Program overview New Mexico Athletics has always been the butt of jokes and misconceptions. (I.e., “Do I need a passport to come to New Mexico?”) However, Lobo Soccer has changed some of the associations with New Mexico; national soccer power.

With a rich history that now reaches into three decades, the men’s soccer program at the University of New Mexico has arrived on the national scene in college soccer. Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein took over the program in 2002, and in the following decade and a half, he’s turned Lobo Soccer into a perennial NCAA Tournament team. Trips to the postseason tournament are nearly automatic in Albuquerque to the tune of eleven appearances in sixteen seasons.

The Lobos don’t just go to the NCAA Tournament; they advance. The Lobos have advanced to the Sweet 16 five times since 2004, which includes trips to the Final Four in 2013 and 2005 and the national championship in 2005. The 2011, 2012 and 2013 squads all advanced to the Sweet 16, which made UNM one of only three programs in the nation to achieve that feat. It’s momentum that propels the program in various directions.

The Cherry & Silver became one of only four programs in the country to have four players selected in a MLS draft in one year in 2013. Twenty Lobos have been selected in the MLS Draft since 2006, and Blake Smith became the highest-drafted Lobo ever when he was selected eighth overall by the Montreal Impact in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Lobo standout Niko Hansen followed as the second-highest drafted Lobo as he was selected ninth overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft by Columbus Crew SC.

As impressive as the on-the-field success may be, Coach Fishbein’s Lobos are just as impressive away from it. The program’s academic résumé is among the best in the nation. The team has earned 15 NSCAA Team Academic Awards in 16 seasons, and Lobos have received the NSCAA Scholar All-American award on nineteen different occasions. Lobo Soccer has had players named academic all-american on 27 occasions, including 22 in Coach Fishbein’s tenure. In the Spring semester of the 2014-15 academic year, Coach Fishbein and company set the program record for highest team GPA in a semester with a 3.56.

It’s that rich history and tradition that has got the ball rolling for Lobo Soccer in Albuquerque. The program has carried that momentum over as a Conference USA member as New Mexico was the regular-season C-USA champion in its first year in the conference in 2013 before claiming the programs’ first ever C-USA Tournament Championship in 2016.

Blake Smith takes a pass in the 2012 Sweet 16 match at the University of Connecticut.

Levi Rossi was a two-time Academic All-American in 2011 and 2012 and a crowd favorite at UNM.

the 2005 season - the one above them all

Late in the fall semester in 2005, the entire city of Albuquerque, N.M., was focused on Lobo athletics. Fans were scrambling for tickets only to discover the game was sold out days in advance. They were trying to find a seat in packed sports bars throughout town to watch their team on the big screen, but every establishment with a television was filled to capacity. This was a new occurrence for the Duke city, however, this wasn’t happening for football or basketball. This time it was the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team that had captured the hearts and minds of Lobo fans. Led by a group of local players, the Lobo soccer team was in the middle of one of the greatest postseason runs in school history. Fans packed the UNM Soccer Complex for three thrilling overtime wins on the way to the first appearance in the College Cup. New Mexico advanced to the national championship game, and despite falling to Maryland in the finals, had one of the most exciting seasons Lobo fans had ever seen. With a trip to the College Cup on the line, the buzz around town was centered on the soccer team. The game sold out more than a day in advance as 5,600 fans packed into the UNM Soccer Complex. Another estimated 1,000 fans watched the game from outside the stadium in the parking lot. This game also went into overtime and again it was the magic provided by senior Jeff Rowland that saved the day. Senior Ben Ashwill sent in a cross in the 94th minute that Rowland put home for the win. Fans stormed the field and joined in the celebration as the Lobos headed to the College Cup in Cary, N.C.

The Lobos went on to defeat Clemson 2-1 in the College Cup semifinals before falling to No. 1 Maryland 1-0 in the finals. Despite not bringing home a national title, New Mexico still had one of the greatest seasons in Lobo athletics history. Rowland earned consensus All-American honors for the second time and was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy. Senior Lance Watson and junior Andrew Boyens also received All-American recognition.

NotesUNM’s first national ranking came on October 21, 1992 under head coach Klaus Weber. The Lobos were 11-2-1 and had won nine consecutive match-es at the time.

New Mexico first cracked the top-10 on Sept. 30, 2004, following a 1-0 double-overtime win against No. 1 Indiana at the UNM Soccer Complex.

The Lobos were ranked No. 1 for the first time on Nov. 14, 2004, in the Soccer America final regular season top-25.

UNM held the consensus No. 1 spot in all three polls for four weeks in 2011. It was the second time in program history they topped all polls. (The other being in 2005.)unm as a ranked teamOverall Record: 102-47-17Home: 64-14-9Away: 36-27-8Neutral: 2-6-0

Honors & AccoladesMAC Hermann trophy

Lobo forward Jeff Rowland had a storybook career in his four years at UNM. He went from an non-recruited walk-on, to setting the school record for points in a season (45) as a junior, to becoming the first Lobo considered for the MAC - Hermann Trophy. After scoring 16 goals and four assists in 2005, he was one of three finalists for college soccer’s top award, along with Indiana’s Brian Plotkin and eventual winner, Jason Garey of Maryland.

Andrew Boyens came to UNM in 2004 as a wirey defender from New Zealand, looking to make a name for himself in college soccer. Over the next two years, he became one of the top defenders in the country and helped put Lobo soccer on the national map. He was a two-time All-American and, in 2006, was one of the 15 semifinalists for the MAC-Hermann Trophy. Boyens was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto F.C.

Devon Sandoval made the most of his senior season finishing in the top ten in the NCAA with 15 goals as well as seven assists. He was a NSCAA and a CollegeSoccerNews All-American as well as a three-time MPSF Player of the Week. His hat trick against UNLV was the first in seven years, and his eight points in the match was the third most in conference history. He was selected 29th overall by Real Salt Lake in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.

8Only one jersey number in the 30-year history of the New Mex-ico soccer program has ever been retired. David Robertson’s number 8 will never be worn again. Robertson, who played from 1984 to 1986, was UNM’s all-time leading scorer until 1994 when his records of 30 goals and 88 points were surpassed by Mike Strati. Robertson is currently fourth in career points (88), goals scored (34) and assists (20) on UNM’s all-time list.

Kyle Venter’s senior season was the perfect cap to perhaps the most-decorated career in program history. Venter was a semifi-nalist for the MAC Hermann Award after taking home Conference USA MVP and Defensive Player of the Year honors. The center back also became the program’s first-ever three-time All-Ameri-can while becoming UNM’s all-time leader in minutes played and starts. He helped propel the Lobos to the NCAA College Cup in 2013 in Philadelphia.
