Community Engagement & Educational Outreach WGBY strives to take an active role in the community by conceiving of, planning and executing, and participating in a wide range of initiatives. Many of these efforts require personal representation while others require support and planning services, volunteer organization, materials/resources, or intellectual leadership/guidance.

WGBY Collection at Springfield Library Thanks to the Springfield City Library, an entire wall of DVDs and Blu-ray discs have been made available for checkout to patrons of the C/W MARS library network. Called the WGBY Collection, this offering of public media content includes 1,398 disks. In its first eight months, content was checked out 3,554 times, which translates to 2.54 circulations per DVD. Over 150 DVDs have circulated six or more times. The most popular disc for checkout has been Finding Your Roots, which was borrowed 22 different times in eight months.

WGBY’s Fun & Learning Partnering with WGBH, Head Start, New North Citizen’s Council, and the YMCA of Greater Springfield, WGBY engaged approximately 90 children in grades PreK-5. Eight interns (one from Smith College and seven from Putnam Vocational Technical High School) amplified the impact of the station’s spring and summer outreach to children, families, and educators. As well as engaging children in reading, vocabulary, and non-digital, hands-on activities, interns and WGBY staff served as digital ambassadors, bringing the mobile media lab into classrooms for digital learning with PBS transmedia resources. Approximately 575 books were given to children for home use. Parents also received activities, tips, and free apps from PBS Kids and PBS Parents.

Cyberchase “Step it Up” Challenge The five-week, school-based Cyberchase "Step It Up" Challenge engaged 600 students (grades 2-5) to increase physical activity during the day by using math lessons to monitor their steps. WGBY has provided pedometers, electronic templates, lesson plans and other resources for children, teachers and families at the four local schools (Brightwood, Elias Brookings, Lincoln, and Gerena elementary schools).

Youth Media Institute (YMI) This year, WGBY partnered with Focus Springfield (public access TV) to train and provide five high school students the opportunity to explore career paths in media (TV, Radio and Print). Employing various media equipment skills, the students produced personal and community stories. They also assisted in creating content and helped with promotion of WGBY’s Presencia. As part of the New England Farm Worker’s Council “YouthWork” employment program, interns received stipends. Two alumni of this program are current WGBY Employees.

Telling Our Legacies Digitally (TOLD) WGBY’s TOLD, a community-based digital storytelling workshop engaged members of the community in producing their own personal “digital” narratives. In these workshops, participants learn how to write their own script, create a storyboard, record their voice, and use video editing software to assemble these elements into a short video. Throughout the year, three workshops were held, generating 19 digital stories. Three public screenings were held at Holyoke Public Schools and WGBY Studios.

WGBY Studio Tours The WGBY production and education departments have held three interactive station tours. These events enabled area students and interns to learn about career opportunities in the multimedia production industry. Students and interns were also able to explore production processes and, with guidance, even handle some studio equipment. Participating interns included students from Putnam High School, and Fulbright Students from Argentina (Mount Holyoke College).

Asparagus Festival This free, outdoor event took place on the Hadley Common and attracted nearly 6,000 attendees. It celebrated local stories, especially those of local businesses and agriculture. Though for many young adults, the draw was live music, food and drink, it was also a family-friendly event, with many family-oriented offerings developed and promoted. Children’s programs included:

• Live, in-person meet ‘n greets with Curious George. • An adaptation of PBS Kids online app Kart Kingdom

called Valley Scramble. • The Very Hungry Caterpillar parade. • Jurassic Roadshow.

Other key event takeaways:

• Approximately 6,000 attendees. • 115 vendors and farmers. • More than two dozen community partners. • More than a dozen food providers • Four live bands through Signature Sounds. • Chefs’ Spearit Luncheon with 150 guests.

Love for Learning: A PBS Kids Fan Fair WGBY’s Love for Learning: A PBS Kids Fan Fair on Feb. 25 was a comic book convention-inspired, free event for PBS Kids fans. Attending children were encouraged to dress up as their favorite PBS Kids character. Because so much of the interaction children have with PBS Kids content is through the television, this event sought to provide opportunities for children to engage creatively and interpersonally with show-related materials, other children, and with their own parents. Children were given the chance for live character photos with:

• Buddy of Dinosaur Train • The Cat in the Hat • Curious George • The Very Hungry Caterpillar • Star Wars characters

Key event takeaways:

• Nearly 3,000 attended. • A dozen PBS Kids show-related activity stations. • Seven children’s book author/illustrator tables. • Special screenings of PBS Kids programs.

WGBY partners for this event included The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Springfield Museums, the Zoo at Forest Park, UMass, Macaroni Kid, Baystate Health, Mary Lyon Foundation, and more than a dozen others.

LOCAL PRODUCTION Presencia WGBY’s Presencia is a half-hour bilingual (English-Spanish) show capturing the stories of the Latino community in western New England. Hosted by WGBY’s Veronica Garcia and Zydalis Bauer, Presencia keeps a local focus, featuring conversations specifically about the Latino history, diversity, and traditions in the region. It also showcases inspiring true stories, highlights rich cultural heritage, and spotlights local talent. According to WGBY research conducted in partnership with UMass Amherst, Presencia is the only bilingual public television program on the air in the PBS system. Engaging the Latino Community Season Two was well received, with viewers tuning in over the air and logging onto wgby.org/presencia to watch. Social engagement was high, too, with active Facebook and YouTube followers. Para La Comunidad According to the U.S. Census’ 2010 Census Redistricting Data [P.L. 94-171] Summary File, the Latino population of Western New England is anywhere from 10 and 15 percent — and growing quickly. Using data from that same report, the Pew Hispanic Research Center reports Hampden County as having a Latino population of 21 percent. The U.S. Census’ QuickFacts website’s 2010 data shows even greater concentrations of Latino populations in the cities of Holyoke (48 percent) and Springfield (38 percent). Whatever the precise figure, it’s safe to say that WGBY’s Latino and bilingual market is vast and growing. For this reason, the TV station created Presencia.

STORIES OF IMPACT

LOCAL PRODUCTION As Schools Match Wits As Schools Match Wits (ASMW) is an academic quiz show. Each season, student teams from schools within the western New England region go head to head in qualifying matches to see who can earn the most points. ASMW accepts all schools who desire to compete and each year the roster is drawn up at random, pulling names “out of a hat” to see which teams will compete against each other. The top eight highest-scoring teams of the season then compete in playoff matches to determine the season’s champion. Partnership with WSU ASMW is produced by both WGBY and Westfield State University (WSU), which provided the production facilities and student production crew. As it is an actual broadcast television production, ASMW is also a real-world learning environment for the television production students in WSU's Department of Communication. ASMW celebrates learning both in front of AND behind the cameras. Broadcast weekly during the school year on WGBY, questions for As Schools Match Wits are written in part by WSU faculty and students in accordance with Massachusetts and Connecticut state high school curriculum guidelines. Key Takeaways During its 11 seasons on the air, As Schools Match Wits has directly impacted:

• 46 individual schools. • 4,000 students and teachers. • Four Western Massachusetts counties

(Hampden, Hampshire, Berkshire, and Franklin). • Three Connecticut counties

(Litchfield, Hartford, and Tolland).
