Auto Detail Learn how to get that new car finish back! Winter will be here soon, so get your car ready in this class. Working in our climate controlled garage, students will learn how to safely use a commercial buffer, in addition to the various compounds and cleaners. This is a hands-on class - a real team effort! Build a Snare Drum In this class we will be building stave snare drums. Since wood grain runs vertically in stave drums, there is a better transfer of resonance between top and bottom heads, giving these drums amazing tone, brilliance and body. Segments of acrylic between wood, allows internal LED lighting for a stunning looking instrument. Wood is included in this class, but students pay for hardware ($50-$200 per drum.) Prerequisites: None

Appliance Troubleshooting I This introductory class will teach students how to operate and maintain their home appliances such as washers, dryers, ranges, microwaves and refrigerators. Expect a hands-on class where students will learn to break down, troubleshoot and repair a variety of appliances. Audio Recording If you are interested in basic recording at home, this class will get you ready. We will be recording an entire multi-instrument band live, so you'll learn how to place microphones, patch through mic preamps and mixing boards to converters and to laptops. Signal processors will be described and demonstrated. If you are a musician in a band, this will improve your sound. If you are an audiophile, learning acoustics and speaker placement will improve your home listening experience. Or if you have ever wanted to have your singing recorded, here’s your chance. Bring your laptop to class. Dale studied music theory and composition while playing with Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Billy Corgan. He toured the United States and Europe supporting Sublime, then recorded full time for 10 years. Dale has recorded 160 bands and currently performs with two bands. Build Your Own Cigar Box Instrument String instruments made from cigar boxes have a tradition dating back over 150 years. A wooden cigar box makes a fine resonating chamber for instruments such as ukuleles, mandolins, small guitars, dulcimers, withers, and even violins. In this course you will learn to build a functional and attractive acoustic cigar-box instrument. Great for playing and it will also make a unique holiday gift. Prerequisites: None Saturdays- December 5 to December 19 9am-1pm or 2:30pm-6:30pm Location: JobLink Instructor: Dave Dolak Building a Kitchen Cart In this class students will learn the skills needed to build a small kitchen cart or island that can be used as a coffee bar or for storage of small kitchen appliances. You may want an island with a tile countertop - you'll also learn how to tile in this class. Participants can build their own small island or cart - it could be ready for the holidays! Monday– September 21 9am-10:30am or 3pm-4:30pm Location: JobLink Instructor: Lee Ann Bultema Installing an Electric Vehicle Charging Station This course will be beneficial to anyone considering the ownership of an electrical vehicle or hybrid vehicle now or in the future. It will be a discussion class and an actual hands-on installation of a E/V charging station. Tasks will include working with hand tools and devices that will be required to accomplish a successful installation of a working E/V charging outlet. Installing Wood Floors In this class learn to install different types of floors - hardwood, Pergo flooring, and more. You will learn how select materials, how to find bargains, how to calculate costs, layout procedures, etc. This is a hands-on class so everyone will have an opportunity to get some practice in installation. Prerequisites: None Thursdays– November 12 to December 10 (No Class November 26) 9am-12pm or 3:30pm-6:30pm Location: JobLink Instructor: Nick Nash Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair Take this class to learn how to change your oil, tune up your motorcycle, and perform costly repairs yourself. We will also be modifying cycles. Fix a bike that won't start and run, and keep your motorcycle in excellent condition. Get your bike ready for winter - winterize it in this class! MTE Prep This 14-week course will introduce students to topics related to industrial electrical maintenance and troubleshooting: AC/DC circuits and motors, print reading, analog and digital circuits, test equipment, computers, PLC's, DC crane control, power distribution, power supplies, transformers, instrumentation, hydraulics, and HVAC. This course is for people who want to take the Ramsay test or just to get an understanding of MTE principles. Prerequisites: None Thursdays– August 27 to December 3 (No Class November 26) 9am-12pm or 3:30pm-6:30pm Location: JobLink Instructor: Joe Hynek MTM Prep This course will briefly touch on such procedures as welding, hydraulics, pump, piping, print reading, machinery, tools, and more. 2014 NEC Code Course This one-day class covers the most significant electrical code changes in the most up-to-date code book, the 2014 National Electric Code book. Students will receive that version of the code book, and also learn the top 20 things to know about this newest version of the code book. Keep yourself current and take this class! Open Lab for Guitar, Bass, and String Instrument Maintenance and Repair Keeping ones guitar, bass, or other string instrument in top playing condition is important to any musician. In this course you will learn the basics of guitar/string instrument maintenance and set-up including fret leveling and re-crowning, adjusting the neck/fingerboard, balancing string intonation, and setting string action. Also, you will learn basic repair techniques including fixing cracks and refinishing. Bring in your own instrument for a tune-up. Also, this can be used as open lab time for those who are working to complete their guitar from earlier workshops. Prerequisites: None Saturdays– November 7 to November 21 9am-1pm or 2:30pm-6:30pm Location: JobLink Instructor: Dave Dolak

Residential Wiring Learn safe wiring procedures required by the National Electric Code and local codes. This class will consist of both discussion and hands-on electrical wiring practices. Hands-on: Wiring of switches, receptacles and lighting fixtures. Discussion: Safe residential wiring practices, review of unsafe conditions such as where GFCIs are required, smoke detectors and use of temporary wiring practices that create a hazard. Each participant receives a book on the topic. Prerequisites: None

JobLink has had a long tradition of service learning. We organize learning opportunities for our steelworker students. This year we are planting a garden full of meaning—it is helping to beautify the neighborhood, commemorates our 25th anniversary and will be a certified Monarch

waystation, a place for Monarchs to feed. Look for it on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Guthrie. Project under the guidance of instructors Bruce and Lee Ann Bultema, with consultant Susan MiHalo of the Nature Conservancy and donation from The Foundations of East Chicago.

Burglar Alarm Systems This six-week course introduces the student to the procedures for installing, programming and the design of burglar alarm systems. Students will also be introduced to the lucrative business of starting an alarm system business. Alarm systems may be wired to dial up to two cell phone numbers thus never require a monthly monitoring fee. Students are encouraged to design and install alarm systems on their own properties. Small Engine 1 Are you frustrated by that lawnmower that seems to start only when it wants to? How about the tractor that stops running after twenty minutes? The repairs necessary may involve a costly repair bill and several weeks without your equipment. Why not take charge and perform the repairs yourself? In this class, topics include basic engine theory, maintenance, and troubleshooting for both two and four stroke engines. Students will be taking apart engines in class. Replace your annuals with a showstopper container designed with fragrant greens, cones, branches and a colorful big bow. This pot will be beautiful until spring. Woodshop Open Lab This class offers students time to finish projects from previous semesters, or the ability to use JobLink’s woodshop for a specific project. JobLink’s woodshop is state of the art, including all major tools: two saw-stop table saws, two band saws, 36” drum sander, 20” planer, 12” joiner, and all the rest of tools and supplies you will need. In this class, we'll define what 3D printing is, why it's gotten so much attention as of late and what its potential could be. Build My Computer When you build your own personal computer, you will work with your instructor to select each component, based on your specifications of performance, style, capacity and budget. Hand building a computer helps teach the fundamentals of how a computer works and because you built it, you will be better prepared to maintain your new computer. C++ Programming for Beginners This is a fast-paced introductory course to the C++ programming language. It is intended for those with little or no programming background. Laptop Computers A to Z Students will learn to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair and upgrade laptops. These special computers require different techniques than desktop computers to be successfully repaired. You will fix broken screens, bad drives, dead batteries, etc. We can help you upgrade your old XP or Vista based laptop to Windows 7 or 8.1 using a rocket fast SSD (Solid State Hard Drive). Also covered will be the techniques used by manufacturers to design and construct a modern laptop. 100% hands-on lab work! Students do not need a laptop to take this course. Learn to Fly a Quadcopter Quadcopters (or drones) have been around for many years. Virus Protection Workshop With hundreds of new computer viruses every month, keeping anti-virus software up-to-date has never been so important. Despite this, the average computer user is usually unaware their workstation has been infected until they start to suffer the consequences of an attack from a virus, worm or Trojan horse. Customized Courses Each participant is limited to $2,000 annually for courses in this category. These are the classes created by the learning centers specifically for steelworkers. Nearly all of the classes in this

category are advertised in our catalogs.

Tuition Assistance Program The Tuition Assistance Program allows steelworkers to attend colleges and schools of their own choice as

long as the schools are accredited institutions of post-secondary education or are recognized by a

state board of vocational education. The benefit will pay $1,800 in tuition assistance.

Issuance 14 Students who have an educational and career goal in mind and need more than $1,800 yearly to achieve

those goals should apply for Issuance 14. If the student has a specific goal in mind, they have to

create an educational development plan and apply for the combination of these funds. If approved, a

steelworker may be eligible for up to $3,800 yearly.

Issuance 15 The ICD policy “Issuance 15” allows retirees

access to tuition assistance if: That retiree has begun a career goal using TAP, has retired within the last 12

months, and if there is money available from the previous year’s tuition

assistance budget.

Customized Courses Each participant is limited to $2,000 annually for courses in this category. These are the classes created by the learning centers specifically for steelworkers. Nearly all of the classes in this

category are advertised in our catalogs.

Tuition Assistance Program The Tuition Assistance Program allows

steelworkers to attend colleges and schools of their own choice as long as the schools are

accredited institutions of post-secondary education or are recognized by a state board of

vocational education. The benefit will pay $1,800 in tuition assistance.

Issuance 14 Students who have an educational and career

goal in mind and need more than $1,800 yearly to achieve those goals should apply for Issuance

14. If the student has a specific goal in mind, they have to create an educational development plan and apply for the combination of these funds. If

approved, a steelworker may be eligible for up to $3,800 yearly.

Issuance 15 The ICD policy “Issuance 15” allows retirees

access to tuition assistance if: That retiree has begun a career goal using TAP, has retired within

the last 12 months, and if there is money available from the previous year’s tuition

assistance budget.
