STINkHORN@ Bureau

From 7th NovemberBureau presents Stinkhorn, Jacob Cartwright’s first solo exhibition, and the inaugural exhibition in the gallery’s new space. The exhibition features new and recent works, which unite divergent and eclectic influences - surrealism, natural history, folklore, myth, Americana, and old Europe - to explore a range of cultural archetypes and fabricated motifs. Cartwright’s individual approach highlights incongruous connections between things, presenting imagery drawn from a combination of the real and imagined.Jacob Cartwright lives and works in Manchester but has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and Europe, and in the USA.Cartwright also works in collaboration with Nick Jordan, most recently exhibiting as a duo

in Practical Truths at Castlefield Gallery, Manchester. They have a forthcoming exhibition Cairo at Cornerhouse, Manchester, opening in January 2010, which features a new film installation inspired by the writings of 19th century artist, ornithologist and frontiersman John James Audubon renowned for his epic publication The Birds of America. It’s the perfect stopping off point on a weekend stroll around the city.Bureau, 60 Port Street, Manchester, M1 2EQ, open Wednesday-Friday, 12-6pm and Saturday 12-5pm and by appointment. For more information visit:bureaugallery.com

from the private collections of producers, dancers and photographers including the legendary Beezer, photographer of the Wild Bunch before they became Massive Attack; the inimitable Normski and former Hip-Hop Connection lensman Richard Reyes.British Hip Hop is about to get the recognition and kudos it deserves with the story of how the musical genre has developed and influenced most modern day music.Contributors to the exhibition include Normski, DMC, Greg Wilson and DJ Milo to name but a few.The exhibition is on every day until March 2010 and is free to enter.

Standing proud on John Dalton Street, Ithaca is the £4 million venue that opened back in 2008. It’s dramatically decorated with black glittering walls and chic chandeliers. On offer is a mix of dishes from across Asia resulting in an extensive and mouth watering menu. Our extremely informed server explained that at Ithaca the menu is based on sharing, similar to tapas style but of much higher quality. Being novices at this style of dining, my guest and I asked to be surprised and we

were impressed with a mixture of different types of Sushi. The California Roll (£7.45) is Maki Sushi, served with Rice on the outside of the roll and packed to the brim with Tiger Prawns and Asparagus. The Tuna Sashimi (£7.00) is raw fish so an acquired taste and was served completely fresh without seasoning and cut perfectly. To complete the starters, I opted for simple steamed Edamame (£4.30) sautéed with Chilli and Cinnamon and was blown away by how such a simple dish can have so much flavour.Ithaca recommends two sushi plates, one small plate and one main dish per diner so s I ordered Sautéed Japanese Mushrooms (£7.45) served with Red Chilli’s,

We’ve been living with a black cloud over our heads for some time now. It’s been doom and gloom for far too long and although Large doesn’t advocate splurging unnecessarily, it’s nice to indulge in a spot of fine dining from time to time. This month, Large has pinpointed its two favourite hotspots for high end cuisine.

Page 23: LM7

Fine Green Beans and Asparagus. Again fused with flavour and quite a kick from the Chilli’s.We also ordered Steamed Mussels (£9.50) served with a rich broth which tasted good enough to eat on its own as a soup. Again the Mussels tasted fresh and were huge. You pay more than

most restaurants in Manchester for this dish at Ithaca, but the mussels served are twice the size as anywhere else and quality is undoubtedly much better. For mains my guest tucked into Ithaca Duck with Spiced Carrots and Raisins dressed with Nashi Pear and Sake Soy Sauce (£20.15). Top

marks for beautiful presentation. The duck is slowly cooked then left to rest for five minutes resulting in the meat being tender, flavoursome and juicy. We ordered Steamed Spinach with Goma Dressing (£4.05) which was the perfect accompaniment. It seems that Ithaca cook even the smallest items on the menu to the highest standards. Finally for mains I opted for the Chicken Yakatori served with Sweet Potato Mash (£15.95). The chicken skewers were mixed with vegetables and the sauce was delicious, sweet enough without being bitter. The only minor complaint was that after eating

starters, there was too much mash (not often you can complain about too much food) but overall, all of the courses were delicious.Walking away from Ithaca, my guest and I both agreed that we would most definitely be back. Yes, the prices are slightly above average for the city centre but the dining experience is fantastic. The staff know every ingredient on the menu, where it’s sourced from, make excellent recommendations and each dish is cooked to perfection so when it’s quality you’re looking for, take a trip to Ithaca.

You could definitely say this is a well hidden restaurant, perched on the upper floors of the statuesque glass Urbis building. You could also definitely say that if you want dinner with a view then this restaurant has to be the best choice in the city. The Modern gives its customers a glorious, unobstructed view of the city centre, and if you’re lucky, you might even get to see a magical sun set.Fresh from its award for ‘Restaurant of The Year’ at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival awards, The Modern serves gourmet cuisine but also has an extensive wine and cocktail list to compliment its food offering. The cocktail menu is detailed enough to have you reading it for hours with a snippet of the history of each type of cocktail and illustrations on how they

are made including the Martini, Aperitif and Restorative cocktails (designed to give you a little pick me up!). The menu is packed full of traditional favourites mixed with house specialities including the White Lion Daiquiri (£7.50) made with Mount Gay, Lemon, Sugar, Grenadine, Bitters and Homemade Falernum; zippy, zingy with a good kick and infused with flavour. The wine list takes over four pages of the menu with bottles ranging from £15.30-£79. If you’re a fan of the stronger stuff, there are 20 different whiskies you can choose from on the spirits menu.My guest and I opted to share the Potted Wild Mushrooms, Pickled Walnuts and Wholemeal Toast (£5.50) to start which had a very smoky flavour and added to the hot bread really fuelled the flavour. For mains my guest chose off

the specials menu and tried the Braised Breast of High Peak Lamb, Garlic Potatoes, Buttered Spinach and Chanterelles (£15.50). In terms of well cooked lamb this really did come up trumps with the meat just falling away in juicy layers and then melting in the mouth.I went for the Pot Roasted Goosnargh Chicken Breast with Braised Leeks, Mustard and Cheshire Smoked Bacon (£12.50). The dish was well presented with a powerful richness from the smoked bacon which was unexpected. The server recommended this to be served with Carrot and Swede Mash (£3.50), made like Grandma makes it, just perfect. For desserts, the Warm Vanilla Rice Pudding with Strawberry Compote (£5.00) was to die for. Comfort food at its best! Creamy and sweet

and the compote made such a lovely change from the typical jam usually served with this. The Modern’s menu is a well balanced mix of contemporary dishes but with traditional English touches, served with flair and passion. As fine food restaurants go, the view is stunning however the only negative aspect is that the interior decoration is fairly average so don’t be expecting lush furnishings and decadent lighting, the focus is on the food.

The festive season is almost upon us and at Forever Manchester we’ve got a few ideas to help you through the mayhem and spread a little Mancunian cheer.

Christmas cards look pretty but all that writing, and all those stamps can become a little tedious. Why not take the modern philanthropic approach and instead make a donation to Forever Manchester, uploading your Christmas message to Forever Manchester Island and emailing all your contacts directing them to the site to receive their message of good cheer.

Similarly, if you don’t fancy trawling up and down Market Street to do your Christmas shopping and have tired of buying the usual charity goat or cow from Oxfam, then why don’t check out all the virtual properties you can buy on Manchester Island – the perfect gift for someone who loves Manchester. By making the donation you can buy the property, allotment or record store on the island for one month, six

months or forever, and can brand it up with the name , message and weblink that you want – you don’t get more personal than that.

This is also the time of year for making plans for the year ahead, and setting goals – Forever Manchester has plenty to offer its followers – why not run your own fundraiser for us – a band night, a cake sale, a girls lunch or a sponsored streetdance – whether you raise a fiver or £5k we can put it to great use. Or you can just sign up to our mailing list at forevermanchester.com, join us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to keep up to date with everything we’ve got going on.

And the best Christmas present of all is that every £1 donation we receive for Forever Manchester will be matched by the Government thanks to their Grassroots challenge. So come on, join us and spread a little Christmas cheer!

MaNCHESTER MEN UNITE FOR MOvEMbERManchester is set to become a city of Moustaches (Mo’s) in November as males unite in raising vital cash for The Prostate Charity in Movember. Don’t be alarmed if you notice that your male work colleagues start resembling Big Foot, it’s likely that they’ve not misplaced their razor; they’re just helping out an extra special cause. The moustache is the iconic symbol of the charity. All guys need to do is register at movember.com and start on 1st November with a clean shaven face. Participants then become ‘Mo Bros’ and for the remainder of the month they have to grow and groom their moustache raising money along the way.Movember culminates at the end of the month with the official ‘shave-off’. The Gentry Grooming in Manchester have kindly offered to give free shaves to all Mo Bros to rid them of unwanted facial hair. Just call your nearest salon to make an appointment in the

month of Movember and if you’re sporting a Mo a stylist will keep it on order for you on the house. It’s not all about the Mo Bro’s, Mo Sistas can also lend their support to male friends and loved ones by drumming up more sponsorship, organising fundraising events or even just showing your love for the mo! Movember started back in 2003 with 30 guys in a bar in Australia who decided to unite to show their support for prostate cancer by growing mos. The following year this group had grown to 450 and the gang raised $100,000. The success of the mo rapidly grew and Movember

attracted over 124,000 participants in 2008 and raised nearly $18 million.UK Mo Bro’s in the last two years have raised over £2 million and in 2009 more and more are showing love for the mo!The statistics are fairly shocking. One in eleven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and it’s the most common cancer affecting men in the UK. Alarmingly, we lose one man every hour to the disease.Mo Bro’s of Manchester, we salute you and wish you the very best of luck in your mo-growing month.www.movember.com

FOOTIE FEvERThe 2009 Manchester Press Association Charity 5-Aside Football Tournament took place last month with 13 teams from Manchester’s media industries battling it out.The annual event is to raise money for NABS, the support organisation for the marketing communications industry, offering emotional and financial support as well as practical and professional advice to those most in need. With a cheerleading troop on the sidelines to spur on the teams (however most of the guys were more interested in the cheerleading than the game in hand – perhaps a reason for some of the teams poor performances!). There were trials and tribulations as all competitors gave it their all in their quest to be crowned champions. After an enduring performance, Mediacom thrashed SMRS in the final to be victorious winners, adding this sought after football trophy to their professional awards cabinet in the office. The MPA would like to thank all the teams for their involvement in an incredible evening.

Versus Cancer, Manchester’s biggest charity concert is back for its fourth annual gig at the MEN Arena on the 12th December to raise yet more money for local cancer charities. Tickets are now on sale for the hotly anticipated gig which returns to make more musical history this Christmas. Famous for bringing together Manchester legends for unique performances and collaborations, Snow Partol, Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Peter Hook (Joy Division / New Order) and Tim Booth, Jim Glennie and Larry Gott of Manchester legends James are the first names to be announced on the typically mammoth line up.The artists are collaborating with the world renowned BBC

Philharmonic Orchestra. Fresh from their stunning performance at Salford’s Proms in the Park the orchestra will perform specially orchestrated one off sets.Collaborations are being especially written for the occasion by critically acclaimed composer Joe Duddell, who most recently worked with Elbow on their famous orchestral concerts earlier this year.

The money raised will go towards helping cancer patients in the region, with The Christie in Manchester being the main beneficiary. Tickets for the concert are priced at £32.50 to £40. For more information visit versuscancer.org

kETTLEbELLThe Kettlebell was born in Russia and is a cannonball shaped weight with a handle on top. It’s been hailed as the ultimate body-conditioning tool, being used by athletes, army cadets and celebrities all over the globe to increase fitness, endurance, strength and flexibility. Kettlebells come in varying weights from 8kg all the way up to 35kg. The regime can burn up to 1, 500 calories per hour and is great for toning all areas of the body and burning fat, making it extremely popular with men wishing to sculpt their biceps, but women looking to slim down and tone up. Rumour has it that Geri Halliwell owes her new lithe

physique to the Russian tradition. It works muscles you didn’t even know existed and you’ll be aching for days afterwards, but once you get into the swing of it, you’ll see a fast and noticeable improvement.Kettlebell training is perfect for getting maximum results in little time, which may be the reason why celebrities swear by it. The kettlebell differs from regular dumbbells due to the dynamic nature of its movements, making you lean rather than bulky.Kettlebell training is soon becoming the exercise regime of the future, building a reputation as the most efficient fitness tool around.

POLESqUEPole Dancing has long been the sexiest way to keep fit but hot on its heels is Polesque by Body Barre . It starts with a sensational chair dance warm up with exercises designed to sculpt your silhouette and improve flexibility.Next its time to don the heels (in most pole dancing classes you don’t actually wear heels when learning) and launch into a pole dance routine, moving to the music. The expert teachers will show you a few basic moves on the pole to get you in the mood but it’s all about making it your own. The class ends with a wind down stretch leaving you invigorated. The class is perfect for those thinking about joining a full pole course but also want to combine it with a bit of dancing as it focuses on the dance side of pole rather than the fancy tricks and acrobatics that take serious practice to master.

Body Barre Pole Dancing and Burlesque classes are open to all fitness levels and absolute beginners are welcome. You must be at least 16 years old to take part but there’s no upper age limit!Polesque is a great class for those who love to shimmy, body roll and strut...Classes are held in central Manchester. Greater Manchester Police is calling on all students to think carefully about their plans before a big night out and to make sure the stay safe while enjoying themselves.

Here are just a few simple hints and tips that will hopefully prevent you from drinking too much and becoming vulnerable to being a victim of crime:

1. Pace your drinks – avoid being in a big round.

2. Plan how you are going to get to and from where you are going safely.

3. Be aware of how many units you are drinking.

4. Try and have soft drinks, or water throughout the night.

5. Eat before or during a night out, as eating slows alcohol absorption.

6. Stay with the friends you are going out with and make sure you look out for each other.

7. Avoid people topping up your drinks and don’t leave your drink unattended.

8. Take a taxi you can trust.

It is important to remember that you can only stop a black cab in the street without booking it first. Other cabs must be booked via a taxi rank – it is illegal for someone to stop to pick you up unless you have booked it first.

Don’t ‘night hike’ – make sure you get home safely. Unlicensed taxis are unpredictable and dangerous so stick with safer options.

Large Outdoors is also great for your pocket! Events such as walks are free and our hostel weeends away cost a mere £55 and this includes 2 nights accommodation, all your food and activities. All you need to do is get yourself there (we can help with car share) and bring drinks to enjoy in the evening.

ENNERDaLE HOSTEL wEEkENDLake District National Park27th - 29th NovemberWe head off for our first trip to the Lake District where we have exclusively booked this hostel for our sole use. The weekend will be a chance for you to get to know some of your fellow members whilst we enjoy the delights of the Lake District. As with all of our weekends away the Friday night will be spent meeting and greeting your fellow group members. Saturday will be a full day out in the mountains enjoying some of the best scenery the Lakes has to offer, before we spend the evening around the open fire drinking and eating. Sunday is a more relaxed day with hopefully a few hangovers before we head back on Sunday afternoon.

Eyam and Eyam MoorLocation: Peak DistrictRating: ModerateDate: Sunday 15th NovemberWe start our walk form the charming Village of Eyam, often referred to as “The Plaugue Village of Eyam”. In September 1665, the Plague arrived. To prevent the spread, the Vicar and Villagers self quarantined themselves and even Church services were suspended. This led to families having to bury their own around the houses. We leave this Village on our walk and head up to Eyam Moor with its stunning views and carpet of heather, before descending down in to Bretton Clough, along the Valley of Highlow Brook before we head back into Eyam. This walk will require you to drive, please contact us for details of car shares.

MarsdenLocation:Marsden Rating: ModerateDate: Sunday 22nd NovemberMarsden and StandedgeModerate 8-9milesFor this walk we head to the very northern reaches of the Peak District and the end of the Pennine Ridge. Taking in the Standedge canal tunnel, the highest and longest canal tunnel in the UK. This walk is often described as bleak due to the open moorland being crossed. We prefer to think of the stunning vistas to be enjoyed. We join the Pennine way for part of this journey. We will be getting the train from Manchester Victoria to Marsden for this day walk. Details and times to be posted closer to the walk.
