Since 1836 Texas has seen its share of changes, but a free public education has long been the heart of Texas. From 1840 when the first public school law was enacted and 17.712 acres were set aside in each county for public schools to the 1900s where there were 526 districts. Public schools have been central to each community. Today there are 1,034 school dis-tricts in Texas! Texas Public Schools Week was established in

1950 by the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas to "show visible support of public education." While the celebration traditionally takes place during the first full week in March each year, to coincide with the March 2, 1836 anniversary of the Texas Declaration of Independence, some dis-tricts have chosen to cele-brate later in March to avoid conflicts with TAKS testing. This year, the first week of March falls on

February 28-March 4, 2011. At the February 27, 2012 School Board meeting the Board adopted a Resolu-tion to designate March 19-23, 2012 as Texas Public School’s Week.

Did You Know...

In the spring of 2011, Lockhart High School was selected, through a competitive grant proc-ess, for a five-year Ad-vanced Placement Train-ing & Initiative Program (APTIP) grant. This AP-TIP grant ($386,750) will fund implementation of the nationally recognized and highly successful Advanced Placement Training & Initiative Pro-gram (APTIP), a program that dramatically in-creases U.S. student achievement in Advanced Placement math and sci-ence courses. Securing an APTIP grant is simply one of the ways that the Lockhart ISD helps stu-dents become successful and have opportunities that they might not other-wise have.
