Now in its 13th year, this prize, formerly known as the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture, was renamed this year in honour of the award’s leading patron Richard Lester AM. Lori’s work is entitled Banksia grandis – love begets love. Lori has been a finalist several times before in this competition. The works will be on public display at the Art Gallery of WA (AGWA) in the Centenary Galleries from 9 November – 9 December 2019, with the winner announced on 8 November 2019. More than 400 artists from across Australia entered the prestigious competition with a portraits of an Australian, or Australians, that they respect or admire, or a self-portrait, with the hope of winning the Richard Lester Prize for Portraiture $50,000 cash prize, as well as two economy class return tickets to any Singapore Airlines destination. The finalists originate from across Australia, with fifteen from WA, ten from Victoria, nine from New South Wales, with two each from Queensland, Tasmania and the ACT. A quarter of the finalists have been named as finalists in previous years of the competition. The other prizes up for grabs are the $10,000 Tony Fini Foundation Artist Prize (selected by artists’ peers); the $7,500 Baldock Family People’s Choice Award (selected by the general public); and $1,000 cash and $250 from Oxlades Art Supplies plus one economy class return ticket to any Singapore Airlines destination (except USA) for two highly commended artists. Lori spoke of her work, explaining that ‘This is a love story, it is my family’s story. It tells of love lost, forbidden and endured. Of discrimination, shame and division we weren’t immune. Thirty finalists in the Lester Prize Youth competition for high school students across Australia have also been chosen. Youth finalist works and Salon de Refuse's works (which will be selected from entrants across the country and featured digitally on the big screen as well as on outdoor exhibition panels) will be on display during this time at Brookfield Place and various other locations around Perth city. My Inbox….

Kaya noonakoort (Hello everyone). Wandju (Welcome) to the September edition of The Boyup Gazette.

Well, we are two thirds of the way through the year - it is certainly flying along…. and as I write this, there is promise of a few consecutive days of rain. Let us hope that this is the case.

The recent Shire rate rise has seen Boyup Brook make headlines as reportedly the Shire with the largest rate increase in Western Australia this year. It has created much conversation in the community which is sure to continue, particularly in the lead up to the Local Government elections in October. If you are interested in nominating for Council, now is the time to act with there being four vacancies. Nominations open September 5 and close a week later on September 12. Contact the Shire office on 9765 1200 for further information.

September looks to be another busy month with many activities and events on the community calendar. If you are able, I encourage you to attend the Sandakan Service on September 10 to remember the horrific occurrences in Borneo during World War II.

And wishing the Dads a Happy Fathers Day for September 1.

Until next month, Jodi

The Boyup Gazette acknowledges the Noongar people as the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work. We pay tribute to elders past, present and emerging

and recognise the contribution they have made, and continue to make, to our community.

Rylington Park invites you to our annual field day on Friday, 20 September.

We are very lucky to have a few trials to walk through in the morning. We have the oat variety trials by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), Boyup Brook Farm Supplies and Wrightson Seeds have a pasture trial and CSBP has a nitrogen timing and rate trial for high yielding barley.

The trial walk will start at 10:00am just after morning tea in the shearing shed. After the trial walk, we will have lunch provided by CSBP.

In the afternoon we will kick off with a talk by a representative from the Bendigo Bank’s Rural Bank. Bendigo Bank is Boyup’s only bank at the moment – so come and listen to what they have to offer.

Secondly, we will have Jason Balhorn, the weather man from Albany. I am not sure if he can assure us more rain, but it will be great to listen to what he shares with us.

For our final topic – Rural crime and activism – we have invited three speakers.

Holly Ludeman is the founder of the Sheep Collective and works as a Corporate Governance and Compliance officer for Emanuel Exports and has been in the livestock export industry since 2013.

We also have Hon Colin de Grussa MLC member for the Agricultural Region who plays a big role in backing fights against rural crime and lastly, we will have our local police Sergeant James Gaunt, who will make sure we deal with crime and activism within the law.

After all three have had their say, we will ask them to sit on a panel where we can sketch scenarios and how to deal with them as well as have a Q&A session.

We will finish the day around the bonfire with hamburgers and refreshments. Mark this day in your calendars and come and join us for the day.

Keep your eye out for more info on the day closer to the time.

PS: Just a reminder to all Boyup Brook students going to Agricultural Schools in year 11 to apply for the Rylington Park scholarships.

The applications will come to us through the high school or if you’re not at the high school and are planning to go to an Ag school in year 11, please email your application to [email protected] .

These scholarships are available for all students in the Shire of Boyup Brook who will be in an Ag school in year 11.

For more info please contact Erlanda on 9765 3012 or 0429 375 609.

Swimming Pool Season Opening Day After consulting with Pool Management it is proposed that the Swimming Pool will open on Saturday 05 October 2019 subject to: fine weather; safe microbial counts in the water; and the endorsement of the Swimming Pool Committee of Council. Look for updates/confirmation of the Pool Season opening day on the shire website (www.boyupbrook.wa.gov.au) and on the shire Facebook page.

Ranger Ranger services have picked up a number of dogs recently without the owners contact details on the collar. Please check your yards and make sure your pet is secure, registered & wearing their collar. That way if they do roam free we are able to return them to you easily.

The Shire has had some reports of straying stock onto public roadways and we would like to thank the efforts of the locals who assisted recently. Stock owners are asked to check their fences regularly, particularly boundary and road fences. Straying stock can potentially cost millions of dollars in some accident scenarios. If you notice straying stock - call the owner to notify them and or call the shire so we can reduce the hazard to our community.

Harvey Dickson's Rodeo The 2019 Rodeo is on! Join us from Friday 25th - Saturday 26th October 2019 for all the action!

Welcome to Harvey Dickson's Country Music Centre. Located 5km out of Boyup Brook, in the South West of Western Australia we are a unique blend of Country Music, Rodeo excitement, music, historical memorabilia and farm life.

Each October we host Harvey Dickson's Rodeo - a weekend of rodeo action, music, stalls and excitement. Camp out and be right where the action is. Check out our website [email protected] for more information, dates and performing artists.

What's on at the Early Learning Centre. At Boyup Brook Early Learning Centre we explore the seasons in all their glory, including wet weather, with our raincoats and gumboots.

Our spacious verandah area allows us to get outside anytime of the day, and provides a great transitional space for indoors to outdoors.

This month has seen a few days of lovely rain, which are perfect for us to explore muddy puddle on our gravel path and opportunities to collect and recycle water for our mud kitchen.

We've been busy weeding our native garden space, and discovered a variety of fungi specimens popping up amongst our garden mulch. It has been amazing to see the different varieties, sizes and colours.

We currently have vacancies across our age groups, with a FREE Play and Stay enrolment process for families looking to enrol at the Service. So why not call in for morning tea and see what we’re all about!

See you in the playground!

LETTER TO RESIDENTS

You will have received your rate notices now and if you feel aggrieved at being in the Shire with the highest rate rise in the State, then the opportunity to do something about it is in your hands. Local Government elections are open for nominations, elections occur on 19th October and nominations close on September 12th.

There are 4 wards with vacancies and it is about time for a change.

I believe the Council needs young, local members from our traditional farming community. We are all busy, but some recent decisions are, at the least, questionable; and need members not afraid to question recommendations and to do their job and debate vigorously.

The recent community meeting made it clear that Council was not communicating adequately to the community members.

Recognising outstanding teachers, providing students in Western Australia with high quality education – whatever their ability, wherever they live, whatever their background.

Our own local teacher, Renee Knapp from Boyup Brook DHS has been announced as one of four finalists in the WA Premier’s Primary Teacher of the Year.

For Boyup Brook District High School teacher Renee Knapp, making a difference in a child’s life is the best part of her job. Renee Knapp has been the Music Teacher at Boyup Brook for 14 years, after teaching in South Hedland, Perth and Kojonup schools.

Renee Knapp has an undeniable and infectious energy and enthusiasm that she brings to all aspects of her role as a teacher and mentor at the Boyup Brook District High School (BBDHS) and within the Boyup Brook Community as a whole. She goes above and beyond her role as a teacher to engage and empower those around her to ensure that all students have a sense of belonging as well as academic success. Her strength in creating positive working relationships amongst staff, parents, students and the community have been crucial to the school’s successful cultural change over the last four years, resulting in positive academic results, and to its long-term sustainability. Her professional knowledge and understanding is extensive, and the unique way in which Renee applies them, has made her a leader at the cutting edge of her profession.

Renee understands her students, making it a priority to not only know the name of each child in the school but also their backgrounds and individual characteristics and the impact of those factors on their learning. This allows her to maximise their learning opportunities and find that ‘teachable moment’. Her passion for the significant role that music plays in the development of the whole child led Renee to develop a sustainable, high quality Music program that has benefited the students and the community. This has helped to alleviate behavioural issues and has given students a sense of belonging and a purpose in their participation in school life.

The Music Rock Band Programme at BBDHS is one-of-a-kind, with students from K-10 engaged in independent song writing and students from Year 4 up given the opportunity to explore industry standard recording and performing.

Another outstanding contribution that Renee has made is her initiative in developing and implementing the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) system across the whole school. Furthering her work with the Music program and in response to staff concerns around the consistency of behaviour management, Renee recognised the need to not just correct behaviour but to teach it and to then support it with the use of mental health strategies to ensure students feel they belong. “I believe wholeheartedly that, as educators, we must address the needs of the whole child and ensure we are developing well-rounded individuals.”

Renee’s ongoing work in Positive Behaviour Support and the area of student mental health and wellbeing has complemented already existing initiatives within the school around pastoral care and the focus on “the whole child”. Boyup Brook DHS as a result of this has developed pastoral care and support

Mrs Knapp, a Top Teacher Finalist

processes that wrap around every child ensuring success at our school. The Positive Behaviour Support Framework has been recognised state wide with Renee now being invited to present on its success to teachers and administrators around the state.

We wish Renee all the best for the presentation event and award announcement on Monday 28 October at the 2019 WA Education Awards.

BOYUP BROOK POLICE

Let’s talk about Domestic Abuse / Violence Family violence are patterns of behaviour which are intended to coerce, control and create fear in an intimate relationship or family environment.

I was told some time ago by someone that it was rife here in Boyup Brook, but a review of the statistics from police attendances doesn’t add up. It’s not to say it isn’t happening, because let’s face it, people in relationships are going to argue at some point, if we didn’t, we wouldn’t be human, ….it’s just not being reported.

It’s when the arguing steps up a notch and the abuse becomes psychological or physical, that we have to draw a line in the sand.

What are some of the catalysts that get the abuse cranking ….well there are numerous, but the ones that seem to be consistent are alcohol and the use of illicit drugs.

Now I’ve been doing this job long enough to know that it takes two to tango, and there may be a misconception that it is always the male as the aggressor.

I know that isn’t always the case, and I have personally attended a number of incidents where the altercation escalated, ending in a knife fight and subsequent homicide or life threatening injuries.

We want to step in before this occurs and ensure people get the assistance they need to battle their illness, this responsibility not only falls on the police, but that of the community as a whole. Alcoholism and drug addiction are illnesses and can be treated. How do I know this, because I have been involved in dealing with people battling addictions, committing offences and have intervened, getting outside agencies involved and changing people’s lives around.

I was called out over the weekend to attend such an incident, in this case the injuries weren’t life threatening, however were serious enough to warrant a trip to hospital for a check-up.

No person deserves to be treated like this, and unfortunately what we see over and over are people caught up in a circle of violence that seems impossible to break free of.

When love goes bad, instead of using your partner as a punching bag, utilise some of the services that are provided and are available to get yourself some help. If you don’t know where to turn, come and see me down at the police station or give me a ring. If you know someone that is struggling with an addiction and are not sure what to do, give me a call.

Boyup Brook Police have charged a 50 year old male with Assault occasion Bodily Harm (Circumstances of Aggravation) following an investigation after a Domestic Violence incident in the evening of Sunday 18th August at a home in Boyup Brook. The male will face court in Manjimup later this month.

NO THANKS!

Learning Language and Culture

As part of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, the Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre is currently facilitating an online Noongar Language and Culture Course.

Participants are meeting weekly on a Monday evening to learn about Noongar waangkaniny (language) and boodja (country). The group setting offers an opportunity to extend discussions about topics and to discover more information about Boyup Brook’s Aboriginal history.

Topics covered have included considerations when learning Noongar, guidelines for pronunciation, sentence structure, greetings, numbers, connection to country, spirituality, six seasons, weather, animals and a session on the past to today.

A selection of the words learned to date are: Bilya - river Wadjelas - white people Yaankga - thank you Moort - family Barna - animal Boola - many/big Djerpan - happy Kaadadjan - knowledge Maalak - cold Kaalang - hot Keyen - one Koodjal - two Dambart - three Koodjal Koodjal - four Maar - five

The season of Djilba enters its second stage, with weather is still cold, there is an easing of the rains followed by slightly warmer temperatures (“Indigenous Weather Knowledge - Nyoongar

calendar“ 2018). In traditional times, these easing rains would allow people to move more freely across country and groups of family would come together to collectively hunt and gather the wildlife that would be moving to freshwater sources to drink.

Anyone wishing to investigate this course, offered online through Curtin University, is encouraged to visit www.study.curtin.edu.au/offering/mooc-noongar-language-and-culture--cas1x.

If anyone has any records, or contacts who may be willing to share their knowledge, please contact the CRC on 9765 1169. Above: Noongar Language and Culture course participants

Boyup Brook District High School News Boyup Brook DHS Celebrations On Saturday 3 August, Boyup Brook DHS was invited to share their success stories around Positive Behaviour Support Initiatives at the 2019 PBS South-West Summit. One of the founders of the PBS Framework from Missouri, Tim Lewis, presented and provided valuable information regarding ongoing sustainability of this culture in our schools. Renee Knapp presented a session to a full house focused on “Embedding Positive Behaviour and Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategies”. It was well received and a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the focus we have at Boyup Brook DHS on pastoral care and teaching the ‘whole child’.

Renee has also been invited to give a full day’s presentation to the Mid-West Education Network in Geraldton in mid-September regarding a similar focus.

It is fantastic to see the hard work of our entire staff and school community being shared and celebrated across West Australian Education Districts. Not only does our work in Positive Behaviour Support have significant benefits for our students, but also those further afield. Sporting Schools Athletics Incursion What a great opportunity for our students! After a successful application to Sporting Schools, we received $3,000 to put toward incursions. The first one involved a Level 3 Coach from Bunbury, Bruce Cornish, attend our school for a day to train our students in athletic skills. He focussed on running style, sprints, long jump and triple jump. With the High School students, he also did a few quick drills on javelin.

It is amazing how a few tweaks in style and stance can make such a huge difference to the running times, jump distance and energy used. Throughout the day, Bruce worked with students from Pre-primary to Year 8. Every student enjoyed this experience and I learnt a few tips as well. Our next incursion will be volleyball!

“He was really inspiring and it was an amazing experience that I hope we can do again. It’s so cool Mrs Haydn organises these things for us.” Jacob D.

“The students absolutely loved the incursion, they couldn’t stop talking about it for the rest of the day!” Miss Barbetti (PP/1 teacher).

“Everyone had great fun with Bruce! We learnt you need an open chest and open hands when you run, keeping your elbows bent at a right angle and arms rotating from the shoulder.” Charlie C-J.

September Wildflower Watch

This is THE month for many orchids and a myriad of other wildflowers so go looking and enjoy.

Please remember that the picking or removal of such plants is illegal and know that if you don’t have the right soil and companion plants such as Jarrah, Marri and Wandoo trees growing in your yard there is no chance that transplanted vegetation will survive.

Now is the time to easily identify feral wattles (the large Eastern States varieties) and Tagasaste on your roadside and in your garden and EITHER remove altogether OR prune to prevent setting of seeds.

St Mary’s Primary School News Dealing with life-threatening emergencies, lighting fires in the traditional way, hosting renowned musicians and illustrators, and creating robots has all been part of life as a St Mary's student recently.

This term has been the busiest yet, with more still to come, including a Fathers' Day breakfast to honour the men in student's lives, and our famous pubic-speaking competition.

Year 6 students recently took part in a RSLS Life Skills course, where they learned the vital skills of CPR and basic first aid.

As part of our learning for NAIDOC Week, St Mary's hosted Josh from Dunsborough-based Koomal Dreaming, who led students through many different aspects of Aboriginal history and life, including lighting fires and traditional stories.

World-renowned singer/songwriter Andrew Chinn visited St Mary's recently, leading students through liturgical songs he has created over his extensive career, and teaching students a special blessing song which they will perform at our Fathers' Day Breakfast.

Later in the week, WA children's book illustrator Rebecca Cool, who illustrated Isabella's Garden by Glenda Millard, visited the school as part of our Book Week program to work with students in their art lessons. Students dressed up as their favourite book character on 23rd August, and were entertained by staff in their special performance of (an adapted) 'Where The Wild Things Are'. They then took part in special Book Week literacy activities.

The school has also been the recipient of a $2000 grant from Rylington Park recently. This will be put towards purchasing some new equipment for our students for our playground, one of the goals identified as a fundraising priority by our hardworking P&F Association, and the school is very grateful for the generous donation.

As part of the school's Digital Technologies program, all students are taking part in an intensive four-week STEM Slam, which involves exciting activities such as robot building and coding, making movies with green screen technology and programming and coding using Beebots.

Students will acknowledge the vital role Dads and our other male role models play in our lives with a Fathers' Day breakfast on Friday, 30th August. All dads, uncles, step dads, grandfathers and father figures are invited to come along for a bacon and egg rolls and a hot drink from 8:30am. Afterwards, the Year 6 class will lead the whole school through a short Father's day liturgy.

All students from Kindy to Yr 6 will take part in our annual Public Speaking Competition on 5th September. This is always a competition of very high standard and students spend a lot of time working on their speeches in the lead-up to the event. The winners from Yrs 4-6 will take part in the interschool Tree Talks later in the term, held at Kearnan College in Manjimup.

St Mary's has a new website! Feel free to explore all the great things St Mary's has to offer, including how to enrol for Kindy next year at www.stmarysbbk.wa.edu.au

Community Mental Health Action Team (CoMHAT)

Developing a community culture that has a proactive and supportive approach to Mental Health

CoMHAT and the community of Boyup brook want to break the silence. Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. Lets end the stigma surrounding our mental health.

If you are concerned about a loved one, know that you don’t have to be an expert to talk about mental health, ⁃ Its most important to listen, simply being present and showing you care means so much. Keep in touch, meet up, phone, email or text. Don’t just focus on their mental health, chat about everyday things as well, ⁃ remind them you care, small things can matter.

You can find quite a few resources online , www.sane.org offers a range of fact sheets & guides with mental health. We are all in this together and want to educate ourselves how to help. If you suspect a loved one is really struggling with life's challenges and you are concerned that they may be having thoughts of suicide.

DO ask the question: Are you having any thoughts about suicide? Asking this question WILL NOT be putting ideas in their head, It will show that you are genuinely concerned, that you take them seriously, and that it is OK for them to share their pain with you. DONT argue with the person, avoid saying things like , You have so much to live for, or look on the bright side, making a suicidal person feel guilty will only make them feel worse.

In Boyup Brook you can at all times reach out. Our local GP is a safe and confidential start. A mental health medical emergency falls under the same as a medical emergency by dialling 000.

CoMHAT is committed to providing information and education about mental health. Sam Curran is CoMHAT’s project officer but also a qualified CERT IV Mental Health support worker and works from the CRC on Mondays and Wednesdays. If you need some guidance to a support network or health professional that may be able help you, call her on 0416169608 to arrange a time for a chat. Know that you are not alone in your journey to feeling well.

Thank you for being you. Sam Curran

Girl Guides Plant Trees

National Tree Day was on July 28, so the local Guides planted several trees in the block adjacent to the Guide Hut during their usual meeting on the following Monday. These are now being watered each week as part of the Guide programme.

Just to add another dimension to maintaining and appreciating Nature, the Guides then visited Mr Graham Stuart’s home and spent the afternoon spreading wood chips throughout his garden. This was followed up the following week to complete the job. The girls loved the task and quizzed their Leaders on the names of the many native trees and shrubs growing in Graham’s garden.

They also enjoyed some time spent talking to Graham, but it was mostly ‘hands to the rake’ to get the job done in time.

Currently, the Guides are preparing for a camp in September, learning how to erect tents, light fires, do outdoor cooking, etc. and (don’t tell them!) making ‘something’ for Father’s Day. Above: Girl Guides hard at work

From The Lions Den

Well people, Its that time of year again for some students at the high school to be gathering their information and research towards the Sandakan Scholarship. Boyup Brook Lions are very proud to be able to fund this again, and sincerely hope that the young folk taking part enjoy their journey into realising just how brave our Australian men and women were in keeping Australia safe.

I missed two very important ‘thankyous’ in the last couple of editions of the Gazette. 1) Thank you Bob Campbell for your generous donation of Fuel, twice, for the Lions Community Bus.

2) Thank you to Peta and Chris Meredith for their promise to fill the Community Bus for the monthly elderly persons outings.

Not sure how true this is, but I have heard around the traps that the Lions are charging too much for the use of the bus. I researched other bus providers in the South West, and I assure you all that our fees are very fair.

If there are any folk out there who would like to go to Bunbury for the day shopping, say Centrepoint and one other place, I will need 14 people at $10pp. We can make a date and go spend your money. Please call me on 9765 2958. I wish to apologise for any Stuff Ups at the Lions Tip Shop. If anyone has any complaints please call me anytime. We need clean, good quality items to sell at our shop, all donations gratefully accepted, the money goes back into the community.

Many thanks for reading our section. Stay safe and look after each other. Glenda Moroni, President

Women In Farming Enterprises

In August we enjoyed a hands on tour in the paddock with Dan Glover from CSBP.

We started off spending a little time running through the Decipher App and its benefits then went out and did a crop inspection.

Here we took some plant samples and then went out an did a pasture sample.

Dan was a fountain of knowledge and educated us on pasture types and their feed an nutritional benefits and also what benefits they provide to the soil. We are looking forward to having a look at the results when they arrive back.

We were also very lucky to have an insight into the paperless office of one of our members, whom after attending the PinG workshop, was able to integrate the paperless system into their business saving time and office space!

Next month sees us returning to the CRC on September 3 for a Q&A meeting.

We will also be focusing on the resources available to WIFE members on Dropbox. And with quite a few members attending the upcoming PinG Farm Finance workshop, we are all looking forward to a little debrief.

Boyup’s Bloomin’ Lot

Garden Club enjoyed a lovely afternoon in August visiting Anything Grows Home and Garden on Walter Road in Bridgetown, owned by Helen and John Brown. This garden/nursery situated on 2.5 acres, was only started in 2013 and much thought and planning has gone into the garden.

The front entrance is paved with pressed gravel and leads to a small studio/gallery with quilts on display, artwork for sale and a beautiful diverse range of plants and flowers for sale. There are also on display some lovely ceramic bowls and vases created by a local artist, along with hanging macramé plant holders in various shapes and sizes. Altogether, a lovely studio to visit.

Along the front of John and Helen’s home are flower beds of roses, tulips, pansies and violas laid out. There were large proteas in full bloom among the garden under planted with small shrubs and new roses.

Along the back of the home a long row of Mitchelldean Maples have been planted to stop the dust from the road in summer and these will look amazing in autumn with their bright orange/red leaves. Also planted was a hedge of Viburnum in full bloom and more beds with roses. Along the northern side of the home is a row of Gleditsia and beside the home a row of pink camellias.

Our next Garden Club visit will be to the garden of Kim and Carol Lloyd who live on 23 Barron Court in Boyup Brook. We will meet at the Boyup Brook Town Hall car park at 1:30pm on Tuesday September 10. Carpools will be available to all who wish to ride-share. Please bring a cup and a chair.

Any enquiries please phone Mrs Yvonne Hales on 0427 772 718. Garden lovers are welcome to join us.

And that’s your Bloomin’ lot.

WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON AT YOUR CRC...

Active August, Amazing August, I think that is how you could describe the past month at the Community Resource Centre. There has been a diverse range of events and activities occurring.

The E-Waste dismantling workshop was fascinating as participants discovered how much can actually be recovered from the insides of a computer monitor, printer, computer tower and television. A very big thank you to Adrian Price for demonstrating this process.

The recycling hub saw another two large RedCycle bags of soft plastics taken to Bunbury and three boxes of Nespresso Coffee pods sent off. Our collection of plastic bottle tops are being sorted into colours in preparation for some exciting art projects.

August also saw the commencement of the online Noongar Language and Culture course which has received excellent support.

The SEA (Seniors Exercise and Activity) program continues to attract strong attendance numbers. With activities changing every week, the participants are always engaged with a variety of exercises and games.

Business Advisory South West and Peel delivered an Instagram workshop which provided businesses with some very useful tips in creating content and targeting their audience with their brand.

The CRC’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 23 at 5pm at the CRC. As per our rotation system of committee members, there will be some vacancies for one or two year terms. A riot of colour will be coming to Boyup Brook on Sunday October 20 in a community event not to be missed, as the Boyup Brook District High School and St Mary’s Primary School work together to deliver a fundraising event that is sweeping the world.

The schools are coordinating a fundraising Colour Run, a phenomenon which involves participants being doused from head to toe in different coloured non-toxic powder as they run a set course.

Participants wear white at the starting line and finish the race plastered in colour.

Mixing fun and exercise, the event will help raise funds for both schools and create a fantastic opportunity for the whole community to get involved.

“The Colour Runs are a really fun and exciting way to raise funds for our schools, and it is a wonderful opportunity for both schools to work together to make it a really great event”, said enthused St Mary’s P&F President Lizzie Twigg.

Students will be encouraged to register for the race and raise individual sponsorship.

Prize packs are given for reaching certain levels of sponsorship, rewarding the kids for their hard work.

Participants then run the set course and enjoy the fun.

Schools Combine for Colour Run Volunteers will be scattered through the course to douse runners in an explosion of colour.

Boyup Brook District High School P&C President Georgia Wallace said, “We are looking forward to this very colourful, fun community event with opportunities for all ages to join in and participate”!

Sustainable Housing Day is on September 15, and provides a great opportunity to check in with your own sustainable household practices. Are you on the right track to help the environment? Are you saving money on your household bills in the process?

SHD is a day when you are invited into the homes of some of the most sustainable houses in Australia. These homes are designed, built or modified to be more eco-friendly. In Western Australia there are 33 houses registered for the public to tour in 2019; from Kendenup to Margaret River, to North Beach and Karrinyup.

If you would like to attend one of the homes you can register to do this by signing up on the SHD website. You can also view the houses on the website and read about what makes them so progressively environmental.

Alternatively, there are ways to be more sustainable in your home right now without designing a new property from scratch, or making huge modifications to your existing residence. Read on for some small changes you can make today to help the environment and save you money in the process:

Install a water tank to water your garden. Any water you collect for free, is saving on your bills and means you are less reliant on the mains water. Invest in an eco-kettle and only boil as much water as needed to make your cuppa. Boiling a litre of water can use as much energy as powering your fridge for 6 hours a day! An eco-kettle reduces CO2 emissions, and saves a lot on energy costs. Only boiling what is needed is also a time and energy saver.

Compost your food waste. When food waste goes to landfill it can release methane, a greenhouse gas. Composting at home not only helps to stop global warming, but it will give you organic and free fertiliser for your garden. Become a master at recycling. The CRC can help with this, taking items that the kerbside pick-up does not, such as bottle lids, household batteries, old mobile phones, Nespresso coffee pods, bread tags and soft plastics. You can drop them off to the CRC at any time by placing your recyclables in the containers left available on the front verandah. Up cycle old clothes or furniture instead of buying new. Could those ripped jeans be turned into a pair of summer shorts? Or perhaps that old towel might still make a nice face cloth or cleaning rags. Take time to imagine what else you could make from items you already own. Adjust heating/cooling by 1 degree. It might not seem like much, but adjusting your heating/cooling systems by just 1 degree can save 5-10% of energy. Choose native and local plants for your garden. This is a low maintenance option and will save you on water costs when establishing your garden. Native plants also attract native birds, butterflies and lizards. Install curtains or insulated blinds. As they are thicker they are better insulators for the cold and heat. Change your light bulbs to energy efficient globes. The initial cost may be dearer, but they last longer, they can be brighter and most importantly they use less energy which is a win for the environment and lowers your bills.

Stay Smart Online

Visit www.staysmartonline.gov.au to keep your self, your business and your information safe

Socialising Online

Online forums and social media sites are great for keeping in touch with friends and family, but be careful about what information you put online and who you allow to see it.

Tip: Don’t accept friend requests or invitations from people you don’t know – you could be making yourself and your friends more vulnerable to scammers.

Use social media safely Unfortunately not everyone is as nice as they first appear online and there are people who use social media to embarrass, harass or attack others, and steal personal information and identities. Certain types of scams are also more prevalent on social media platforms – such as dating and romance scams and fake online retailers.

Protect yourself when using social media Following a few rules and learning about how your social media platform handles and displays your information can help reduce risk when socialising online.

Take the time to read and understand the social network

site’s terms and conditions and privacy policy.

Familiarise yourself with the site’s privacy and security

settings – make sure you’re only sharing your information with the people you want to share it with.

Protect your social media accounts with strong passwords.

Don't use social networking sites that do not offer

any privacy settings or that allow users to contact each other anonymously.

Think before you post. Once information is online is it

almost impossible to remove. If unsure, ask yourself – would I be OK if this image or information was on the news or seen by my employer? If not, perhaps think again. Use the same caution with clicking on advertisements and online shopping on social media platforms that you do elsewhere. Just because a post appears in your feed and has been ‘suggested for you’ doesn’t mean the retailer is legitimate.

Be particularly careful with information that could

compromise the security of you and others, including:

dates of birth

addresses

information about your daily routine

holiday plans

your children's schools

photos of you or your family and friends - and always seek permission before posting a picture of someone else. .

This information can be used by criminals to steal your identity or plan criminal activity – like robbing your home when you are away.

Important: Be especially careful what you say about others online. Posting rude, offensive or derogatory comments about another person or business can have legal consequences.

Also be aware that many companies check job applicant’s online profiles. You might not want the photos and information you share with your friends to be seen by a prospective employer!

Stay Smart Online Week 2019 This year, Stay Smart Online Week will run from 7-13 October

We were told, that as long as he didn’t object to the Catholic faith and given the evidence of his acceptance, he could receive the last rites. The last rites are an immense outpouring of God’s mercy towards us. They absolve someone from all of their sins. From original sin, which we are given at conception, all the way through to every venial and mortal sin we have ever committed. Every sin which has darkened our soul and cut us off from the grace of God. So, two days later, when Dad’s soul separated from his body, it was as white as snow. It was pure and all it had was love for God, its creator. Dad was able to enjoy the greatest kind of death. A death filled with love and peace and comfort that came straight from Heaven.

So, as we celebrate this mass today, firstly it is a celebration and thanksgiving for Dad’s life. Secondly, it is a celebration of God’s love and mercy for us. Not just for Dad, but for every one of us gathered here. And thirdly, it is a celebration that we personally know a saint in Heaven. Someone who can help to guide and protect us, someone that we can call on in our time of need. Our own personal saint, who will intercede for us before the throne of God. Therefore, as we celebrate this memorial mass for Dad, do just that. Ask him to intercede for you, and ask him to help you have your own bud of faith. A bud that may bloom and bear fruit. A bud that will bring joy that can’t be filled by anything except the love of God. A joy that can’t be appeased by entertainment, sport or people. That void, that needs to be filled, can only be filled by the love of God. Dad was so lucky to fully realise this while still alive. He was so lucky he could die in such peace and so lucky to die surrounded by angels and saints.

So, in our grief, let us remember that it is a selfish grief. Dad has entered eternal joy and is looking down upon us. It is we who will miss him and yearn for his presence. The joy we show in our grief is a remembrance of the joy he now possesses. We mourn our loss but celebrate his salvation.”

Ally Kinsman (Staniforth-Smith) made the following speech at the beginning of Finn Staniforth-Smith’s memorial Mass. Many people who were there were unable to hear the speech, due to the numbers that attended exceeding the size of the church, and have asked for a copy of it, therefore we have made it available here for all who wish to read it.

“Welcome everyone to the memorial mass for Finn Staniforth-Smith.

Most of you may be wondering why this is being celebrated in the Catholic Church and assume that it is because of Anne’s faith. But, surprisingly, we are here because of Finn’s faith. This might seem odd to many of you, but we have joked over the last week that Finn was a closet believer. Around four or five years ago, Dad came home from a shoot at Cherry Tree and told mum that he had told a number of people that one day he may give up drinking and find God – how prophetic these words now seem looking back on the last three months of Dad’s life.

Through the grace of God and the blessing of this sickness, Dad was able to choose to let that faith bud and therefore bloom which has culminated in this funeral mass today. I say blessing because God will go to any extreme to bring you back to him, short of taking away your free will. So, if this sickness is the extreme measure Dad needed, then it is truly a blessing.

Dad’s desire for this mass was expressed to a childhood mate in the last week of his life and now that he is in Heaven, he definitely knows that this is all that we have desired for him – that he be reconciled to God the Father. Dad wrote us all letters and in his one to Mum, he thanked her for her witness to the faith over their 38 years of marriage and for having such a strong faith. After stealing a pair of her Rosary Beads, he also told her that when he was alone during the day and needed to feel strength and comfort, he would hold onto those beads and that’s where he would find solace. Over the last month of Dad’s illness he was open to prayer, open to information about the faith, open to listening in on rosaries in the car when driving to appointments. He didn’t shun or object to anything.

Dad was baptized church of England, and this baptism is recognized by the Catholic Church. After Dad’s stroke on the Wednesday before he died, we called Fr and explained to him the state Dad was now in and that he was baptized. We asked, what could the Catholic Church do? What could it offer him?

Electoral Boundary Changes

Further to the proposed electoral boundary changes

outlined in “Proposed Boundaries by District and Region’

released in July, I am pleased to see the electorate of

Warren-Blackwood largely remains as is, with the welcome

addition of Balingup and surrounds. Final boundaries will

be confirmed after a period of feedback; reporting no later

than 25th November 2019.

Voluntary Assisted Dying Legislation The Voluntary Assisted Dying Legislation is currently before

Parliament and as your representative, I take my

involvement with the debate very seriously. I have

listened to many in my electorate and the overwhelming

feedback is to support the legislation which I now do in-

principal. As a legislator my responsibility is to ensure the

details must be robust and include safeguards at all levels.

We need to provide options for those who are seriously ill

and in pain while at the same time protecting vulnerable

people.

Busselton Margaret River Airport Tourism is an important industry sector to our regional

communities and I am disappointed the State Government

is dragging its feet on announcing funding for the upgraded

terminal. I commend the City of Busselton on their

commitment to continue to negotiate with Jetstar to offer

their service routes from the airport. Securing this carrier

has the capacity to make dramatic change in increasing the

tourism market and the State Government is now well

overdue in showing their hand.

Bushfire Damage and Recovery I have been very concerned to learn of examples whereby

innocent people and their property have been adversely

affected by fires under the responsibility of the

Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions,

which was acting on behalf of the Forest Products

Commission. It is totally unacceptable that the State

Government can walk away from repairing the damage

they have caused through their actions leaving farmers

without fences and infrastructure through no fault of their

own. I will be lobbying the State Government to address

what appears to be a significant policy failure which sees

innocent people worse off after active burning events.

Direction for Our Times

We continue our cycle of monthly messages for 2019 with the message from August 1, 2011 for our prayer groups and personal reflection.

August 1, 2011

Jesus

Dear apostles, you are friends of my heart. As such, please be patient with me as I bring you along in holiness. Would you like to be holier? Perhaps you identify my teachings as good, but you feel frustrated because you see that you fall short on some days. This is when you must be truly patient and trust that I am bringing you along as quickly as needed. Remember that you may see very little progress on some days, but your decision to remain with me in the process of becoming holier creates a disposition for Heaven that keeps the light where it should be, that is, on the need to examine yourself for failure instead of examining others. How easy it is to see the flaws of another. How much more difficult it is to identify which pain in you creates the disposition for repeating a mistake, perhaps again and again. Yes, patience is necessary, both with oneself and with others. I, Jesus, am patient with you. You must be patient with yourself. Next, you must be patient with others. Do not be distracted by events around you. Do not be drawn into thinking that any events should allow you to take your eyes off of the process of becoming holier. No, dear apostles. I speak gravely when I say to you that you must concentrate seriously on becoming holier. Your holiness and your commitment to holiness is a crucial part of my plan to bring comfort to others. Allow me to see to the world. If you see daily to the condition of your soul and if you love others, you will have fulfilled my plan for you. Rejoice. You are committed to me and I am eternally committed to you.

A Father’s Prayer The following prayer was written by General Douglas MacArthur, a hero of World War II, on behalf of his son whom he loved dearly.

If you’re a parent you may want to use it as the basis for your own prayers for your children:

‘Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be; a son who will know You… Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.

Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clean, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the lessons of the past.

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humour, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength. Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, “I have not lived in vain.”’

The Boyup Bandits have every chance of making the finals, but it will be reliant on a win against the top team Marist and other results going their way. Cricket Talent Identified

After only playing a few seasons of cricket, 12 year old Reagan Bancroft has been selected for a specialist school in Perth for her bowling abilities. Belridge Secondary College has offered Reagan a place in their Years 7-12 Cricket Academy program, along with only one other girl, and approximately forty boys. This selection came after she tried out at the WACA earlier this year.

Reagan (pictured below) started to play cricket at the age of 9, but after she was teased for playing a sport dominated by boys, she decided to take a break. Thankfully, with role models such as female cricketing champion Ellyse Perry to look up to, and Reagan’s own growing resilience, she picked the sport back up at the age of 11.

When asked what she loves about cricket she said “Because everyone can play as a team and I can learn a range of skills when I either bowl, bat or field.” Reagan has proved to be an all-rounder of the game, but it is her medium paced bowling, with excellent accuracy that caught the eye of the cricket academy selectors.

Whilst it is uncertain as to whether Reagan will be attending Belridge at this stage, there are other avenues that her parents Ty and Emma Bancroft are considering, “If she doesn’t attend for Year 7 we know that she will still have many opportunities to excel in this field. It will mean a lot more travelling but we are used to that now.”

Understandably the Bancroft’s are very proud of their daughter and happily transport her to her sporting commitments. During the winter season, they travel to Bridgetown twice a week where she plays netball for the junior association and the under 12s development team. On a Friday night, it is a 2.5 hour round trip to Bunbury for her to play a 45 minute match of indoor cricket, with all girl team Pitch Perfect. The sacrifices are more than worth it for parents Ty and Emma; “We have the opportunity to give Reagan a real chance at following her dreams, so we will do it.”

In the summer time Reagan plays locally for the Boyup Brook Cricket Club under 14s team and her parents have high praise for the Club and the opportunities it provides to its junior members. They firmly believe kids living regionally are not at a disadvantage in terms of quality coaching and the facilities available. Looking at Reagan’s growing sporting prowess it is easy to see the excellent proof of this. Above: Reagan Bancroft

Roos News

Our Football Season’s Wrap Its 9am on a cool Saturday morning at the Boyup Brook Football and Hockey ovals and I see, what must be 100 or more, kids playing both sports. There are screams and yells of excitement coming from both parents and players, pats on back and handshakes when the final siren sounds. If this is not an educational life-skill teaching lesson, I will ride to town on a one-wheeled bike! But the day is not over, with two more football games to be played.

There are another 80 adults running around competing, releasing endorphins and coming away feeling great and maybe just a little sore. Then there’s our supporters who watch on their friends, or love ones, or parents they also are getting mentally stimulated.

5pm in the club rooms, Berty has the fire on and the refreshments chilled. Players and supporters come together to reflect on the day’s proceedings. There are kids running around in a joyful and safe atmosphere. As we draw down to the last two tickets left in our $5,000 raffle, the moment is tense, could it be Therese and Tara or Annabelle? The ticket is drawn and the winner of the $5,000 goes to Annabelle Chilwell!

That is country sport at its best!

As our season comes to an end, I would like to thank ALL of our members and sponsors who have given their support to our club. In a season that has been trying on the win/loss record, it’s obvious our supporters are here for the long run.

Your committee job now is to reflect on the season just gone and start to plan for next year. The future of our club relies on people power as well as a couple of dollars to run.

I ENCOURAGE (note the word encourage has courage in it, sometimes that is what is required) people to come forward to express an interest on the future and direction of our club.

Important dates to remember are our end of year wind up which is the 28th September and our AGM will be held towards the end of the year (to be advised).

Thanks again to everyone who has supported our club in some way. Until the next time we meet.
