O U R M I S S I O NThe Mission of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association
is to secure private gifts and financial support for medical education,
research, land acquisition, and unique hospital programs; to guide the
investment and disbursement of those funds for the support of Lawrence
Memorial Hospital; and to help sustain Lawrence Memorial Hospital as
a community hospital. The Association also provides opportunities for
people to share in the mission of the hospital through philanthropy.
Although the Association is incorporated as a separate organization, and
is not involved in the administration or operation of the hospital, all
Association policies are guided by the mission of the hospital, and the
hospital’s dedication to excellence in health care for all people.

life less difficult for each other?” George Eliot
While 2011 was another volatile year for the financial markets, I can assure you that
gifts to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association are in good hands. Without
the support of our generous donors, community and hospital staff we would not be able
to continue to provide state-of-the-art equipment to our hospital departments, provide
valuable scholarships to our staff, and build our Endowment to secure a solid future for
Lawrence Memorial Hospital. It has been an honor to serve the LMH Endowment as its 2011
Board president. However, following in the footsteps of dedicated and respected community
members and past presidents such as Stan Zaremba, Jane Eldredge and Dr. Richard Orchard
has been no simple task.
Though daunting, the economic headwinds did not deter the efforts of our staff, board
and volunteers in maximizing our financial support of LMH. Always inspiring, our dedicated
staff provided more than $70,000 during the annual LMH Employee Campaign to support
programs that strengthen the capabilities of LMH employees. The Penny Jones Golf
Tournament, in its 30th year, raised a record $138,000 and hosted a field of 360 golfers.
Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer raised more than $60,000 with a record 750 attendees.
And our Small Town Big Cause runs raised close to $15,000 of which a portion stayed in the
communities of Baldwin City, Eudora and Tonganoxie to support local wellness initiatives.
Many of our gifts have been driven by patients and their friends and families who have
felt empowered to make a difference at LMH. Thanks to the Miss Megan Fund, we were
able to renovate the Segebrecht Room in the Family Birthing Center, providing a comfort-
able place for extended stays for families whose babies require extra care. After losing a
close family friend to breast cancer, Mario Chalmers and the Mario V. Chalmers Foundation
provided a $25,000 gift to found Mario’s Closet. Mario’s Closet provides custom solutions for
the visible effects cancer and other illnesses can have on the body. Jamie Barkes Pursley,
who spent the final year of her five-year battle with breast cancer at LMH, had a final wish
to renovate the infusion rooms in the LMH Oncology Center. Thanks to the efforts of her
close friends, Jamie’s Wish has raised close to $120,000 to fulfill her wish. The largest gift in
LMH Endowment history was received from the charitable remainder unitrust of the Kreider
family. This gift of $1.2 million combined with the support from our annual programs, major
gifts and endowed funds enabled the Endowment to transfer $2,295,285 to LMH and the
community in 2011.
One of my grandfather’s favorite quotes was “service is the rent we pay for the space
we occupy on this earth.” Sidney Garrett, a dedicated servant for LMH, lived her life in this
manner. Sadly we lost Sidney to cancer this year. Everyone in the LMH Endowment family
will honor her with their continued commitment to make Lawrence Memorial Hospital the
best community hospital in the nation.

H . P. “ P E N N Y ” J O N E S G O L F T O U R N A M E N TA record-setting 360 golfers
came out for the 30th annual
H. P. “Penny” Jones Golf
Tournament on September 9.
The event grossed $188,871,
including an anonymous gift of $30,000 in honor of the 30th an-
niversary. Over the last 30 years, the Penny Jones Golf Tournament
has raised more than $1 million! We could not have had this kind
of success without the help of our volunteers. This year, more than
120 volunteers gave their time to the Penny Jones tournament.
LMH departments hosted eight hospitality tents throughout the
course. These tents help make the Penny Jones not only one of the
largest, but also one of the most fun, tournaments in the region.

Thanks to the support of our
donors and friends, 2011 was
another record-setting year for
Lawrence Memorial Hospital
Endowment Association.

LMH South into new space at
the main LMH campus. A portion
of this move was funded by the
Sunderland Grant.

S T E P P I N G O U T A G A I N S T B R E A S T C A N C E RA record-setting number of
attendees helped to celebrate
the 19th annual Stepping Out
Against Breast Cancer dance.
More than 750 people danced
the night away at the Crown Toyota Pavilion. This year’s event
grossed $71,283 for breast cancer early detection and awareness.
The most moving part of the evening occurred when more than 50
survivors took part in the Survivors Ceremony.
H O O P S F O R M E N ’ S H E A LT HIn June, LMHEA held the first
annual Hoops for Men’s Health
event at Allen Fieldhouse.
Hoops for Men’s Health began
as an initiative to educate
men about the importance of
practicing good health habits.
The event featured a luncheon
with Sheahon Zenger, KU
athletic director, as the keynote
speaker. Following the lunch,
participants took advantage
of a health fair with booths
that focused on men’s health.
The highlight of the afternoon
offered a chance for teams of
four to compete in a free-throw
contest on the court.
J A M I E ’ S W I S HBefore 35-year-old Jamie Barkes
Pursley died of breast cancer,
she left her friends with some
pretty strong marching orders.
When Jamie learned that her
breast cancer was terminal,
she wanted to leave something
tangible for others who would also fight cancer. She wanted the
infusion rooms in the Oncology Center at Lawrence Memorial
Hospital where she spent countless hours receiving chemotherapy
treatments to look more like a place of refuge and less like a
hospital. Jamie’s friends organized a variety of fundraisers that
helped raise $120,000, enough to make Jamie’s Wish come true.
The much-awaited dream of a
new medical building in Eudora
became a reality with the
opening of LMH Eudora Medical
Park. The 10,500-square-foot
building is the new home of
Eudora Family Care and family
physicians Dr. Daniel Dickerson
and Dr. Elizabeth Stamper and
staff. The practice now boasts
11 exam rooms and imaging
equipment in a bright, modern,
sun-filled facility. In addition,
LMH Therapy Services is offering
outpatient therapy services at
the new location, and Byrne’s
Pharmacy is leasing space in
the building. About 250 people
attended the open house and
ribbon cutting.
J U N EExpansion of the Laboratory was
completed.

E M P LO Y E E G I V I N G C A M PA I G NThe Employee Giving campaign
is a way for LMH associates to
contribute and provide support
for their fellow employees.
LMH associates lead by example;
they step up to the challenge
and support each other and the community. In 2011, 780 LMH
employees raised $60,010 in support of various programs,
including assistance for LMH families in need, an employee
education fund, and financial help to provide pharmaceutical
needs and durable medical equipment to indigent patients.
G R A N T SIn 2011, LMH and LMHEA received $65,634 in grants from
the William T. Kemper Foundation, The Sunderland Foundation,
the Topeka Community Foundation and Toyota Motor Credit
Corporation.
L A D I E S N I G H T O U TLadies Night Out was held in
October in collaboration with
the Downtown Lawrence, Inc.
business association. Women
came out in droves to shop for
a great cause! They enjoyed
discounts at local restaurants
and retail stores in downtown
Lawrence. The event raised
$3,335 and all proceeds
benefited Mario’s Closet.
J U LYThe Internal Medicine Group

magazine named LMH one of
the nation’s 154 Most Wired
Hospitals based on progress in
adoption, implementation and
use of information technology
in infrastructure, business and
administrative management,
clinical quality and safety,
and care continuum.
The LMH kitchen was closed
for renovation and is reopening
in January 2012. A temporary
kitchen and arrangements
with LMH Originals restaurants
helped to meet the food
preparation needs of patients,
staff and visitors.
M A R I O ’ S C LO S E TMario’s Closet opened at LMH on July 22. A comforting place
where people can find restored confidence, dignity and hope after
their lives have been affected by cancer or other illnesses, it was
founded by the Mario V. Chalmers Foundation and Mario Chalmers,
member of the 2008 national champion University of Kansas men’s
basketball team and current NBA player with the Miami Heat.
With the Chalmers family’s wish to help cancer patients and
survivors, LMH worked with Lawrence businesses to design and build this complement to services
offered through the LMH Oncology Center. The LMH Auxiliary manages the shop. Anyone is welcome
to shop at Mario’s Closet.

Big Cause 5k run/walks were
kicked off in Tonganoxie July 23,
followed by Eudora on July 30
and in Baldwin City on
August 27. The three events
grossed $14,800. A total of 222
people participated this year.
The goal of these events is to
promote community wellness.
This year, LMH Endowment
Association is giving half of
the net proceeds back to these
communities. One grant per
community has been made
available to implement a
wellness initiative.

by a panel of Lawrence women. In November we partnered with
the Douglas County Community Foundation to present “Retiring

M I S S M E G A N F U N DThe Miss Megan Fund, named for
Megan Girard, was established
by her parents to remodel the
Segebrecht Room. This room,
originally established by
Dr. Stephen Segebrecht and his
family, is made available at no
charge to families whose newborns need a little extra care. The
Girards, grateful for the accommodations while Megan got well,
started the fund to extend well wishes to other families going
through bumpy beginnings with their tiny little ones. More than
$4,000 was raised to help purchase new furnishings for the room.

Her family, appreciative of the
care and hospitality shown by
the LMH staff, established a

the hospital through the annual
Penny Jones Golf Tournament,
memorial gifts of $725 added
to the LMH Endowment.

Donors like you make LMH a true community hospital. Your support makes it possible for LMH to give
a human touch while providing state-of-the-art medical care. Whether we are caring for you, your
family, your friends, or someone you have yet to meet, your dollars are an integral part of that care.
