The use of recessed switch and socket boxes in walls is widespread in private, public and commercial buildings. The walls are subject tofire regulations and, most will have to be firerated. However, once a hole is made in the wallfor a recessed switch or socket box, the integrityof the construction and its ability to perform in afire can be reduced significantly, in addition theability for the wall to provide an effective acousticbarrier is also impaired. In timber framed buildingsthe prevention of fire entering wall cavities andattacking the structure is critical to the overall fireintegrity of the building. To combat this Astroflame,as part of its continuing development of passivefire and acoustic protection solutions, has developed a socket / switch fire and acousticprotection cover as an easy fit alternative to putty pads.

The covers have been developed to providemaximum protection for penetrations created by the introduction of both single and double recessed switch/socket boxes and to allow easeof fitting. In a fire situation, the cover expands internally to fill all of the available space with a fireresistant highly insulating char. The fire is unable to penetrate the hole and the cover is able to giveadditional insulation protection to the wall void by reducing the chance of heat build up and the ignition of flammable structural members. Thepenetration in the wall also provides a path forair, thus creating heat loss and drafts, the fittingof a ASTRO FRA Socket Box Cover reduces thisproblem. External building cladding systems are growing in popularity, as energy efficient alternatives totraditional building systems. Cladding on a buildingrequires that the external wall be held away fromthe building structure thus creating a void. Recessed ceiling fans and ventilation ducts arewidely used in both domestic and commercialbuildings.
