The contents of each tank was sampled and tested per the following

table before excavation:

The procedures for sampling the tanks is given in Appendix A.

During excavation we observed the removal of the tanks, noting the

general condition of the tank. Samples were then taken for on site

jar head space analysis in compliance with DEP Policy WSC-89-001, and

for laboratory testing for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon, Volatile

Organics and PCB's as required. .11,ppe?ndix B e:nt..i.t:l

The tank was sampled on 10 May, 1991.

The tank contained 876 gallons of liquid.

Analysis was performed with a Thermo Environmental Instruments Model ~580···P• OVM orqanic vapor analyz,er which was calibrat:1ed at approximat1ely 1:15 PM. The operator was G. Daniel Hegerich.

The tank was ~emoved en 2 August, 1991. There was no evidence of

leakage from the tank or its piping. There was, however an

accumulation of product and water which entered the ground from a pipe

chase located east of the tank. The pipe chase had a dry well (by

design) that enabled drainage of water and product into the ground

contained and removed. The tank pit was excavated until all jar head

•ace analysis samples showed less than 10 ppm. Contaminated soil was

put in one pile, and clean soil was put irrto another.

excavation had passed through the contamination resulting from the

spillage from the dry well the Friday previous. 'This visible.

Five samples were taken for laboratory analysis. One was a composite

The size was 3 1/2' in diameter by 5 1/2' long (400 gallons nominal

.:>acity)

A slight amount of contamination was noted around the fill pipe which

was also noted by the Pittsfield Fire Department (PFD). PFD was

satisfied that there was no significant release, and advised Clean

B4:!rl,::shir1E:!S and us that there was no need to notify th1E:! DEP. We

concurred with his observation. The contaminated soil was segregated

for sampling and laboratory analysis.

Seven samples were taken. One sample was taken from each of the

~orth, east, south and west sides and one from the bottom of the

.::cit vat.ion. A sample was taken of the clean soil pile and the

Using the sampling auger, and ruler, measure tne depth of liquid in tank. Decide on the levels the samples are to be taken.

Lay out the sampler. Using a piece of tape, place a marker on the line to place the sampler at the desired depth for sampling.

l~wer the sampler into the tank to be sampled at the desired depth.

Lift the sampler up, and drain the sample into a b1eak1ar. draining, observe the liquid being drained.

Close and label the sample bottle.

Note: Take aliquots from the top of the tank working toward the bottom to minimize the need to clean the sampler.

Upon completion of the tank in question, clean up all equipment in preparation for the next. sample.

Note: During the sampling of liquid, it will become appa r1:!nt. whether or not the tank has solid, or semi solid sludge. USE:! this procedure only when sludge is evident.

Place the auger into the tank. Sample to the bottom of the tank. ~!:'wist: th1a1 au1;ir'•a1r around a co1.i.pl1e of tim1r:~s to collr:i:ct sampl1:0!. Raise:~ the sample to the surface of the tank. Recover sample with the sampling spatula or knife.

•~te: This procedure is only used under the following conditions: The 1pling port on the tank is to small to admit the sampler, or the

tank contains a sludge which is too thick to flow readil} into the composite sampler used above, and the sampling auger cannot be used.

If necessary, hand excavate to the top of the tank and remove the fill pipe so the composite sampler or sampling auger may be used in preference to this method.

Clean a dip rod thoroughly with mineral spirits. All 01.1 t.h1::~ rod t:o dry.

Dip the rod into the tank of liquid, allowing it to sit on the tank bottom for a few seconds. Do not force the rod into the bottom of the tank. Forcing the rod could rupture a weak tank!

Withdraw the rod as quickly as possible, and all~w the rod to drip into a receiving container. In the case of sludges, use a putty knife to clean the rod.

Repeat the dipping process until sufficient samp~e is recovered.

This method is recommended when the tank liquid depth is less than 0.45 feet (the minimum sampling depth of the composite sampler).
