PROGRAM Pat Bongers, Rotary Club of Gravenhurst, visited with the Club to talk about “Rotary Wheels for Learning Cambodia”, a project led by their club with support from 10 other Rotary clubs including North Bay. While carrying out humanitarian work in Cambodia in 2009/2010, Rotarian Lisa McCoy from their club saw an opportunity to provided bicycles to children in the rural areas and was able to give out many bikes that year by appealing for donations. The Club then decided to establish a more formal program in 2010. The schools are far and few between, with many children having to walk up to 10 km one way – contending with the hot sun, snakes and landmines (still present from past atrocities) – to attend class. Two or three children will ride to school on ONE bike.

The team spends 3 weeks in Cambodia preparing and distributing bikes to needy children, as selected by their schools. To date, 1,333 bikes have been distributed, including 40 through donations from our Club.

Pat also talked about another project that is carried out on the day the kids receive their bikes – Dental Hygiene – that sees each child given a toothbrush and toothpaste and instructions on proper brushing techniques. Their 4th annual bicycle distribution trip is set for January 27th to February 17th, 2015. For more information and how to participate on a future trip - http://rotarywheelsforlearning.blogspot.ca.

HAPPY TOONIES

Paul Norris was happy about the arrival of his grandson named River a couple of day ago. Jeff Rogerson spent an excellent week in Halifax with his daughter Alex, along with his wife Linda. Alex is doing her

Masters at Mount St. Vincent. First time he has been further then Moncton. Brian Chute glad to be back from a great trip to Machu Piccu and the Galápagos Islands. Lots of pictures on his Facebook to share, but he needs more friends. Swimming with 15 600 lb. turtles and viewing the Inca ruins, was remarkable. “You have to wonder how people who have nothing are so happy. I have to bring my kids over there.” Craig Rodwell does like other sports, including golf, besides motor racing and is happy about the Ti-Cats

heading to Vancouver to the Grey Cup. Tom Tucker and his wife Rosanne are going to be graced with their 3rd grandchild in May and are very happy. Yvonne Weir commented that Brian stole her thunder, as she was on the trip with him and had a great time too. Her 2nd happy toonie was for her mom, now 90, who had a knee replacement and has been through a lot over the last number of years. She is now home, pain-free and driving again. Trudy Lang thanked those who attended her mom’s visitation and funeral and provided condolences. Her mother, one of the most selfless people on earth, always said ‘when a door closes a window opens’. Trudy thanked her sponsor Brett Tucker, who gave her insight in to what more there is to Rotary. Although she has been around for 8 years, she had never crossed that path with so much to do with her mom and other commitments, and it is rather ironic the timing of all this, that her mother has passed and she has this time to give to the Rotary Family, that we have become. “I look forward to being a full member of Rotary!” Pat Bongers was happy to see an Exchange Student at our meeting today. His Gravenhurst Club really misses participating in the program. They gave it up about 5 years ago, due to the challenges of getting host families. We are so lucky to have a student.
