The LLB (Hons) Law with Financial Services (In-Company) degree

Purpose of Financial ServicesIn-Company Law degreeThis course allows students to study for a university degree and gain valuableexperience working within a company full-time during the final year of their studies.

The course runs in tandem with thestandard LLB (Hons) Law (full-time) degree,so students are not required to elect for the‘in-company’ route until halfway throughtheir second year.

This design ensures that students stillgraduate with the qualifying law degreerequired for entry into the traditional legalprofessions.

In-company work-relatedstudyIn the final year of this degree, students willundertake paid work based learning with anemployer within the financial services sector.Whilst working, students will continue toreceive structured academic support fromthe Law School. This is tailored to the areaof financial service they are working in. Theemployer retains complete responsibility forthe supervision, management and controlof workplace activities.

Students’ study will be supported by twoone-week study blocks which will underpinand enhance work-based learning. Thestudy blocks will take place in Septemberand March at a venue chosen by theUniversity.

Academic supervisors also provide astructured online environment to supportstudents’ learning.

FundingStudents will still be eligible for student loanfunding by the government-funded andnon-profit making Student Loans Companyto meet the teaching costs of the courseduring the in-company year.

Course content

Applied Law for FinancialServices (ALFS)The ALFS module represents one-third ofthe total academic study time during the in-company year. It serves to integratestudents’ learning of the law with theirworkplace environment in the financialservices sector. It enables students todevelop their confidence and expertise in:

• the general legal environmentsurrounding the delivery of financialservices;

• the particular legal environment of theirown workplace in either the insuranceindustry or the banking, credit orinvestment industry;

• the application of relevant legal principlesto financial services generally andparticularly in connection with theirinsurance or banking, credit or investmentwork; and

• the transferable intellectual andprofessional skills required for financialservices.

Law for Financial ServicesWorkplace Functions (LFSWF)The LFSWF module also absorbs one-third of the academic study time duringthe in-company year. It enables students to:

• develop and apply their knowledge andunderstanding of laws governing financialproducts / services to financial services’workplace functions;

• develop and apply their legal knowledgeand understanding to particular products/ services and activities / roles selected byemployers or Nottingham Law School;

• continue to develop the relevanttransferable, intellectual and professionalskills and their effective application infinancial services; and

• develop into well-rounded financialservices professionals able to appreciatethe wider context of workplace activities.

Applied Financial Services LawResearch ProjectThe Project module represents one-sixth of the academic study time during the in-company year. It integrates academiclearning within work-based practice in thecontext of an employer-approved appliedfinancial services legal research project.Through academic supervision of students,students will:

• enhance knowledge and understandingof the regulatory, business, operationaland organisational context of theirfinancial services workplace and their ownworkplace functions; and

• develop their research and communicationskills and their ability to exercise academic,professional and transferable intellectualand legal skills.

Professional In-Company SkillsReflective PortfolioThe Portfolio module absorbs one-sixth ofacademic study time during the in-companyyear.

The module enables students to:

• engage in critical reflective practicethrough development of, and criticalreflection upon, a portfolio of theirprofessional ‘in-company’ experiences;

• develop an aptitude for continuouspersonal and professional developmentwithin the workplace through portfoliodevelopment; and

• develop by preparation of their portfoliotheir ability to exercise transferableintellectual and professional skills.

Employer commitments for in-company degree• Employers need to have appropriate

procedures in place for recruitment andselection of work-based students inFebruary-March of each year for relevantemployment commencing sometime inthe period July-September.

• Employers will enter into an employmentrelationship with any student they decideto appoint for a period of no less thannine months commencing in the July-September period, subject to whateveremployment conditions might be agreedbetween themselves and the appointedstudent.

• Employers will be solely responsible forregulatory compliance in respect of thestudents’ employment, including as tothe health and safety of students’ placesof work, and for the work carried out bystudents for, or on behalf, of the employerand will cooperate with the University inall relevant procedural matters (includingas to any necessary confirmation ofregulatory compliance regardingstudents’ employment and work placehealth and safety provision).

• Employers will need to cooperate with the University as to relevant courserequirements, and ensure theemployment conditions facilitate thestudent’s engagement with the course, inparticular by providing students withappropriate study-time leave to attendweek-long teaching blocks taking place ineach of September and the succeedingMarch, and to undertake relevantassessment activities as required by thecourse timetable.

• Employers will need to appoint aworkplace supervisor to oversee thetraining, learning and development of thestudent, to provide appropriate guidancein respect of the student’s independentresearch project and to act as a point ofliaison for the student or the Law Schoolas to any issues arising with the student’swork-related learning or related needs forpastoral support.

• Employers will also need to provideappropriate employment induction andtraining for the student, and facilitate thestudent being visited, as appropriate, by adesignated member of the Law Schoolacademic staff acting as the student’spersonal tutor.
