State of the Chapter
March 1, 2018
Dear Gamma Gamma Members:
The 2017-2018 Barton College Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) year has been action-packed and
fulfilling for our chapter. Barton’s PBL officers and advisers are proud of everything you, the
members, accomplished this year.
Six members and two advisers attended the 2017 North Carolina State Leadership Conference in
Charlotte, NC. We brought home many awards and were applauded by the Barton community
for our success. Five members and two advisers attended the 2017 National Leadership
Conference in Anaheim, CA.
During the Fall semester, chapter members were visible on campus participating in the Club Fair,
the Majors Fair, Family Weekend, Day of Service, and the Barton Christmas activities. Members
were also visible in the local community volunteering for numerous outreach projects which
touched the lives of children and those less fortunate in the community through our partnerships
with the Wesley Shelter, Wilson Daily Times, American Heart Association, and March of Dimes.
In November 2017, four chapter members attended the North Carolina PBL Fall Leadership
Development Conference in Greensboro, NC. In January, two advisers and three students judged
and presented a workshop at the North Carolina Future Business Leaders of America Triangle
East Regional Competitive Events. One member staffed a recruitment booth. In February 2018,
chapter members and advisers judged School-Site tests for North Carolina Future Business
Leaders of America State Leadership Conference. In March 2018, two advisers will judge at the
North Carolina Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference.
Thank you, members, for your active participation. The Gamma Gamma chapter officers look
forward to an exciting State Leadership Conference in Charlotte, NC, on April 5-7, 2018. And
then we are on to Baltimore, MD, to the National Leadership Conference in June. The Gamma
Gamma chapter members are thrilled to assist others to Elevate Your Future.
This annual report highlights the many projects that Barton College’s Phi Beta Lambda Chapter
has completed this year. “Thank You” to my fellow officers for your wise counsel and guidance.
And “Thank You” to the shareholders of the Gamma Gamma Chapter. Your enthusiasm will
inspire both present and future members to allow Phi Beta Lambda to become a resource through
which they can enhance and refine their business leadership skills.
Sincerely,
Bronte Thompson

Number of Members
The membership of the 2017–2018 Gamma
Gamma Chapter stands at 33 with seven
Professional Division Members. Members
actively participate in numerous projects
during the year. Project leaders are
designated in order to ensure documentation
of our activities throughout the busy year—
for state and national competitions, campus
President’s Trophy, and our scrapbook.
Our members are campus leaders--Gamma
Gamma members are also members and
officers of other fraternities and sororities,
sports teams, and the Student Government
Association. “Our presence,” therefore, is
evidenced by “their presence”--with
leadership, school spirit, and a commitment
to lifelong learning emerging from all of our
projects. As our banner and signs displayed
in the gym and softball, baseball, and soccer
fields proclaim: at Barton College “Bulldogs
Mean Business.”

Wilson, North Carolina
(population 81,000+), is
located 45 miles east of
North Carolina’s capital
city of Raleigh and seven

1849, Wilson was primarily an agricultural
community focusing on cotton and tobacco
crops. By the 20th century, Wilson had
become the world’s largest bright leaf
tobacco market. For the 21st century,
Wilson is well-positioned on the cutting
edge of a global economy and proud to be
North Carolina’s Gigabit City.

known as Barton College, was founded.
Atlantic Christian College changed its name
to Barton College on September 6, 1990. Dr.
Douglas Searcy became Barton College’s
12th President in Fall 2015 and was

members. Ms. Teresa Parker assumed the
role of chapter adviser in 1980 and for the
past 38 years has mentored students and
provided North Carolina with productive
business leaders. (Mrs. Parker served four

Recruitment Activities
Recruitment Letter
Dear Fellow Student:
It is our pleasure to invite you to join Phi Beta Lambda (PBL). PBL is a non-Greek co-curricular
organization designed to bring education and business together through innovative leadership and career
development activities. PBL, combined with Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), forms an
association with more than 250,000 members.
The 2017-2018 PBL officers for Barton College are:
President Bronte Thompson
Secretary/Treasurer Grace Browning
Conference Director Kaity Lynch
Program Director Bryson Reavis
Publicity Director Tiffany Cooper
Membership Director Luke Miller
Project Director Luis Reyes
This year our chapter has numerous activities planned. Barton College continues the service project “Day
of Service” and, of course, the Gamma Gamma chapter immediately volunteered. Chapter members
continue their support of the Wesley Shelter by volunteering at The Clothes Line—a resale shop
benefiting the Wesley Shelter. Our ‘Angel Tree’ project provides toys and clothes for underprivileged
children at Christmas. During the ‘Mission LIFT’ project, PBL members raise funds for and awareness of
the March of Dimes.
We will continue our partnerships with the Wilson Chamber of Commerce and the Wilson County
Department of Social Services. These organizations provide numerous networking opportunities with
leaders in our community. A project, Home Delivered Meals (similar to Meals on Wheels), has been very
rewarding.
The highlight of our year will be attending the 2018 North Carolina State Leadership Conference (SLC)
April 5-7 in Charlotte, NC, where you may compete against 300+ other NCPBLers. Placing first, second,
or third in individual events or first or second in team and chapter events qualifies you to compete at the
National Leadership Conference (NLC) in Baltimore, MD, June 23 -27, 2018.
The 2017-2018 year will be the best ever for Barton’s Gamma Gamma Chapter of PBL. Join our PBL
team and YOU will be a part of an organization which continues to Elevate Your Future.
Sincerely,
Bronte Thompson

School of Business Display Cases
and Bulletin Boards
In the School of Business at Barton College
are many display cases and bulletin boards.
The display cases contain awards Gamma
Gamma members have won at state and
national conferences. The bulletin boards
display information and documentation
about projects and events. For example,
placed on the boards are reminders for
upcoming PBL meetings, sign-up sheets for
projects, photographs of previous projects,
and information about PBL. On a separate
bulletin board are articles and photographs
of PBL members from the school
newspaper, The Collegiate, and the local
newspaper, the Wilson Daily Times.
Majors Fair/Club Fair
During Club Fair (held in
August and September
2017) and Majors Fair
(held in February 2018),
six Gamma Gamma members spoke to
potential business majors about PBL,
projects the chapter was planning for the
upcoming year, and State and National
Leadership Conferences. Even if these
students do not join PBL this year, perhaps
they will join and be active members for
their next three years. A follow-up letter was
sent to those who were in attendance.
Websites
The Barton College website
(https://www.barton.edu/campus-
life/activities/clubs/) and Barton College’s
intranet—Campus Connect—contain
information describing the Gamma Gamma
chapter, its activities, and awards. These
websites not only promote PBL on campus,
but also encourage potential Barton College
students to investigate our chapter.
Ms. Parker encouraged students to join the
Gamma Gamma Chapter of PBL using
Barton’s e-mail system with the following
message:
“Phi Beta Lambda’s mission is to bring
business and education together in a positive
working relationship through innovative
leadership and career development
programs. PBL isn’t just another student
group--it gives you the competitive edge
through career exploration, self-
improvement, and community service
opportunities. As a member of PBL, you
will build your resume, meet business
leaders in your community and beyond,
experience the rewards of volunteerism, and
enjoy travel and special activities. It is the
'senior' sister of the Future Business Leaders
of America organization.
The Barton chapter is very active on campus
and among the 35 other chapters in North
Carolina. Membership is open to all
students--regardless of major or GPA! This
year our travels will take us to Greensboro,
NC, Charlotte, NC, and Baltimore, MD!! In
January 2018, the Gamma Gamma chapter
of Phi Beta Lambda at Barton College will
celebrate its 57th birthday!! Get involved!
Make new friends! Have a great time!
