Executive Summary

This report focuses mainly and primarily on the

market share of local commercial banks as of June

30, 2014.

This report includes 11 out 13 local commercial

banks.

This report does not include 2 local commercial

banks due to the lack of information which are

Jordan Commercial Bank and Société Générale de

Banque – Jordanie.

This report compares between every two respective

semi-annual.

There will be another study that compares between the figures of Jordanian commercial

banking sector rankings as of June 30, 2013 and June 30, 2014.

There have been several changes in this sector after the acquisition of HSBC Middle East

by Arab Jordan Investment Bank (AJIB).

It can be seen from the below figures and charts that

o The Arab Bank plc is losing the market share of the Total Assets. However, it is still

controlling more than half of the market.

o The Housing Bank for Trade & Finance still maintains its conservative strategy in

lending.

o InvestBank is taking more risking in lending.

o AJIB is moving concretely forward with its unprecedented growth strategy after the

acquisition of HSBC Middle East.

o Bank al Etihad’s growth strategy is finally paying off as it has increased noticeably its

customers’ deposits, deposits growth rate and assets growth rate.

o Jordan Ahli Bank is rehabilitating after existing several markets.

o Many banks have increased their paid-up capital.

o Most of the banks lost their earning per share (EPS) and Book Value per Share in

JOD.

Consolidated Jordanian Banking Sector

The Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) classifies the banks into two major categories, namely

national banks and branches of foreign banks. Each of these categories is further divided into

commercial banks and Islamic Banks. Moreover, there are 13 (thirteen) national commercial

banks, 3 (three) national Islamic banks, 8 (eight) branches of foreign commercial banks and 1

(one) branch of foreign Islamic bank as shown in the figure below.
