The patented Beacon II™ Smart Defrost system,availablewithSmartControllersisuniquelydesignedtopredictfrost accumulation and initiates defrosts only when they areneeded.Italsoinitiatesdefroststoreacttooperationanomalies,like product deliveries and product pull-down. Typical electricdefrostsystemshave4defrostsperday.UsingtheSmartDefrostsystemcanreducethenumberofdefroststo0,1,or2perday.That’s a 75% reduction on average. This greatly reduces theamountofenergyusedand in turnreducesoperatingcosts.

The Need For Head Pressure Control
Refrigerationcondensingunitsmustefficientlyperformatvaryingambientconditions.Aproperlysizedunitwilladequatelyperformateventhehighestsummerambienttemperatures.However,insituationswherethesystemmustoperatethemajorityofthetimeatlessthandesigntemperature,ameansofprovidingadequateheadpressureforrefrigerantflowisdesirable.TheLDV&LDDunitshaveanadjustableResourceIImethodofheadpressurecontrol.
Resource IIisLarkin’smostenergyefficientlowambientheadpressurecontrol.Thissystemprovidesyearroundcontrolofrefrigerantheadpressurewithouttheuseofspecialrefrigerantexpansionvalves.
Resource IIcombinesthebenefitsofrefrigerantsubcoolingandreduceddischargedpressureduringmildambientconditions.Astheambienttemperaturefalls,thereceiverpressureisallowedtofalltoaminimumof75°Fsaturatedcondensingpressure.Thereduceddischargepressureatthecompressorincreasesthecompressorcapacityandlowerstheinputwattsfromthecompressormotor.ResourceIIalsousesthereducedambienttemperaturetosubcooltheliquidrefrigerantinthecondenser.Thissubcooledliquidalsoincreasessystemcapacity.Asageneralrule,everyonedegreeofsubcoolingresultsina0.50%increaseinsystemcapacity.Togethertheseresultingreaterefficiency,greatercapacity,andreducedruntime.

Operation
Astheambienttemperaturefalls,thesystemcondensingpressureisalsoreduced.Thispressureismaintainedbyaregulator(ORI-6-65/225)atthecondenserdrain.Atapproximately75°Fsaturatedcondensingpressuretheregulatorrestrictstheflowofliquidrefrigerantfromthecondensercausingthecondensertoflood.Thiscondenserfloodingallowstheliquidrefrigerantinthecondensertobecomesubcooledbytheambientairflowingthroughthecondenser.Astheregulatorcontinuestofloodthecondenser,apressuredifferentialwillbeestablishedbetweenthereceiverandthecompressordischarge.Atapredescribeddifferential,asecondvalve(ORD-4)willopenandallowdischargegasfromthecompressortobypassthecondenserandflowintothetopofthereceiver.Thisgasisusedtopressurizethereceiver.
Boththeinletandoutlettubesofthereceiverhavediptubeswhichareimmersedinliquidrefrigerant.Theliquidinthereceiveractsasaninsulatorfromthevaporareaofthereceiver.ThisuniquedesignminimizesthecontactofthehotgasusedtopressurizethereceiverthroughtheORD-4valve.Thisallowsbypassvaportopressurizethereceiverwhilereheatofthesubcooledliquidisminimized.
Subcooledliquidisfurtherenhancedbytheroutingofliquidfromthereceiverliquidlineoutlettothecondenserbeforeleavingthecondensingunit.
