DAYTON, Ohio, March 14, 1969 - -- Twenty four local high school physics honor
students and their teachers from 12 secondary schools will be the guests of honor at
a banquet Thursday, March 20, in the University of Dayton's John F. Kennedy Memorial
Union, at 6 P.M. The student guests will be awarded Department of Physics
certificates for outstanding accomplishment in their high school physics courses.
Dr. Joseph Feldmeier, Vice President of the world famous Franklin Institute in
Philadelphia and director of its research laboratories, will be the speaker at the
dinner which is co-sponsored by Sigma Pi Sigma, UD's Physics Honor Society, and the
Society of Physics Students, a national organization, in the Ballroom.
Dr. Feldmeier, whose topic will be "The Need for Making Physics More Relevant,"
has been director of the Franklin research laboratories since 1964. As a research
person, Dr. Feldmeier played a principle part in the development of the nuclear design
of the Skate class of Submarine Reactor (SFR). He also participated in the designing
of the Nautilus reactor and during World War II was a part of the radar research
programs conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of
several national and international physics organizations.
A special guest for the evening will be Dr. Cecil Shugart, National Director of
the Society of Physics Students from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
