1 About this documentThis document describes how to commission Nokia Indoor LocationMeasurement Unit (LMU) with Nokia LMU Manager SW, and providesinstructions on how to use Nokia LMU Manager’s Commissioning Wizard.

2 Pre-commissioning procedures andrequirements

This chapter describes the tasks that must be completed before the commissioningis started and the equipment needed in the commissioning procedure.

2.1 Checking the LMU antennas and feeder cables

Prior to starting the commissioning procedure, check that the LMU GPS andLMU GSM RX antennas are correctly installed (refer to Antenna Requirements).

Check also the delay/length and attenuation of the LMU GPS and LMU GSM RXantenna cables with a Cable and antenna analyzer (refer to AntennaRequirements).

2.2 Checking the Global Communication Service pack

Global Communication Service (GCS) pack is needed if Nokia Indoor LMU iscommissioned using remote connection with TCP/IP port via Nokia NetAct.

When you have installed Nokia LMU Manager (refer to Chapter 3), check thatyou have the correct GCS version (R4.2 016 or later) on your Commissioning PC.

If you do not have the GCS installed or the version at your use is older than GCSR4.2 016, purchase the latest version from Nokia.

2.3 Downloading the Work Order file to your PC

Nokia recommends that when commissioning Nokia Indoor LMU, you use anXML format Work Order file created with Nokia NetAct Planner on the basis ofRadio Planner data.

Download the Work Order file to your commissioning PC from theNokia/operator server either locally before going to the site or remotely via NokiaNetAct.

If the Nokia LMU Work Order file is not available, you must enter all knownparameters manually during commissioning.

2.4 Commissioning equipment

The following equipment are needed when commissioning Nokia Indoor LMU:

• Commissioning PC (with Windows 95/98/2000 or NT4.0 software)

• LMU Manager cable or commercial RS232 serial cable (with pins 2 and 3crossed) to connect the commissioning PC to Nokia Indoor LMU

• Cable and antenna analyzer for measuring the delay/length and attenuationof the LMU GPS and LMU GSM RX antenna cables

• Hand-held GPS receiver with enhanced accuracy (DGPS, WAAS, EGNOSor MSAS) for measuring the local coordinates of the LMU and BTSantennas

Nokia provides a 10-metre-long (32.8 ft.) Manager cable.

Introduction to Nokia LMU Manager

3 Introduction to Nokia LMU ManagerThis chapter gives instructions on how to get started with Nokia LMU Manager.It is used for local and remote management of Nokia Indoor LMU and it runs inthe Windows 95/98/2000 and NT4.0 operating systems.

3.1 How to get started with Nokia LMU Manager

Nokia provides a CD-ROM which includes the latest version of the Nokia LMUManager SW and the Nokia LMU Manager setup program. These are alsoavailable in NOLS.

The setup program of Nokia LMU Manager SW installs the Manager SW to yourPC and sets up the default parameters. If an older version of Nokia LMU ManagerSW has previously been installed to your commissioning PC, the setup programfirst uninstalls the older version, after which you need to rerun the setup programto install the new version. When you open Nokia LMU Manager for the first time,choose Start > Programs > Nokia > Nokia LMU Manager on the Programs menu.You can create a shortcut on the desktop by clicking the right mouse button ontop of Nokia LMU Manager on the Programs menu. After that you can open theManager by double-clicking the icon on the desktop. No password is required toenter Nokia LMU Manager.

When you have started the Manager session and entered the commissioning mode(refer to Chapter 4), you can open the required windows. The opened windowsare saved in the Manager registry on disconnection or on exiting the Manager.When you reopen the Manager, it restores the windows that were opened earlier.

Entering the commissioning mode in Nokia LMU Manager halts continuousLMU Radio Interface Timing (RIT) reporting via Q1 if the LMU module is inmeasurement mode. Always disconnect the commissioning mode before exitingthe Manager session.

You must always save the Commissioning Report (see Chapter 5) before exitingthe LMU Manager session, disconnecting the commissioning PC or leaving thesite.

To exit Nokia LMU Manager, choose the Exit command on the File menu.

3.2 Using Help

Nokia LMU Manager software has a convenient, context-sensitive online Helpfor getting information about a task you are going to perform, a feature you mightwant to know more about or a command you may want to use.

To get Help

• press F1

• click the Help button or press F1 in any dialog box or

• choose Help Topics on the Help menu.

In the Help Topics window you can see three tabbed pages: Contents, Index andFind.

Contents

The Contents page displays a list of topics organised in books by category.

Index

The Index page lists keywords in alphabetical order through which differenttopics can be reached.

4 CommissioningThis chapter provides detailed information on how to commission Nokia IndoorLMU. Commissioning is done with Nokia LMU Manager’s CommissioningWizard either locally or via remote connection.

Nokia Indoor LMU can be commissioned also prior to installation. In that case,you must check the signal levels and save the Commissioning Report (atminimum) after the installation.

Installation, commissioning, and maintenance measures concerning Nokia IndoorLMU may be performed only by properly trained and authorised personnel.

Nokia LMU Manager is designed to indicate sufficient signal levels and,therefore, no exact signal values are given in this document.

All altitudes/lengths in Nokia LMU Manager are shown either in metres or feetdepending on your PC’s regional settings.

4.1 Connecting to Nokia Indoor LMU

This section provides instructions on how to connect to Nokia Indoor LMU eitherlocally or remotely via Nokia NetAct for commissioning.

To connect to Nokia Indoor LMU:

1. If using a local connection, connect one end of the RS232 serial cable tothe commissioning PC and the other end to the LMU module’s COM/LMPport (see Figure 2).

2. If using a remote connection, connect the IP network cable.

3. Start Nokia LMU Manager by clicking the Nokia LMU Manager icon onthe desktop.

4. If using a local connection, select an available COM port by choosing theCommissioning Port command on the File menu. Then choose the LocalConnection command on the Run menu.

5. If using a remote connection with TCP/IP port via Nokia NetAct (seeFigure 3), choose the Remote Connection command on the Run menu andperform the following steps to create the connection:

a. In the Database tab, select Connections and click Add.

b. In the Connection Properties window, choose BTS connectionfrom the Type field and enter a name for your connection.

c. In the Connection Definition field, choose Network Parametersand click Properties.

d. Fill in the following information in the Properties field and clickOK:• Host Name• Port

e. In the Connection Definition field, choose BSC Parameters andclick Properties.

f. In the Properties field, fill in the following information and clickOK:• User Name• Password• BSC ID

g. In the Connection Definition field, choose BTS Parameters andclick Properties.

h. In the Properties field, fill in the following information and clickOK:• BCF ID

i. Click Save.

j. In the Database tab, choose Nodes and click Add.

k. In the Node Properties window, enter the Node name and the Q1Address and click Save.

l. In the Direct tab, enter the Q1 address and click Connect.

A remote connection is now being created.

The next time you make a remote connection to an existing node, you only needto select the Node name and click Connect in the Direct tab.

4.2 Commissioning Nokia Indoor LMU

This section provides detailed instructions on the commissioning procedure forNokia Indoor LMU.

To perform the preliminary commissioning measures:

1. Enter the commissioning mode by choosing the Commissioning Modecommand on the Run menu of Nokia LMU Manager.

Entering the Commissioning Mode halts continuous LMU RIT reporting if theLMU module is in measurement mode.

2. Select the Work Order file you have downloaded from the Nokia/operatorserver (refer to Chapter 2.3) and open it by choosing the Open WorkOrder... command on the File menu.

If the Work Order file is not available, the Commissioning Wizard will usethe Default.xml file included in the Nokia LMU Manager SW.

3. Open the GPS, GSM, and Installation Status windows by clicking therespective icons on the toolbar or by choosing the GPS Status, GSMReceiver Status, and Installation Status commands consecutively on theStatus menu (see Figure 4).

4. Check that the LMU internal self-tests Status in the Installation Statuswindow reads OK (see Table 1).

5. If the LMU internal self-tests Status reads Not OK, the LMU module isfaulty and must be replaced.

6. Check that the GPS fix Status in the Installation Status window reads OK(see Table 1). This may take up to 12 minutes for the first GPS fix.

7. If the GPS fix reads Not OK, check from the GPS Status window that atleast four satellite signals are received at an adequate level. The signal levelis adequate when the signal level bar is green.

The LMU GPS antenna needs to receive a minimum of four satellite signalsduring the commissioning procedure. Once Nokia Indoor LMU is in operation, asmaller number of satellite signals is enough to maintain the GPS fix. The GPSfix will be lost if no GPS satellites are available.

8. If the GPS signal levels are not adequate and the GPS fix has not beenachieved (within 12 minutes), refer to Alarm Descriptions andMaintenance for troubleshooting.

To enter the date and time and the location data for the LMUantennas:

1. Date and Time are set automatically from your PC’s system calendar andsystem clock. Correct the settings if necessary.

2. Enter the Latitude and Longitude data of the LMU GPS and LMU GSMRX antennas. You can measure the location coordinates with the hand-heldGPS receiver.

If internal GSM antennas are used, the same location coordinate must be enteredfor the LMU GSM RX antenna as for the LMU GPS antenna (see Figure 6).

If two or more LMU GSM RX antennas have been installed at differentlocations on the site, the location coordinates must represent the meanlocation of the antennas.

If existing BTS RX antennas are shared for LMU GSM input, the locationcoordinate of the LMU GSM antenna must represent the mean location ofthe BTS RX antennas.

3. Enter the LMU GPS and LMU GSM RX antennas’ Altitude data inmetres/feet. You can measure the altitudes with the hand-held GPSreceiver.

If two or more LMU GSM RX antennas have been installed at differentlocations on the site, the antenna altitude must represent the mean altitudeof the antennas.

If existing BTS RX antennas are shared for LMU GSM input, the altitudeof the LMU GSM antenna must represent the mean altitude of the BTS RXantennas.

Use the WGS-84 map datum in the hand-held GPS receiver when measuring thelocation coordinates and altitude.

If the Latitude, Longitude and Altitude data is defined in Nokia LMU WorkOrder, check that the default data complies with the location and altitudemeasured with the hand-held GPS receiver. Record possible deviations to theUser Information dialog box which appears on the window when theCommissioning Wizard is finished.

The location coordinates for the LMU GSM antennas must be entered correctly,because they are used for delay compensation calculations. Entering the locationcoordinates is especially important when internal GSM antennas are used.

1. Check that the default Latitude and Longitude data of the Reference BTSTX antenna complies with the location coordinate measured with the hand-held GPS receiver. Correct the location coordinate if necessary.

BTS TX antennas and radio link antennas are considerable radiationsources. Avoid standing close to a radiating antenna or any of its elementswhen measuring the location coordinates and altitude.

The site survey data includes the BTS TX antenna coordinates for all BTSsectors. If the data has been imported to Nokia NetAct, the correctcoordinate for the serving BTS sector is proposed in the Nokia LMU WorkOrder file. If the preliminary site survey has not been completed and theBTS sectors are no more than 2 metres (6.6 ft.) apart, the mean coordinatesbetween BTS sectors can be used.

2. Check that the default Reference BTS TX antenna’s Altitude data complieswith the altitude measured with the hand-held GPS receiver. Correct thealtitude if necessary.

Use the WGS-84 map datum in the hand-held GPS receiver when measuring thelocation coordinates and altitude.

If the default Latitude, Longitude and Altitude data deviates from the measuredlocation and altitude, record the deviation to the User Information dialog boxwhich appears on the window when the Commissioning Wizard is finished.

The location coordinates for the BTS antennas must be entered correctly, becausethey are used for delay compensation calculations. Entering the locationcoordinates is especially important when internal GSM antennas are used.

1. Check that the default CI numbers of the neighbouring BTS sectors arecorrect.

If Nokia LMU Work Order is not available, you must obtain the CI numbers onthe basis of site survey data or from the BSC database.

2. Check that the default Latitude and Longitude data of the BTS sectorantennas comply with the location coordinates measured with the hand-held GPS receiver. Correct the location coordinates if necessary.

3. Check that the default Altitude data of the BTS sector antennas complywith the altitudes measured with the hand-held GPS receiver. Correct thealtitudes if necessary.

If the default Latitude, Longitude and Altitude data deviates from the measuredlocation and altitude, record the deviation to the User Information dialog boxwhich appears on the window when the Commissioning Wizard is finished.

1. Set the GPS Antenna Delay with the Delay Compensation Calculator.Click the Calc button for the GPS Antenna Delay to open the calculatorand perform the following steps:

a. Check the Velocity factor for GPS Feeder Delay and GPS JumperDelay. The default velocity factor is 0.90 for Feeder Delay and 0.70for Jumper Delay. Correct the data if necessary.

b. Enter the lengths of the GPS feeder cable and the GPS jumper cablein metres/feet to the respective fields. Corresponding delay values innanoseconds (ns) are shown automatically when the cable lengthsare entered.

When the lengths for both GPS feeder and GPS jumper cables havebeen entered, the Total Delay in nanoseconds (ns) is calculatedautomatically.

c. Click Set Value. The calculated Total Delay appears in the timecalculation parameters window of the Commissioning Wizard (seeFigure 10).

Air Delay is shown automatically in the respective field. It iscalculated from the distance between the LMU GSM antenna andthe reference BTS TX antenna. If the location coordinates of theLMU GSM antenna and the reference BTS TX antenna are the same,Air Delay is zero. If the BTS mast is very high and the handset islocated close to the mast, the altitude difference between the handsetand the BTS TX antennas may cause an error in the locationmeasurement of that handset. If necessary, the error may beminimised by entering extra Air Delay for compensation.

You can also enter the delay values in nanoseconds in the time calculationparameters window of the Commissioning Wizard (see Figure 10). You canmeasure the delays with the cable and antenna analyzer (most models show theresult in nanoseconds).

3. Set the Frame Clock (BTS/Q1) and External Frame Clock (EXT/Q1)Delays.

If a narrowband combiner (for example, a Remote Tune Combiner - RTCx)is used, set the delays to approximately 500 ns (or refer to the narrowbandcombiner manufacturer’s requirements for more specific values) tocompensate for the delay caused by the combiner.

If a wideband combiner (for example, a Wideband Output Combiner -WOCx ) is used, set the delays to zero.

If long BTS TX antenna cables or additional extension cables are used(exceeding 10 m/32.8 ft.), add the delay values caused by the long cablesto the Frame Clock and External Frame Clock Delays.

Set the Frame Clock and External Frame Clock Delay values to zero withBTSs that do not support BSS synchronisation.

The Frame Clock and External Frame Clock Delay settings are especiallyimportant with EDGE system base stations.

5. Check the parameters in the Default Neighbour List. If the Nokia LMUWork Order file is not available, the Default Neighbour List field is leftempty.

6. If the Clock Output was activated, check the default Time Slot Offset. Therange for Time Slot Offset is 0-7.

Nokia UltraSite GSM/EDGE BTS software ignores the clock input until it isactivated with Nokia BTS Manager.

2. If the Clock Output was disabled in the previous step, the CommissioningWizard proceeds directly to a dialog box illustrated in Figure 19.

To set Nokia Intratalk and Nokia Citytalk BTSs into clock slave mode:

Use an antistatic wrist strap when handling the BTS units.

1. Switch off the power to the BTS.

2. Remove the BCFB unit from the BTS and set the BTS into clock slavemode by removing the BCFB unit’s dip switch (X1805) from the masterposition. If necessary, you can place the dip switch to one of the componentpins to save for further use (see Figure 18).

3. Reinstall the BCFB unit and switch on the power to the BTS.

4. Click Next to continue.

5. If the Default Neighbour List is not defined in the Work Order file, selectthe wanted signals for monitoring in the GSM Status window by clickingthe right mouse button on top of the window and choosing Show SelectedNeighbours. Modify the data if necessary and click OK.

6. Refresh the GSM Status window by clicking the GSM icon on the toolbar(see Figure 4). The LMU enters scanning mode, and the GSM Statuswindow shows immediately all the received BCCHs. The BSICs are showngradually as they are decoded. When all the BCCHs and BSICs are shown,the LMU enters measuring mode, and the drifting value for each signal isshown (it may take up to 10 minutes before the first drifting values aremeasured). After that the levels and drifting values of all the receivedsignals are continually updated.

7. Check from the GSM Status window that the GSM signal levels areadequate. The GSM signal level is adequate when the signal level bar isgreen.

Nokia LMU SW is designed not to indicate signal levels exceeding -30dBm.

If the closest BTS’s signal level in the GSM Status window exceeds -40dBm, additional isolation for the LMU GSM RX antenna is required (referto Antenna Requirements).

8. Check that the drifting value for each selected BCCH frequency in theGSM Status window does not exceed 3 m/s.

9. If the drifting value for any neighbouring BTS is too high, the clocksettings of that BTS may be incorrect or there may be a BTS-relatedproblem with synchronisation. Inform the site management personnel oryour superior about the problem.

The drifting values for neighbouring BTSs in the GSM Status window should beconsidered relative until reference BTS drifting is shown.

10. Check that the Bit Error Ratio (BER) for each selected BCCH frequency inthe GSM Status window is less than 1% by clicking the right mouse buttonon top of the wanted BCCH row in the BER column, or by clicking theBER icon on the toolbar and selecting the wanted channels.

11. The neighbouring BTS signals that have too high a BER cannot be used formeasurement. The BCCH transmitter may be faulty, or there may beinterference from an adjacent channel, in which case you may have toadjust the position of the LMU GSM RX antenna(s) (refer to AntennaRequirements).

After adjusting the antenna position, you need to refresh the GSM Statuswindow by clicking the GSM icon on the toolbar.

If a signal level is inadequate or the drifting and BER values of a signal are toohigh, refer to Alarm Descriptions and Maintenance for troubleshooting andinform the site management personnel or your superior about the problem.

If you have not selected neighbours for monitoring with the Show SelectedNeighbours command, or if the Default Neighbour List is not defined in theWork Order file, the LMU enters free scanning mode when you click the GSMStatus icon on the toolbar. In free scanning mode, the GSM Status window showsany signals received by the LMU (max. 16) in order of signal level amplitude.

12. Save the Commissioning Report (the same file you saved after resetting theLMU) by choosing the Commissioning Report... command on the Runmenu to add the updated GSM signal data to the Commissioning Report(for more information on the Commissioning Report, refer to Chapter 5).

You must always save the Commissioning Report before exiting the LMUManager, disconnecting the commissioning PC or leaving the site.

13. Check the data in the Commissioning Report.

14. Disconnect the Manager session by choosing the Disconnect command onthe Run menu.

15. Exit Nokia LMU Manager by choosing the Exit command on the Filemenu.

2. Call the BSC assistant or take a remote connection to BSC to check theLMU state with a ZQWL command. If the Q1 functions properly, thefollowing data should be visible at the BSC (see Figure 23):

• BCF number

• Type: TRE

• Index: Next available transmission equipment number/18 (2 gen.)

• Q1 address: 131 (default)/25 (2 gen.)

• Equipment type: LMUHW

• Equipment generation: Q1E (default)/TMS (2 gen.)

• State: -

3. If the automated Q1 equipment search takes too long, add Nokia IndoorLMU to the BSC transmission equipment list with a ZQWA command.

4. Start the checksum polling and check the equipment generation and stateat the BSC with a ZQUF command.

5. Create the LCS elements for the neighbouring and reference BTSs at theBSC with a ZEXC command.

6. If location and/or BSS synchronisation for the area is activatedimmediately, create the LMU area at the BSC with a ZEXA command toactivate LMU RIT measurement reporting between Nokia Indoor LMUand the BSC location calculation module (SMLC).

LMU usage for the LMU area is set according to the following alternatives:

• 1 for synchronisation

• 2 for location service

• 3 for synchronisation and location service

7. If BSS synchronisation is used and you do not have two serial ports in youCommissioning PC, disconnect the RS232 serial cable from the LMUmodule’s COM/LMP port.

Connect the RS232 serial cable to the MMI connector on the BCFB unit inNokia Intratalk and Nokia Citytalk BTSs (see A of Figure 24) and on theBase Operations and Interfaces (BOIx) unit in Nokia UltraSiteGSM/EDGE BTSs (see B of Figure 24).

You may activate synchronisation with BSS 10 by entering the LMU area dataaccordingly. For full support, BSS 11 is required.

If the BTS has been set to clock slave mode with Nokia BTS Manager, BSSsynchronisation of Nokia UltraSite GSM/EDGE BTSs can also be activatedremotely afterwards by changing the LMU usage setting for the LMU area witha ZEXB command. Changing the default clock out timing settings for the GPS fix

The default clock out timing settings for the GPS fix should only be changed forBSS synchronisation purposes if necessary. They are not changed as part of thenormal commissioning procedure.

To change the default clock out timing settings for the GPS fix:

1. Click the Advanced option on theView menu to activate the advanced usersettings on the Maintenance menu.

2. Select the Clock Out Timing Settings option on the Maintenance menu.

3. Correct the default settings.

The default clock out timing setting for time from fix lost to fix lost alarmis set to 10 seconds and cannot be changed.

5 Commissioning reportAt the end of the commissioning procedure, the Commissioning Report is savedin a file on the PC hard disk. The report is an XML file that you can open withNokia LMU Manager SW or with an XML editor such as Microsoft XMLNotepad 1.5 or later (see Figure 26). You can also open the CommissioningReport with Internet Explorer, but the layout of the report will be different thanwith an XML editor.

The Commissioning Report provides the following information:

• Report title

• Date and time

• User name

• User comments

• User actions

• Status

• LMU parameter settings

The Commissioning Report must be imported locally or remotely to NokiaNetAct Planner where the SMLC object data for the LMU area is modified. Thismodification is important to ensure correct location coordinate information andneighbour list data.

Cable lengths are always shown in metres and the Latitude and Longitude data infull degrees with decimals in the Commissioning Report. If you enter thecommissioning parameters in the BSC database manually, the coordinates mustbe entered in degrees, minutes and seconds.

Only the signals defined in the Nokia LMU Work Order are shown on the DefaultNeighbour List. The Commissioning Report also includes an Off Neighbour Listwhere all other signals received by the LMU are listed for possible future use.

6 Troubleshooting and fault reportingIn the case of a failure in the commissioning procedure, check the cause of thefailure from the Commissioning Report. You can also check the LMU alarmsfrom the BTS, BSC, or Nokia NetAct (for more information on the alarms, referto Alarm Descriptions and Maintenance).

The commissioning procedure may fail for the following reasons:

• Cables, connectors, or protectors of Nokia Indoor LMU are faulty.

• The external AC/DC power supply for Nokia Indoor LMU is faulty.

• Cables are improperly or incorrectly connected.

• LMU GPS or LMU GSM RX antenna is faulty.

• LMU module is faulty.

• Network planning is carried out incorrectly or the radio environment isespecially problematic.

• There is a problem in the Q1 bus due to a problem in Nokia Indoor LMU,the BTS, or other equipment.

For more information on fixing possible faults, refer to Alarm Descriptions andMaintenance.

The LMU module should be replaced if the generated alarms cannot be cancelledduring commissioning.

Report all damages, failures, or faults to Nokia using the Failure Report Form(FRF) provided by Nokia Professional Services (PS).
