Calverley Business Network is now approaching 80 members our free monthly meetings in the Thornhill Arms are attracting a large number of people. Our friendly, informal atmosphere and “no need to book” appeals to many businesses who do not want to make commitments to regular and expensive networks. Calverley Business Network is run by volunteers and is nonprofi t community group. Our monthly networks are FREE and we meet on the First Tuesday of every month at The Thornhill Arms in Calverley, anyone welcome.
Please contact Helen West on [email protected] if you would like further information. We have recently taken on some new volunteers to help us run the network here is a little information about some of the committed team running the Calverley Business Network.
Zandra Moore
In my day job I run a sales consultancy for small technology businesses called Salescake Ltd based in Calverley. As a mum of two I like to take an active role in my local community and this year
became a Governor at Calverley Parkside School. One of my best moments this year was being part of the team of the team who organised the Royal Wedding Tea Party in Calverley Park; we are currently planning the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations for next year. It is a real pleasure to be a founding member of the Calverley Business Network, a fantastic group of people passionate about supporting one another professionally and personally.
Victoria Pritchard
Although I’ve only been in Yorkshire for 4 years it defi nitely feels like home! As an actress I have worked on classic Yorkshire productions such as Emmerdale and The Royal Today and I 8
months ago, together with my business partner Helen West, set up Redvoice - a communication, voice and presentation skills coaching company based in Leeds. As a Londoner, the most enjoyable thing about living here is the amazing sense of community and I have relished the opportunity to get involved. I was a founding member of the CBN and also helped to organise (and hosted) the Royal Wedding Tea Party in Calverley Park.
James Clayton
Company director at family run Claytons MOT & Service Centre. I have lived in Calverley all my life and recently became a dad to 4 month old Freya. I have a massive passion for motorsport
and over the years have worked as pit crew for a number of teams, continuing to do so with United Autosports (Audi UK) on their 24 hour team. Other hobbies include 5 a side, track days, mountain biking and skiing, generally anything that involves going at speed I’ll have my hand up.
Helen West
I have had connections with Calverley for the past 17 years and through the years I have met and be-friended many people in the community, mainly through the school and the cricket and
dog walking. It was through the dog walking that I met Victoria Pritchard and through this friendship, we also became business partners, setting up Redvoice. The success of the Calverley Business Network is testament to the passion of the people who run it and those who attend and I look forward to seeing it go from strength to strength.

My NPT at Eccleshill want to work as closely as possible with local residents, listen to their concerns and deal with the issues raised. One way of achieving this is to invite local community members to my Neighbourhood Policing Team on joint Police/community patrols to show them the work offi cers do and get their perspective on safety issues in their local area.
If you are interested in joining offi cers on patrol and seeing fi rst hand some of the local problems that staff face then please contact myself on Bradford 376168. I will speak to you personally and arrange for you to patrol with staff. Should you not be able to go out on patrol but would like a local offi cer to visit you at home and get an update as to the work we are doing and at the same time they can listen to your problems then please ring the same number.
There continues to be a percentage of burglaries which could have been prevented by some very simple preventative measures. This includes not leaving doors and windows open when out of the house. It only takes a few seconds for someone to reach through an open window or walk into your house via an unlocked door, yet the devastating effect having your home entered and property stolen can last for some considerable time. Therefore please remember
to lock all doors and widows when out of the house or going to bed. During the day be aware which doors and windows are open. At this time of year be particularly mindful of doors/windows in conservatories and windows near any fl at roofs you may have. A few seconds taking these simple precautions can make your home much more secure and prevent you being a victim of crime.
Following the success of the open day last year at Eccleshill Police station we will be opening the doors of the station again on Saturday 23rd July. The event will begin at 11am and fi nish at 3pm. There will be guided tours of the station and talks from Bradford Drugs Team and Public Order Training. This is in addition to numerous other attractions from the police and our partner agencies. Best of all it is all free, so please come on join us.

Change the way youthink about food
to lose weight
We can help you resist
Christine Smith, Shipley, Bradford
01274 222610lighterlife.com/christinesmith
My weight journey all started in my late teens, hovering around a healthy 10 stone through my teenage years, I walked everywhere, lived my spare time outdoors and ate normal family meals. But like most young adults I came of drinking and driving age, my spare time was spent socialising in pubs and clubs, and instead of walking everywhere I bought a car and became very lazy. After a few years of watching the scales tip, my confidence fell and I joined a slimming club. I was single at the time and found it easy, I lost 2 stone very quickly....but like most slimming clubs it crept back on, and quickly. When I met my husband I had gone from a size 12 to a 16, and I was bigger than before! He was a non smoker, so I took the opportunity to quit. With that I gained even more weight and as I was happy, I ignored the scales. We dined out and holidayed and had a happy few years, but
inside I was miserable. My wedding day was fantastic, but sadly I was at my heaviest. My wedding dress was a size 18 and on the wedding day I far too big for it and I felt uncomfortable, even had to be squeezed into it. I couldn’t eat my meal or sit properly I was so uncomfortable. I still feel a pang of shame and sadness when I see my wedding pictures. Deciding to start a family I joined a slimming club again, vowing to lose weight for the sake of my children, and I was desperate to have a healthy pregnancy. I again lost 2 stone, though when I got pregnant I was still quite big at 14 stone. I managed to hover around the same weight throughout my pregnancy, but having maternity leave was like opening the fridge to me! Long days alone with a new born baby are hard on someone with food issues; I would eat to fill time. Eat to feel happy, eat to feel good. As my daughter grew, she was
soon old enough to be weaned onto food and I made sure this was healthy. We had active days and went out walking a lot, swimming and spending time outdoors, but I still couldn’t get the weight off. As she became mobile and independent I started to struggle to keep up. I had to do something NOW before I lost these important days in my daughter’s life. At Christmas 2009, I went out for our works Christmas meal. My boss had recently lost quite a bit of weight and I was impressed with how good he looked, he began to tell me about Lighter Life and what it entailed. I was really interested in how the food packs worked, and the counselling sessions. I knew I needed more help than just losing weight, I needed my mind re wiring! For me the problem went deeper, I needed to go back to basics, teach myself to enjoy healthy food, appreciate feeling satisfied and not feel like I had to burst buttons to be satisfied. I basically needed what Lighter Life had to offer. Online I read up on Lighter Life, discovered a session in Shipley with Christine Smith. I emailed her and she called me very quickly, inviting me to a session the following week. It was inspiring, and very informative. My doctor approved of the Lighter Life programme (Programme NOT diet!), and I was ready to start. The first few days were hard to get through, withdrawing from food is tough. Like saying good bye to an old friend! But the massive weight loss makes it so worthwhile. In other slimming classes the first weeks loss is the biggest and it slows right down after week 2, but on Lighter Life it drops off every week and doesn’t slow, it’s amazing. The counselling sessions were tremendous, getting right to the root of my issues with weight and food. It really is the best thing I ever discovered, I feel healthy, I look healthy and I’m confident. It took me 14 weeks to lose my target of 4 stone. I’m 4 weeks into maintaining and I’m still the exact same weight. I see Christine my counsellor every week and I also help out in our Wednesday evening class to keep me involved. I’ve even plucked up courage to start road running, and I’m up to about 6 miles a week! A few years ago I couldn’t run a hundred yards! As well as losing weight, Lighter Life has given me the tools to keep my weight off.

What a great day with over 3000+ attending the Royal Wedding Tea party in Victoria Park Calverley stall holders were busy all day with record turnovers for some.
Thank you to all members who made the day a great success raising over £2000 for local charities.
Volunteers arrived from 7am to to set up marquees and put up bunting, local MP Stuart Andrew was one of the fi rst to start hammering stakes into the ground.
Members of the public started to arrive from
9.30am to get their place in front of the big screen by 10.3oam when the event was due to start we already had hundreds camped out.
The Rotary Club of Calverley and Claytons MOT displayed a beautiful range of cars generously allowing children to jump in and out. The Stanningly Fire Service brought along the fi re engine, a great hit with the kids, the Firefi ghters also took part in a few tugs of war, winning against the local pub team from The Thornhill Arms and losing against an army of local mums, much to their delight.

Throstle Nest Riding School for the Disabled provided pony rides all day, with a never ending queue the ponies and staff worked extremely hard. We were delighted to hear they raised over £500 on the day for their new roof appeal.
The whole day was compared by CBN founder Victoria Pritchard who has discovered a new talent for childrens games commentary. The games were a great sucess with dozens of children participating in various sack races, egg and spoon and assault courses. Winners all received medals.
We were also delighted that BBC Radio Leeds, BBC Look North and The Yorkshire Post came along to cover the day. The event was featured on Look Norths Afternoon news programmes and live interviews were conducted for the news on BBC Radio Leeds.
Calverley Business Network founder and event organizer, Zandra Moore, said on Look North: “This park was donated by Queen Victoria for her jubilee and I think this community here enjoys the Royal Family and the celebrations around the Royal family.”
This was not only a great day for the local community and charities it was a huge success for local business. When this event was fi rst discussed back in January this year, the committee was keen to run an event in which local businesses would also benefi t. In this regard the
event exceeded all expectations. Many of the 3000+ who attended came from outside the Calverley are, businesses who ran stalls on the day, sponsored or were trading in the village all reported increases in turnover with some it was their busiest on record. Even after the event finished at 4pm many of the event goers took the party into the local pubs, which were described as «packed out».

Valentine’s Day started in the time of the Roman Empire, in tribute to the Goddess Juno. The following day was the Feast of Lupercalia, where
sacrifices and rituals took place in honour of a heathen god. While sacrifices seem rather terrifying, feasts always sound good to us, and a humble root vegetable may well be your secret to success this February 14th.
Forget imported, out of season asparagus, beetroot is the ultimate Valentine’s Day vegetable. Since Roman times, beetroot juice has been considered an aphrodisiac and its vibrant bright pink colour is stunningly romantic. Jane’s Beetroot Soup is a great Valentine’s Day dish, light and full of flavour, with a striking swirl of sour cream and chives. Beetroot is also incredibly versatile, so

beetroot (or carrot) cake by Jane Baxter
Instructions:Preheat the oven to 165°C. Grease and line a 25cm loose-based cake tin. Mix together the flour, baking powder and sugar in a large bowl. Add the sultanas and grated beetroot. Beat
the oil and eggs together, then add to the bowl. Combine with either a wooden spoon or electric mixer. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 1-1¼ hours. Insert a metal skewer into the cake; if it comes out clean, then the cake is cooked. Cool on a wire rack. As an alternative, substitute beetroot for carrots to make a carrot cake – it works
just as well.

Fancy a glimpse into your future? According to an old wives’ tale, try twisting the stem of an apple whilst reciting the names of people you might
marry. You will marry the person whose name you’re calling
when the stem falls off. Then, cut the apple in half and count the pips. This is, so they say, the number of
children you’ll have.Whoever you’re planning to

Guy Watson began farming at Riverford in Devon over 20 years ago. He was an organic vegbox pioneer, giving customers the freshest possible seasonal fruit and veg at a fair price to customers and growers. Many of our customers are as passionate about the business as he is; no-one wanted the business to be large-scale. Guy teamed up with ‘sister’ farms who shared his passion and wanted to re-build the connection between grower and consumer.
River Nene was the first sister farm in 2005. From Sacrewell Lodge Farm near Peterborough, we deliver to homes throughout the east of England. River Swale followed in 2007, from Home Farm in North Yorkshire. River Swale supplies veg boxes across Yorkshire and the North East. Riverford at Norton has since opened, delivering organic veg to homes around the Hampshire area.
Working as a family of farms means we can maintain our commitment to low food miles, local employment and the support of local farmers and keep a close link between grower and consumer. .For more recipes and to join our box scheme visit: www.riverford.co.uk

Riverford Organic has been voted Best Online Retailer in the Observer Ethical Awards for the second year in a row, voted for by the public. The award was presented by The Observer’s Lucy Siegle at a ceremony at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on Thursday 9th June. Other hosts of the awards were actor Colin Firth and model Lily Cole.
This is Riverford’s fi fth Observer award: the company won Best Ethical Business 2009 and its restaurant, the Field Kitchen, won Best Ethical Restaurant 2009 and 2010 in the Observer Food Monthly Awards. The organic home delivery company beat off competition from Offset Warehouse, an online shop for ethical clothing and interiors and Wiggly Wigglers, selling natural garden-ing supplies.
Guy Watson, Riverford founder, said “We are amazed and thrilled to have won this award for the second year in a row. The Observer Ethical Awards celebrate businesses and people that are trying to do something genuinely useful. At Riverford we aim for good food, good farming and good business so to be recognised for this is fantastic. Thank you to our customers for all your support over the years.”
Other winners included Compassion in World Farming, James Lovelock and The People’s Supermarket. The Observer Ethical Awards are now in their sixth year.

As an alternative, substitute beetroot for carrots to make a carrot cake – it works
just as well.

soup or cake using a Valentine’s wooden spoon. In Wales, wooden love spoons were given as gifts on February 14th, carved with hearts, keys and keyholes. Giving a carved spoon to your loved one symbolised the unlocking of your heart.
Fancy a glimpse into your future? According to an old wives’ tale, try twisting the stem of an apple whilst reciting the names of people you might
marry. You will marry the person whose name you’re calling
when the stem falls off. Then, cut the apple in half and count the pips. This is, so they say, the number of
children you’ll have.Whoever you’re planning to
surprise this year, Jane’s recipes are sure to make an impact. Look out
for the Riverford Cookbook hitting the shops this spring.

We are a local family run business and have been working in the industry for 25 years.
We work on all makes and models of vehicle and specialise in the servicing and repair of German brands such as Audi, Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen.
Our team understands the importance of deliver-ing a high level of service to our customers at all times and we take care to ensure our customers are happy and satisfi ed with the work we have carried out. This helps us retain their business
and generates a great deal of word of mouth referral work from their friends and family.
Many people are still under the impression that if their vehicle is under 3 years old they have to go back to a main dealer for servicing and repair work for the manufacturer’s warranty to be pre-served, however this has changed in recent years and you can now choose to have your vehicle serviced elsewhere without invalidating the war-ranty, providing the repairer uses genuine new parts purchased from the manufacturer.
