    - Conclusions

    Localisation of the boat

The boat is located in the Cascais Marina, pontoon M, all the running rigging is on the deck, not safe.

    Facts:

The boat Kalonig 2 took part of the Mini Transat Race between Sada ( Spain) and Pointe à Pitre (Guadeloupe) .The race start is given the 13th of November 2013 .Wind conditions are strong in this first night 30kts to 40 kts of wind . The 14th of December, morning at approx 04 or 05 AM UTC the boat cap sized. Ian Lipinski the skipper was inside and safe. After 50-60 minutes, the mast broke at the level of the roof and the boat came back in the right position. Full of water, and in a difficult situation with strong conditions, the skipper decided to active the EPIRB beacon and gave a Mayday on the VHF. At approx 08 h UTC, the cargo ship Mazury registered in Nassau Bahamas came alongside Kalonig 2 and at 8h35 UTC Ian Lipinski was saved on board.

The 21st of November, the boat was salvaged and towed back to Cascais by Adrien Hardy friend of Ian

    Lipinski.

Sea report was sent to the insurers the 15th

    Damages on Kalonig

    A) Hull & Deck bonding

    1) Starboard

On the starboard hull, up to the water line, the hull surface (gel coat) is very damaged due to the contact with the cargo ship Masury. A tapping test with a light hammer does not show evidence of any delamination.

The shape of the hull is not damaged. Only the surface and fairing of the hull is degraded. At the corner of the aft transom, under the pulpit the hull is fractured on approx 30 cm and delaminated but can be repaired... On the bonding between the hull and deck, at approx 1 meter of the bow, we find a crack with delamination approx 20 cm long. At the level of the first stanchion on the bonding, second crack with small délamination and at the second stanchion from the bow we can see some stress cracks. Inside of the boat we haven’t find except the visual evidence, any delamination or cracks on frames, stringers flanges or free board of the hull.

Surface of the hull is damaged, not too deep, due to the contact with the Cargo Ship

  • 6

Delamination of the bonding in stanchion area is limited

    2) Portside

On the portside hull, the damages are less important than on starboard, the shape of the hull is in good condition, the surface fairing is damaged in the front part, due to the sails, and probably the rigging when it broke. The bonding between the hull and deck is damaged at the level of the first stanchion which is snatched. At the level of the aft transom, we find a small impact 5 cm x 5cm. inside, except the evidence of damages areas, no delamination or cracks were found.

    B) Deck & roof damages

On the deck, two toe pads are destroyed on approx 80 cm each one on starboard, one on port side .The two aft pulpits are sunk in the deck, two stanchions also on each side, but those are in a very restricted area. A light tapping on the deck do not show any evidence of delamination or damage. Pulpits and stanchions must be changed or repaired .On the roof on portside just on the aft part of the mast, a 20 x20 cm area is delaminated, probably due to a rig impact . The cockpit and deck sound firm underfoot and seem not damaged.
