Hello and welcome to the first edition of 2012.I hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas and new year and are now ready for the start of a brand new year.

Last year was the birth year of our Sompting Magazine which we hope has started to bring us all together as a community.

Now that the Local Vocal is becoming more of a house hold name I would like to urge you all to start using it for what it was originally designed for and that is to have your say about our village, and also to promote local business to business trade as we all need to support each other.

We also all embraced the local football teams last year following the progress of the Marquis of Granby up the league tables not forgetting the introduction of Coaches corner we all have now learnt to rely on his invaluable advice!!! So if there any other local sports teams that would like us to tell the village about your sporting exploits please drop us a line and we can all follow your progress too

So please once again enjoy this month’s magazine and don’t forget to drop us a line with all of your ideas, views and opinions.

Special Measures – A disaster or an opportunity?

By this time, most local people will know that the Sir Robert Woodard Academy has been placed in ‘Special Measures’ as a result of poor academic results following the recent Ofsted inspection.

To place this in context, not everything in the report is bad, and recognition has been made in the same report of the huge improvements in pupil behaviour, attendance, and the way in which pupils contribute to the wider community. Additionally, the Academy is seen by children as a safe place to be, and safeguarding procedures are seen as good. Many other areas of the Academy are rated as satisfactory, including the effectiveness of partnerships in promoting learning and well-being and promoting equality of opportunity.

So where next? The new ‘Executive Principal’ is Colette Singleton, who comes to the school with a huge bank of experience in tackling schools in ‘Special Measures’. She has already indicated that she will be focussing immediately on improving the opportunities for all children at the school, especially those young people in the sixth form and years 10 and 11, who are either taking exams this year, or preparing to take them in 2013. She has nailed her flag well and truly to the mast, and not only demands the best from all the teaching staff, but also rightly expects all parents of young people at the Academy to play their part in supporting their respective young people during their learning experience. As a community we also need to support the Academy and help her to achieve her goals in raising the level of performance.

Among the changes already made is not only the departure of the previous Principle, but also the dissolution of the governing body. Those people with an understanding of the role of Governors know that much of the legal responsibility for the management and performance of schools, and the requirement to ‘challenge’ the school performance rests with Governors, all of whom are volunteers. This is no different in the Sir Robert Woodward Academy. As your local District and County Councillor, I was approached to see if I would play a part in the new structure and become part of the new Governing Body, despite the fact that I am already Chair of Governors at Herons Dale Special School. After some consideration, I agreed to become a Governor at the Academy for a number of reasons. Firstly, I know the local community intimately, and can bring local knowledge to bear on any issue that arises. Secondly I was elected to represent the views of local people, and what better way can I do that, than try and give all our local young people the best educational opportunity that we can. Lastly, having had experience as a governor elsewhere in both secondary and primary settings, I feel I can bring something to the governing body which will help us challenge the new Principal and school performance.

I am sure you would agree with me that the new building at the Academy is not only stunning, but provides a huge opportunity as a springboard to take the school forward. The Woodard Foundation have already stated their ambition for the school is to take it through ‘good to outstanding’ and that ‘no expense will be spared’ in pursuit of that goal. My own ambition is to see the Sir Robert Woodard Academy become the first choice for parents in the area when considering schools for their children, and to reduce the 25% of local young people who currently go outside the district for their education.

Christmas FundraiserFor the last seven years the residents of Mill Road have been woken early (too early for some) on Christmas morning by the sounds of bells, and a cheerful’ Ho Ho Ho’. Every 25th of December Father Christmas juants up and down Mill Road, the Street and Ring Road spreading some early morning Christmas cheer. Father christmas has asked me to express his thanks to all the neighbours who come out and give him a cheerfull wave and for those kind offers of mince pies and sherry!

Later in the evening, Alex Martin took to the stage with his wonderful interpretat ion of “Advent 1955” by John Betjeman. The evening was attended by over forty p e o p l e , with M.P. Tim Loughton as the guest of honour. Tim is the patron of Electric Storm in Lancing, and a donation from the evenings proceeds went towards this project. Electric Storm aims to build a brand new facility for young people in the heart of Lancing. It will offer the young people of our community facilities and services that are used throughout the day, seven days a week. If you see any of their events advertised please do support them as the work they are doing will be a huge benefit to Lancing and the surrounding areas.

The Chairman and the committee would like to thank you all for your support and look forward to seeing you all at our summer fund raising event (Summer Lunch in the Garden).

At the end of the morning Father Christmas and his elves disappeared into Mill Cottage in Mill Road where his sleigh awaited.

Father Christmas appeared this year, with two of his elves, not just to eat his neighbour’s mince pies and drink their sherry, but also to deliver a special present to a little boy on his first British Christmas. Rocco McGlennon, aged 3, who lives in The Street and has had his last two Christmases in sunny Spain. Rocco may not have had his first white Christmas, but he had something better : meeting father Christmas himself.

This December, the beautiful dining room of Sompting Abbots’ School once again played host to the annual North Lancing and Coombes Conservative Christmas fundraiser. Guests enjoyed a wide selection of wine and cheese, a Christmas Raffle, and a variety of live entertainment. This included Annette Williamson playing the piano and Marion Peskett performing several flute solos. A special thank you must be given to Sarah Cockrill for her solo performance and for leading the communal Carol Singing.

Council News

Shoreham Beach BoardwalkAbout Herons DaleFor some time, Adur District Council have taken a live interests in improving facilities for disabled people within the district. So when the “Friends of Shoreham Beach” (FOSB) presented a petition of 750 signatures to Cabinet Member Councillor David Simmons in 2008, asking for improved access to the foreshore, this provided an ideal opportunity to provide a positive response, and real value for local people. The request was laid before the full Council, and it was agreed that £180,000 would be committed to enable the building of a substantial boardwalk to link to other major local developments, and enable access to people with mobility issues to enjoy the unique nature reserve which exists along the top of the beach.

As always, things move slowly at first, involving research as to the best and most durable surfaces used elsewhere and how best to structure the facility. During the interim, engagement was made with the Shoreham Beach Residents Association, who included it a number of times in their regular newsletter which went to every house on Shoreham Beach. Newspaper articles also published details, and the Cabinet Member spoke with local disabled people to ask for their perspective.

In 2010, we finally reached the point where work could start. Sadly, due to national financial constraints, the amount of money had been reduced from £180,000 to £60,000, and this resulted in the length of the boardwalk being reduced. Meetings on site with FOSB, a Doctor from nature conservation and local Councillors agreed that the walk should be positioned

between Ferry Road and Shingle Road. This would enable the existing concrete access paths to be renovated and extended, with turning and sitting areas at the sea end, as well as a link between the two path extensions through the existing ‘desire line’ used by dog walkers, and across the conservancy area. Using this ‘desire line’ enabled the link to be set in place while minimising disturbance to the important flora growing there.

This work commenced in the Autumn of 2010 and was completed in December. FOSB made arrangements for an official opening, and Alison Lapper, a well know local campaigner for disability rights, performed this opening on 27th December 2010 in front of 250 people, many of whom suffer from personal disabilities.

The new facility will eventually be linked to the town by the new footbridge being developed as well as the renovation of the Ferry Road area, thereby allowing easy access to those with mobility problems from the town centre to the foreshore.

Councillor David Simmons, Cabinet Member for Health and Well-Being said “Adur Council is pleased to have been able to work with the community to provide this valuable facility, and it a statement of our commitment to improve the choices of disabled people both now and in the future. I would also like to add my thanks to the Friends of Shoreham Beach who do such a great job in keeping it clean and preserving the nature reserve, for their tenacity in pursuing this boardwalk. It is pleasing to note that it is already being well-used, not only by older people, but also by pupils from some of our local schools, including Herons Dale, which provides education for 72 of our most severely disabled children to enable them to access areas previously denied to them.”

Councillor David SimmonsCabinet Member for Health and Well-BeingAdur District Council

Being physically active every day is important for the healthy growth and development of children. Babies should be encouraged to be active from birth. The Department of Health (DoH) recommends “Toddlers & Pre-schoolers should be physically active for at least three hours every day”.

In addition to the developmental benefits there is limited research suggesting “moderate exercise can strengthen the immune system, thereby reducing the risk of coughs and colds.” (DoH)

Being active outside in all weathers is advised for development and I’m definitely one to promote getting the wellies out to jump in puddles. In fact I think I enjoy this more than my children! However some activities are more dangerous in the wet weather. Climbing and ball activities although important for the growing toddler are not so easy or enjoyable in the cold British winter.

Motor development classes can be helpful for

Keeping children active this winter. providing a fun, safe (warm and dry environment!) for active play and to give new ideas for being active at home or in other environments.

PhysKids classes focus on a different aspect of development each week to cover elements of the early years foundation stage curriculum. All classes include time for children to freely explore our unique active equipment which is best for promoting confidence and learning through play and most importantly so the children have fun and enjoy being active from an early age.

Church of St Mary the Blessed Virgin, Sompting

Settlement of the area now covered by Sompting began in the Bronze Age and continued through the Iron Age and into the Roman era. By the 11th century, two distinct villages had formed: Sompting, based on the main east-west trackway from the cathedral city of Chichester to Brighton, and Cokeham to the south (later subdivided into Upper Cokeham and Lower Cokeham). At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 they were separate manors, but were both held on behalf of William de Braose, 1st Lord of Bramber.

There was a church on the site of the present building by the early 11th century, and some structural elements remain from that era. William de Braose held the advowson at the time of the Domesday survey, but in 1154 his grandson William de Braose, 3rd Lord of Bramber passed it to the Knights Templar, who made many structural changes. They widened the church by rebuilding the nave and chancel to the same width as the Saxon-era tower. In about 1180, they erected a large chapel—effectively a separate church in its

History Cornerown right until the 19th century, when an arch linked it to the nave and made it a de facto south transept. At the same time, they added a north transept with an aisle and two chapels. They also paid for a vicar and his accommodation.

After the Knights Templar were emasculated in 1307, Pope Clement V conveyed ownership of the church to the Knights Hospitaller, another religious order, in 1324. They extended the nave on the northwest side - forming a chapel which had openings into the nave and the tower - built a porch on the south side and carried out work on the nave walls. Although the advowson later passed out of the Knights’ control, it was restored to the order in 1963. They had been dissolved in 1538 but were re-established in 1831 as the Venerable Order of Saint John and later founded the St. John Ambulance organisation.

The church fell into decay during the 18th century, when the living was poor and the villages of Sompting and Cokeham still supported only a small population. Repairs in the 1720s and 1760s were not enough, and two bells had to be sold to pay for proper repairs in 1791. Richard Cromwell Carpenter undertook more restoration in 1853: this included re-roofing the church and replacing the shinglework on the spire, rebuilding the Knights Templars’ chapel into a south transept, improving the aisle in the north transept and cleaning the stonework.

The tower is the most important feature of the church and is known nationally and internationally as an exemplar of Saxon architecture—although recent analysis[3] suggests that its upper stage may have been renewed in early Norman times to an identical design. The spire - a design known as the Rhenish helm because of its prevalence in the Rhineland area of Germany - is unique in England. The design comprises a cap of four shingled gables rising steeply in a pyramid formation.

Marquis Rangers 1st Team

No full write up this edition because coach broke his keyboard after applying too much finger pressure except the following:

At the beginning of the season mutterings of the following:“They’ve had their time…”“Past it…”“No longer a force…”“Falling apart…”“Barely raise a team…”

We love proving people wrong, revenge so far has been sweet!

Win our games in hand and level on points!Sussex Cup Semi-Final, League Cup Semi-Final & Trophyman Quarter Final!!!

In the words of Rafa Benitez “…I only speak facts…”…Pipe Down People!

Marquis Rangers ReservesWith hopes high and the team full of confidence we set off to play LC United away which would mean if we won and then caught up on games with PRC unbeaten we would only be a point behind. It was not to be in the end, with 2 players dropping out last minute and one having well let’s just say he’s looked and smelt better. We started the game brightly and ended up going 2 goals up and were at times playing excellent football and playing LC off the park. With a headed goal from Wayno Newton from a long throw,

Marquis Rangershis only contribution to the game, and . Half Time came and we were all full of beans and could have been more than two up. Second half started and three one on one changes for Aaron Coulsden within 10 minutes saw their goalie keep us at bay. Then it all went wrong LC United hit back with 4 goals which saw Marquis heads drop, Aaron Coulsden had to be carried off the pitch with a torn hamstring leaving us light upfront. We managed to hit back with a goal from Lewis Holloway after some excellent solo play by Aidan De Silva.

Next up was a long trip up to Horsham in the rain against Forrest Commission, against with some last minute drop outs and saving Dan Pym availability we went with 12 players. The pitch was like a hippo’s bath with a pass barely travelling more than 10 metres which made the game hard for us. However we managed to get our heads in front and went 3 – 0 up with goals from Gareth Clarke, Wayne Newton and ….. The opposition hit back second half by playing long ball after long ball which worked as they were down the hill as well and they got 2 goals back. The Revolution hung on to take the 3 points.

After the festive break it was a cup quarter final date with Worthing Minors, after losing earlier on in the season to them revenge was sweet. For most part of the game Worthing Minors were dominated by our movement and passing, they had a chance midway through the half which was a one on one change but Gareth Clarke pulled off a good save to deny them. The deadlock was broken in the second half when Jake Norris’s shot was saved by the keeper but Wayno Newton pounced to smash it in the opposite corner. The Marquis continued their domination and out of nowhere Carl Bennett got the ball on the half way line ran at the defence and hit an absolute rocket past the Worthing Minors keeper. Game Over – LC United in the Semi-Final.

Page 15: Local Vocal - February 2012

The gaffer was called away for work so Gareth Clarke took the lead for our next game at home to Wisborough Green. They were starting to put pressure on us in the league so a win put a gap back in place. We started well and got a penalty through Lewis Holloway being brought down, up stepped Gareth Clarke as usual and sent the keeper the wrong way 1 – 0. We then went 2 – 0 up and finally a goal from the midfield dynamo, Aidan De Silva his first of the season with a volley from 12 yards into the roof of the net. Well done son! Wisborough Green though hit back with 2 goals then disaster came when Carl “Ball Bag Pulling” Bennett got sent off for a second yellow card. Drastic times called for drastic measures so what did the caretaker manager do….takes himself off and brings on Ashley Towler. Towler performance can only be described as

2 things…a bull in a china shop and headless chicken. Jake Norris then got the goals he deserved after 2 very good performances with a powerful header in the top corner and then slotting home a second. Final whistle another 3 points for the Revolution.

With the back end of the season now entered an unbeaten run until the end of the season could see a close finish. PRC would not be able to drop any points other points than against us or we would go top. With the squad growing and getting stronger with the additions of Jake Norris, Carl Bennett, John Prattley, Andy Quigg, Dan Razavi and we still have Aaron Coulsden and Mike Bailey to return anything is possible…

Come on the Revolution…

Marquis Rangers

In next months issue, I will be discussing the recipe ‘Plum, almond and ricotta cake’

The recipe in question is named “Orange and tomato cod pappardelle” an Italian recipe that consists of Cod, tomatoes, orange peel and segments, onions, olives, dill, seasoning and pasta. It is a recipe that yet again has so much goodness within, it will give to you so many different tastes and textures that at first you might not think would go so well together, but once you have taken your first bite, you will notice that each flavour complements the next.

The orange works very well with the tomato, it combines 2 different fruits together that create a unique taste within itself. The olives and cod both play big parts in adding their own infusion of taste within this recipe, as you are mixing together the saltiness of the olives, the freshness of cod as well as your fruit element, this will give to you a taste like no other. I always like the idea of adding many different aromas and textures, this gives to you a recipe that will be unlike anything else you will have experienced before.
