Safeguard Yourself Against Scams Every year, Baby Boomers across the U.S. fall subject to a variety of financial scams. In fact, these crimes, affecting hundreds of thou-sands yearly, have now become the leading crime of the century.

Some common scams employ the use of home repair solicitation, sweepstakes, and identity theft. Criminals behind home repair scams often go door to door to case out potential robbery locations or overcharge for services that are never done or completed poorly. Sweepstake scams often involve criminals asking victims to with-draw money for “good faith” or tax purposes. Lastly, identity theft scams consist of individuals calling and posing as bank, IRS, Medi-

care, etc., employees asking for credit card or other personal infor-mation.

So, to prevent yourself from falling prey, never hire anyone without proper licensing or references, never send money to un-known sources, and never entrust personal information to calls that are not personally initiated. Also, if you ever encounter an in-dividual or situation that seems suspicious, don’t hesitate to call the FINRA Securities Helpline (844-57-HELPS or 844-574-3577) to receive help from knowledgeable advisors.

An Individual Retire-ment Account or “IRA” is a tax-deferred retirement account for an individual that permits the owner to set aside money each year, with earnings tax-deferred until withdrawals begin at age 59 ½ or later. Traditional IRAs can earn interest or dividends as well as capital gains that are not subject to tax while still in the account. Federal and State taxes are withheld upon withdrawal of all or any part of the funds. Alternatively, contributions to Roth IRAs are taxed at the beginning and grow tax free provided certain condi-tions are met.

OECU has competitive IRA rates - check them out at oecu.com/rates.

OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATEJennifer Herron, OECU Moore Branch Manager, has been named Oklahoma Educators Credit Union’s Outstand-ing Associate for the fourth quarter of 2015.

The Outstanding Associate award is given to a credit union employee who has performed above and beyond nor-mal expectations.

“Jennifer leads a highly productive team, gives great member service, con-tinually strives for excellence in all areas and finds solutions rather than finding excuses,” Trent Vaughn, OECU Sr Vice President of Lending and Member Services said.

Herron has been an OECU team member since 2007 and has 33 years of banking experience. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, she moved to Oklahoma in 2007.

“The best part of my job is helping our members and families with their financial matters,” she said. “I feel lucky that I am able to travel to schools providing lunches for teachers and letting them know how much we appreciate them.”

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with the best husband ever, their 7 grandkids and cooking.
