What our clients are saying about us

“Having lived in [the community] for the past 24 years, there has only been one newspaper I feel captures the hometown feeling that a local paper should: and that paper is Bellmore/Merrick Life. As a resident, I look forward each week to receiving the paper to see what is going on in town... as an advertiser, Bellmore/Merrick Life has been the only localnewspaper where I run my ads. I constantly have people in town telling me they see my ads. I’ve listed homes as a result of Bellmore/Merrick Life. Working with Bellmore/Merrick Life is like working with family and that is what I feel a hometown paper is all about.”

— Margaret Biegelman, Realtor - Prudential Douglas Elliman (Display advertiser)

“I would like to thank all of the staff at Merrick Life for their assistance with my advertising campaign. The ads have reached the exact demographics that I had hoped for and have produced a wonderful response. I will definitely continue to use their services moving forward and hope to increase my business with their continued help and support. Thank you again for all of your help.”

— Sonny Henning - SAT Prep Course Services (Classified advertiser)

“As a dentist who has been practicing in Freeport for 30 years, I have seen many changes in our community. All of these changes, plus information about community events and local news have been faithfully reported by our local community newspaper, The Leader. I look forward each week to reading about our Village, and what’s happening here. The Leader is a most valuable asset to Freeport.”

— Edward Maurer, D.D.S. (Display advertiser)

“Over the years, our Citizen advertising activity has raised awareness and delivered customers from both consumer and commercial sectors.” (Display Ad)

— Bill Arnold , Owner - Rudy’s A-1 Auto Body & Repair

“Our weekly Citizen advertising program consistently brings highly qualified clients, and client-referrals.” (Display Ad)

— Floyd Earl, Owner/Broker - Coldwell Banker Manor Gate Real Estate (Display advertiser)

“We depend on our Citizen advertising to attract local residents to our store, for sound advice and personal service for their pets.” (Display Ad)

Our history

Merrick Life, the flagship newspaper of L&M Publications, was

founded in 1938 by Karl Anton, the son of a Freeport printer. After

his ink business took off, he sold Merrick Life to Robert Morgan.

Mr. Anton often remarked that his former newspaper had the highest

circulation relative to population of any subscription newspaper on

Long Island.

“it [Merrick life] is a true local weekly

newspaper that maintains the integrity

of its local community,” Mr. anton said.

In 1958, Faith and Johannes Laursen bought Merrick Life from

Robert Morgan. As former daily newspaper journalists, they brought

professionalism and energy to match the growth of this affluent

suburban community in the second half of the 20th century.

Over the years L&M Publications grew under the leadership of the

Laursens and their children with the founding of Bellmore Life and

acquisition of The Freeport-Baldwin Leader and The Wantagh-

Seaford Citizen.

Today, the second generation of Laursens, publisher Linda

Toscano and editor Paul Laursen, have received numerous awards

for their community service through journalism.

Paul serves on the boards of the Historical Society of the Merricks

and the Merrick Brotherhood Council, he is member of Kiwanis and

the Lions. He has won national and Long Island awards for his pho-

tography and under his leadership the newspaper has won awards

for excellence in editorial columns, special sections and local news

coverage.

Linda Toscano was named a New York State Woman of

Distinction in 2002 and Merrick’s woman of the year in 1990. She

has served on the boards of the New York State Press Association,

the Long Island Breast Cancer Coalition, Freeport Dollars for Schol-

ars and the Merrick Chamber of Commerce. The League of Women

Voters has honored her for publishing their voters guide (in each of

the L&M Publications) each November for over a decade.

Here’s an interesting fact about our papers – the masthead flags

were designed by the late Ole Hamann, head of the newspapers’

graphics department. He later went on to be the Postmaster General

of the United Nations.

Life happens in our towns...

...so why not take advantage of it!

Advertise your business, trade or special need in one or all

of L&M Publications’ four newspapers. The average weekly

community paper remains in the reader’s home 4.3 days.

41% of all readers will keep the weekly issue in their home

until the next edition arrives.

Advertisers aren’t our only customers. When deciding

where to spend precious advertising dollars, you should

look for a publication that has proven loyal readership.

L&M Publications has developed such a loyalty among its

subscribers by providing decades of journalistic

excellence. Each weekly issue features local news cus-

tomized to that town, sports and school news, letters to the

editor, community events, religious calendars and much

more.

Market penetration is more than just a numbers game.

Numbers don’t lie, but they can be misleading. Some free

or requested circulation publications claim high market

penetration and home delivery. They deliver mostly to front

lawns, driveways, bushes, just about everywhere but into a

mailbox.

L&M Publications’ four community newspapers are

delivered to the home of our subscribers by the U.S. Postal

Service. Our paid subscription database chooses to invite

us into their homes on a weekly basis. This ensures your

advertising won’t be left out in the rain.

A recent feature also avails our publications for free to our

website members. Members choose to sign-up and receive

our news for free – it just comes to them a few days later

than our paid subscribers. This option has been met with

great enthusiasm by our readers and advertisers alike –

and those who advertise an email or website address in

their display get the added advantage of a clickable link di-

rect to their address.

All around the towns...

L&M Publications’ The Freeport-Baldwin Leader, Merrick

Life, The Wantagh-Seaford Citizen, and Bellmore Life

have been an important part of the communities they

serve since 1935, 1938, 1953 and 1964 respectively.

They are locally owned and staffed by community resi-

dents, who also play an active role in civic associations

such as the chambers of commerce and service clubs.

Their achievements have been recognized by profes-

sional associations’ awards on the national and state lev-

els, but even more meaningful are the many awards

presented by the local organizations over the years,

awards that prove the newspapers are truly valued in the

communities they serve.

Seaford, Wantagh, Bellmore, Merrick, Freeport and Bald-

win are all suburban communities located on the South

Shore of Long Island – with beautiful waterfront homes

and parks, excellent schools and many thriving establish-

ments. It’s a nice area to visit and an even better place to

live, with the added advantage of proximity to New York

City. Each community has its own flavor, and the news in

its newspaper is tailored just for it.

Online advertising,

social networking &website tracking...

Online advertising is another feature L&M Publications

offers. We also use our social networking tools to promote

information about our advertisers, specials, events – and

notes of interest.

L&M Publications embraces the new and ever-changing

technology of the Internet. We have been lauded by our

readers for not only accurately publishing stories in our print

edition but by the same people who also follow us online

and through our social networking. We use both to break

news, expand in detail beyond the pages in print and to

create keepsake editions.

We track our website visitors as to how many per week,

month, etc. – updated statistics are available upon request.

Our website features member-only benefits that include

access to our weekly issues (after home delivery – only

website members can read full issues online) and opens up

our subscription base beyond those who pay for or get

samples of our paper.

We encourage the use of our online full editions as part of

school curricula (ie. current events), for use by civic

organizations and by out-of-towners. Visitors to our site

(and online editions) may be residents of a neighboring

town who want to expand their reading just outside their zip

code. Often we get stories from our readers saying they

discovered a new “gem” of a business because it was ad-

vertised in one of our papers.

newspaper (51%) instead of on the Internet

(11%).

• 74% of those surveyed read a local

newspaper each week.

• 61% of readers read local news very often

in their community newspaper, while 48% say they never

read local news online (only 11% say they read local news

very often online).

• Of those going online for local news, 52% found it

on the local newspaper’s website, compared to 20% for

sites such as Yahoo, MSN or Google, and 25% for the

website of a local TV station.

• The local community newspaper is the primary

source of information about the local community for
