April 2011 Edition
About a year ago Bel Piatto was opened where Micasa used to be on Julius Nyerere, by Pa-
tricia Camões, ex L’Orange (Hotel Terminus) and Nikky (Mundos). On the evening I went
there, Patricia was very busy checking on all the customers personally and still had time to
stop and chat to friends.
Th e menu features a good selection of starters such as Bruschetta with diff erent toppings,
Gorgonzola Snails in a Phyllo basket with Spinach, and various salads.
All the pasta dishes are served in half or full portions, which is a great idea for those with
smaller appetites. Th e Four Cheese Gnocchi or Ravioli fi lled with Rockcod, Prawns, Crab,
Onion, served with a White Wine, Tomato & Cream Sauce are good pasta choices.
My Risotto with Artichokes, Grilled Prawns, Pesto and Cream was the real thing and at
550Mt was worth every metical. Th ere are good choices of meat (Fillet with Cream, Black
Pepper, Brandy, Gorgonzola and Rocket at 650Mt) and seafood, and also some Chef’s Su-
ggestions and daily specials. A selection of bread is served with olive oil, balsamic vinegar
and Parmesan Cheese at 50Mt is worth paying for.
Th e wine list has a fairly good choice of South African wines (my favourite is the Haute Ca-
briere Pinot Noir Chardonnay), as well as Italian and Portuguese wines, with food pairing
options suggested next to the wines. Th ey probably have the best wine list in Maputo.
It is such a pleasure to get such informed service where the waiters actually remember who
ordered which dish at the table, and who present the wine fi rst before opening the bottle for
tasting (very rare in Maputo).
Bel Piatto is located at Rua da Argélia N°28. Tel: 21491130

extensive range of high quality items on off er. You can also fi nd stores like Mr.
Price, @home, Quebramar, Optica, the Beatles coff ee shop, Lanidor, Roxy and
more…

wling Alley (3 lanes at present) – you can contact Victor on 82 3269880 for more

Easter is a Christian feast that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the most important day of the Christian religion, and the Club of Mozambique would like to wish
the Christian community of Mozambique a Happy Easter. Th is year the Good Friday is on the 22nd of April and the Easter Sunday is on the 24th of April.
EASTER?
Christians believe according to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. As part of the Easter season, the
death of Jesus Christ by crucifi xion, is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. Th rough his death, burial and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty
for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.
Pagan traditions give us the English word “Easter” which comes from the word “Eostre”. Th e Anglo-Saxon word for April was “Eostre-monath” (the month of openings). Ho-
wever, it should be remembered that Christians celebrated the resurrection of Christ long before the word “Easter” was used, and the word they used for the celebration was
“Pascha”, which is derived from and linked to the Jewish festival of Passover.
MOVEABLE FEAST?
Easter is called a moveable feast because the date of Easter changes every year. Easter Sunday can fall on any date from 22 March to 25 April. Th e reason for this variation in
the date of Easter is based on the lunar calendar (moon) rather than our more well-known solar one. Easter always falls on the fi rst Sunday following the full moon (the Paschal
Full Moon) after 21 March. If the full moon falls on a Sunday then Easter is the next Sunday.
EGGS, BUNNY?
For Christians the custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life. Th e fi rst eggs given at Easter were birds eggs. Th ese eggs were painted in bright colours to give them fur-
ther meaning as a gift. We still paint bird eggs today but usually only chicken eggs. An Anglo-Saxon legend tells how the Saxon goddess Eostre found a wounded bird and
transformed it into a hare, so that it could survive the winter. Th e hare found it could lay eggs, so it decorated these each spring and left
them as off ering to the goddess. Concerning the Easter bunny, it is believed that the Easter Rabbit lays the eggs, for which reason they are
hidden in a nest or in the garden. Th e rabbit is a pagan symbol and has always been an emblem of fertility.

Here it is! Just like last year, the 2nd Maputo Book Fair will be held at the end of
April (29 April - 1 May). Th is year it will take place at Feima, the cultural space in
Parque de Continuadores on Av. Mao Tse Tung. During this book fair the focus
will once again be on books, their authors and other related parties, and in this way
making it a prime space for those who want to expand their reading habits.
Th e Maputo Book Fair continues to be a reference point on the local cultural
events calendar not only because of activities that promote the dissemination of
books and reading but also due to the interactive programme that includes story
tellers, poetry recitals, debates, workshops for children and youth, book launches
and book signing sessions by well known authors. Th is year’s highlights inclu-
de story telling with musical accompaniment by Rafo Diaz (Peru), a homage to
Mozambique’s great artist Malangatana by Kupalucha, poetry reading by the well-
known Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane and impressions by the illustrator
Ramón Esono (Equatorial Guinea).
Th e Maputo Book Fair is an initiative of the directors of the following cultural
centres: CCFM French-Mozambican, CCBM Brazil-Mozambique, ICMA Ger-
many-Mozambique, ICCM Portugal-Mozambique as well as the cultural repre-
sentations of the following embassies: Brazil, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Portu-
gal and Belgium. It is organized by Naturalmente Marketing, with BCI as its main
