What Dorm Size is Right For You?
After the hurdle of deciding to stay in a dorm has passed, the next
biggest decision you will be faced with is choosing the size of room
you wish to stay in. Starting from two beds all the way up to more
than two dozen, dorm sizes come in all shapes and sizes with an

Paragliding and Adventure Sports in Tyrol, Austria
The Tyrol region of Austria is known for its beautiful
scenery high in the Alps. Picturesque villages are plenty
and each make you feel like you are a part of the Sound of
Music. As much as running over the hills singing at the
top of my lungs was appealing, I was in this corner of
Austria during my European sightseeing tours for another
reason - adventure sports.

Luxury Ski Holidays for Beginners
Jetting off to a sparkling new resort to discover a
winter sport in the wild is both exhilarating and nerve
wracking. Just like wobbling down that beginner’s run
takes a lot of mental preparation and can reapdramatic rewards, so taking the time to organize your
trip will give you a more fulfilling, stress-free holiday
experience. Luxury ski holidays are becoming more
popular with every year that passes, you may be one
of many beginners on the slopes, but lack of
experience needn’t hold you back from having a first
class holiday. (Photo "Swiss" Malta333)

The beautiful sights of Halong Bay are one of the most
sought after destinations in all of Vietnam. Resulting from
this, hundreds of tourists visit every single day and stay
overnight on the water in one of the many number of junk
boats. While this is a dream itinerary, there is one small
drawback to the experience - the garbage.

The Two Castle Phenomena in Japan
Japanese castles are often one of the top attractions
that foreign tourists want to see while in the country.
Relics of an older time when samurai warriors
dominated the land, Japanese castles are a
testament to the beauty and engineering knowledge
of the period which many travelers seek out holiday
deals just to witness. While most of the castles
have been destroyed and rebuilt over the ages,
mostly resulting from World War II, they still
represent an amazing period in Japanese history.
After traveling to three castles throughout Japan,
there is a distinct trend that has appeared between the castles which, unfortunately, might not be entirely a
good thing.

Product Review: Black Rapid Camera Strap
I received the Black Rapid Camera Strap as a gift
from my brother prior to heading out on my
adventure. Not knowing of the product before
receiving it, I was skeptical of its use as a
replacement strap for the serious photographer.
Primarily, it seemed unreasonable that a $50+
strap would be worth it when a decent neck strap
was already provided when purchasing my SLR a
few years ago.
After giving the strap a serious workout for a
several months in Asia, I can clearly see why it is

Normally the clothes I take traveling are chosen for
their ability to be disposed of and replaced quickly and
cheaply. Rather than caring what they look like, I will
find the least expensive items possible just to cover
the basics. It always seemed silly to me to spend a
lot of money on c lothing when one small misfortune
could ruin them forever.
The exception to this rule is my travel shoes. Where
other clothes had started brand new and became
trash within a few weeks, my travel shoes always
seem to stay with me and outlast any environment
that dare challenge it. After a couple months of
breaking in, five months and Asia, and several months after, my t ravel shoes are still k icking albeit with a more

Where You Should Be! - Wales
This edition of the series "Where You Should Be!"
features the less traveled country of Wales!
Wales is an often overlooked country on the tourist
trail due to having England as its neighbor to the
East. But for being in such close proximity, it would
be unwise to skip this country full of beauty on your
next adventure. With the 2012 Olympics coming up,
and Cardiff hosting some of the main events, tourism
in this country will pick up fast. But before you start
looking for cheap hotels in Cardiff, think about some
of these interesting sights the country has to offer!

Out of all of the places in the world that I have
visited, t he Dead Sea has to be one of the most
unusual. The name for this body of water is
especially fitting, as until recently it was thought
that nothing could survive in its high salinity
waters. Nothing, except for the thousands of
tourists that jump in every year to enjoy the other
benefit the salt rich water provides - buoyancy.
As the Dead Sea is one of the few places in the
world to experience buoyancy while on the
surface of a body of water, I was thrilled to have
experienced it on my Middle East adventure. A
quick change into our swimsuits and our tour group ran into the water to experience this wonder in all its glory
without second thought. The euphoria of some members of our group was quickly wiped away as they began
having the sensation of severe burning moments later.

Authentic Sichuan Recipes from China
One of my not-so-secret travel obsessions is taking
cooking classes in new cultures. Discovering new
cuisines and the proper way to make them is
something that I find absolutely fascinating, and is
likely one of the few tourism jobs I would be interestedin pursuing sometime in the future.
While spending a month in China, I did not shy away
from taking a cooking class to learn one of the
country's most important cooking styles: Sichuan. I
came back with recipes for the tasty dishes Mopo Tofu
and Hui Guo Rou (Twice Cooked Pork)

The final stop in my month long tour of Europe was the
City of Lights - Paris, France. Knowing that there are so
many things to do in Paris, I spent my five days in the
city getting my moneys worth with the popular Museum
and Metro passes, allowing nearly universal access to
the entire city.
It was set to be a packed few days, but I was determined
to make the most out of the last few moments of a greattrip and had planned my itinerary out nicely to fit it all in.
With five days I was sure that I would have had enough
time to see it all, but by the end I knew I was horribly
mistaken.

Day Tripping to Stonehenge, Salisbury, and Windsor Castle
London, England was the very first destinat ion that I visited overseas. Three and a half years later and dozens
of countries visited, London is still one of my favorites. With limited time in the city, I decided to take a day trip
to visit Stonehenge, one of the many things to do in London that I had to cram in such a small period of time.
For the itinerary to work out to be within my budget, I had to book a package tour that also visited Salisbury
Cathedral and Windsor Castle, and turned out to be a fantastic decision.

The 5 Most Expensive Destinations I Have to Visit
When talking travel on this website, you will often find me going
the cheaper route when seeing the world. Budget hostels, street
food, and finding ways to save as much money as possible to
afford it all. My personal theory on budget travel is not so muchgoing cheaply, but optimizing the amount that has to be spent so
we can do everything we want without regret. We save longer and
stay in cheaper rooms if it means getting a few extra days and not
being forced to pass up an experience. (Photo "United States
Passport" by DontBBlu)
But no matter how much we save, there are a few places in the
world that always seem to be outside our budget range. One of
the curses about being a budget traveler is that you always havethe alternative scenarios playing in your mind that talk you out of
visiting a particular place. Why would you spend $150 per night
on a resort when you can stay in the dorm next door for two
weeks for that price? Or more appropriate for us, why would we
spend $1,200 on a plane ticket to Norway for our honeymoon when we can fly twice the distance for the same
price.
Out of the places in the world we want to visit, which is pretty much all of them, five stand out as being the
most expensive. Just as my drive to visit them is at its highest, their prices far exceed what I am able to cover at this time.

The World's Smallest Packing List?
A few days ago I shared my packing list on our Facebook fan page for a 26 hour trip to Chicago. It was a
quick business trip for a training course, so I wasn't expecting to need much. One change of clothes, a tooth
brush, deodorant, and my contact lens case was all I took. I thought it was the world's smallest packing list,
but I realized after arriving that I made a huge mistake.
Soon after arriving, I found that everyone in my t raining class was wearing either business casual or casualclothing. As you can tell from the picture above, I took nicer clothing, not knowing what to expect. I could've
wore my nice button up shirt that I got custom made in Vietnam, but I was feeling like it was overkill.
Ultimately I just rewore the same clothes I had on the day before, and made my entire packing list useless in
the process.
The world's smallest packing list? Maybe. The world's worst pack job? Definitely.

Sapa Trekking: Rain Essentials
Often considered the number two destination in
Vietnam behind Halong Bay, is Sapa. The
Northern mountain town is the go to spot for

course, visiting Sapa at any time of the year puts

frequent rain storms the region enjoys. Thisshouldn't be a deterrent, as hiking in Sapa was
one of my favorite experiences, even if it did
require a bit of extra preparation when rainy.

Cancun is often synonymous with college spring

of everything for those looking for it, be it the party

The Best Amenities a Hostel Should Have
Throughout my travels I have stayed in a number of
hostels. Some were as cheap as $3 per night in Cambodia
all the way to the $30+ per night hostels of Paris and other
western European cities. There is only one common pointbetween all hostels, and that is they are all di fferent .
Unlike major chains, which tend to churn out hotel after
hotel in the same cookie-cutter establishment, hostels
tend to be locally owned businesses with unique designs.
More often than not, the hostel moves in to an already
developed space and maintains some of the amenities that
are already built in. With this variety in design, I've found a
number of features that I absolutely love, and others I cannot stand at all.
This post will feature the first of those two topics , amenities that I wish all hostels would offer and jump at
booking when I find. The second post in this series will look at the exact opposite, things I cannot stand! So
potential hostel owners take note!

SLR vs Point and Shoot - Photo Quiz #1
One of my favorite aspects about traveling is taking photos of the s ights, people, nature, and just about
everything else the world has to offer. Of course, to go along with that I am armed to the teeth with a number
of cameras, tripods, and other attachments that many people do not typically carry just to be able to get a
certain shot.
The big debate in travel photography is what kind of equipment is necessary to get the best pictures of the
world around us. Some people swear by SLRs and others are perfectly happy with a far cheaper point and
shoot camera. The trick is in knowing how to use it. A $1,000 camera will only get slightly better photos than
its $200 point and shoot counterpart if you do not know how to use it. Likewise, a $200 point and shoot
camera is capable of producing some amazingly beautiful shots if you only take the time to learn it's tricks and
secrets.

How do you apologize to someone you love after

A Hostel's False Advertising and a Surprising Finish
Disclaimer: It is not often that I start a post with adisclaimer, but I feel like this one deserves it. My original
intent was to have this be a review post for a poor guest
house experience I had at the Bun Kao Guest House in
Cambodia. It was so full of false advertising through
booking engine Hostelworld that I complained to the site
directly, and just noticed that the advertising on the site
has changed entirely reflective of my complaints. All is well
for future t ravelers.
My stay at the Bun Kao Guest House in Siem
Reap, Cambodia started off quite fantastic. Wonderful
reviews on Hostelworld had it as one of the best rated dorms I have ever booked and the price of about $3.50
per night could not be beat (Bun Kao listing is located here). But as the days went by, my patience wore
thinner and thinner with the staff that ended only wondering how the review got so high in the first place.

not the tours would be for our style or not. What I

Then I got to thinking, what are the best helicopter

researching and found several great locations across the country that a helicopter tour would be worth the
price as well as produce some of the most enviable photos in your entire portfolio.

Planes, Trains, Automobiles and Airport Parking
Sometimes making the transition from your holiday
back to your normal everyday life can be a painful
process to say the very least. What was once a two

most people experience when they get back from

Which Cruise Stateroom is Right For You?
As someone who has been on a few Caribbeancruises, I have been asked a number of questions on
the subject as the level of luxury and rigidness of the
itinerary is something most backpackers would not
normally go for. One particular topic that comes up
time and time again, for both backpackers and other
would-be-cruisers alike, is in regards to the
stateroom. Specifically: How do I choose?
Choosing the right stateroom has two major criteria
that should be kept in mind and rings true for most of
the travel styles we may face: time and money.
Time you'll actually spend in the room and the amount
of money it costs. (Photo "Cruise Ship" by

Escaping Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon the Easy Way!
As you may know, I have a moderately unhealthy
obsession with Las Vegas. What you may not know
is that I have yet to see one of the city's most famous
neighbor: the Grand Canyon. (Photo "On a Ledge"
by jimrhoda)
Anyone who has been to Las Vegas will tell you that
the signs for tours to the Grand Canyon and other
west coast tours are plenty. Everything from day
trips, helicopter tours, or even mutli-day excursions
are offered while using Las Vegas as a base. What
the tours do not tell you upfront is that the Grand
Canyon is quite far away from Las Vegas and is not even in the same state (hint: Arizona). So while the
signs may make it seem like a short day trip is actually a pretty modest adventure.
In contemplating doing this myself on every outing to Las Vegas, I've found out some of the more popular ways
to do it without paying for the high priced helicopter tours all while actually getting time to enjoy the scenery for
more than a few minutes.

Today's post is a guest post by Matt Dickhaus on his
experiences moving to Colombia. This post is a dual
post with Viventura's travel blog.
Like thousands of other 20 year olds, I went to high
school to get into a good college and went to college
to get a good job. But it’s what I did after college that
makes my story different, I didn’t get a job at a
cubicle in a big corporation punching numbers. I
decided to move to Colombia, yep that’s right, South
America, Pablo Escobar, Entourage. My parents
begged me to stay, my friends asked if I’d lost my
mind, “Colombia? Why of all the places in the world
would you want to go there?” This was a good question, and while I was more than a little hesitant, I was
determined to find the truth, I had faith there was much more to Colombia than the bad reputation of violence
and drugs we’ve all heard so much about. (Photo "The Flag of Colombia" by memoossa)

what you think of for a booming wine community, but the
region is one of the best for farming in the entire country

low, low price. The problem with wine festivals, as some
readers may be quick to point out, is that they can be very expensive for only a few tastes of some wine you
likely cannot pronounce or are ever able to afford. Vintage Ohio is completely different. $28 at the door and
you receive a wine glass and a 56 box punch card for samples from anywhere between 18 and 30 wineries, all

Picking the Best Orlando Theme Parks to Visit On Limited
Time
Orlando, Florida is one of those cities that everyone in the world has
likely heard of at one point in time. Only one word needs to be spoken
to understand the popularity of this city: Disney. Yes, Walt Disney
World, the world's largest and most visited theme park complex calls
Orlando its home. But while the Disney parks are the go to spot for
many individuals, couples, and families each year, other Orlando themeparks such as Universal Studios and Seaworld round out the list of
world class establishments you may think of visiting. (Photo
"Reflection of Cinderella's Castle" by ptogel)
Choosing which parks to visit in limited time, however, is an inc redibly
difficult task . Having been to all the parks myself a number of times
over, the following are my recommendations to get a great cross-
section of what Orlando is all about in one week, all while getting a
drastically different theme park experience in each case.
