Eno is a prestigious shrine of the Satsuma domain. To reach the top climb the mildly inclined 322 steps surrounded by a forest. You will enjoy the freshness of the natural green beauty. Ichihino Hot Spring The 2nd lord of the Satsuma Clan, Shimadzu Mitsuhisa, described this hot spring as “outstanding”. It is lined with ryokan, Japanese style inns. The waterfall with a drop of 6 meters is in the center of the town. Koshiki Island Koshiki is an Island with abundant nature where marine sports and cruising can be enjoyed in its surrounding beautiful sea. You will find oddly-shaped rocks created by the earth's crust movements. Enjoy the local specialty fresh kibinago, silver sprat, and a heartwarming encounter with islanders. Nagatoshi no ogatamanoki This tree Ogatamanoki, Michelia compressa stands on the ground of Ishigami shrine. It is designated as a national natural treasure. This 800 year-old tree is 22 meters high, and is one of only two Ogatamanoki trees so designated existing in Japan. Ningyo iwa One of the oddly-shaped rocks on Nishikata Coast along the Route 3. It is said this rock was created by the strong feeling of a mother who died on the beach while waiting to meet her husband and her child. You can enjoy the beautiful sandy beach on the nearby coast. Sendaitaki Hot Spring It is located in the oldest hot spring resorts in Kagoshima, where ryokans, Japanese style inns, and shops quietly lined along the foot of these mountains. The hot spring was designated as one of the 100 greatest hot springs in Japan by its high spring quality. The ryokan and hot spring where Saigo Takamori stayed still remain. Ushinohama scenic spot A part of the Kagoshima prefectural Natural Park and with a number of oddly-shaped rocks and reefs along the coastline. The sun setting over the rock with a shrine gate is spectacular. You can also enjoy this beautiful view from the train windows. Akune Oshima Island This uninhabited island has one of the most beautiful oceans in Japan. You can enjoy marine sports and camping in summer. Visitors can also enjoy feeding some of the about 130 wild deer living there. Lodging house Akune touring STAYtion This lodging house makes use of a former express train with sleeping berths known as Naha, which was in operation until 2008. Meet local people as well as travelers from many different places. Akune Hot Spring There are many attractive places to enjoy such as public bathhouses regularly visited by local people, ryokans, Japanese style inns, and a hilltop hotel offering panoramic views of the East China Sea. During the harvest season (from Dec to Feb) of citrus fruits bontan, you can also enjoy a bontan bath. Stopover for cranes It is one of the rarest spots in the world where people can have a close look at a group of more than 10,000 cranes and hear their call. The scene of cranes storming up against a backdrop of the rising sun is overwhelming. The migrating period is from late October to late March. Samurai houses at Izumi Fumoto These samurai houses had played both the role of residence and the position of power for Kagoshima samurai warriors. Stone walls as well as buildings with samurai house gates still remain at an elementary school and residences. Some of the samurai houses are opened to the public. Why don’t you explore this area in a sightseeing oxcart? Kannoji Temple It is the oldest Zen temple in Kagoshima. By order of Shimadzu Tadahisa, the first head of the Shimadzu family, it was constructed by Eisai, the founder of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. This temple owns the Thousand Armed Avalokiteshwara and four heavenly kings’ statues, which had been secretly stored in a jar during the anti-Buddhist movement at the beginning of the Meiji era. The biggest bell in Japan in Hakosaki Hachiman Shrine The bell with a 3.4 meter diameter is known for its ability to fulfill wishes. The smallest bell in Japan is also hidden somewhere in the surrounding area. Try to find it! Yunoko Hot Spring It is said that the hot spring was discovered by a turtle taking a hot-water bath. A turtle monument is found on the Yunokojima Island which is connected by land. Enjoy fishing ribbon fish between spring and autumn. Yunotsuru Hot Spring This hot spring is located deep in the mountain along the river. It was found from observation of an injured crane taking a hot-water bath to heal. Its spring water is known for healing wounds and many people visit for a hot spring cure. You can enjoy the historic buildings and rustic townscape. Yunoko Villa Espanola Fukuda Farm Serves multi-national cuisines, homemade jam, juice and wine made from fruit picked in the home garden. The farm commands a panoramic view of Shiranui Sea as well as seasonally blooming flowers. Tsunagi Hot Spring Shikisai The monorail will take you to an open-air bath located in the middle of the cliff called Chohangan. You can enjoy the wonderful aroma of the forest as well as superb views of Shiranui Sea and town from 30 meters above the ground. Satsumakaido Sashikishuku This area once flourished as a Sashiki castle town and a posting station on the way from Satsuma. The remains of the townscape can still be found. The traditional feel of the shopping street is due in part to the various kinds of specialized era stores lining its length, including fish mongers, groceries and soy sauce storehouse. Sughtseeing Utase-bune This boat operated only by wind and tide cruises ecologically among Amakusa Islands. Enjoy the fresh seafood from Shiranui Sea -- right there -- fished by trawl fishing, one of the traditional fishing methods of Ashikita. Otachimisaki Park Both adults and children can enjoy tennis, putting golf, fishing and other activities. A major swimming beach of Kumamoto is close by. There are also camping-site and log cottages. Stay over and enjoy the beautiful sunset and night sky. Hinagu Hot Spring The Hot Spring resort is lined with rare three-story buildings, historic ryokans, Japanese style inns, and old style public bathhouses where you can encounter local people. The wandering haiku poet Taneda Santoka visited here and he wrote “I wish I could stay forever”. The streets of Hinagu Enjoy historic whitewashed walls, retro signboards and even an encounter with friendly elderly people. 600 literary boards written by Santoka are hung everywhere. Find them! Koda-yaki Pottery Agano kiln Koda-yaki pottery is the only kiln in Japan that keeps up the technique of Korean celadon inlay where white clay is embedded in grooved patterns. The Agano kiln with a history of 400 years is the oldest kiln in Higo (present Kumamoto). The beautiful color of this pottery is created by Hinagu clay, and delicate patterns are created by proficient skill. Certainly worth seeing. Hinagu Chikuwa “Hinagu Chikuwa” made from fish is popular for its sticky texture. Especially the Chikuwa fresh out of the fryer are high in fish flavor. There are 6 Chikuwa fish paste shops. Why not try one? Shohinken This teahouse was established by Matsui Naoyuki, lord of Yatsushiro, for his mother. Beautiful Higo irises and Iris laevigata bloom near the pond in early summer, and spectacular foliage with autumn color spread out before you. Successive family treasures of Matsui family are on display in the house. Designated as national historical property. Shiranui and Mizushima Island Designated as national historical property. Located near the mouth of the Kuma River, it is one of the three fastest rivers in Japan. According to Japan's oldest chronicle Nihon Shoki, the water began gushing out when Emperor Keiko visited. Gokanosho Settlements located deep in the Kyushu Mountain Range. It is a so called undiscovered region in Kyushu where untouched nature still remains. It is also famous for its beautiful colored leaves. Don’t miss the waterfall with a drop of 70 meters and a suspension bridge across the deep valley. Midoriya is a ryokan where Yosano Akiko, a famous female Japanese poet, stayed. Napoleon iwa, rock said to be shaped like Napoleon’s head. A communal bath where Saigo Takamori took.
