LocSec Lowdown August 2017 Hello, fellow Plains & Peaks Mensa Members! Congratulaons to all of us! We’ve won an American Mensa Sapphire Award for 2016- 2017! The award levels (Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby, and Diamond) are based on points earned for a variety of acvies and accom- plishments, earned by the group as a whole, including parcipaon in Mind Games ® , Cul- tureQuest ® , Mensa Tesng Day, and Leader- ship Development Workshops. For a local group, this also indicates that we have a varie- ty of events, good communicaon with our members, publish our newsleers/events/etc. in a mely manner and manage our finances! Hurrah!! Huge “Thank You” to our officers and members who made this happen! Well, here’s the latest from the Halby house- hold! Due to some eye issues (dry eyes, possi- ble allergies, and a couple of other factors), I’ve been relegated back to wearing glasses for at least a week. Those of you who know me know I’m blind as a bat without correcve lenses! Unfortunately, my glasses are over 20 years old and the prescripon is not what it should be, so here I am - squinng at the com- puter monitor – and it’s taking a toll on my paence! I hate my glasses and have been wearing contact lenses for almost 50 years, so this transion back to glasses, even for a week, is really tough. Driving, golf, watching TV - I’m really having to concentrate! Here’s my personal plea to all of you – send good thoughts for my eyes to heal up quickly so I can get back to normal!! Thanks! Our Mensa group had a busy, busy July – all the usual events plus Movie Night and a hike in the Ausn Bluffs Open Space! (Photos are on our Facebook page!) Sll coming up as I (painfully) type this up – Mountain Munchies: our annual invasion of RC and Connie’s house outside of Florissant. It’s a fun way to spend an aſternoon, get to know some of our local group, enjoy some good food and the magnifi- cent views! Why not come on up and join us? Coming up in August, the usual events, includ- ing GITBP, Caffeine Conundrum (which is turn- ing out to be very popular!), a hike on the Seven Bridges Trail, Hangin’ with the Lairds (a real laid-back aſternoon event), and USS at Juniper Valley Ranch! And, looking even further ahead, in Septem- ber – our annual Cripple Creek Mini-RG! We’re planning it for the 9 th of September – which is the same weekend as the Cruise Above the Clouds Car Show, which is a gather- ing of custom and collector cars, trucks, and motorcycles. The show actually starts in Woodland Park, with a poker run to Cripple Creek, where the cars are then displayed along the main street of the town! In addion to being able to view all those spectacular cars, we’ll be going to the play at the Bue and dining at one of Cripple Creek’s beer restaurants (hopefully the Steakhouse at Bronco Billy’s). And, for the duffers in our group, we’ll be golfing at Shining Mountain the day aſter the Mini-RG. Let me know if you’d like to join us for a round!! Heartland Region 7

Many years ago I drove home to Chicago from school in New Jersey. I

had a passenger, a grad student from Africa. About half-past Ohio he

started shaking his head. “So big,” he said, “so big.” The sheer extent

of our country was getting to him.

I had a similar experience this month while on my 5,000-mile round

trip from here in Denver down to the Annual Gathering near Miami

FL. Our Heartland Region is huge, almost 600,000 square miles, 1200

miles from the NW corner of Wyoming Mountain Mensa to the SE

edge of Missouri Ozarks Mensa.

The good part of all that driving was that it let me meet so many

Heartland Mensans, whether on home grounds (Kansas City outward

bound, Omaha on the way back) or at the AG. Without exception,

they were folks who’d enriched their lives and had fun by getting in-

volved with the organization.

You can, too, if you’re not already getting full benefit from your mem-

bership. You’ve taken the hardest step – you’ve qualified and joined

up. What’s left is to show up. Keep an eye on this group’s calendar

and drop in to an event or two. Join in on the conversation. Enjoy.

But in my experience the big returns come from volunteering. Men-

sans like personal growth. I can testify that my Mensa experience has

broadened my horizons and called forth new skills.

“But how can I get started on that? Nobody knows me and what I like

to do. I don’t know what I’ll be committing to if I volunteer.” I’m glad

you asked. Get thee to the Internet and go to this link: https://

www.surveymonkey.com/r/9MY7N22. It’s an 8-question survey

about what you like to do, how far you can travel, stuff like that. Your

LocSec (and no-one else) will get your answers. When they see a

volunteer opportunity that fits you, they’ll get in touch. Enjoy.

JULY TRIVIAL PURSUITS! Six Mensans showed up at the ol' Buffalo waller for Trivial Pursuits. The place was crowded and game players were dear but the Mensans made a good showing. Except for a trick question in the Final Showdown--some nonsense about a Van Gogh painting--they might have swept the field. Al won the Warmup Round, Tony won Countdown and Category rounds, Al won the Lightning Round, and Tony won the Pyramid round. Then came that pesky question which all of the Mensans missed and some rascal named Khan snuck the game. Tony was 2nd, Jonathan 3d, Sarah was 7th, Al 8th, Mark 9th, and Susan 10th, so they took six of the top ten spots, but it just wasn't enough for that night. JULY MINI-GOLF RESULTS: Seven of us braved the weather and did at least 9 holes before the rain shut us out! Dave, Mark, and Sandy

were on one team, and J, Susan, Jim and Louise formed another team. After about 5 holes, the rain started and about the 9th or 10th, we were in a downpour! So, we hunkered down under the awning, ate some candy, and BS’d for a while! So, even though we may not have com-

pleted the full 18 holes, we sure had a fun time! Thanks for coming out, folks! HELP WANTED! Do you have a Media or Publicity background? May-be that’s something you’d like to try? If so, consider helping Plains & Peaks Mensa with Admissions Testing publicity! We’re looking to in-crease our testing numbers and really need a hand with the publicity – ideas, contacts, someone to take this particular bull by the horns and wrestle around with it! And, bonus – this would look good on your resume or annual job appraisal! If you’d be interested in volun-teering to be our Publicity person, contact Sandy at [email protected]! JOIN PLAINS & PEAKS MENSA ON FACEBOOK! See photos of recent activities and meetings and get to know some of your fellow Mensans via this popular social site! It’s a “closed” group so you have to ask to join. Search FB for “Plains & Peaks Mensa.” BLOGS AND WEBSITES: If you have a blog or website that you think might interest other Mensans, send the link to Betsy at [email protected] so she can put it here. E-MAIL AND ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER: If you’re receiving this via “snail mail,” consider changing your preferences to electronic news-letter and correspondence. It’s easy! Go to the American Mensa web-site or contact American Mensa to change your preferences! GET PUBLISHED! If you’d like to contribute to the PlainsPeaking newsletter, submit your article, poem, photo, puzzle, whatever to Betsy at [email protected]. If you have an announcement or news item, please forward it to PlainsPeaking Editor Betsy Ogan ([email protected]) for inclusion in PlainsPeaking! And, don’t forget, you can advertise your business in PlainsPeaking. The current rates are: business card size $6, quarter page $10, half page $25, and full page $50.

CATCHING UP ON BURGERQUEST Your regular host was at the AG in Florida for the July BQ, and Scott M was kind enough to stand in. Thanks, Scott; good job! Five Plains & Peaks Burger Judges attended the July event at Bingo Burger with Scott (Brian, JJ, Mike, Sandy, and Wayne), and provided the following scores: Hamburger and Toppings 5.0 Side dishes 3.5 Value for price 3.5 Service 3.0 Atmosphere 2.0 Cleanliness 3.0 Comments were: “Very messy burger, so you know it had to be sooooo good”, “Very, Very Noisy Place”, “This place needs acoustic tiles!”, “TOO NOISY”, “too noisy!!”, ”Too Noisy!”, “Restaurant - good; clientele – poor”, “noisy.” (Does anyone detect a common theme?) Last month’s newsletter left out the usual drivel – I mean write-up – about the previous month’s BQ, which occurred at Johnny’s Navajo Hogan on June 11th. For the sake of completeness (if anyone keeps track of where we’ve gone and what our experiences were), here are the results for that get-together: BurgerQuest at Johnny’s Navajo Hogan: Plains and Peaks Mensans have been on a quest to discover the best burger joint in the Colorado Springs for over three and a half years! In that time, Johnny’s Navajo Hogan has been mentioned a number of times, but we’ve never visit-ed it to try their burgers. In June, we corrected that shortcoming. And it was about time. The very helpful staff, when asked if we could get a reservation for 12, told us that they would reserve 15, just to be sure we had enough seats. Good thing, because Al, Brian, Chris, Doug, George, Henry, Janet, K.C., Linda, Robin, Scott, Sean, Srikant, and Will showed up, along with a few of Srikant’s kids. That’s 14 plus, and we squeezed them in. Incidentally, Will was a first-timer for BurgerQuest. Hamburger and Toppings 4.0 Side dishes 4.0 Service 4.0 Value for price 3.5 Cleanliness 4.0 Atmosphere 3.5 Comments: “Burger – texture good, cooked to order. Toppings – good. Overall, good dining experience.”, “Carne Asada – salty, good flavor.”, “Disappointing that they had no bread on a bun not white.”, “Sweet Potato Fries – 5 stars. One of our favorite places.”, “Erica did a good job waiting on our big group.” “Medium burger was closer to well done, and a little salty. Sweet potato fries sauce (caramel marsh-mallow) was sweet.”, “Don’t order the fish tacos.” Your usual host, freshly returned from his 28th (in a row!) AG, will return to preside over the Quest in August, which will be at Wyatt’s Pub & Grill, 806 Village Center Dr., CoS 80919, (719) 598-4100, just a few doors down from the Rockrimmon Library (which is, unfortunate-ly, closed on Sunday). Their website (http://wyattspub.com/bak-index.html has a menu with a description of their burgers. There’s a link “About Wyatt’s” that includes the quote “The kind of place that you know the food will be great, you can have a beer or two or a glass of wine and feel comfortable bringing your kids or your grandpar-ents.” True? Your host doesn’t know, but let’s find out. RSVP to George by 6:00 pm Saturday August 12th, and the earlier the better. This establishment WILL take reservations, and we’ll need to give them some notice. If you forget to RSVP please attend anyway. Be sure to bring your ankle-biters, BurgerQuest is a kid-friendly event.

Goin’ Up To Cripple Creek Okay, Buckaroos and Buckarettes, it’s time to Go Up to Cripple Creek and have a little fun! Join us for a day-long outing to Cripple Creek (of course, you can stay longer if you'd like)! Start your Cripple Creek adventure any time you'd like, but we'll get together at the Butte Theater at 1 p.m. to take in “The Nerd.” An aspiring architect in Terre Haute, IN. Willum Cub-bert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Stead-man, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. Willum has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, ‘you will have somebody who will do anything for you’. Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his 34th birthday party. His delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless nerd, a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence & even less tact. After Willum’s birthday, Rick stays becoming the house guest from Hades with his continued presence leading from one hilar-ious incident to another until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence, which, happily, is staved off by the surprising twist ending of the play. “The Nerd” was written by Larry Shue who also wrote the last year’s hit production ‘The Foreigner’. Tickets are $20. Let Al know how many you want and he'll place the order ([email protected], 291-8749). Be advised, if you make reserva-tions, you will have to pay Al for the tickets, even if you cannot attend. Special events include the Cruise Above the Clouds Car Show featur-ing vintage, custom and classic cars and motorcycles, in addition to the usual "Make your own plans” events include the 2 Mile High Club’s Aspen Tours (the colors should be good around this time of year!), the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, the Crip-ple District Museum (excellent small museum), the Cripple Creek Jail Museum, the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, the Old Homestead House Museum, as well as the Victor Lowell Museum, the Victor Gold Camp Ag and Mining Museum just a few scenic miles away in the town of Victor (which is like Cripple Creek used to be before the casinos!) and more! At 6 p.m. we'll gather at Bronco Billy's for a dinner. Let Al know by September 1st if you're coming! Reservations are hard to get and even that early we may have to move to an alternate location. And for the duffers in the group, we plan on an early tee time at Shin-ing Mountain on Sunday, the 10th.!

Tuesday, August 15th, 6:00pm: Trivial Pursuits. We’re playing Showdown, a 6-stage trivia contest featuring a wide

variety of topics, at Buffalo Wild Wings, 2905 Geyser Drive (at I-25 and Lake, next to Outback Steaks and Tinseltown) – they claim to have 45 players and Wi-Fi so everybody should be able to play! We’re drink-ing some adult beverages (if you want to) and noshing on wings and other Buffalo Wild Wings specialty foods like burgers and sandwiches! The actual game starts at 6:30pm, but if you want a game player you probably should get there earlier! Call or e-mail Al (719-465-3747, [email protected]) to let him know you’ll be there! Tuesday, August 15th, 8pm: RSVP for USS. at Juniper Valley Ranch on the 26th! See details below. Sunday, August 20th, 9am: Seven Bridges Mensa Hike! For our Au-gust hike, we’ll be hitting Seven Bridges, a popular trail in the Chey-enne Canyon. The trail follows the North Cheyenne Creek and is named after, you guessed it, the seven bridges that cross it along the way. It's an easy trail, approximately 3.2 miles total (about 1.6 miles in, turn around and back out)! At the last bridge, there’s a place to soak our feet before hiking back. Directions: Coming south on I-25 take exit 140, go south on Tejon and turn onto Cheyenne Blvd, which turns into Cheyenne Canyon Road (at Evans). Continue on Cheyenne Canyon Road past Helen Hunt Falls; the road will take a sharp right and turn into Canonwood Road. At the intersection of Canonwood and Gold Camp, there’s a parking area. We’ll meet at the parking lot at Sandy’s car – she has a red Ford Explorer (with the gold Mensa logo on the back) and hit the trail promptly at 9am, so you might want to arrive a few minutes early to get parked, get your hat/water/etc ready and find the group! Be sure to wear your hiking shoes and bring sun block and water, too! After the hike, if we want, there are several places nearby to go for late breakfast/early lunch! Sunday, August 20th, 2:30-ish until whenever: Hangin’ with the Lairds! It’s the height of Summer! Come on over after and hang with the Lairds! Enjoy snacks, cold drinks of all kinds, and relax on the deck or in the shade of the old apple tree. Check out the how the garden is doing and enjoy a very relaxing afternoon! Kids are wel-come. The Lairds live at 2990 Rhapsody Dr., CoS, 80920 Near Union and Briargate Blvd. (not Briargate Parkway) and the phone is: (719) 928-7997. Saturday, August 26th, 6pm: Ultimate Saturday Supper at Juniper Valley Ranch! Get ready for some of the best skillet fried chicken or baked ham in the state as we venture south down Highway 115 to Juniper Valley Ranch Restaurant – in their 66th season. The chicken is $19.50 and the ham is $20.50 and is served family style! It includes an appetizer (curry consume or cherry cider), cole slaw, riced potatoes with cream gravy, okra casserole [Note from Sandy – the okra is excellent! Worth the trip alone!!], and a homemade biscuit with apple butter. For desert, you can choose a chocolate or butterscotch sundae, or a peppermint stick ice cream. This is a popular dining location so we’ll need solid (and early) reservations for this! Call or e-mail Al (465-3747, [email protected]) by August 15th to get a place at the table. Juniper

Tuesday, August 1st, 8pm: RSVP for ExComm Meeting and Dinner. Give Sandy a call at 719-528-5483 or e-mail [email protected] to reserve a seat at Thursday’s ExComm Meeting and Dinner. Thursday, August 3rd, 6:30pm: ExComm Meeting and Dinner. Let’s check out 503W, which is located at, you guessed it, 503 West Colora-do! Their menu is eclectic, featuring street food, bowls, and burgers! We need reservations for this one, so let Sandy know by Tuesday, August 1st, if you’ll be there ([email protected] or call 719-528-5483). For new Mensans, the ExComm Meeting is our business meeting and takes about two minutes to conduct. All members and guests are welcome at this event! Friday, August 4th, 5pm: Give In To Beer Pressure. We’re heading

back to Cerberus! August is usually nice and warm so we can enjoy their wonderful patio – and the food isn’t bad either! And, with a name like Cerberus, as you’d expect, it’s “Dog friendly" on the deck and pa-tio. (Dogs must be on a leash and non-aggressive.) Cerberus Brewing is located at 702 W Colorado Ave.

Remember, if you know of a good brew-pub or happy hour bar in the local area that we have missed, please let Sean know. He can be reached by email: [email protected], or by cell phone: (719) 651-6706. Saturday, August 5th, 10am: Caffeine Conundrum! In August, we’ll be visiting Story Coffee (120 East Bijou)! It’s small and quaint, with limited seating outside, but makes great coffee! Probably the reason for such great coffee is that the owners spent a full year traveling over 30,000 miles, visiting 45 states and over 200 coffee shops in order to ensure they would do it right when they set up their own coffee shop here in Colorado Springs! Advance Notice: Friday, September 1st, 5pm: Give In To Beer Pres-sure! In September, we’re revisiting Cogstone! Sean’s highly com-plex, secret algorithm (developed exclusively by Sean) has us circling back to some of the newer breweries now that they have become a little more established. Cogstone is located at 3858 Village Seven Road, near N. Carefree and Academy (another brewery in the NE part of town!) Let’s see how Cogstone is working out! Remember, if you know of a good brew-pub or happy hour bar in the local area that we have missed, please let Sean know. He can be reached by email: [email protected], or by cell phone: (719) 651-6706.

Advance Notice: Tuesday, September 5th, 6:30 pm: ExComm Meeting and Dinner! Let’s visit Oscar’s, 333 South Tejon, for some authentic Cajon food along with their special drinks! For new Men-sans, the ExComm Meeting is our business meeting and takes about two minutes to conduct. All members and guests are welcome at this event! Advance Notice: Saturday, September 9th, Cripple Creek Mini-RG! See the article on Page 5 for details!
