This was Grace’s first meet so we are very proud of her impressive performance. We wish Grace and the Bancroft Gems Gymnastics Team the best of luck in their upcoming spring meets.

To see Grace and the rest of the Apsley Gymnastic Club members demonstrate their skills, mark Friday April 26th from 6 to 7:30 on your calendar for our third gymnastics show at the NKCC.

OPP WARN RESIDENTS OF DANGEROUS CONDITIONS

With the current streak of rain and mild weather across Central Ontario, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are advising all residents to be aware of hazard-ous ice surfaces and open water.

As spring rapidly approaches we also see water levels rising with creek and river banks becoming un-stable due to the melting snow runoff and fast moving very cold water.

Residents should be aware of the dangers present around lakes, rivers and creeks and to be mindful of children who may be curious and venture too close to these potentially dangerous areas of fragile ice and open water. The Peterborough County OPP strongly urges par-ents to be aware of these changing conditions and to take the time to properly educate their children of the dangers during the spring runoff. Furthermore, the OPP wish to remind snowmobilers and other ice going adventurers to check before travel-ling on or across any of our lakes and rivers. Be sure to plan ahead and proceed only if it’s safe to do so.

BRIDGE REPORTby Bob Sutton

It is that time of year when most of us are saying “I’ve had enough of snow and the ground is wet and slopply, so what can I do?” Come to Trinity United and have an afternoon of Bridge with a bunch of friends. I must compliment all those people who bring in snacks to eat between breaks. No sticky buns please.

Once again I would like to reiterate the fact that playing Bridge is an excellent brain stimulator, or so I’ve read. Also meeting wonderful friendly people. We play in a scent free building and offer free coffee with our snacks. For those who have not ventured out yet, come and visit us on Fri-days, from l - 4 p.m. at Trinity United. For further informa-tion, contact Bob at 705-656-9401.

Who would have though that in one innocent mo-ment your life could be influenced so immensely by two little birdies. It was a day like any other in October 2012 when Dave came home from work and stood in the front doorway….and with a nod of his head he summoned me to come and look at what he had brought home. My eyes gazed into the plastic container where two tiny lit-tle fledgling birds were nestled together.

“What do you want me to do with them, they won’t survive.” I said. “Well they would have been dead by now if I had left them at the gravel pit.” was his reply. He told me how their nest had been disturbed and how the young were scattered on the ground near speeding monster trucks loaded with gravel. The fact that they had made it here alive was in itself unbelievable. He had scooped them up and placed them loose on the seat of his truck. Two hours went by before quitting time and when he came home he had to search his truck to find them. One was in the pocket of the door and the other under the seat. You have to ride around in Dave’s truck to realize what a scary thing that can be - even for a human - let alone a tiny bird already stressed. That truck is so noisy! It has a big stack for a muffler that roars right behind the passenger side rear window and the whole thing kind of shimmies and shakes as you travel down the road. The winding road home does not help either for Dave is a little of a speed demon. When the little birdies arrived they were two little feathered blobs with legs were splayed wide on the smooth bot-tomed container.

My first instinct was to provide them with soft bed-ding and a heat lamp for warmth. Having done that the next thing was what do you feed fledglings? I felt they would not survive but I surfed the internet anyway for information. I was surprised to find that you can feed them soaked dog kibble. Well ... that I do have ... and set about preparing their first meal. Toothpicks became the replacement for mother’s beak. Mouths opened wide as I made the first offering of food and morn-ing found them still alive and twittering. Much to my surprise they survived the first week. Feeding times became timed rituals of at least once or twice an hour. Their first week was spent in the quiet of our bedroom. Once they made it through the first few days I got my hopes up that they would survive which then presented a whole other problem.

Photo and story by Rachel Conlin

Originally I choose to write this article about ‘kidding’, (goats having young). Due to events in nature that are not within our control, I have decided to write about some-thing more pertinent at this time. Besides, those goats just aren’t ready to kid quite yet and I would hope to have photos to go along with that article.

Instead, I am writing about ‘family’. When we think of homesteading or farming certain words come to mind. Words like; land, farm, vegetables, farm animals, nature, preserving, hunting, fishing, traditional skills. Another word should be; family. You can homestead/farm all on your own, but family makes it easier and worthwhile.

Above all, where did these traditions and the desire to continue them come from? Tim and I grew up here. The values of our parents and this land were instilled in us. The desire to keep that knowledge alive and to expand upon it is what’s important to us. It is my summary of Homesteading. From knitting needles to cutting firewood, canning pickles to shooting partridge, trapping beaver to baking bread and everything in between, this is what our parents did. A slowly dying art that Tim and I were fortunate enough to have our parents willingly and lovingly pass on to us. For this, for the appreciation of the land and life around us we would like to thank our families, our parents and in particular, a thank you to Janet and Abby. They exemplify almost every aspect of homesteading, have been there for us and have passed down their knowledge. Thank you. And perhaps next month those goats won’t be ‘just kidding’ about kidding!

ROMANCE FRAUD TAKES A HUGE PERSONAL & FINANCIAL TOLL

Canadian Victims Have Lost Millions

One of the fastest growing and most devastating fraud schemes in Canada is perpetrated through romance scams, according to members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Anti-Rackets Branch.

The romance scam has been around for decades. However, with the prominence of the internet and online dating sites being commonly advertised, it has opened up a large audience for scammers seeking vulnerable people wanting a relationship. It makes the scammer’s life easier because he or she can direct their efforts at building a friendship right away and not have to worry about finding the potential victim who is seeking a relationship.

According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), in 2012 there were 1,460 complaints from Canada of romance fraud. Of those, 1,047 victims were identified and their combined financial losses exceeded $14.8 million – more than any other identi-fied financial loss due to fraud. Almost 70 per cent of all victims were in their 40s and 50s.

Single or recently unattached people – often female – are the victims of criminals who initially approach their targets online. Usually this occurs through e-mail blasts, social media platforms, or singles and dating-related ‘meet’ websites. In some cases, prolonged interaction with individuals has cost some victims tens of thousands of dollars before the relationship ends – usually after the culprit gets what they want.

Police add all fraud is under-reported. However, the romance scam not only affects a person financially, it is an emotional roller coaster. Therefore, a victim is dealing with emotional and financial losses leading to the crime being under-reported.

“Dating and romance scammers try to lower your defences by appealing to your romantic and compas-sionate side. Ask yourself – ‘Would someone I have never met really declare their love for me after only a few letters or emails?’ If the answer is no, report it to police.”

Detective Inspector Paul Beesley OPP Anti-Rackets Branch

If you suspect you or someone you know has been a victim of romance fraud, or if you have already sent funds, don’t be embarrassed - you’re not alone. Contact your local police service or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

DID YOU KNOW? In 1905 John King had a general store in Lasswade and also ran a cheese factory next door. (Another cheesemaker for the co-op was Jack Oitment.). The hamlet also boasted a blacksmith shop run by one of the Hubble family.

NORKLA March 21 2013RE: North Kawartha Council unanimously passes defec-tive new zoning bylaw.

Representatives of North Kawartha Cottagers Associa-tions and other area cottagers who attended the North Kawartha council meeting March 5th and witnessed the passing of the new comprehensive zoning bylaw are in state of shock and disbelief that that North Kawartha Council passed the new zoning bylaw without accepting any of their requested changes.

During summer of 2012 NORKLA developed and unanimously passed a motion which was presented to council detailing several significant concerns about the proposed bylaw and asked that the changes be made to the draft bylaw. Several presentations were made to council endorsing the NORKLA proposals.

Mayor Whelan and Deputy Mayor Rand indicate they were satisfied with the bylaw as drafted by staff. North Kawartha departed from the normal practice of devel-oping a new bylaw engaging services of a professional planning firm. The bylaw has been under development by staff and council since early 2008.Area resident, Ambrose Moran made a presentation to council with illustrated handouts clearly identifying nu-merous and obvious errors in the zone schedules which he asked be corrected prior to passing the bylaw. One handout clearly identified serious errors affecting the zoning of his own property.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor clearly were uncomfort-able about the errors which were brought to Councils at-tention and discussion took place regarding the delaying of the passing of the schedules till a later date when cor-rection could be made. According to the posted council minutes the building inspector said the schedules needed to be passed and ratepayers could apply for an amend-ment or council could pass an application to rezone and further such an opportunity exist to fix ( known errors) at the five year review.Sensing the council was intending on passing a defective bylaw, a request from a cottager was made for council to have a recorded vote in order to have a record of which councillors in fact would vote to pass a defective bylaw.

Deputy Mayor Rand moved and Councillor Amyotte seconded that the new zoning bylaw be passed and all members of Council voted to pass the defective bylaw without accepting any changes proposed by NORKLAThe Clerk has issued the required Notice of Passing of the Bylaw and last day for appealing the bylaw to the OMB is April 4. If you obtain a copy of the bylaw from

the township it will include schedules reduced to 8 ½ x 11 format which is totally illegible. The township has indicated readable full sized schedules can be obtained through the township for $240.00. The Bylaw and sched-ules are not on the main North Kawartha web site which has not been operational since February.

Emergency Services Border Agreement North Ka-wartha and Duro-Dummer

Council approved an addendum to the agreement with Duro-Dummer with respect to providing emergency services to the islands in Stoney Lake. When an emer-gency call concerns an island and the location is unclear, both townships will send emergency services. Whichever crew arrives first will handle the emergency. Once the other township’s crews arrive, and the island’s location is determined, the crew from the other township will return to base unless their help is still needed. There is no cost to this procedure because it is a reciprocal agreement. Appointment of Representative for County Day at Lang 2013

Council appointed Shannon Hunter, CAO, to be the offi-cial representative to the County Day committee. Mayor, Jim Whelan, said that all of council will be involved, but Ms. Hunter will be co-ordinating North Kawartha’s participation because of her organizational skills and knowledge of the other townships. Woodview Library Heating and Cooling

CAO, Shannon Hunter explained that the cost of putting the 3 year old, 88% efficient heating and air condition-ing unit on the roof, as first proposed, is about equal to replacing the unit with a new, 95% efficient one. Council approved the purchase and installation of the new unit. It will be located inside the building and is expected to solve the high cost of heating and cooling at the Wood-view library. Township Website

CAO, Shannon Hunter advised council that a Request for Proposal has been issued to rebuild and improve the website that failed last month. The new website should meet accessibility guidelines, work with mobile apps, and incorporate e-commerce activities. Little Cedar Cemetery

Clerk, Connie Parent, informed council that, although the church that owns Little Ceder Cemetery requested that the township assume responsibility for the cemetery, the township will only consider this if the church is no longer in operation. A letter will be sent to the diocese to this effect. Ontario Sport and Recreation Grant

Council approved the application for a grant of $ 45,948 as recommended by Christine Hockley and Gary Geraldi from the Parks and Recreation Department. Ms. Hockley said that this grant would support the skating program by providing 2 professional trainers for figure skating, and providing some sports equipment for underprivileged children.

County Report

Mayor Whelan reported on his attendance at a three day conference in Toronto. He said that there was a presenta-tion from a representative from the great lakes that said the “great lakes are ruined”. Due to low water levels, there are places where the water is 200 metres from the high water mark.” Mayor Whelan said, “Can you imag-ine having a dock 600 feet long just to get to the water?” Counselor Carolyn Amyotte, who has worked on vari-ous water committees for years, said that, the real issue is “integrated watershed management..not just for the Trent, but for everywhere.” Crowe Valley Conservation Authority

Deputy Mayor, Barry Rand was congratulated on ac-cepting the chair position at the CVCA. He said that the authority is considering selling some of its properties to obtain operating funding. The budget was approved and an RFP has been issued for eight capital projects. Draft Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw (DCZB)

Rick Woodcock, representing NORKLA and the Chan-dos Lake Property Owners association, reviewed the position of these organizations with respect to the DCZB. These were also mentioned at a previous council meet-ing. He concluded by stating that he didn’t understand the “whys” behind council’s reluctance to support the position.

Ambrose Moran, who has been involved in reviewing the DCZB, discussed, and presented photos of a number of “boathouses” that have become “bunkhouses”. He said that the next step for property owners is usually to expand the bunkhouse to 400 square feet. Mr. Moran also pointed out a number of errors in the schedules that form part of the DCZB. These schedules are maps indicating the zoning. He pointed out where land near the Chandos Lake beach, originally designated as open space, is now zoned “Institutional” (for churches, etc). Other mistakes include water that, as he said, “ironically occupies a big chunk of my own property where there is actually land.” He concluded that he has no confidence in the schedules, and recommended that the DCZB not be passed until the mistakes are fixed.

Mayor Whelan said that “We’ve spent four years in total looking at the Zoning Bylaw. Everything that has been brought up here today has been discussed and voted on.”Chief Building Official, Tim Powell said that the zoning schedules stem from the Official Plan. He explained the institutional zoning issue and said that there is nothing that can’t be fixed on the official plan. He also said that he “doesn’t see anything detrimental” about the zoning schedules and that the DCZB should be passed. In a re-corded vote, all members of council unanimously passed the bylaw.

Spring Please, No Ice

It’s April and there’s hockey but our Leafs are falling downIt seems they go into a swoon when Boston comes to townAnd when they can’t beat Winnipeg you know the jig is upFour decades pass and still we know there’ll be no Stanley Cup

After nine rebuilds and several trades they still don’t find a wayTo act like Maple Leafs of old when coached by Happy DayThere were Apps and Bentley, Barilko too and Teeder was still youngThen Punch came in and shook them up and several Cups they won

But the years they pass and Cups they go to teams we scarcely knewThere’s Tampa, Carolina, Might Ducks and Dal-las too And once per while there’s Boston and the team from dead DetroitBut the big team in Toronto, the main prize won’t exploitAre there unwritten laws that say the Leafs must miss the danceWhen spring arrives and Leafs play golf while other teams advanceWhile Sid the Kid, three guys named Staal and a goalie named John QuickCollect the trophies and the loot and Leaf fans get ‘the stick’

I really hope that I shall live to see the magic dayWhen blue-shirts strut and bear the Cup along Bloor Street then down BayI think they’ll win it on the road in overtime, game sevenIn Markham’s new arena, then I’m happily off to heaven

In my dreams …….

LIONS Report April 2013 By Brenda Lenson and Photos Mike Blair

On Saturday, February 23rd the Apsley & District Li-ons Club had the pleasure of hosting The Apsley Talent Show and Dinner. The idea behind this show was a fun night for families and I think that we succeeded. From the little guys who did “gangnum style” to the more sen-ior entertainers, it was an amazing night. Special thanks to Robert Crosby and his band who also entertained the crowd, you were great! Thanks also go to Lions Merle Post, Norm Edwards and Joe McCauley who worked on the talent night; Darlene Doxsee for the delicious dinner and of course Mike Blair for a great job emceeing the night!

Mother’s Day

Mark your calendars for our Annual Mother’s Day Brunch, Sunday, May 12th at the NKCC. The brunch will be held from 10 am until 2 pm.

TALENT ABOUNDS IN THE TOWN OF APSLEY By Frank Pacheco

At the beginning of the month the Legion received the results of the poems, pictures and poster contest from our zone. This year we had more winners than ever. Out of nine participants we had one third place, Sebas-tian Wright for his Primary Black and White Poster, two second place winners Kara Navraril Intermedi-ate essay and Josephine Rowling, Primary Black and White Poster. A poem by Lilly Munro, Freedom (see below) won first place.

This month the Apsley Legion had their speech con-tests and going to the next level will be Lilly Munro for Jr. grades and Kai Han for Intermediate grades. I know that by the time you read this article the March 23 sec-ond round of contests in the Peterborough Legion will have occurred. By going to the Royal Canadian Legion Website under speeches the other contest dates will be mentioned. If you want an afternoon of fun and to see what our young kids are really up to I encourage you to attend them.

Then on February 23, the, Apsley Lions Club had their second, Apsley’s Got Talent Dinner and Show. Here too talent abounded. After the Lions’ own Alley Cats, made up of our community’s well know accordi-on players Betty and George started things off, a three year old entertainer Caitlin Koehler could not wait to go on stage to deliver her song. This was followed by a trio of dancers of Cooper, Terrell and Isabella wooed the crowd with their movements.

The featured band was Gravel Road, which included members from Bancroft including Steve the owner of Guitar Nuts. They brought their unique Blue Grass sound to the Center. Our very own Robert Crosby was featured through the evening. Watch for great things

to come from this young entertainer with his unique singing style. Just in case you don’t know Robert is the son of Roger Crosby a well known violin player in our community. He was there to entertain us with the Del Mastro crowd. The evening however ended on a sad note. Mike Blair, our master of ceremonies announced that Norm Edwards who helped organize the function along with Merle Post was going to be deported from our NORTH KAWARTHA COMMUNITY. The reason - the song he sang about the “pee holes in the snow” blaming our township for the problem. The accusations were un-founded so our mayor, who was present at the function, was going to deport him. All in good fun I might add.

The night was a success and money raised by the Apsley Lions will go for good causes around the com-munity.

Well done Legion and Lions as talent abounds around the town! Photos from the evening on page 12.

FREEDOM

Passed away at home on January 29, 2013. In 1994, Bruce retired from his profession as an electrical estima-tor and moved with Brenda to their house on Jack Lake. He was able to enjoy his many hobbies in the Apsley area - fishing, golfing, photography, riding his Harley and re-storing his 1974 Corvette. Music was another interest and he was a sax player in the Apsley Firefly Band. He was an active member in the computer club for seniors and as-sisted with the organization of several Apsley Parades. We gratefully acknowledge the many cards, e-mails and phone calls. A celebration of Bruce’s life is being held at the Apsley Community Centre on Saturday May 11, 2013 at 2:00pm.

Continued from Page 5

Now I needed a cage and a generous friend supplied a beautiful one fit for a king and queen. They graduated from the bowl into the cage with a small nest in one corner. By the second week they started moving around in the cage and after feeding times they always huddled together on the perch at which time I removed the nest.

I soon realized that I was house bound by two little birds that needed to be fed on the hour. Time moves quickly in the bird world and by the third week they were eating on their own. More research proved that they were wrens. Feisty little things especially the male who stepped on top of his partner demanding he be fed first. In a book called ”Animals Speak by Ted Andrews” he talks about how the divine reveals itself in nature and how intricately every aspect of nature is woven into our life. By the study of what he calls spirit animals we can determine their roles within our life and of how they can touch a primal part of our heart and soul stirring long dormant embers. He claims animals can become your friends, your teachers and your companions. In order to differentiate who is who I named them Ricki and Luci. Editor’s note: Read part two of this story in next month’s Apsley Voice.

What Kind of Policing Do YOU Want?

The North Kawartha Police Services Board (PSB) is developing a forward-looking plan for overall OPP pri-orities for our Township. If you have ideas, feel free to attend the next PSB meeting on May 16, 2013 at 9:00 am in the Township Council Chambers.

In the past year we have responded to a number of issues within our community:

• Parking and traffic congestion at the “curve” on Burleigh St in Apsley

• Use of ATV’s on roads in our area, and support for development of ATV clubs

• False alarms and pocket-dialed 911 calls which divert valuable police resources

• Police resources directed towards Whispering Pines

• Support for DARE and Pedal-for-Hope programs at the Apsley School

• Support for the radar board recently obtained by the Community Policing Committee

The Police Services Board ensures we have adequate policing resources for our community, while providing input to Council on the costs of our Police Services. We meet regularly with the OPP detachment com-mander to share information. We maintain an office for the OPP in the Emergency Services building on Hwy 28, which increases the productive time an Officer can be in our community. We work with neighbour-ing Townships and the OPP detachment on common programs throughout Peterborough County.

Board members Stacey Scott, Bert Donia and I are available to hear your concerns – either individually as you meet us, or we’ll see you May 16.

If Jesus had lived in modern times, there would have been many pictures and news accounts of His trial and execu-tion. He did not so we only have the Gospels and ancient writings of these events. These were written about 2000 years ago.

This event began with Jesus and His

Disciples preparing to journey to Geth-semane. He told them to bring bags , money and swords. When they arrived, the disciple

Judas betrayed Him and he was ar-rested. Peter, a man of peace used his sword to cut off the ear of a Roman Soldier. Jesus was then marched back and forth between Jewish and Roman Authorities for hearing to establish his guilt. At a trial before Pontius Pilate He was found guilty and sentenced to death.

The long walk carrying His Cross, and the brutality of the Roman Soldiers were punishment meant for the worst criminals not an innocent man. The Crucifixion of Jesus marked the end of the greatest event in history.

If Jesus had lived in modern times would the headlines read HE IS RISEN.

There will be a special Easter service

for children and the young at heart on Easter Morning at 11.30 am.

Well folks, we are still keeping busy during these snowy winter months. We have moved the Chair Volleyball games to Mondays so that more people can participate. Come out and join us at the Coe Hill Legion @ 2:00 p.m. Mon-days. Norm, our President, had a productive interaction with the Woodview Seniors group. We will be visiting back and forth more this coming month with this interesting bunch of people.

We had a “snow day” for our last meeting, but eight intrepid members still showed up at the center for a great meal and an afternoon of games. Too bad there was so much snow to move when we got back home.

Sally Khan, the local Nurse Practitioner, was at our first March meeting, and spent time giving us valuable insight into the concept of Adult Immunization. She also gave us a sense of how to better become aware of our health needs and how to better communicate these to our Doctor or other Health Provider. For the second March meeting Josee Bessette from the M.T.O. gave a needed talk on Licensing for Seniors. This was a good month, lots was learned, and much discussion ensued.

This month, April, brings us a performance by “The Agents of Harmony”, a group of 8-10 from Peterborough who will be regaling us with a collection of tunes from yesteryear. Our second monthly meeting, and home cooked meal, will see Sue Suhr, and Debbie Hall from the North Kawartha Public Library presenting an in-formed journey into the wide range of services provided through the Library.

An email from Liz of Apsley was forwarded to me about the owl that parked on her phone line in Febru-ary, for about 6 hours. The Hamilton Naturalists’ Club, in their December Newsletter, high-lighted this same species of owl, seen November 4, 2012 – only the second time that it has been seen during 39 years of the Hamilton Fall Bird Count. Its name? BARRED OWL. Because of its hoots of 8 notes dropping to ”aw” at the end, its call has been described as if it is saying “ who cooks for you, who cooks for you all”. It has a variety of other barking calls and screams. By night it is one of the noisiest birds, particularly in March and April with its maniacal laughter when it is courting. It is a large, stocky bird -17”- 24”; gray-brown with a “puffy” head; does not migrate; usually seen in wet woodlands. Note the bars ACROSS the neck and LENGTHWISE streaks on the belly. Except for the Barn Owl, it is the only owl with big, brown eyes. It rests quietly by day (unless it is cloudy), hunting at night for rodents, birds, frogs. It locates its prey by sound, thus can hunt in total dark-ness. Hunting is helped by being able to swivel its head 270 degrees and also by its exceptional ability to hear, aided by having its two ears located differently on each side of the head, allowing it to be able to

pinpoint sounds, even sounds coming from under the snow. It is difficult to find but 3 things are helpful – the young call to the parents at night; look for the pellets that it coughs up after eating indigestible fur and bones and, lastly, it is inquisitive - imitating its call often brings it near. It was wonderful hearing it when we lived on Jack’s Lake.

WHO COOKS FOR YOU WHO COOKS FOR YOU ALL

Finally the days are getting longer and the sun is shin-ing brighter and warmer. Makes one want to go for nice long walks again without freezing. Can’t wait to wash off my truck to see if there is still a shine under all that dirt. Looking forward to Spring, which is just around the corner.

Seeing that Spring is close I thought it would be a good time for Community Care to show a picture of our cloth-ing room to give you an idea of what we have to offer our community. Our Springwear selection is on the racks as of February 28th. Knick knacks, linens, books, puzzles, etc. are put almost daily as well. Lots of little surprises to keep it interesting. Let us not forget our volunteers who do such a great job with the seasonal changeovers. A lot of work is put into keeping Community Care looking the way it does, GREAT. I will continue to provide information on all the services we offer to the community. In the meantime keep smiling, it makes everyone wonder what you’re up to. Until next month I hope you all have a healthy, happy month.

The Woodview Neighbourhood Good News

by Heather Brooks-Hill

March 15th and it’s snowing and blowing. It was unexpected! An ordinary day turned into a nightmare. Climate Change is like that. It is now evident and it cannot be ignored. Extreme cold and hot swings more frequent, storms more violent.

Our Canadian federal scientists rang the alarm bell last year. First with this: “The Canadian Press pub-lished on March 01 2012….’One of the world’s leading scientific journals has criticized the federal govern-ment for policies that limit its scientists from speaking publicly about their research. The journal, Nature, says in an editorial in this week’s issue that it is time for the Canadian government to set its scientists free….’”

Then last summer the Death of Science March to Parliament Hill – scientists in mourning costume car-rying a black coffin.

And now a Toronto Star article: “‘Muzzling’ of Canadian government scientists sent before Informa-tion Commissioner Suzanne Legault. One civil servant calls the situation ‘absolutely embarrassing’; 168-page report detailing the communication barriers – ‘systemic efforts’ to obstruct access to researchers.” (Kate Allen: Science, Technology World, March 15 2013).

The First Nations knew not to build to close to the water in order to keep the water clean. The Settlers knew that one insulated the pipes in winter and left the cupboard doors open overnight to prevent pipes burst-ing when it was cold. The wise North Kawartha folks who live in Woodview know that it’s important to have a supply of dried goods and plenty of water for emer-gencies such as health challenges and power outages.

Young caring for the old. Elders mentoring the young. Neighbours helping neighbours. Sustainable societies.

Now is the time to come together to work collectively to protect our local communities from the potential impact of climate change; 1) by adopting practices to reduce GHG; 2) by planning public awareness strate-gies with concerned elected representatives; and 3) by electing politicians pursuing mitigation policy meas-ures.

Woodview can do it. North Kawartha can do it. Peter-borough County can do it.

This year our kindergarten class has been involved in an exciting project called Roots of Empathy. This pro-gram is the first of its kind in the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.

Roots of Empathy (ROE) was developed by educator, Mary Gordon in 1996 and first implemented in Toronto area schools. Since beginning, it has reached over 450,000 children across Canada and around the world. ROE mission is to “build caring peaceful and, civil so-cieties through the development of empathy in children and adults.” Through the carefully constructed lessons, ROE can reduce the levels of aggression in students and, at the same time, increase their social/emotional awareness.

Our program involves a three way partnership: the leadership of the Susan Pirie, retired teacher and trained Roots of Empathy facilitator, the support of the Early Learning Team, Ms. Swift and Mrs. Lye and community parent and baby Deanna Bolton and Layla. Each month includes threestructured visits/lessons:

* The Pre Family visit which focuses on infant develop-ment, the preparation for the family visit and includes predictions of what changes they may see in the baby’s development.

* The Family visit with the baby present. This is the time to show how the baby has developed from the past visits and discusses temperament through various interactions with the baby.

* The Post Family visit allows the students to reflect on their own feelings and focus on understanding the feel-ings of others.

Additional learning takes place beyond the structure of the lessons (students write, read, reflect, use com-mon language, etc.).Through this experiential learning with the baby, junior and senior kindergarten students are learning to identify and reflect on their own feel-ings and the feelings of others. Students have begun to ‘play’ better with one another, share materials and belongings and are beginning to express their feel-ings more often with adults and each other. Roots of Empathy is a two year commitment and we will see it expanded into the older grades for next year. Thanks to all for making Roots of Empathy happen at Apsley – we are very fortunate! For more information, please feel free to drop into the school or visit www.rootsofempathy.org.

The birds have started singing and the air has that smell that promises spring is around the corner. With spring comes planting; be it sprouting veggies indoors, or stocking up on new annuals for the garden. What-ever shade of green your thumb is, if it can’t be reused, be sure to recycle all plastic plant pots and trays in the containers blue box.

Plastic black, green or brown, single pots as well as the multi-celled trays can all be recycled.

As you know, recycle is the last of the “R’s,” so before recycling your pots think of how you could reduce or reuse them. When purchasing plants, inquire if the nursery reuses pots in a take back program. If you grow from seed, reuse your pots rather than purchasing new ones every year or, reduce your need of small pots by finding out how to make newspaper plant pots that can be planted directly into the garden once the weather is warm enough.

In honour of Earth Day on April 22, make your garden as green as possible. Did you know soil and mulch bags can be recycled? Just give them an extra shake, and bag them up with the other film plastics in the fibres blue box. Or go one step further by installing and using a rain barrel for watering your garden. Rain bar-rels are available in a variety of locations including the County of Peterborough’s Public Works office.
