the Arab world as related to Israel's
delegitimization.
8. Map the Casbah
Maps and analyzes different terms in the context of Arab public opinion. (A Tier 2
project.) Deliverable: Research tools to enable better understanding of Arab social
networks/online presence in the context of sentiment towards Israel.
9. Hearts and Minds
Write, direct, and produce a media product that will impact the Arab world. (A Tier
3 project.) Deliverable: Video or Web site that can appeal to the Arab street and
affect public opinion related to Israel.
Infrastructure
These projects will create the building blocks of all the efforts, focused on designing data
collection, storage, and other technical programs.
10. Common authentication API
Provides a common Application Programming Interface for limiting access to
projects based on a permissions system and a shared list of members. For
programmers - an authentication mechanism with a unified identity for all
legitimation related applications. (A Tier 1 project.)
11. Common DAL
Provides an interface for storing and searching data by applications for
programmers - a hosted and managed database with commonly required objects,
security and API taken care of. (A Tier 1 project.)
12. Connector Interface
Provides a standard software interface for collection tools from various open and
partially open sources. For programmers - a convertor design pattern
implementation project to enable streaming data to the common DAL from all
sources. (A Tier 1 project.)
