If you are looking for a really historie property at a reasonable priee, Château de la Cressonnière is a luxurious 14th-century castle nestling in the heart of rural Vendée. It is evocative of a bygone era and provides the ideal opportunity to escape the rat race but without forsaking any of the modern conveniences we have all come to regard as necessary. While the history of la Cressonnière can be traced back to 1360, the first castle on the site was probably erected at the end of the 14th century by the Cresson family. The site lent itself to the construction of such an edifiee due to its proximity to the old routes linking north to south, and east to west, as well as the plentiful source of clean water. The château building was originally started in the 14th century and then substantially updated in the 16th century, being finished in 1566. The structure, which is representative of his personality, evokes feelings of both force and elegance, balance, severity, pure beauty and austerity. "Vertu extainct le vice" (Virtue quells vice), is beautifully engraved in the title block stone over the gateway arch, and ensures that no one who crosses the château's threshold could ignore the owner's deeply ethical views. TUMBLING DOWN Unfortunately, one of the subsequent owners was convicted of murdering the royal prosecutor of Fontenay-le-Comte, and a Poitiers court passed sentence that his properties be demolished. ln accordance with the verdictpart ofla Cressonnière was Theimposing entrance ta Château de la Cressonnière destroyed in the late 16th century. The final aristocratie owner of la Cressonnière died of poverty in the Montreuil-Bellay prisons in the 19th century, and thereafter the property was sold as a national estate. Today, the Château de la Cressonnière, whieh has a €895,000 priee tag, is a luxuriously restored 14th-century building, within easily managed, recently landscaped gardens of 6,393m 2 with an in-ground swimming pool. This stunning property oozes character, with magnificent stone spiral staircases and superb arched entrance, but it maintains a truly homely feel despite its historie links. Also in the courtyard are the old stables, inwhich a maison d'amis is currently underconstruction. Of a similar size to the otherbarn, this has been completely re-roofed andtiled, with new drainage added. This buildingis split into three parts, with the centralbuilding used as accommodation (could be agîte) while on the right-hand side there is agames room and on the left, the pool room/changing area.

The grounds of the château have been newlylandscaped with symmetrieal pathways laidwith white stone chips and wooden borders tathe lawns and trees. There us also a dry moatwith a weIl fed by a natural spring, and grassedlawns and a mix of mature trees. A new in-ground, concrete-lined, heated pool is situated

in the inner château grounds and is 12m longby 4m wide with pale Indian stone surroundand enclosed by fence and planting.

The château will be minimum maintenance -or as low as it can be for a building of this type- and is now fully renovated, with on/y themaison d'amis to be internally finished.
