    Location Design Sheet Explained

Page 1on page 1, I have included initial concept ideas for the type of setting that I

wanted to convey for my story. Using the reference I had produced earlier, I created images

of scenery and used a vibrant colour scheme to mimic the cartoon/fantasy style. Even

though I liked the design of the first image, I think that the colours are still abit too saturatedso I will look further at the colour schemes. In the next image, I began to experiment further

with colours for a scene that I had created for the boy. Again, I think the colours here are

    abit too saturated.

Page 2on page 2, I addressed what I had from before and instead looked at colours that

were slightly less saturated and perhaps abit more like pastel colours. The top image was a

lot more dull which I dont think really fits the mood of the story. The second image

however, I think is more appropriate with the theme and I will explore this further in later

    development.

    Page 3similarly to the 2nd

image on page 2, I looked at the colours and made them a bit

brighter in order to see how it looked. I liked this version as it looks a lot more fantasy and

cartoon. In the second image, I have included an image of a first concept idea of the main

room in my story. To begin with, I was going to include an idea of a riddle to be the puzzle

the boy has to solve, but I changed this later on.

Page 4on this page, I included the first design ideas I had for the place that the boy was

going to explore. To begin with, I thought that it would be interesting for the boy to go

through a labyrinth or a maze, although I have changed this now to a room in a castle. In the

second image, I created a sketch idea of a setting that could have been used for the opening

scene. Although, Im not sure whether to include this in the final thing.

Page 5 is the sketch from previous pages

Page 6on page 6, I have drawn an image of what the place that the boy lives in, looks

like. Looking at my reference, I thought that a cottage or stylised house would be best in

order to fit the theme of my story. I will use this image as a basis and elaborate further.

Page 7contains designs of what the main room of the castle was going to look like.

Overall, I liked the idea of steps, however I think that instead, I will just use a long corridor

with a sort of red carpet to make it appear more mysterious yet inviting?

Page 8continues with the main room concepts, looking at where the steps and puzzle

    wall would be positioned.

Page 9on page 9, I have included another design sketch of what the castle could possibly

look like. Drawing upon the research that I did of castles, I created this although, I think that

its a bit too small and doesnt come across as towering and scary. In the next design stages I

will make the castle look a lot bigger and intimidating.

Page 10on page 10, I have produced a sketch design of the initial design of the room.

Even though I like the design of the room, I still think that its not spacious enough and I

would like to give the room a lot more detail in terms of its design. Also, I will look at the

colour schemes that I will use.

Page 11I have included some of the colour studies that I did for the main room of the

castle and of the opening scene of the story. In the first two images, I painted the colour

scheme of the castle which is purples and blues and draw the basic shapes of the rooms.

Overall, I think that these colour schemes suit the mood of the castle as it is meant to be

mysterious. For the bottom image, I created a painted sketch of what the scenery could be

like for when the bird flies into the house. I like the design of the mountains as they fit with

the style Imgoing with although, I will need to look at what colour schemes I will use.

Page 12on this page I have included the designs of the room that the boy finds the dad

and also a colour study of what the scenery will look like outside of the castle. Firstly, in

terms of the first image, I wanted the room to look imposing as it is the room that the boy

discovers a mysterious figure wearing a mask and it is the room beyond the puzzle. If I had

to improve this, I would have perhaps made the room look a lot darker to set the mood. Inthe second image, I wanted to use dark blues to portray the time of day and purples too to

create the impression that this location with the castle is not to be approached. In particular,

I liked this colour scheme, especially the glow of the sky and ground as it reflects in the

    moonlight.

Page 13draws upon the design and colour palette of page 12. In the top image, I have

included the final design of the castle and the colour schemes that will complement the

setting. Overall, in comparison to earlier designs, I think that this castle looks a lot more

imposing and grand which is what I was going for. The second image is the design of the

    front door of the castle.

Page 14on page 14 I have included the designs of outside the house that leads to the

path of the castle and the main room scene where the boy receives the scroll. In terms of

the bottom image, I wanted to create quite a special room as the boy is using it for his

delivery service so it needs to be kept organised. Also, I have included the designs for the

map, poster and desk which was created from the references I have collected previously.

Next, I will need to look at the colour palette I will use.

Page 15draws upon the images in page 14 but contains the colour scheme that I will use

in the final story. Mainly, for this colour scheme, I related back to the research that I had

produced previously in terms of the fantasy/cartoon aspect, but also I wanted to link this

with the designs of the characters. For e.g. in this scene I have made the walls blue and the

rug green which reflects the boys outfit and the green (nature) theme of the puzzle later on.

Page 26in the top image, this is the side view of outside the castle as the boy is about to

approach the doors. If I was going to improve this image, I think that I would have made the

mountains a lot darker to fit the time of the scene. In the below image, this is a final colour

design of the first room that the boy enters. I like the lighting of this scene as it is dark, yet

there is slight light coming in from the windows which is subtle. Also, I wanted to make the

carpet detailed with an elaborate pattern so illustrate the grandness of this castle. I like the

Page 24on page 24, I have included the first colour palette idea I had for the first room

into the castle. Even though I liked the red colour scheme, I dont think this would have

suited the rest of the colour scheme I had for the castle. Also, I think thats thereds and

yellows look too much like a royal castle and that is not the impression I wanted to create. In

the second image, I have included another view of the main room of the castle, including

shading, colours and lighting ideas. I like the feeling of this room as its spacious and I think

that it would be great for the boy to explore.

Page 25in the first image, I have created another view of the room that the boy is in in

the opening scenes of the story. I included bulletins and notice boards as I thought this

would relate to his delivery service. The next stage for this will be to include the colour

schemes. In the below image, I have create a design of the room that the dad will be in as

the boy walks in. I incorporated the carpet for continuity and also the wall design. I thought

that the wall torches would be a nice touch too to illuminate his shadow and reflect off the

features of his mask. Again, in order to make this room look more intimidating, I will make it

    darker to set the mood.

Page 26finally in these images I have included more colour shot of the main room in the

castle and the features that the boy will be interacting with, for e.g. the mask and puzzle

wall. In terms of improving these shots, perhaps I will add more of a glow or light to the

    mask as it is revealed.
