DEAR CLUB MEMBERS:

On behalf of the Club we hope you had a great holiday season and wishing everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous 2020!January starts an exciting year of member events, starting on January 11 with our first Men’s Tennis Pro-Am play with the men’s tennis team from Stetson University which should prove to be a fun challenge for members. This will be followed by an evening of dinner and dancing at the Tennis Mingle after the Jingle with a recap of the year.

An off-property trip to Jacksonville on January 15 to see the show RENT 20th Anniversary Tour will start with a fabulous three-course dinner at the exclusive River Club, a private in dining club in Jacksonville.

The Ladies Retreat – Refresh, Recharge, Renew which was rescheduled for January 18-19 will be an opportunity for our lady members to energize their bodies and minds and at the same time relay and enjoy the camaraderie of others.

Our Annual Art & Wine Festival is scheduled for January 26 and will feature many wines to sample and purchase along with food pairings. This is our annual fundraiser with a silent auction benefiting the Flagler County Free Clinic, which provides health care for the underprivileged in our County.

The month will end with the Couples Championship featuring two days of fun, competitive golf, a welcome reception and ending with an awards dinner.

We hope you will participate in many of these events and start the new year making happy memories with friends and family.

Finally, on behalf of the Club and all the full-time hourly service professionals, we would like to thank all the Members who contributed to the Employee Holiday Fund this year. We appreciate everyone’s kindness and generosity.

Time is one of the few reasons people do not play golf. When you do find the time to practice, it must be goal oriented and with a purpose. They say 75% of your practice should be short game. Set measurable goals each time you practice and then raise the bar. This is how we improve. We can’t just beat balls at the range and expect to get better.

Besides tempo and balance, set-up fundamentals are the most important aspect to the golf swing. You should be working on your fundamentals every single time you practice. They include Grip, Posture, Alignment, and Ball Position. Even the best players in the world work on making sure their set-up is perfect. The set-up is your constant variable. It should be the same each and every time you make a swing.

RECOVERY AFTER A SERVE BY TENNIS DIRECTOR, GENE PAUL LASCANO

The term “No-Person’s Land” is referred to often in tennis. It is the area of the court in between the baseline and service line. Many times, recreational players make the repeated mistake of finding themselves in this part of court. The mistake isn’t actually standing in “No-Person’s Land”---it’s the fact that the player will continue to stay there during the duration of the point. This causes them to often hit weak shots off the back leg and at times, play ineffective volleys from way too deep in the court.

One of the most common times this error takes place is immediately after the player serves. The energy of the serve typically launches a player upward and forward. By default, this causes the player to land inside of the baseline. At this point, most players tend to then make the error of immediately getting ready for their opponent’s return. Many times, they are not even aware that they are standing in the “No-Person’s Land”.

Ideally, the best solution to avoiding this is to immediately take a step or two back right after serving. Even if the serve is hit at a decent speed, you should have more than enough time to recover behind the baseline for your opponent’s next shot.

It’s called “No-Person’s Land” for a reason ---STAY OUTTA THERE!!!

“ MINDFULNESS IS THE BASIC HUMAN ABILITY TO BE FULLY PRESENT, AWARE OF WHERE YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU’RE DOING, AND NOT OVERLY REACTIVE OR OVERWHELMED BY WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND YOU. IT’S A QUALITY THAT YOU ALREADY POSSESS, IT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO CONJURE UP, YOU JUST HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO ACCESS IT.”

Mindfulness can easily be inserted into your daily routines through seated, walking, standing and moving meditation. Inserting short pauses into everyday life; and merging meditation practice with other activities, such as yoga or workouts is mindfulness. When you’re mindful, you reduce stress, enhance performance, gain insight and awareness through observing your own mind, and increase your attention to others’ well-being. It’s a time when you can suspend judgment and approach your practice with warmth and kindness—to yourself and others. Follow these steps to begin your practice:

Take your seat. Whatever you’re sitting on find a spot that gives you a stable, solid seat, not perching or hanging back.

Notice what your legs are doing. If on a cushion on the floor, cross your legs comfortably in front of you. If on a chair, it’s good if the bottoms of your feet are touching the floor.

Straighten—but don’t stiffen— your upper body. The spine has natural curvature. Let it be there. Your head and shoulders can comfortably rest on top of your vertebrae.

Situate your upper arms parallel to your upper body. Then let your hands drop onto the tops of your legs. With your upper arms at your sides, your hands will land in the right spot.

Drop your chin a little and let your gaze fall gently downward. You may let your eyelids lower. You can simply let what appears before your eyes be there without focusing on it.

Be there for a few moments. Relax. Now get up and go about your day. And if the next thing on the agenda is doing some mindfulness practice by paying attention to your breath or the sensations in your body, you’ve started off on the right foot—and hands and arms and everything else.

That’s it. That’s the practice. It’s often been said that it’s very simple, but it’s not necessarily easy. The work is to just keep doing it.

MAKE MINDFULNESS A PRIORITY FOR 2020 Donna Gialone, Lead Fitness Trainer and Nutrition Counselor, Hammock Beach Resort

As the Lead Fitness Instructor at the Hammock my primary mission is to focus on your fitness. Are you meeting you fitness goals? How many burpees can you do in a minute? Have you implemented healthy lifestyle practices? Beginning in 2020, I want to shift the focus just a little to the left and ask you to add a Mindfulness practice to your daily agendas. What is mindfulness? I’m glad you asked.
