Dear Livingston Angels, When my husband, Paul

Wiener was a patient at Los Robles Acute Care in Westlake, his speech therapist was Marsha Zak. She proved to be outstanding in her treatment of him. Paul was to be released and I asked Marsha who she was employed by and she told me Livingston. I then requested all therapists coming to our home be from your company. This decision proved to be momentous.

Marsha taught my husband to speak again and finally to eat soft foods. He had been on feedings through his stomach until that time.

Ric Esguerra, a physical therapist, tested Paul’s legs to determine their strength, and felt that he would be able to stand and eventually walk. What a boost to Paul’s feeling that he would never walk again. Little by little Ric had him working on skills to build his stamina and strength, and eventually Paul stood.

Wendy Gastwirt, an occupational therapist, taught my husband to dress, shower, use the bathroom, and any number of skills.

Tami Chrans, a dietician, checked Paul’s feedings and determined that he was getting enough nutrition and calories, and he was thriving.

Mary D’Anna, RN, checked Paul often to see that everything was going well. She is a dedicated worker and very understanding.

Paul was like Humpty Dumpty having taken a fall and all the doctor’s couldn’t do what your Livingston Angels were able to

accomplish. Paul now walks with a walker, speaks clearly, and eats holding his head in the left position, chin down. He requires minimal supervision except when eating, when he needs cueing. Saturday, Paul, his caregiver and I went out to lunch. This was his first time in a restaurant since his accident on December 22, 2012.

My heartfelt gratitude to your skilled therapists for giving Paul the ability to lead a normal life.

Sincerely, Ann Wiener

Our Messageto You

Disaster at the Door

Our beautiful Ventura County home does come with its share of risks: earthquake, fire, mud slides, and tsunami. The recent Springs Fire brought one of those

dangers to the doorsteps of our patients. Before the fire: Livingston meets monthly with the Ven-

tura County Public Health Emergency Preparedness office and other healthcare facility members, and participates in the Web Emergency Operations Center.

Every Livingston patient receives disaster preparedness in-formation as a part of their admission. In addition, Livingston has its own Disaster Management Plan that covers communica-tion with staff, patients, families, and the Board of Directors.

During the fire: Our patients come first, and when the Springs Fire erupted, we contacted all who were threatened and gave them information about safely evacuating, reminded them to take their medications with them, and gave them phone numbers to contact us when they were safely out of harms way.

One of our patients was a bed bound hospice patient who needed to be evacuated from his home by ambulance and taken to a Red Cross shelter. The patient’s case manager met him at the shelter, and we arranged for a hospital bed and medications to be ready for his arrival. When the danger had passed, we made sure he was safely transported back home.

Nine of our staff members live in the area affected by the fire. To assist in maintaining patient coverage in the area, other staff stepped forward and filled in. With excellent teamwork all patients were accounted for and continued receiving care.

Throughout we remained in frequent communication with authorities in charge of fighting the fire to ensure we were ad-justing as the evacuation orders were put in place.

After the fire: As well as our staff performed during the Springs Fire, we always review and ask ourselves what we can do better, what did we learn? Our Livingston Wellness and Safety Committee evaluated our response and the information was shared with the Board of Directors and at staff meetings.

You can be assured that disaster preparedness is a serious and ongoing concern of ours. We will continue to maintain readiness for the unfortunate but important times when our patients need us most.

Mission stateMentLivingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation and Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association recognize the growing need to provide services in the home environment for the sick, handicapped, elderly and homebound.

As community-supported, nonprofit organizations, they strive to provide professional, licensed and supportive home health and hospice care services of the highest quality in the most cost effective manner to the people of Ventura County to ensure a positive patient outcome.

LMVNA explores and develops health-related programs based upon community need and accep-tance, economic viability, and availability of resources to provide services.

LMVNA is sensitive to the financial circumstances of its patients and provides needed services, in-cluding those at reduced or no charge to indigent patients, based upon the available resources for the organization.

The Livingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation is the parent organization of Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Livingston CareGivers.

Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association is licensed by the State of California, certified by Medicare and Medi-Cal, and is accredited by The Joint Commission.

QuESTioN: I know Livingston Hospice offers many grief and bereavement support groups, but can anyone just go without calling ahead?

ANSWER: Yes, absolutely! Everyone is welcome, regardless of when their loss occurred, and you don’t need to call ahead, just come. We offer weekly support groups in various locations, all free of charge and open to everyone who has experienced a loss. Our support groups provide a safe and comfortable environment where members explore and express feelings, better understand the grieving process, and receive emotional and educational support.

After experiencing a significant loss there is no right or wrong way to grieve; one minute you may feel hopeful and the next, you’re blown over by the pain of sorrow. Livingston understands and is here for you. Our Chaplains, Licensed Medical Social Workers, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists lead the group. Yes, all specialists in grief support, but the heart of the group is its members. Here are others who have been there, who will listen and

share. Members find great comfort during this difficult time and develop coping skills, find new social support systems, and rediscover a sense of hope. Here one finds a community of understanding and a safe haven where practical tools, valuable resources, and peer-based encouragement abound. Members discover a special bond that develops when one shares grief and finds new strength and hope for the future. Livingston grief support groups are people helping people during the most challenging of times … together we help serve and help heal. Call Livingston (805)642-0239 for more information.

Please send “Ask Livingston” questions to Sandy Morse, RN, [email protected] or call (805)642-0239 x653.

Livingston CareGivers mission includes compassion, reliability, trustworthiness, and skill. Livingston firmly supports the promotion of staff through

education and training. As an example of this, Livings-ton recently invited CareGivers to attend an “End of Life Transition” course taught by Livingston’s Teri Helton, RN, MSN, Community Outreach Liaison.

While the class focused on the overall philosophy of hospice, including caring for the patient and their family, staff was intimately brought through the dying process as seen at Livingston Hospice.

Teri is passionate about bringing the topic of death into discussion. “Caregivers need to know and feel comfortable with what happens at the end of life and respond in such a way that our patients’ needs are heard and respected.”

Dee Williams, LVN, attended the course and said it has already made her a better caregiver. “When my Grand-ma died on hospice 8 years ago and I didn’t understand the dying process. After this course, I feel my level of compas-sion and comfort for the patient’s transition has catapulted.”

Part two of this series will educate on Communica-tion and Care.

arc Bobonic is an admitted momma’s boy. So when the call came in 1997 that

his mother Wini Maye Bobonic had terminal breast cancer, Marc thought nothing of quitting his job in the music business in Los Angeles and relocated to Oxnard Shores to be by her side.

Marc estimated his caregiver experience would last about three months. Although his mother continued to decline, she lived an additional three years and Marc’s caregiving turned into a spiritual journey with his mother. Wini eventually came under the care of Livingston Hospice in 1999.

For reassurance Marc asked his mom to show him a sign after her passing. When Wini’s end was drawing near, she wrote a poem for Marc to comfort him and let him know that she would always be with him.

Watch a bird, watch a butterfly, watch a leaf on a tree.

You will be seeing me.

We are all one.

I am you, you are me.

Love is all as we all will be… forever.

One day after Wini passed, Marc noticed a swallowtail butterfly land on his balcony. It stayed for about a half an hour and then returned day after day. Butterflies were often the subject of Wini’s paintings. The profound experience surrounding his mom’s butterfly poem inspired Marc to write and record a song using her words as lyrics.

In addition to the spirit butterfly, the Livingston Hospice family adopted Marc as well. After Wini was gone, Marc said he felt “like a babe in the woods” and began attending grief classes. From there he made the step into the hospice volunteer program. Marc feels that the classes and volunteer program were supportive, useful and “kept me sane.”

The volunteer program, although rewarding, was not easy for Marc. He recalls gathering courage standing outside of a

dying patient’s home and says that “My brain didn’t want to go in, but my heart and feet led the way.”

One year Marc attended Livingston Hospice’s annual Light Up A Life celebration that remembers loved ones who have passed. As a musician himself with a strong technical background, Marc thought the sound system and music could be improved and offered to help. For the past twelve years, Marc has been working with musicians and the Light Up team of volunteers to assist in delivering heartfelt and memorable evenings. Last year’s event ended with a soulful rendition of Taps played on the saxophone by Kyle o’Donnell. We can’t wait to hear what Marc has in store for us this December.

When asked about the inspiration for his joining the Livingston Legacy Society and including Livingston in his estate plans, Marc says, “My experience with Livingston Hospice makes me never want to say goodbye and lose ties.”

Marc never has to worry about that.It is forward thinking, kind and compassionate people like

Marc who are putting into place a sustainable foundation for Livingston’s mission.

If you would like more information on becoming a Livingston Legacy Society member, please contact Marc Wilde at (805)642-0239 x603 or [email protected].

Livingston’s 6th Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon was a resounding heartfelt success. Amidst the tributes, the stories, catching up with friends and within a beautiful

setting, supporters helped us raise $106,000. These funds will be used to provide vital home healthcare and hospice to Ventura County’s sick, handicapped, elderly and homebound. This year we honored and remembered two very special Ventura County mothers, Nancy Borchard and Deborah ‘Deedee’ Busch. Two of their children, Nicole Nash and Trey Busch, shared personal, moving and sometimes humorous stories about the impact these caring and compassionate women had in their lives and in the community at large through their selfless giving and devotion. In a surprise moment, Nancy Borchard herself took to the podium “humbled and moved to be in the company of many compassionate women” to thank the attendees. She then went on to honor “the most important woman in my life,” her mother Betty Chappel who was “always loving and always a good listener.” It was a special moment that touched us all. We were also fortunate to have Dr. Marc Wolfsohn as emcee whose humor and easy manner kept the festivities flowing and the mood light. Entertainment was provided by the Harmony Channel Quartet who did a cappella renditions of Under the Boardwalk and It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).

Did you Know…Livingston has a Specialized Pediatric Program

The largest group of underserved patients in our com-munity are those who meet the poverty guidelines for coverage by the State’s Medi-Cal program. For these

patients, the reimbursement for home care services is less than 50% of any standard home care payment. With escalat-ing health care costs over the last 10 years, Ventura County’s other home care agencies have increasingly shied away from providing care to the underserved Medi-Cal population (see graph).

As the Affordable Care Act unfolds over the next sev-

As our health care system undergoes massive change, children, along with the rest of us, are being discharged sooner (and sicker) from

hospitals. The need for pediatric home care is increasing and Livingston has responded by developing a specialized Pediatric Program to meet these needs. As the only bona fide Pediatric Program in Ventura County, Livingston provides a vast array of home nursing care for all children, from newborns to 18 year olds. Although children are a small percentage of our overall patient population, they unfortunately can have serious and complex health care issues and remaining at home in an environment that is safe, nurturing, and familiar is best. Advances in childhood cancer and chronic disease treatment have created a need for this unique part of home care and children needing advanced intravenous medications or artificial tube feedings can now be managed at home.

In addition to the life changes that families face when caring for a medically fragile child, there are intense emo-tional needs as well. Our experienced and dedicated team of clinicians and therapists, who focus specifically on children, are committed to providing compassionate skilled home care nursing along with emotional support and re-sources to parents and families. Seriously ill children are commonly covered by state funded programs that pay nearly 50% less than standard insurance. True to our mission, Livingston provides care for these patients regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Over half of our pediatric cases receive subsidized care and we are so very fortunate to be the recipient of a Harriet H. Samuelsson Foundation grant to cover these costs. Caring for children can be challenging … when they hurt, we hurt; but when they look up and smile, we are reminded of why we do what we do. What a privilege it is to make a difference in a child’s life.

eral years the need for home care for Medi-Cal patients will increase greatly. This will be the result of both more patients covered under the Medi-Cal umbrella and the push to provide increased care outside the hospital.

As Ventura County’s only nonprofit community home health and hospice agency, Livingston’s mission is to ensure that our care is available to the underserved in Ventura County. A 66 year tradition of not turning patients away because of the inability to pay remains critical to our community… today, more than ever.

A Message About Planned Giving

There has never been a better time for you to consider a charitable gift of stock than right now.For the past few years gifts of securities, depending

on when you initially purchased the stock, may have been less desirable than in the past. After all, stocks that have declined in value offer no taxable benefit as a charitable gift. With the stock market bouncing back strongly and reaching record highs all that has changed.

Gifts of stock with appreciated value avoid capital gains taxes. This means that the stock you bought in 2008

when the market was at its lowest has now significantly increased in value. If you were to sell that stock, you would be on the hook for a sizable capital gains tax bill, possibly as high as 39% when you add on the new healthcare surtax for high income earners. By gifting the stock directly to a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity

like Livingston, without cashing it out (this part is important), you can avoid the unwanted tax bill. Effectively, your original investment plus earnings will go directly to providing quality home healthcare and compassionate hospice for those who need it most without a big bite being taken out by the IRS.

If you have questions related to gifts of stock or need assistance to make a transaction, please contact Marc Wilde, CFRE at (805)642-0239 x603 or [email protected]. Livingston is not qualified to provide specific legal, tax or investment advice. This column is intended to provide general gift planning information and education.

The taxman cometh… or not.
