Greggs Bakery expansion

Greggs Bakery appears to be going from strength to strength. The store which opened 131 new stores last year giving them a total of 1,854, have announced they are to open a further 130 stores in 2018. The location of the stores is yet to be

announced.

T Levels

The ESFA has issued information for providers who are considering delivering the first three T Levels in the 2020/21 academic year. The first three classroom based T levels will be:

• Digital route: Software applications design and development • Construction route: Building services engineering • Education and Childcare route: Education

The government’s Post-16 Skills Plan, published in July 2016, accepted all 34 recommendations from the Independent Panel on Technical Education. This included the introduction of a new framework of 15 technical routes to skilled employment for 16 to 19-year olds, which are either classroom-based (T levels) or work-based (apprenticeships). Eleven of these routes will be delivered as classroom or workshop based programmes called T levels.

Teacher training applicants down on last year

Applications for teacher-training are 6,640 or 29% less than last year according to the latest UCAS figures. To put this in context there were 42,650 teacher-training applications up to the beginning of 2018, a drop of 31% at the same time the previous year. With eight months to go before closure of the 2018 intake there is a high demand for talented individuals, particularly in such subjects as maths and physics.

24 weird jobs you never knew existed

An interesting article has been published entitled '24 weird jobs you never knew existed’. There is a good infographic which accompanies the article for those who would like to download it. It is well worth a read and may inspire ‘outside the box’.

Apprenticeships on the rise

Newly published figures from the Department of Education show a rise in apprenticeship starts for the first time since the levy came into play last April. In the period August - October 2017 there were 114,400 starts and whilst this is 26% lower than the same period last year it is a marked increase on the previous quarter when only 48,000 embarked on an apprenticeship. Anne Milton, Skills Minister, puts the difference down to a period of significant change requiring employers needing time to adjust to the levy. An encouraging survey, undertaken in December by the CBI, found that almost half of businesses intend to recruit apprentices in the next 12 months.

Drawing the Future

Education and Employers, a charity with the aim of fostering links between schools/colleges and employers, has published research on the career aspirations of primary school children from around the world. "By a considerable margin (over 10 percentage points), the most popular job for children in the UK was either a sportsman or sportswoman... This was followed by teacher, vet and social media and gaming". The report contains findings on influencers, gender stereotypes, social background etc.

Higher Education Projects

As part of the Government's support for its industrial strategy, it has channelled £6.1 million though HEFCE to support over 30 universities and colleges to deliver new and enhanced higher courses in conjunction with industry - from advanced engineering to data analytics, and from artificial intelligence to bioscience. In London and the South this includes:

• Brunel University - £200,000 - London Centre of Flood Risk and Resilience (CFR2) skills for flood resilient infrastructure

• Fareham College - £120,000 - Development of Mathematics for Engineering

• University College London - £191,474 - Enhancing productivity and supporting growth of the UK Advanced Therapies Sector

• University of Chichester - £200,000 - Co-designing curriculum innovation to address Health and Social Care skills gaps in Sussex, Surrey, Hants and IOW

• University of Southampton - £199,843 - Producing a skilled labour force via curriculum development and bespoke training

Calling young entrepreneurs

The Princes Trust are seeking young people with a great business idea. The Young Innovators' programme is open for anyone aged 18 - 30 who wants to turn their ideas into a reality. There are 12 regional live events happening across the UK in the first three months of this year. Those who are awarded the 'award package' will receive an allowance to cover living costs, 1-1 coaching and funding to support specific needs such as training, office space, travel, etc. For those who do not win an award package they can still access the Innovation Module and receive support from Enterprise Online. For eligibility criteria it is necessary to sign up with Princes Trust online.

What the future holds (no link)

A couple of very different reports take a look at the future of work. Workforce of the future: The Competing Forces shaping 2030 published by PWC suggests that the extent to which society moves in a more collective or individual, small or corporate direction, will affect how the workplace evolves and how this will affect employment prospects and future working lives.

Page 4: LMI Bulletin - Supporting Inspiration · • The trend of rising self-employment has been evident in all regions of the UK with the largest increases being in London (rising from

The other is from Centre for Cities 2018 which includes a report on the impact of AI and technology on the size of the workforce in the towns and cities (primary urban areas) of Britain. You can follow their methodology and see if you agree with the outcome which is that jobs most affected will be in the following occupations:

• Sales Assistants and Retail Cashiers (19.5% of jobs at risk in cities)

• Other Administrative occupations 11.0%

• Customer Service occupations 9%

• Administrative occupations: Finance 7%

• Elementary storage occupations 6.6%

It is good to see that three of the South Central cities/towns appear in the list of those least affected by automation and globalisation, namely, Brighton and Portsmouth (19%) and Worthing (16%). This compares to a national average of 21%.

Diversity for all in apprenticeships

The Government have announced they plan to increase the number of minority background apprentices by 20% by 2020. The latest figures show that 11 percent of total apprenticeship starts in the last year were for people from a BAME background, an increase of three percent on the previous year. The Department of Education’s ‘5 Cities Project’ focuses on helping this group of people into apprenticeships - something that has been welcomed by the AoC.

Applications for jobs rises dramatically

After a somewhat cautious few months, a confident start to the new year has been seen according to job market data from CV-Library who state that applications have risen by 83.6% in January. Southampton saw an 85.9% growth, Portsmouth 78.3% and London 77.2%. In particular, the following industries saw their applications soar:

• Marketing 93.1%

• Manufacturing 90.1%

• Accounting 88.4%

• Construction 87.1%

Legal firms’ expansion

Specialist recruiter, Clayton Legal, says that 66% of law firms are looking to expand the number of employees over the next year to cope with increasing demand for services. Skills shortages within the profession are the main challenge for the profession together with staff retention.

BT to hire more engineers

Openreach is to hire 3,000 engineers to ensure it reaches its goal to provide ultra-fast internet to the UK.

Good news for the gig economy

Excellent news for ‘gig’ workers. Many of the recommendations in the Taylor Review published last year have been taken on board by the government including the rights of gig workers to get holiday and sick pay. In addition, the Low Pay Commission are being asked to consider higher minimum wages for those on zero contracts. There will also be a crackdown on sectors employing unpaid interns who are doing the job of a paid worker.

Self-employment

Many self-employed have irregular working hours which makes it more difficult to produce accurate data and measurement of data has relied on surveys. ONS have published an article which can be accessed via the link. A summary of some of the data provided is shown below:

• 4.8 million people (that's 15.1% of the 2017 labour force) work on a self-employed basis

• The trend of rising self-employment has been evident in all regions of the UK with the largest increases being in London (rising from 13% to 17.4% of the labour force – an increase of 4.4 percentage points),

• The South East (an increase of 3.7 percentage points) between the financial year ending 2001 and the financial year ending 2016.

• In absolute terms, around half the self-employed are located within London, the South East and the South West.

• Full-time self-employment growth among the 16 to 24 age group rose slightly just before the economic downturn but has remained relatively flat since 2008.

• In comparison, part-time self-employment grew strongly over the period. This meant by 2016, the share of ages 16 to 24 in part-time self-employment in relation to the total employed in this

age group increased to 32.7%, compared with 19.9% in 2001.

• While part-time self-employment grew strongly for the 16 to 24 age group, both full-time and part-time self-employment grew just as strong for those aged 65 and above.

• Among male workers, part-time self-employment grew the fastest between 2001 and 2016, while the growth in full-time employees and self-employment remained broadly flat. In comparison, both full-time and part-time self-employment grew strongly among females over the same period.
