Broadband limbo
P arts of Newcastle are stuck in broadband limbo, with the Abbott Government failing to provide information about the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN),
according to Shadow Minister for Communications, Jason Clare.
Visiting Newcastle on Monday, Mr Clare said residents in Mayfield that had witnessed construction of Labor’s fibre to the premises system begin prior to the election had seen little progress since.
“The people of Newcastle are now in limbo,” he said. “Newcastle knows that they are not going to get the
first-class national broadband network, they are going to get the second-class network but they do not know when.
“They don’t know when they are going to get the NBN rollout and it’s important that the Government sets the record straight and tells the people of Newcastle when they are going to get the second-rate, second-class that they’re now saying they will deliver.”
Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon said the uncertainty was having a huge impact on local busi-nesses.
“It’s a critical issue in Newcastle because we’ve got a lot of young start-up companies and entrepreneurs who are starting to make those critical decisions about wether to stay in Newcastle to do their business or whether they are going to move outside of Newcastle or offshore,” she said.
“Some people have actually made some serious

business decisions based on the fact that they would have access to high-speed broadband and now that’s not going to happen they’ve got to make some serious reassessments. We are a city that is priding itself on research, development and innovation…but we’re being stymied and put at a disadvantage by not having access
to superfast broadband.”Maps published by NBN Co in May last year showed
construction had begun across Mayfield, however maps on the NBN Co website currently indicate that build work is underway in Cameron Park and West Wallsend, with service available in parts of Cameron Park.

Your next nasty comment could burn a hole in your pocket
A very interesting and groundbreaking case was played out in court last week with a former student at Orange High School being ordered to pay $105,000 for defaming a teacher on Twitter and Facebook.
Andrew Farley, who was 20 at the time the judgment was made in November, apparently believed music teacher Christine Mickle had something to do with her father, the former head of music and arts at Orange High, leaving the school for health reasons in 2008.
District Court judge Michael Elkaim ruled “there is absolutely no evidence to substantiate that belief”.
Mr Farley graduated from high school in 2011 and posted the defamatory comments in Novem-ber 2012. Ms Mickle took sick leave when made aware of the comments and returned to work late in 2013.
This should serve as a wake-up call to all social media users that defamation on Facebook and Twitter is now very much real. This case provides a precedent, and while judges are not compelled to match the amount of damages handed out in previous cases, the next person who appears before a court in a similar case may find them-selves out of pocket to the same extent.
It’s so easy, though, to not think about who is going to see your comments. You think you are just talking amongst friends but if someone
doesn’t have strong enough security settings on their account then friends of their friends etc. may read it and it can all blow up in your face.
The general public are sometimes quick to express surprise at some of the large payments awarded in defamation and slander cases but, if you think about it, even if you are defamed and then win in the courts, the effects of the defama-tion can stay with you for many years.
People are more likely to remember hearing or reading something bad or embarrassing about a person, than the subsequent ruling of the comments being found to be false and defama-tory. This could make it hard for the person to secure employment or even be shunned in social circles.
So considering that, I don’t have a problem with the $105,000. That amount was actually made up of an $85,000 payment to Ms Mickle and $20,000 in aggravated damages after the judge ruled that Mr Farley’s response to the case warranted the additional amount, partly because Mr Farley did not appear at the trial and seemed to have “aban-doned his interest in the proceedings”.
We’ve heard a lot about online bullying and the sometimes tragic results it can have. I hope the widespread media coverage of this case finds it way to the ears and eyes of young social media users who may not fully appreciate the serious of their actions on the internet.
This should serve as a wake-up call

T he Hunter Expressway will open to traffic and the community on Saturday, March 22.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss, and NSW Minister for Roads and Ports Duncan Gay made the announcement last week, with Mr Truss saying that he will visit the region for the official dedication on Friday, March 21.
“This has certainly been a much-antic-ipated project for people in the Hunter region,” Mr Truss said.
“With $1.5 billion of the total $1.7 billion for the project funded by the Federal Government, I am delighted to be able to visit the site to cut the ribbon to mark the completion of the Expressway.”
It brings to a close five years of work to build the road, after funding for the project was first announced in the 2009 federal budget.
In that time 10,000 workers were employed to build the 39.5km long road, as well as its 52 bridges and six inter-changes, stretching from an interchange at the M1 Pacific Motorway at Newcastle Link Road to the New England Highway at Lower Belford. The other interchanges are located at Buchanan, Kurri Kurri, Loxford, Allandale and Branxton.
Community involvement welcomed for Hunter Expressway opening on March 22

The Expressway is expected to cut travel times to Newcastle by up to 28 minutes and by 2031 is forecasted to reduce traf-fic through Rutherford, Maitland and Thornton by up to 30,000 vehicles.
Mr Gay said that the Expressway would
mean more time spent with family and friends, and less time on the road. “Increasing the efficiency of the road network also provides clear productivity benefits for business and the economy,” Mr Gay said.
The expressway will open to experi-enced cyclists for exploration between Kurri Kurri and Buchanan at 7am on the Saturday, and pedestrians and recrea-tional cyclists at 8am, with access via the Kurri Kurri interchange. It will then close at 11:30am before it is opened to traffic in the afternoon. Parking will be available at Booth Park in Kurri Kurri.

N ew figures by the Australian Bureau of Statistics have found it is taking underemployed Austral-ians longer to find more work.
A survey conducted by the ABS in September 2013 and released last month found that the median duration of part-time workers wanting more work increased by five weeks for workers aged 15-19 since 2012, now waiting 26 weeks. For works aged 35-44, this period increased by four weeks to 34 weeks.
The survey found older workers were waiting the longest to find full-time work, with those aged 45-54 waiting 40 weeks, and workers aged 55 and over having to wait a full year. ABS Director of Labour Force and Supplementary Surveys Stephen Collett said the figures are now back to the level they were three years ago.
“The number of unemployed part-time workers wanting and available for more hours has increased to 2010 and 2011 levels,” he said. “Just over a quarter of part-time workers stated they would prefer more work hours, with over half of these preferring to find full-time work.”
The Post spoke to four underemployed locals about their frustration.

Ms ALcOrN currently works four days a week at fruit mar-ket, doing an average of 25 hours while completing a TAFE course and looking for more work. She had to take time off for surgery last year, and believes that employers are seeing the gap in her resume and judging her.
“I sat down one week and applied for around 100 jobs and I didn’t get a single reply. I applied for handyman work, lol-lipop man, retail, supermarkets, admin – everything. I have worked in hospitality, I have certificates in retail and IT and I’ve even done half a trade. I would take anything full-time because I want to save for a house and car.”
Ms OATEs is a primary school teacher, who despite graduat-ing four years ago with Honours has only this year managed to secure permanent part-time work lasting more than a month, taking a three-day-a-week maternity leave position. Ms Oates said this has held her back. “Since graduating I have applied for over 50 jobs and have never had an inter-view. [Not working full-time has] stopped me from essential career progression through training opportunities offered to full-time teachers, access to sick leave/maternity leave, or even the ability to teach and bond with my own class and put into practice those skills I spent four years learning.”

Lizotte’s to sell up
Iconic Newcastle music venue, Lizotte’s will soon change hands, with current owners Jo and Brian Lizotte announc-ing plans to sell the popular restaurant and live music venue in the old Kings Theatre at Lambton.
In an update on the Lizotte’s Facebook page last week, Mr Lizotte said the deci-sion to sell the venue was personal.
“This week we have put out expres-sions of interest for someone to take over these 3 amazing spaces [sic],” he wrote.
“Our reasons are personal ones and a yearn for a slightly simpler lifestyle and spending more time together was the deciding factor [sic].”
"This is one of the most rewarding adventures we have ever undertaken.
"Working with sensational national and international acts, nurturing the high quality of amazing local talent in all 3 area and have to opportunity to meet the 10,000's of loyal patrons who return again and again [sic].
Mr Lizotte said it would be “business as usual” at the venue until a new owner is found, with acts booked into 2015.
Lizotte’s Kincumber on the Central Coast and Lizotte’s Dee Why on Sydney’s Northern Beaches will also be sold.
Mr Lizotte said he would be looking for a new owner who would carry on the tradition of “fine food with a musical mood” Lizzote’s had become known for.
The Lambton venue has seating for 200 people at the 104-year-old Art Deco theatre.

Mr Bourke has completed a Bachelor of Psychology, but has found that there are very few opportunities to work in the field without having completed post-graduate qualifica-tions.
“I’ve found there are not many entry-level positions but a whole lot of post-grad options in psych work.
"You can’t seem to get work without experience, but you can’t get any experience if you don’t work.
"It’s pretty disheartening when you work hard to get your Bachelor’s degree, but have to keep studying if you actually want to use the degree.”
Ms Turner has been looking for full-time work for 12 months, working in four different hospitality jobs in that time, and is currently doing 20-30 hours a week at a Kurri Kurri pub. She is also completing her Diploma of Management.
“At first they give me heaps of shifts and then they drop my hours back until I find new work.
"I would kill for a full-time job doing almost anything. I’m a hard worker and reliable, but apparently that counts for nothing. I want to save to buy a house, but I know it’s hap-pening to so many people. Hospitality is terrible. It is really hard to get anywhere.”

M embers of the community were given the opportunity to have their voices heard last week, with a series of
community information sessions on the route options for the light rail taking place across Maitland and Newcastle.
Around 20 community groups ranging from local schools, surf clubs and residents groups attended a session at Newcastle Museum last Wednesday evening, where UrbanGrowth NSW project manager, David Antcliff and Jason Rogers, from Transport for NSW, presented on the light rail and how it will help revitalise the city of Newcastle.
Long-serving Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club member, Dick Spinks said he had some concerns over how the light rail service would connect to Newcastle Beach.
“A few of our members and a lot of the people who visit the beach actually come from Maitland so we would favour an option that runs up to Pacific Park,” he said.
John Sutton, a Tighes Hill resident and member of the Thorsby Villages Alliance, told the Post he felt the information session raised more questions than it answered.
“The take home message was that it was an information session to tell us they

well as bus connections from Wickham, remained unanswered. Mr Antcliff said each of the three route options could
deliver urban renewal to the Newcastle CBD and community consultation was vital to their decision making process.

A tireless campaigner in the fight against domestic violence and violence against women has been named Newcastle’s
Woman of the Year. Helen Cummings, who has assisted
hundreds of victims through her work at the Victims of Crime Assistance League (VOCAL) in Hamilton was recognised at an International Women’s Day breakfast last Friday.
“My feet still haven’t touched the ground,” Ms Cummings said.
“It truly was completely unexpected.”Herself a victim of domestic violence,
Ms Cummings told her personal story of survival in her 2011 memoir, Blood Vows.
Ms Cummings said while some of the book’s more revealing chapters in the required her to dig deep, she said the hardest part was becoming an advocate for stopping violence against women and children.
“Once the book was published I couldn’t just rest on my laurels,” she said.
“I had to be prepared to speak up and speak out against domestic violence and it’s only recently that I have developed

the confidence to stand in front of a room of 200 people and tell my story.”
Ms Cummings said she had been told by a number of women that reading Blood Vows had encouraged them to speak up about their own violence relationships.
She told the Post she was always happy to take a phone call from a woman in need.
Announcing the award last week, Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen, described Ms Cummings as an “outstand-ing example of selfless commitment to advocating for sustainable change in the community.
He said Ms Cummings’ background in law meant she was well place to lobby for change at a state and federal level to ensure society’s most vulnerable are protected.
The daughter of former Newcastle Lord Mayor, Joy Cummings, Australia’s first female lord mayor, Ms Cummings said she was particularly honoured to received the award from Mr Owen.
“Mum always said people have more in common than their politics,” she said.
“[Mr Owen] has been a very outspoken and strong advocate in the fight against domestic violence and given that he is from the opposite side of politics it makes receiving the award all the more poignant.”

W hen baby Finn Baker-McCloy entered the world last year, he was six weeks premature and in need of immediate
cardiorespiratory care.Thankfully, the skilled neonatologists
and nursing staff at the John Hunter Chil-dren’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provided little Finn with the care he needed to survive those first few weeks of life.
It was Finn’s rocky beginnings that motivated his grandfather, Newcastle Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy, and wife Tracey, to give back to the intensive care unit that saved their grandson’s life, with a $110,000 donation.
The generous donation allowed the NICU to purchase five new state-of-the-art cardiorespiratory monitors, which allow doctors and nursing staff to measure the heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, temperature and oxygen level in a baby’s blood.
While Mr McCloy has enjoyed a long association with the hospital – his property group, McCloy Group built the hospital in the late 80s – he has remained modest about the donation when he spoke

“These monitors are the bread and butter of our nursery,” he said.
“They tell us not only what is occurring now, but also what has occurred over a previous 12-hour period and the other thing is, we can link all the monitors together so that we can actually be in one location but be aware of what is happening with all the babies in the nursery.
“It is amazing when we get these dona-tions because every cent goes to the equip-ment that we use to care for sick babies and we are incredibly dependant on donations to purchase fantastic equipment.”
Finn’s mother, Louise McCloy said her NICU experience was a real eye opener.
“Our NICU experience opened my eyes to how necessary it is for the whole of the community to support the John Hunter Children’s Hospital NICU – the doctors and nursing staff were simply amazing.”
Baby Finn is now thriving and recently celebrated his first birthday.

I n the same week that a report from the Property Council of Australia revealed Novocastrians crave more housing in the CBD, the NSW Depart-
ment of Planning and Infrastructure has announced proposed changes to current planning controls that could see an addi-tion 6,000 homes created in the city centre over the next 20 years.
The changes, focused mainly around the East End and Hunter Street Mall, would allow for greater building heights in selected locations, ranging up to 65 metres in some cases.
The changes would affect the develop-ments by UrbanGrowth NSW and GPT Group, including six residential projects.
Property Council of Australia NSW regional director for the Hunter region, Andrew Fletcher said the findings of the Council’s My City: The People’s Verdict survey revealed a desire for more housing in the CBD.
“The research proves that Novocastrians want radical surgery to the way their city is managed and that the Government is right to push ahead with its CBD renewal strategy,” he said.
“There is no doubt that Novocastrians want action to streamline the planning process and cut red tape so we can increase housing supply and attract the

infrastructure, jobs and housing that the Hunter needs.”
Deputy director general of Planning and Infrastructure, Stephen McIntyre said the new planning regulations would provide the community and the business sector
with certainty about future growth in the city centre.
According to Mr McIntyre, Planning and Infrastructure is working with communi-ties to renew suburbs and cities across NSW.
“Once in place, development approval times will be improved as the city is provided with long-term planning controls,” he said.
“These plans allow capacity for an addi-tional 10,000 jobs and 6,000 homes to be created in the city centre by 2036 – homes and jobs that will be supported by new and renewed transport infrastructure.”
The proposed changes will be on public exhibition until Friday, April 4.
Copies of the plans can be viewed at www.planing.nsw.gov,au/revitalising-newcastle or at the City of Newcastle Administration Centre.

S amaritans needs volunteers. The Hunter-based charity is looking for hard-working, friendly and reliable volunteers of all ages to
assist in their Mayfield, Hamilton and Wallsend shops.
Samaritans retail co-ordinator, Pauline Sellers, said there was a place in Samari-tans shops for everyone.
“We have a variety of different jobs in each of our stores,” she said.
“If someone is uncomfortable handling cash, they can work out the back sorting donations and steaming garments – there is a niche for everyone to fill and we’re
certainly not ones to crack the whip on anyone.”
Ms Sellers said Samaritans Shops offered flexible rosters and working hours for its volunteers.
Renee Williams began working at the Hamilton shop as part of a work for the dole program.
She said she enjoyed working in such a relaxed environment and even met her housemate through her work at the shop.
Anyone interested in volunteering in a Samaritans shop is encouraged to contact Pauline Sellers on 0409 074 412 or email [email protected].

teen arrested after graffiti attack
A teenager will face court next month fol-lowing investigations into an alleged graffiti offence.
About 8.30am on Friday, March 7 police were called to Broadmeadow Train Station following reports that a group had defaced railway property.
A 19-year-old boy was arrested and issued with a future court attendance notice for the offence of damage property with graf-fiti implement. He will appear in Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday, April 22.
A second teen was arrested but released pending further inquiries.
Boys arrested over midnight snack
Police have charged two boys after a break-in at a shop in Cardiff last week. About 1.30am on Thursday, March 6 three teenagers, a girl and two boys, allegedly broke through the front door of a fast food shop on Harrison Street.
They allegedly stole over 30 bottles of soft drink and a number of packets of chips, before fleeing.
Police were contacted and a short time later two boys, aged 14 and 16, were ar-rested and taken to Belmont Police Station.
The two boys are expected to be cau-tioned in relation to the break-in.

Harmony Day, celebrated Friday 21 March, is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse back-grounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it.
The message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs and there are a series of events happening around the city for everyone to enjoy.
On Monday 17 March Swim for Harmony will be hosted at Mayfield Swimming Centre. Free family fun kicks off at 10am and festivities will run until 2pm, including multicultural food, music, sport and entertainment.
Newcastle Library will host Story Time and Aboriginal dancers from 10am followed by morning tea with the African Social Enter-prise Group and a Chinese Dragon at 12noon. Visitors will be able to decorate a hand to plant in the harmony garden.
Newcastle Art Gallery will host a tea house tasting at $20 per person Friday 21 March from 6 to 8pm. Presented by Madame Mo’s Dumpling House, the event is inspired by tea set pieces on display in the current exhibition Blue+White. Bookings are essential, call 4974 5100.
Newcastle Museum and ICON School of Make Up have organised a special Harmony Day beauty make over with award winning hair and make up artists. Book a time slot now between 3 and 5pm, Friday 21 March. Call 4974 1400 for details.
There will also be an Indian cooking demonstration at Newcastle Museum with Miss Promila Gupta, a master chef of Indian cuisine. She will be cooking her favourite dishes and then there will be a tasting. The demonstration is from 11am to 12.30pm and is free, just drop in.
Council encourages workplaces throughout the Hunter to get involved in ‘A Taste of Harmony’, a free and delicious way to celebrate cultural diversity. Just register your workplace, choose a day and time that suits in the week of 17 to 23 March, and tell your workmates to bring a plate of food to share.

People often comment that “you can’t get wet under a water saving showerhead” but the truth is, there is no recognisable difference between a water-efficient shower-head and a regular showerhead.
Lake Macquarie residents again have the opportunity to bust this myth themselves by exchanging their old show-erhead for a water-efficient model. It’s worth remembering that if you shower for six minutes, a water efficient shower-head can save up to 50 litres of water for each shower, or up to 20,000 litres of water per person per year.
Council is doing its part to save water and is well on target to achieve a ten per cent reduction in drinking water use in our operations and at our public facilities by 2017/2018.
Major water saving initiatives undertaken by Council over the past five years include the installation of shower timers at holiday parks, and water efficient taps and showerheads at holiday parks, surf clubs and swim centres. Council has also installed smart metres at high consuming sites to enhance water monitoring and leak detection.
Throughout March you can bring your old showerhead, a previous Hunter Water bill and a Council rates notice to Toronto and Swansea libraries during business hours and can choose from a standard 9 litre per minute water effi-cient showerhead for free, or a premium 7.5 litre per minute model for $50.
Council also supports households to reduce energy and water consumption and save money through its Bust Your Household Bills program. When you sign up, you receive a free Bill Buster kit which contains information and products to help cut your households bills. By joining the program, you will not only start saving money, you will also be looking after the future of our city. You can sign up to the program at www.lakemac.com.au/bust-your-bills and if you 'Like' Council’s Facebook page (lakemaccity) you can keep up to date with the Bust Your Bills Program.

D irector of Newcastle Port Corporation and fourth-generation Novocastrian, Paul Jeans has been installed as
the University of Newcastle’s seventh chancellor.
NSW Govenor, Marie Bashir officiated the installation ceremony at the univer-sity on Friday, where Mr Jeans was enrobed and presented with the univer-sity mace and said he was “honoured and humbled” by the appointment.
“Newcastle has played such a big role in preparing me for and providing with many of the opportunities in my life,” he said.
“It has been fantastic to see Newcastle transform from a steel city, where one in ten workers in Newcastle were employed by BHP, into a diverse and vibrant centre.
“Newcastle today has adapted and moved on a rightly has a promising future.”
Vice-chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen said Mr Jeans’ leadership skills would be a valuable asset.
“The chancellor’s leadership will be critical as we work to realise the vision, aspirations and ambitions of our NeW Directions Strategic Plan, building on the
remarkable legacy of leadership since its foundation nearly 50 years ago.”
Mr Jeans said the university’s ambi-tious plans for the future, including the construction of its new city campus, had attracted him to the role but he added the university faced challenges, too.
“There are challenges and opportuni-ties ahead for the University of Newcastle and the university’s presence interna-tionally qualifies as both,” he said.
The new chancellor said more needed to be done to promote the teaching and research of the university on the world stage.

Jets goalkeeper, Ben Kennedy’s lovely locks were given the chop in the name of breast cancer awareness after a Tuesday morning training session at Ray Watt Oval.
Kennedy said he was motivated to organise the fundraiser for Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation after his mum began receiving treatment for a breast cancer recurrence.
“I know first hand the impact it can have on family when a loved on is diagnosed with breast cancer,” he said.
“Being a bloke you don’t really realise how much it can affect you until some-one on your family is hit by it – hopefully we raise a bit of money and awareness about it.”
Kennedy’s mum, Karen said, at first, she was doubtful her son would go through with his plan.
“When Ben came to me and told me he wanted to shave his head I didn’t think he’d go ahead with it,” she said.
“I’m very proud but I said to him, ‘As long as I don’t have to,’ – I plan to keep my hair for as long as I can.”
Jets midfielder, Josh Brilliante also lost his trademark beard, before caving in to pressure from his teammates and shaving his head as well. In all, eleven Jets players, as well as coaches Clayton Zane and Craig Deans took part in the fundraiser.
Jets fans who were not able to donate on game day are encouraged to do so by visit-ing www.hbcf.org.au.

I f you’ve been to a Knights game over the past 26 years, chances are you would have seen Joy Sinclair there.
Mrs Sinclair, who celebrated her 90th birthday at Wests New Lambton with friends and family last Wednesday, has been a Knights season ticketholder every season since the club’s inception in 1988.
“I’ve only missed one home game,” Mrs Sinclair said. “And that was only because I was in hospital.”
She will be there again this Sunday when the Knights play Canberra at Hunter Stadium at 6.30pm and maintains her confidence for this season despite the 30-8 loss to Penrith last weekend.
“They’ll win it,” Mrs Sinclair said when asked how Newcastle will perform in this year’s premiership. “My favourite player at the moment is Tyrone Roberts.”

nsw seniors weekNewcastle’s happiest Happy Ukulele Group ready to spread more joy this Seniors Week
They are perhaps the happi-est bunch of seniors in the Newcastle area.
Happy Ukulele Group Stockton (HUGS) meet twice
a week at the Stockton Girl Guides Hall to hone their uke skills and play music and will soon be spreading joy a bit further to other seniors as part of local Seniors Week celebrations.
HUGS coordinator, Elaine Johnson said more than anything the group just liked to have fun.
“At the Happy Ukulele Group the goals we set were just to enjoy ourselves and be happy,” she said.
“We’ve got ladies who have never played ukulele before in their lives and profes-sional musicians and music teachers here – its not intimidating, we just have fun and enjoy ourselves.”
She said the group also provided a valu-able social outlet for elderly members of the Stockton community who may feel depressed or isolated.

MEDICAL MATTERS
Testing for Prostate Cancer is an individual choice
I have just turned 50 and am generally fit and healthy, but I was wondering if, at my age, I should start to have checks for prostate cancer? Bob, 50
A few years ago, Bob, I would have said yes, but recent research is changing the way we think about things. It is true that the risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age and family history. Men with an immediate (first degree) relative diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 65 or men with an immediate relative diagnosed with breast cancer are at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer than the general male population. However, prostate cancer is generally a very slow progressing disease so that many men may never develop any significant symptoms associated with it in the course of their lifetime. Screening for prostate cancer is now considered to be an individual choice.
Prostate cancer screening has become controversial, and there is some disagree-ment among experts as to the real benefit of screening. Although screening tests can be useful in identifying the early signs of prostate cancer, the results of testing
are not always accurate. In fact, for many men, the early stages of prostate cancer have no symptoms, while other men who do show some symptoms may not actually have cancer. In addition to this, the risks associated with treatment for early stage prostate cancer can sometimes outweigh the benefits. For some men, prostate surgery can result in urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction which may have a more significant impact on their life.
The current guidelines vary, but if a man chooses to go ahead with screening then both a PSA blood test and a rectal exami-nation are recommended. If a positive result is returned from either of these tests then additional testing may be recom-mended. Some experts suggest that men should have a first test at around the age of 40, as an initial screening or baseline measure of prostate function, but then may not require any repeat testing until the age of 55 or over. Other experts suggest that testing is not necessary until the age of 55-69, unless there is strong evidence of family history.
So, the decision to screen for prostate cancer is complicated by several issues:
• The lack of strong evidence for the benefit of routine screening,
• The fact that prostate cancer is gener-ally very slow to progress and may not even result in symptoms or harm in some men,
• The fact that the tests which are currently available are not always accurate in predicting cancer (so that a positive test result may not be due to cancer and, alter-nately, cancer may exist in the presence of normal test results), and
• The complications that may result from treatment may not match the benefit
Bob, your decision to go ahead with prostate cancer screening is one you should make in consultation with your doctor, with all the necessary informa-tion for you to make an informed choice based on good knowledge of your risks for developing prostate cancer, the benefit of screening for you, and the potential risks associated with testing. The National Health and Medical Research Council has some useful information at www.nhmrc.gov.au and The Better Health Channel at www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au (search “prostate cancer”).

Last week we talked about how important exercise is. This week I’ll tell you the best exercise in the whole world: It’s the one you actually do, and that usually means you actually enjoy doing it.
I see people get so caught up in what the best exercise is or routine to do; magazines are full of articles saying which fancy exercises in what order and to do four sets or exactly 15 reps... no wonder people get confused.
They show someone with an eight-pack of abs doing compli-cated exercises like sitting balanced with your legs in the air swinging a medicine ball from side to side, and then throw in words like ‘core’ or ‘functional’.
I can’t remember the last time I had to sit on the floor, balance my legs up and swing something heavy side to side in real life. That’s not really functional.
Simple works best. Try starting with a walk and put a couple of bursts in where you go fast for a bit. If you want to check you’re getting a bit fitter, go out and pick a specific route, for example from your gate to the shop for your paper.
Time how long it takes you to walk it the first time; the second time try to get a bit quicker, and third time a bit quicker again. It’s not rocket science but it is science. As your times get quicker you will get fitter. It’s called progressive overload.
Each time you finish a bit tired your body recovers and repairs whichever part is worn out to where you started, but – and this is the secret that it’s all about – it then recovers a little bit more!
For example, have you ever worked with a shovel and rubbed the skin away on your hands? After a rest the skin repairs thicker than it was, creating a callous, so next time it can handle even more work.
You finish a run and you’re out of breath? Your body will over repair so next time the same run makes you less out of breath!
It’s an incredible system and it’s yours. Your body is made to move and improve, so do something you like, don’t make it too fancy and make it fun. This is how you really get results!

As much as I love the hotter months of the year, by the time March rolls around, I am well and truly ready to ditch the shorts and thongs for my favourite winter warmers.
My love of bikinis (you may have read about my obsession in a previous column) makes me appear a summer-lover at heart but in reality, the rest of my personal style screams winter.
I know there are many of you who disagree with the precon-ceived idea that winter is all about black, white and neutral colours but honestly, there is nothing that makes me happier than simple, colourless dressing.
Autumn/winter fashions change from year to year but it looks to me like this year the fashion industry is on my side, with a bounty of black and white clothing, the odd khaki shirt or jacket and camel or beige tones galore.
This season is all about simple day wear, stand out accessories (think brightly coloured handbags and leopard print stilettos) and the comeback of the turtleneck. Also look out for the poncho, which is replacing the standard jacket.
Monochrome outfits will be easily brightened this season with a touch of red lippy and the odd coloured accessory – keep your eyes on bright reds, navy blues, deep greens and surprisingly, pale pinks.
Grab yourself a pair of ‘boyfriend’ jeans and purchase anything with checks or animal prints but don’t go over the top. You might remember that during autumn/winter 2013 we saw loads of patterned stockings... this season they are being replaced with plain colours, so pack the prints away for another year.
Sometimes it feels as though we have just begun to get used to incorporating one new and quirky trend into our personal style when a new season rolls around and introduces a whole new line of weird trends.
It is annoying, especially when it’s something awesome like high waisted denim shorts, but try to look at the bright side: you have the opportunity to change up your look as you experiment with something different.

Key Financial Planning seminar / Tuesday, March 18 sponsored content
K ey Financial Planning is on a mission to make Australians financially wise, starting in the local community.
Key Financial Planning, who is an author-ised representative of Financial Wisdom Limited, has just been recognised with two prestigious industry awards – the 2013 Financial Wisdom National Practice of the Year and 2013 NSW Practice of the Year.
A fixture in the local community for almost 20 years, Key Financial Planning works with their clients to help them real-ise their dreams by imparting financial wisdom.
Rudi Kristiani of Key Financial Planning says: “We’re very proud to receive recogni-tion for exceptional client service in the financial planning industry. Our business is based on creating meaningful relation-ships with our clients and helping to make a real difference in reaching their financial goals. These awards help confirm that we practise what we preach and recognise our committed team and processes. We have capacity to take on new clients and hope these awards help spread the word on the services we provide.”
General Manager of Financial Wisdom, Mark Ballantyne, had great pleasure in presenting Key Financial Planning with the Financial Wisdom National Practice of the Year Award. He said: “This is an incred-ible achievement and one that the local community should be very proud of. This award is highly contested amongst our 360 financial advisers across Australia. It’s a real credit to Key Financial Planning and it is great for the local community to be able
to have access to such a quality financial planning firm on their doorstep.”
Key Financial Planning was also ranked as the top performing Financial Wisdom practice for client engagement in the 2013 Core Data Survey. Mr Ballantyne said: “The key to the practice’s success has been developing meaningful and proactive client relationships.”
With the ever changing landscape of financial services, the Key Financial Planning difference is they don’t just wait for the annual review to roll around.
They provide their clients with quarterly reviews enabling their Superannuation and Allocated Pensions to be appropriately invested in accordance to their financial goals.
When asked about their client relation-ships, Rudi says: “At Key Financial Plan-ning we genuinely hold our clients hands throughout their financial life. This gives our clients confidence and peace of mind. It’s like sharing your life with your aunties and uncles. We enjoy building long term relationships with our clients, delivering
highly personalised quality advice. That is why we are hosting an Information Even-ing at Belmont 16 Foot Sailing Club. This Seminar is designed specifically for people who are considering seeing a financial planner or are unhappy with the level of service they are currently receiving.”
The free seminar will be held at Belmont 16 Foot Sailing Club, The Parade, Belmont on Tuesday, March 18 at 6.30pm.

Singer-songwriter, actor, author, political activist, producer – Steve Earle is one of America’s greatest living storytellers. His tales, encapsulated in songs such as ‘The Galway Girl’, ‘Jerusa-lem’ , ‘Goodbye’s All We Got Left’ , ‘Guitar Town’, and his anthemic ‘Copperhead Road’, have filled 14 albums and earned him three Grammy awards. Two years ago he came to Bluesfest solo, nailed it and sold-out his sideshows to boot. This time he’s bringing The Dukes along for the ride and showcasing his 15th studio album, 'The Low Highway' – a road record written about what he experienced from the window of his tour bus. Backed by a new lineup of The Dukes ( and Duchess) featuring The Mastersons (Chris Masterson on guitars and wife Eleanor Whitmore on fiddle and vocals), Kelly Looney on bass and Will Rigby on drums, Steve Earle rolls through a bumper taster from this new album and his bulging back catalogue.
what's on After making quite the name for herself as
an indie rock torch singer par excellence thanks to such brilliant albums as ‘Real Life’, ‘To Survive’ and ‘The Deep Field’, Joan as Policewoman aka Joan Wasser is back with album number four although this time around it’s a much brassier, neo-soul tinged affair.
While this genre has undergone quite a resurgence in recent years and, as some may argue, mined to death by the likes of Amy Winehouse, Wasser does manage to bring some freshness to proceedings.
The gently soulful ‘Get Direct’ is a definite standout while Wasser is at her vampy and gritty best on ‘Good Together’.
While 'The Classic' isn't destined to live up to its namesake and is in no way the best work in the Joan as Policewoman catalogue, it is a decent listen nonethe-less.
It’s a buddy-buddy movie starring Clint Eastwood at his gruff and cantankerous best and an absurdly guffaw-inducing orangutan. What more could you possibly ask for?
Eastwood stars as Philo Beddoe – a truck driver with a penchant for fighting. With two friends - Orville and Clyde, the orangutan he won on a bet - he roams the San Fernando Valley in search of cold beer, country music and the occasional punch-up.
Sure, it’s rude, crude and very lowest common denominator, but if you’re expecting anything else from Johnny Knoxville and the Jackass crew, you’re in for a rude awakening.
If, however you take this film at face value, it is a laugh-out-loud romp with a surprising amount of heart. The film's loose narrative surrounds 86-year-old Irving Zisman (Knoxville) who must take his eight-year-old grandson, Billy, on a cross-country road trip to reunite Billy with his estranged father.
Along the way, the irresponsible Zisman introduces young Billy to people, places and situations that give new meaning to the term childrearing. Hillarious.

It’s only the beginning
It’s a pretty tacit acknowledgment that you’re onto a good thing when your album continues to wow the music buying public nearly eight months after its release.
That’s exactly the case for Josh Pyke’s fourth studio album ‘The Beginning and the End of Everything’. The album came in at number 7 on the ARIA album chart as well as picking up an ARIA award nomina-tion for best adult contemporary release.
Pyke is smack-bang in the middle of yet another national tour, this time to pro-mote his latest single, and the album’s title track although, as Pyke told TE, the inspiration behind the track came from the unlikeliest of places.
“I was going through a sort of writer’s block,” Pyke said. “This was after ‘Only Sparrows’ came out and I was on tour in the UK promoting it. I was sitting in a ho-tel room in Brighton and I was mucking around with some writing and I was in-terested in the concept of waiting for the muse or the lightning to strike and then I just started writing what became ‘The Be-ginning and the End of Everything’, and the rest of the album just flowed from that – so I guess it is ironic that the inspiration
Stephen BiSSet
MusIc
kind of came about from having trouble finding inspiration.”
When it comes to tapping into the Aus-tralian cultural zeitgeist, Pyke has been making a pretty good fist of things – with four of his albums, 100 per cent in fact, making it to the ARIA top ten. While he was reluctant to pinpoint the reason why his deft turn of phrase and lilting folk-tinged pop resonated so well with audi-ences, he added that it may have some-thing to do with the fact that there is little pretence in his work.
“It is very hard to look at your work ob-jectively like that, but I would say that the music I make tends to be the type of mu-sic that becomes associated with signifi-cant events in people’s lives – you know like summer holidays or weddings. A lot of what I do is very honest and quite per-sonal and people tend to throw their own life experiences into the song and then, I guess, it kind of becomes universal.”
If it’s connection with his audience that Pyke is looking for on his albums, the same can certainly be said of his live show.
“The best shows I’ve ever seen are ones where there is a genuine engagement with the audience. Also it’s a feeling – whether it be a rush of adrenaline from metal show or a feeling of intimacy from an acoustic show – it’s all about that feeling.”

W hen it comes to Michael Jackson, aside from the King of Pop himself, there are few,
if any who do it as good as Kenny Wizz.Despite being regarded as one of the
world’s premier Jackson tribute artists, Wizz told TE that it his 30-year Jackson journey was something he kind of fell into.
“It didn’t just come together at one time – it’s a process of studying and learning that continues today,” he said.
“I always has a love for Michael’s music and wanted to be able to dance as a form of self-expression. I got into street danc-ing in the eighties and then Michael came out with ‘Thriller’ and everyone just went crazy for it. I was doing some street danc-ing at the time and more and more people who saw me perform thought I resembled Michael and the more popular the album became, the more demands there were for me to do what Michael was doing, and the rest is history – no pun intended."
After an eleven-year run at the Riviera Casino in Las Vegas, Wizz branched out with his own critically-acclaimed show ‘HIStory”, and now he’s bringing his ‘HIStory II’ show back to Oz after huge runs down here in 2010 and 2012.
“While we didn’t want to change it too much, we wanted to add some new songs as well as some new production to make it even more spectacular,” he said.
“We want to cover Michael’s whole career, from the Jackson 5 right through and it’s just impossible to cover every-thing. Even if you covered just the hits, you could never do it in a two-hour show.”
Wizz added, since Jackson’s untimely demise, audiences have cast a much closer eye on what he is doing onstage, which he said makes for a more realistic experience.
“People dissect the show a lot more because he really does have a lot of hard-core fans out there,” he said. “For me, it’s all about keeping Michael’s legacy alive by emulating him, not becoming exactly like him and giving people the chance to experience some of the spirit of Michael."

D o the early NWOBM sounds of Iron Maiden get your blood pumping? Does the intense riff-
ing and double-kick madness of ‘Ride The Lightning’-era Metallica make you want to headbang until you’re in danger of developing whiplash? Then you’d do well to get along to the Great Northern this weekend for a healthy dose of metal madness courtesy of Newcastle four-piece Corpse Harvest.
What sets Corpse Harvest apart is the age of the members. Singer Andrew Murdoch has enlisted the talents of his progeny Sage Murdoch (age 11- lead axeman) and Heath Murdoch (age nine – doom blasts) and mate Chad Ross on bass. The boys are gearing up to launch their debut album ‘Infinite Suffering’ and I’m told the title was inspired by what mum goes through when the lads are in the garage practicing. Great stuff!

Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, muscle car mechanic and street racer Tobey (Aaron Paul) gets out of prison determined to settle the score with the man responsible for his false conviction. Tobey tears up the road in a gritty cross-country journey; one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. ‘Need for Speed’ also stars Dominic Cooper, Ramon Rodriguez, and Dakota Johnson.
Celebrated as an entertainment land-mark for over 70 years, the first full-length animated film ever made comes out of the vault especially to close the festival. Snow White, takes refuge in the forest in the house of seven dwarfs to hide from her stepmother, the wicked Queen. But one day while the dwarfs are at their diamond mine, the Queen arrives disguised as an old peddler woman and persuades Snow White to bite into a poisoned apple.
Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men focuses on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Ger-many to rescue artistic masterpiec-es from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.
But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements

If there is one thing that is sorely lacking in the sequel to the vis-ceral 2006 sword and sandal epic it is the direction of Zack Snyder. Snyder, who has brought his unique vision to such films as ‘The Watchmen’ and ‘Man of Steel’, only took on screenplay duties this time around, and it shows.
That’s not to say that this isn’t a visual feast that manages to capture Frank Miller’s (the author of the original graphic novel series) original style almost perfectly – it’s just that it feels like a soulless facsimilie of the original. After the defeat of the Spartans in the original, Persian King Xerxes is on the march against the major Greek City States, with Athens first on the agenda. It is up to Greek Admiral Themistocles to put a stop to Xerxes' advances but must first use the might of the Greek navy to do battle with Artemesia – the vengeful commander of the Persian navy. The blood and gore are ramped up to ten here and even though things got tiresome after the 15th slo-mo limb lopping, it was a decent distraction.
It is not everyday you come across an Australian film as visually breathtaking as 'Tracks'.
Produced by See Saw Films, the production company behind 'The Kings Speech' and 'Oranges and Sunshine', 'Tracks' tells the extraordinary true story of Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska) who in 1977, set off from Alice Springs with four camels and a dog and didn’t stop until reached the Indian Ocean nine months later.
'Girls' star, Adam Driver plays National Geographic photographer, Rick Smolan, who plays Davidson’s on-again-off-again love inter-est/thorn in her side throughout the film but it is Mandy Walker, the cinematographer who is the real star of this flick.
Walker captures the West Australian dessert spectacularly – pull-ing raw beauty and crushing loneliness from the baron and deso-late landscape through aerial shots and sweeping wide angles.
The film may have been just a touch too long but those landscape shots, coupled with an amazingly emotive performance from Wasikowska, more than make up for the slow pace.

Formed in late 2010, The Rockin' Eddie Band first appeared at the Biggest Indoor Rock n Roll event in September 2010. T.R.E.B's aim is to accommodate all forms of 40s, 50s, and 60s classic dance steps. The style of music performed by T.R.E.B varies to say the least - from swing, rockabilly, country and jazz, T.R.E.B plays it all.Rockin Eddie was better known in his younger days as a drummer & Australian Champion Rock n’ Roll Dancer with numerous titles to his credit. In his younger days Eddie ventured far and wide within the Rock n Roll scene. Also, when you consider the members of the band have worked with the likes of Black Feather, Phil Keys’ Band of Light, Reg Lindsay, Dinah Lee and the Atlantics, the word formidable seems a bit of an understatement.

I n and of themselves, bands like Chinchen, the Hell City Glamours, Vaudeville and Dropsaw are pretty
formidable concerns, but when you take members from these bands and put them in a room together, then you have something else entirely.
Featuring the talents of Ben “Dutchy” Holland on bass, Ben Kelly and Mo Mayhem on guitar, Jae Nelson on drums, Dave Bell on sax and Rob Parkes on trombone, Mucho Sonar offer up
an almost irresistible array of horn and adrenaline-fuelled punk rock with just the right amount of metal riffing. Think the likes of Rocket From the Crypt and you’re in the right ballpark.
Rob Parkes told TE that, given every-one was quite familiar musically, Mucho Sonar was a natural progression for all concerned.
“Basically, we’ve all played in bands together at some stage and me and Mo had come out of another band and we were writing songs together so it seemed like the natural thing to do.”
Despite only being a band for a rela-
tively short amount of time, Mucho Sonar have been gaining quite a bit of attention around the traps – not least for their blisteriing and tighter-than-a-tourniquet debut self-titled EP.
“We pretty much recorded all of it at home," Parkes said.
"We didn’t really have any idea how it would come out, but it ended up sound-ing really massive – we’re heaps happy with it” Parkes said.
Catch Mucho Sonar at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, March 16 alongside Drug Mother, the Delta Lions and The Grounds.

O ver the last few years, there’s no doubt that there has been a massive resurgence in the
popularity of vinyl. Sales have been rising - ARIA recently revealed its 2013 wholesale figures, and while CD sales continue to decline, vinyl sales were up 77 per cent on 2012. It’s no surprise that the people of Newcastle love their vinyl, too.
After the success of last year’s inau-gural event, more than 20 stallholders from across the country will take part in the second Hunter Record Fair on Saturday 22nd March. A massive range of both new and second-hand vinyl records and CDs will be on offer, plus books and DVDs. All genres of music will be available, including: country, rock, soul, metal, punk, pop, hip-hop, jazz, blues, reggae, rockabilly, folk, r&b, ska, alternative, house, hardcore punk, electro, indie, new wave, noise and more.
Catch the Hunter Record Fair at the Wickham Croatian Sports Club on Saturday, March 22 from 8am to 4pm. Entry before 9am is $5 and $2 after 9am.

Bennies chasing rainbows
G iven that it was just 12 short months ago that Melbourne-based punks The Bennies’ career
was in doubt after their guitarist was stabbed in the armpit by a bogan punter in Byron Bay, to see where they are now is quite astonishing.
Since the incident, the kings of stoner party jams have toured China, Japan and New Zealand and are still riding high off the release of their genre-bending soph-omore release ‘Rainbows in Space’.
“Yeah, it’s pretty amazing that it’s been almost a year since that stuff in Byron happened,” bass player Craig Selak told TE.
“It was a situation where we didn’t re-ally know what was going to happen with the band so to see where we are now is just awesome.”
When ‘Rainbows in Space’ was re-leased in November last year, pundits were throwing around hyperbole like confetti with some proclaiming it to be the album of 2013 and Selak said the
band put literally everything they had into the making of the album with the end result a miasma of reggae-infused punk rock with more layers than you can poke a stick at.
“The whole idea was more is more - just keep adding s**t,” Selak said.
“The songs were a bit of a mixed bag – there was some stuff that had been kick-ing around for quite a while and there were a couple of tracks that were only written a couple of weeks before the re-cording and I think having those really new songs really helped create a really energetic vibe on the album – we really did put everything into it.”
Selak added that once the current tour wraps up, there is no chance of slowing down – with more Aussie tours planned as well as another visit to China.
“Man, China was just f***ing mental,” he said.
“We’d been to Japan a couple of times before but not China – our friends the Smith Street Band recommended we go over there and we were just blown away so were heading back over there again soon – it’s going to be awesome.”

FunkMonster
While they will be with-out guitarist "Big D", who was unfortunate-ly rushed to a Florida hospital last week, you
can be rest assured that the Southern soul piano maestro Jon Cleary and his band, The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, will be preaching the New Orleans rhythm and blues and funk gospel when they hit Li-zotte’s this weekend.
“The gents will be bringing the monster funk …and invite everyone to come join the party as we bring Mardi Gras to you,” Cleary said.
Described as the funkiest band in the city that has some of the funkiest musi-cians in the world, Jon Cleary and the Ab-solute Monster Gentlemen are the gem in the New Orleans crown – an unabashed riot of gospel harmonies and foundation rocking grooves.
Running the full gamut from street beats to old school rhythm and blues, the party is propelled by Cleary’s vocals and mes-merising piano chops, skills the British-born Cleary picked up as a teenager in New Orleans directly from the masters who invented the style.
“Ultimately, all New Orleans music is about making a joyful noise – even when burying their dead, folks in New Orleans will have a wild jazz band to celebrate the good life,” he said.
Described by country legend Bonnie Raitt as “the ninth wonder of the world”, Cleary’s talents have been in high demand of late, working alongside the likes of Taj Mahal, Doctor John and jazzman John Schofield but he maintains there’s noth-ing like the feeling he gets when the Ab-solute Monster Gentlemen take the stage.

Once it seemed there was no question that a house made a better investment than a unit.
Investors could depend on high rental demand, because most Austral-ians’ idea of “home” was a house on a quarter-acre block.
A house also seemed by definition a better investment because the investor bought not just the building but also the land, which rises in value, while the owner of a unit bought only the build-ing, which depreciates. But the answer is not as clear-cut these days, partly because of issues of housing afford-ability and partly due to changes in the way Australians live and work.
Priorities have shifted, leaving us less time for household chores and yard maintenance. Increasingly people are keen to leave their cars at home, too.
It means more tenants are looking for quality, easy-to-maintain apartments close to transport or in walkable neigh-bourhoods – and this shift is set to drive long-term capital values.
Why do I need landlord insurance?Whether your investment property
is self-managed or managed by a property manager, ‘landlord protection insurance’ is a must.
Landlord protection insurance covers particular risks associated with leasing a property that may not be covered by a typical ‘home and contents’ or ‘strata title’ insurance policy.
For example, landlord insurance protects you from lost rent if a tenant defaults, and also covers any legal expenses relating to personal injuries to tenants or malicious damage to an investment property.
Some policies will even cover contents that could be damaged or stolen – this is particularly important if your investment is partly or fully furnished. Landlord insurance premi-ums fluctuate according to the location and type of investment property, so to find out more visit a specialist such as Terri Scheer (terrischeer.com.au) or contact insurers.

BMW has a rich heritage of creating sporty, dynamic cars with a high degree of driver engagement – most notably in the compact segment - with iconic models such as the two-door BMW 2002 turbo and the more recent and multi-award winning 135i Coupé. Today the newest performance two-door model, the BMW 2 Series Coupé, takes its place beside these legendary vehicles, with enhanced dynamic ability and unrivalled aesthetic appeal.
According to Phil Horton, Managing Director for BMW Group Australia, the successor to the extremely popular 1 Series Coupé offers an even more engag-ing drive.
“The 2 Series Coupé blends stunning good looks with the kind of incredible dynamic talent that can only be delivered by a truly refined driver’s car,” he said.
“Add to this the generous specification levels loaded with the latest in innovative technology and we are very confident that we have a winner on our hands” Horton said.
Adopting the familiar three-box body design, the BMW 2 Series displays the typical characteristics of classic BMW coupés, such as long bonnet, short over-hangs, set back passenger compartment and a sweeping roof line that transitions seamlessly to the rear of the car.
Larger than the outgoing model, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé measures 4,432 mm in length (+72 mm) and 1,774 mm in width (+ 26 mm); however the 2 Series is 5 mm lower at 1,418 mm and presents a more purposeful and powerful stance.

Defending Newcastle District No.1 Grade Saturday Pennant titleholders the Valentine “Lakers” commenced their title defence with a hard fought 59/45 victory over Lambton winning on two of the three rinks.
The quartet of Neil Percival, Ross Levido, Jacob Murray & former Australian representative Sam Laguzza led the foundations for the win defeating Scott Kohler, Gary Young, Chris Evans & Chris Holstein 23/11. Bill Ahoy was the other successful Valentine skip-per defeating Craig Thompson 18/15. Andrew Smith scored a point for Lambton edging out David Govan 19/18.

Lennon Scott lost by the odd shot 21/20 to Ryan Freedman.

Newcastle NatioNal Park cro-quet club is holding a Croquet and Gateball “Come & Try Day” this Sunday, 16th March. Lessons will be conducted from 10am to 2pm. Bring your own lunch. Tea and Coffee supplied. Please wear flat-soled shoes and a sun hat. Newcastle National Park Croquet Club is located between the tennis courts and athletics track at 25 National Park Street, Newcastle West. Call 4969 2268 Croquet is relatively easy to understand and fun to play and requires only one basic skill, that of propelling a ball with a degree of accuracy. The principal difference between croquet and most other outdoor sports in that croquet requires delicacy and skill, rather than speed or strength.
It also requires tactical ability and forward planning rather than quick reflexes. Think of the tactics as being akin to a board game such as chess and the accuracy being akin to a pastime such as snooker but with the added bonus of both fresh air and leisurely exercise. The game is played by both sexes on equal terms and thanks to a comprehensive handicapping system players of vastly different ability can play on level terms.
Gateball is played on a green about half the size of a normal croquet green – five players to each team – a game lasts 30min and is played quickly, only 10 sec allowed for each turn – played extensively in the Asian countries although mostly only teams from Japan and China come to play in our National and State Championships.
MiNister for sPort aND recrea-tioN, Gabrielle Upton, has encouraged sporting clubs with medium to large infrastructure plans to apply for funding as part of the ClubGrants Category 3 program, which was announced today by Minister for Hospitality, George Souris.
“This is an opportunity not to be missed for sporting clubs and other recreational organisations to get access to a level of funding that will allow their dreams to become a reality,” Minister Upton said.
“The fund, totalling $12 million, will provide grants between $500,000 and $2 million for these important projects.
“Whether it is for a new clubhouse or grandstand, or an upgrade of playing or
training facilities, this represents a signifi-cant funding opportunity.
“In my six months as Minister for Sport and Recreation, I have met with many sporting organisations who pour their heart and soul into their sports. They have a vision for maximising the number of people who can play their game, and these grants will go a long way to helping them achieving those goals.
“I congratulate Minister Souris for the decision to focus this round of the Club-Grants Category 3 program towards sport and recreation projects in local communi-ties.”

A dam Taggart’s 11th goal of the season saw the Newcastle Jets secure a 1-0 win over Melbourne Heart at Hunter
Stadium on Saturday night. The passion in the club spilled over at
training on Monday with Mark Birighitti and Taylor Regan having to be seperated after a headted clash.
Both players met with club officials following the incident with Jets CEO Robbie Middleby saying the pair have put the incident behind them to focus on Saturday’s F3 Derby against the Central Coast Mariners at Central Coast Stadium.
“You want your players to have a competitive nature and show passion on the field because that’s a key ingredient for success in any sport,” Middleby said.
“However, it’s important they don’t cross the line and let their emotions get the better of them.
“As a club, we’ve spoken to both Mark and Taylor about the incident and have dealt with the matter internally.”
The visitors had the first chance of Saturday's match inside the opening minute, with Mate Dugandzic deliver-ing a cross from the right flank that was

Win over Heart has Jets within one point of top six as teammates clash at training
headed just wide of the target by Iain Ramsay.
The Jets’ first opportunity came three minutes later, with Adam Taggart hold-ing the ball up well on the edge of the area and drawing a foul from Patrick Kisnorbo.
Craig Goodwin, who was a late replace-ment for Joel Griffiths, stepped-up to take the set piece and drove the ball underneath the wall, only to see Heart shot-stopper Andrew Redmayne get down low and wrap the ball up.
The Heart went close to taking the lead 10 minutes into the contest, with Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti coming out to claim a corss from the left, only to miss the ball after being challenged by Heart big-man Orlando Engelaar.
The loose ball fell to Jonatan Germano, who hooked the ball back towards goal only to see his shot ricochet off the post. Josh Brillante made a cricual scrambling clearance to ensure there was no follow-up effort for the Heart.
The Jets are now only one point out of the top six and are away to the Mariners at Central Coast Stadium this Saturday night at 7.45pm.

I t's only round one, but the Newcas-tle Knights’ NSW Cup side got some revenge on Penrith for knocking them out of last year's competition
with an impressive 24-14 win over the Panthers at Sportingbet Stadium on Saturday.
In a re-match of last year’s Preliminary Final, won 36-32 by the then Windsor Wolves, the Knights' charged to victory on the back of a strong second half performance where they scored 14 points and only conceded four.
New recruit Matt Minto was a standout at halfback in his official debut match for the Club, impressing with a strong kick-ing game that led to a number of tries.
The former premiership-winning
Mackay Cutters No.7 looked more than capable at this level and proved he'll be a valued member of the Knights' squad going forward. Winger Chanel Mata'utia snared a hat-trick in the triumph, while forwards Pat Vaivai, Korbin Sims and Matt Hilder all looked good in the win.
Knights' coach Rick Stone was extremely happy with the win, admit-ting his team will only get better with time. "Overall it was a really satisfying win given we had a fairly short prepara-tion," Stone says. "We only had our play-ers for a couple of sessions, so we’ll get better. We had 11 or 12 full-time players and the others were part-time players.
The Knights will play Mounties at 4.15pm at Hunter Stadium on Sunday.
NSW Cup win first-up
Mamo's hat-trick
The Knights' NSW Cup has made a winning start to the season
rugby league
I nspired by a hat-trick to fullback Jake Mamo, the Newcastle Knights' NYC side kicked-off their 2014 campaign in style with a 34-22 win
against the reigning Under 20s premiers the Penrith Panthers at Sportingbet Stadium on Saturday.
Returning to the Holden Cup ranks after impressing in pre-season training with the Club's NRL squad this summer, Mamo showed his class in attack and defence.
The Gosford-born flyer was well supported by Knights' new recruit Jaelen Feeney, who starred at halfback with his composure and strong kicking game.
Feeney's halves partner Jacob Gagai was also impressive in his maiden NYC match after playing in the SG Ball last season.
The younger brother of Knights' centre Dane Gagai proved his worth and even bagged a special solo try in the second half.
Of course beating the defending NYC premiers is a great result, but most pleas-ing for coach Michael Crawley was his side's defence.
Newcastle started the match full of running and dominated possession in the opening exchanges.
New recruit Jaelen Feeney looked sharp in attack, especially with his kicking game that regularly found open space.
The former Bulldog was at his brilliant
best eight minutes into the second half when he put on a perfect face-ball for forward Luke Yates to score.
The Panthers raced out of the blocks to open up an 18-0 lead after 30 minutes but Mamo had pulled one back for the visitors by halftime.
Tryscorers for Newcastle, apart from Mamo, were Luke Yates and Jacob Gagai.
Winger Bryce Donovan kicked seven goals from seven attempts.
The Knights have enough tough match this weekend when they take on Canberra at Hunter Stadium on Sunday.

N ewcastle Knights coach Wayne Bennett will monitor playmakers Darius Boyd, Kurt Gidley and Tyrone Roberts in the lead-up to Sunday’s
first home game of the season against Canberra at Hunter Stadium after all three were injured in the 30-8 loss to Penrith last Saturday. In a match described by Bennett as a 'crazy', Boyd suffered a hamstring injury in the first half and didn't return for the remainder of the match.
Gidley also left the field in the first stanza with concussion after copping a heavy hit and remained on the bench.
Roberts was another casualty in the second half with concussion. The No.7 tried to stop Panthers lock Adam Docker from scoring in the 64th minute, but came off second best and was also forced to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines. "It’s a tough call at the moment and I don’t know what I’m going to do," Bennett said after the match about who could replace Boyd, Gidley and Roberts if any were unavailable for this week.
"We’ve got two with concussion and one with

a hamstring, so some major ones. I don’t know (about Boyd). The hamstring could be a week or it could be three but it could be more than a week I would assume. The concussions, well Kurt still isn’t good at the moment.
"So you’d have to assume he’d be border line, while Tyrone is starting to come good."
Centre Dane Gagai played out the match at fullback in Boyd's absence and Bennett was happy with his effort.
The veteran coach wasn't sure if Gagai would replace Boyd at No.1 though and would also have to wait on scan results on Boyd's hamstring before making any final decision.
"We’ve got to find a centre if we put him (Dane) at fullback and we’ve got to find a centre and someone else," he says. "We’ll also have to find another hooker, but it’s too early for me to call on those. I was happy with Dane’s performance though. He got a couple of wicked bounces there, but if he had played there on a regular basis he would have picked those a little better. That’s just time and experience and he hasn’t had that yet, but when he carried the ball he was great and enthusiastic.
"Most of them are pretty ok, it’s just bumps and bruises after the game."
Sunday’s match gets underway at 6.30pm.
