Dear Sisters, April 2013
It is with great pleasure that I announce the Daughters of Columbus Lodge 1666, 80th Annual Scholarship & Retirees Dinner Dance. This year on Saturday April 13, 2013 we will be honoring nine retirees and two scholarship recipients.
This Years Retirees are…
Louise Battaglini, Carol Daglio, Patricia Del Santo, Julia Dinga (Posthumously), Lucy Julian, Sr. Lorraine Mangini, Jackie Sammon, Theresa Spinelli and Loretta Testani.
All of these women have been members for 20(+) years and reached retirement age. I personally would like to thank them for their dedication to our lodge; they are truly women dedicated to our Italian heritage.
Scholarship recipients will be announced at the dinner dance, and they will be outstanding students for sure. These students will most certainly carry on our traditions. Thank you Pat Hogeboom, Chairperson and your committee for working on this.
Congratulations to all of you, we are truly blessed to have you.
I would also like to thank the Officers and members, for their commitment and hard work this past year; I know you will continue in the New Year. If you have a new idea for fundraisers please give me a call, we are always looking for new ways to raise money for our charities.

President’s CornerDear Brothers,
This is the first newsletter for 2013 that begins the new term for the officers and board for the Lodge. I want to thank the former board for all of their support and hard work and welcome the new officers and board for the 2013-2015 term.I know we all feel that it is an honor and privilege to serve this Lodge and our Brothers to make this the best Lodge in NYS. We always appreciate your suggestions and ideas to make this a great place to be a part of and most importantly your involvement.
The State convention is coming up at the end of May where we will be honoring our out-going President Tom Lupo and welcoming our new President Joe Rondinelli.
The 2013 calendar year is shaping up as we discuss a bigger and better Summer BBQ series, resurrecting the Golf Tourney, getting a head start on the Clambake and a number of other activities.
Also... It is time to start forming committees and planning for our 100th Anniversary. June 2015 is closer then we all realize and we need to insure we are ready to celebrate this momentous occasion with our membership and community. I expect many of our brothers will be called on to support and plan this event.
Thank you brothers for allowing me a second and final term as your President . It is not an honor I take lightly... Let’s make it an exciting 2 years together.
Fraternally yours, David

Here it is March already, can’t believe it’s been four months ago, we were just saying Happy New Year to 2013. Wow what a four months it has been in this year. Never, and I mean NEVER have I seen a winter like this in my 79 years on this earth. Temperatures varying all over the country, snow in places they never get it, fires in the Midwest, tornadoes, etc, etc. It’s like nothing we have ever seen before. Crazy you say, but as some elderly Italian Ladies at our church said, “He better be good to us this winter, for what happened to our area in the summer (the floods of 2011). I won’t touch that line with a ten foot pole, but I won’t disagree with them. I just hope I’ll be able to grow my garden in June, rather than shoveling some “white stuff”. But I’ll take it one day at a time, and what ever comes I’ll be happy.
March is a great month in the fact that the Lenten period is over and Easter is upon us. Most Christians in the world celebrate “Lent”, a time of fasting, praying and giving up things they enjoy to prepare them for the Easter holiday. I must honestly tell you that for the last forty years I have not broken a Lenten fast. Every year I give up the same three things, and as God is my witness, I have kept my fast for all the Lenten periods since 1972. I give up the following:
• SkeetShooting• BigGamehunting• Watermelon
Sounds silly doesn’t, but let me explain:
• Haven’tfireagunsinceIlefttheNavy• NeverhavebeenonaSafari• HaveyoutriedtogetWatermeloninthetriplecitiesareaduring
the winter time?
I gave these items up in 1972 when I heard a priest (Father Montelone) explain what Lent was really all about. He gave up the exact same things, every year of his life, but with these sacrifices he also was going to:
* Try to be nicer to people each day.* Visit the local nursing home more often.* Contact his family more often.* Help and go visit his neighbors.* Smile and say hello to people you meet, stranger and friend.* Volunteering at various organizations.*Talk to the Man upstairs, a little more, Thanking Him for all that he
has received.
He felt this was the true meaning of the Lenten Season, rather than trying to lose ten pounds by not eating candy, because your class reunion was coming up in May. Giving up smoking or not drinking coffee, but it made you unbearable to live with cause you were screaming and yelling to everyone in the family, because you just needed that smoke or cup of coffee to settle you down.
I really was enraptured by his speech, and ever since that day, my Lenten Fasts stay the same and I try to be a little nicer to my fellow

man during this time frame and I hope it rubs off for the entire year. I think it’s working, because I just paid my Federal Income Tax with a smile and a “Thank You Note” to the Federal Government for this great country which I live in. Wow, who would have believed it!! I had a dream the other night that a Genie came to me and said she would grant me one wish. I said,” I would like to live forever’. “Sorry”, said the Genie, “I’m not allowed to grant that particular wish.” “Fine”, I said,” Then I want to die the day after Congress gets there heads on straight.”
“Happy Easter” to all my Brothers and Sisters and there families. Thank You to all who volunteer at the club, because it is you guys and gals who make it happen… Have a Great Holiday.
Lou

I received a letter from one of my classmates telling me of her younger sister’s passing. She was in perfect health, with no health concerns, no medications and she just returned from a 2 month vacation in Spain visiting her son and his family. She had a great time, came home, went to bed and never woke up! At her funeral, the Priest gave a stirring “homily”, stating that everyone over the age of reason should join the Boy Scouts. My classmate was stunned, when the Priest said that. He explained, the motto of the Boy Scouts is “Be Prepared”. As we never know when our time on Earth will be up, we should all Be Prepared to answer for our actions to our Maker, but we should Be Prepared to leave our loved ones in less grief, by explaining our wishes and leaving a clear understanding of what you want done with your earthly possessions.
In our teens and twenty’s we have no fear, except if we are in the front lines fighting. As we get older we worry a little, but “Hey”, my parents lived into their 70’s and 80’s, so I still have time. When we finally hit 50, let’s think about it. Maybe we should go see a lawyer to see who would take care of the kids, if something should happen. At 60 maybe I should look for a burial plot, but I still have time. As time has a way of moving quickly, and I made it through the 70’s and now I begin my 80’s, I hope I’m prepared, as I hope I crossed all my t’s and dotted all my i’s and my family will know what I want and where everything is. Life goes by quickly, so, do what you can today, and with that in mind I’m going to read and reread a column written by Regina Brett, a 90 year old reporter and the lessons life taught her to be prepared.
Here they are:
1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short – enjoy it.
4. Your job won’t take care of you when you’re sick. Your friends and family will.
5. Don’t buy stuff you don’t need.
6. You don’t have to win every argument. Stay true to yourself.

7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.
8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for things that matter.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.
12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be secret, you shouldn’t be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of any eye but don’t worry: God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful. Clutter weighs you down in many ways.
18. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It’s never too late to be happy but it’s all up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use nice sheets, and wear fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words,” In five years, will this matter?”
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive but don’t forget.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
31. However good or bad a situation is; it will change.
32. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.
35. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it.
36. Growing old beats the alternative-dying young.
37. Don’t cripple your children by making things easy for them.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside everyday. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we threw all our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. Accept what you already have, not what you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.
If you’re not a member of the Boy Scouts, think about it and live up to their motto- Be Prepared. Lou
