here you receive your health care matters. At Shawnee Mission Health (SMH), we take great pride in our 50-year commitment to serving the health and well-being of our patients and community.

That means not only ensuring you are cared for in mind, body and spirit from some of the area’s most compassionate doctors and nurses,

but also knowing you can trust that the quality of care you receive is exceptional on all levels. Our mission every day is Improving Health Through Christian Service as we serve you, whether that means making improvements in our technology, updating our facilities or staying ahead of national standards for health care quality. We don’t only base our success on the number of awards we receive, but rather what we hear and learn from our patients and families every day. In November, Press Ganey Associates named Shawnee Mission Medical

Center (SMMC) a 2014 Guardian of Excellence Award winner. Based on surveys patients like you complete, this award recognizes facilities that performed in the top 5 percent for patient experience. We have you to thank. SMMC also received two national quality awards this fall. The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America, named SMMC a 2013 Top Performer on Key Quality

Measures for excellence in using specific processes that provide patients with improved care for certain conditions related to heart care, heart attacks, pneumonia and surgical care. SMMC was also awarded an "A" grade in the Fall 2014 Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from errors, injuries and infections. These are big steps in our ongoing effort to become Kansas City's top hospital in quality, safety and patient experience. As we look forward to a new year, thank you for choosing SMH. I wish you a year of happiness and good health.

The Center for Pain Medicineis Now Serving Patients at Shawnee Mission Health-Prairie Star in LenexaTo better serve the Shawnee Mission Center for Pain Medicine’s expanding patient base, the Center has opened a new, second clinic located on the campus of Shawnee Mission Health-Prairie Star in Lenexa, KS. With full-time staffing and two procedure rooms, the new clinic offers the same services found at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center location, as well as an onsite pharmacy, imaging center and physical therapy. The specialists with the Center for Pain Medicine are Board-certified anesthesiologists who have specialized training in pain management and are certified in this subspecialty. The physicians use state-of-the-art image guided techniques to ensure safety and accuracy. In addition, the staff specializes in a multidisciplinary approach in assessing and treating pain, which includes a full-time clinical psychologist who specializes in treating the psychological effects of dealing with chronic pain. When the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center opened in January 2014, area resident Marge Petzold had no idea it would make

such a difference in her life. “I knew they had opened a new center but really knew nothing about it,” said Petzold. Then in May, seemingly out of the blue, Petzold began experiencing leg cramps that became increasingly severe. “I was having a Doppler scan of my legs and they found a clot right at the knee,” said Petzold. “From there, they did a lung scan to see if there was an embolism. There was, and I was very lucky they found it so quickly. But it also showed a tumor in my other lung.” That was when Petzold met

Prasanth Reddy, MD, MPH, FACP, medical oncologist at the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center. “Marge’s initial reaction was to resist treatment,” said Reddy, “because she was unsure about what her quality of life would be.” But Reddy and Michael Hughes, MD, radiation oncologist at the Cancer Center, developed a customized plan using both chemotherapy and radiation treatments to fight Petzold’s lung cancer. “I just had an instant trust in Dr. Reddy,” said Petzold. “He was very straightforward, and convinced me to fight the disease.” After her initial diagnosis on May 9, Petzold started an aggressive, 8-week treatment plan, with weekly chemo treatments, and

almost daily radiation. “They would describe what was going on in your body in ways that made sense,” said Petzold. “I interacted with Dr. Hughes and his nurse the most, since I had radiation everyday.” Hughes notes that having a comprehensive Cancer Center also “makes treatment as convenient as possible for our patients.” And he appreciates knowing he and Reddy can just walk across the hallway to consult with each other about a patient’s diagnosis or treatment plan. Throughout her treatment period, Petzold stayed positive and hopeful, thanks in large part to the personal way she was treated. “I loved that they are so encouraging,” said Petzold. “By

CAMP BLUEBIRD:

CANCER PATIENTS

DESERVE A CHANCE

TO BE HAPPY CAMPERS

While she was undergoing cancer treatment, Petzold visited Camp Bluebird, a special retreat for adults who have been diagnosed with cancer. It offers a creative and educational atmosphere of support amidst the beauty of nature, in scenic Parkville, MO., only 25 miles from SMMC. The purpose of Camp Bluebird is to provide a time for listening and learning, a time for fun and fellowship, along with support and information about dealing with changes in family relationships after a cancer diagnosis. After attending, Petzold said, “I wish I had known about the Camp before. I would have volunteered or donated my time and talents. It was an incredible experience, and while I was there, I made a new, lifelong friend.” For more information about Camp Bluebird, visit ShawneeMission.org/campbluebird or call 913-676-8191.

nature, I’m a ‘don't let it get you down’ type of person. I always try to appear positive, even if I feel lousy. But they always knew if I was having a rough day, and did their best to help me through it.” Best of all, Reddy and Hughes are encouraged by the outcome of the treatment plan they developed for Petzold. “The results have been pretty amazing,” said Petzold. “I feel great. I’m living life to the fullest. And the Cancer

Center staff was almost as excited with my results as I was!” The Shawnee Mission Cancer Center program continues to grow, and has recently added two new providers: Nagendra Natarajan, MD, MPH, medical oncology and hematology, and Ragan VanLeeuwen, MSN, APRN, AGCNS-BC, medical oncology. Adopt 21 good health tips in 31 daysIt's a New Year and time for a new you. At Shawnee Mission Health (SMH), we understand how hard it is to make and stick with healthy choices for you and your family. Wellness involves more than just the absence of disease. It is an active process of becoming aware and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. SMH is committed to the eight principles of CREATION Health — Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal Relationships, Outlook and Nutrition. This unique, whole-person health philosophy helps those who want to achieve and maintain wellness for a healthy, happy life. Join us on a 31-day well-being challenge and make the power of choice work for you.

This January, the well-being experts at SMH are offering 31 tips - one per day - to help you make 2015 your best yet! We challenge you to adopt 21 of these small changes into your daily routine. Complete 21 of these challenges in the 31 days of January for a chance to win prizes. Visit ShawneeMission.org/live21 to learn more - and to print a free checklist to track your progress all month long. When you’ve completed your 21 tasks, submit your form to [email protected] or by mail to Shawnee Mission Medical Center, ASK-A-NURSE, 9100 W. 74th Street, Shawnee Mission, KS 66204. Submissions are due by Feb. 9 to be eligible for the drawing.

Take your lunch to work today. The average person eats

out for lunch twice per week and spends $10 each time. Packing your lunch not only saves money, but offers more control over calories as well. To make it easy, try packing your lunch the night before. Or purchase pre-washed, ready-to-eat salad mixes and portion into containers in advance for the week ahead.

On your next grocery store trip, purchase only items on sale or generic brands. For many everyday items, like cheese, frozen vegetables or lunch meat, try picking up a generic brand or an on-sale item. Small savings can add up.

Make a list and stick to it. Whether it is grocery

shopping or a quick trip to Target, it’s easy to purchase more than you intended. If you’re known to impulse buy, create a shopping list before you go and purchase only those items. If you miss something, add it to your list for next week.

Save on over-the-counter medications. Did you know that doctors and pharmacists are more likely than the general public to buy generic? Consider buying generic for over-the-counter medications like aspirin.

Spring clean early this year. Sort through your closets and clothes to purge items you no longer need or want. Hold a garage sale or sell items on Craigslist or at a consignment store. Donate the rest.

Drink half your weight in ounces today. One of the best, natural ways to ward off cold and flu is to keep your membranes moist. This means drinking plenty of plain water. Also, consider purchasing a humidifier for your bedroom and run it during the night. When mucus membranes in your respiratory tract get dry and cracked, it is easier for viruses to enter the body. Visit ShawneeMission.org/live21 to view a video from naturopath Megan Schlick for other natural remedies for winter ailments.

Take the WEIGHTaware risk assessment. Are you concerned that you may be at risk for certain health issues as a result of your weight? Take our free, online WEIGHTaware risk assessment at ShawneeMission.org/tellmemyrisk.

Learn a lifesaving skill - CPR! When ordinary people beyond doctors and health care professionals perform hands-only CPR, a victim’s survival rate can double, or even triple. Sign up for a class online at ShawneeMission.org/classes or by calling the ASK-A-NURSE Resource Center at 913-676-7777.

Schedule your annual wellness exam. One of the best ways to maintain good health throughout life is regular check-ups with your primary care provider. Schedule your annual exam today to stay on top of your recommended screenings. To find a doctor, visit ShawneeMission.org/primarycare or call ASK-A-NURSE, 913-676-7777.

Practice safe ways to walk on icy surfaces. Our natural tendency is to break a fall with our hands, leading to strained or torn ligaments, contusions or fractures. On icy and snowy surfaces, walk slower with shorter steps and flexed knees. If you start to fall, try to fall on your backside or side, as there is more padding there.

Quit smoking. It takes a lot of strength to quit smoking, but you can do it. Set a quit date, gain support from your friends and family, and readyyour plan to help you make it work this time. If you’d like to join a five-week program to keep you on track, consider signing up for Smoking Cessation at ShawneeMission.org/classes.

Stretch for five to 10 minutes. Often, at the beginning of the New Year, people are eager for a fresh start to their fitness regimen. Unfortunately, they often forget the importance of stretching and warming up the body. Stretching is an important part of any exercise plan - and provides relaxation benefits as well. Managing Stress Identify your biggest stressors. The first

step to reducing stress is to identify what is causing it – is it your child’s messy room, that you’re always running late for work, or are you too busy to have any time to yourself? Next, you need to make an action plan that deals with it. You may also decide to try diffusing stress with physical activity. For example, both yoga and tai chi can help burn off extra energy, as well as teach you to focus your mind and let go of daily stress.

a healthy boost with easy substitutions? Try substituting unsweet-ened applesauce for oil in your next muffin recipe, or use 2 large egg whites in place of 1 large whole egg - you'll not only reduce the calories, but fat and

cholesterol as well.

Make a healthy food choice today. Instead of chips or cookies as a snack, try a handful of almonds or a piece of fruit with peanut butter.

Sign up for a 21-day cleanse. Sign up for a challenge your body has been waiting for. Join naturopath Megan Schlick and take charge of your health with a 21-day whole foods diet

Sleep soundly tonight. Experts recommend you get between 7.5 and 8 hours of sleep every night. In addition to lowering stress levels, getting enough sleep can help improve physical and cognitive function.

Practice deep breathing. Breathe like a singer – deep, diaphragmatic breathing, also known as abdominal breathing, can help reduce stress and relieve pain. Try breathing in slowly through your nose and filling your abdomen, not chest, with air. Slowly breathe out.

Share five things you are grateful for today. Studies indicate that mental well-being can impact your physical well-being. Focus on gratitude today and write down five things you are thankful for. Even better, share your thoughts out loud with your family.

Have someone rub your feet or get a massage. Reduce stress and improve your health with a massage. Even a 15-minute chair massage can have lasting effects. Consider scheduling one through Life Dynamics Health & Wellness, 913-676-2833.

Do something nice for someone else today. Improve your outlook by giving back to others. For example, hold open the door for a stranger, send a note to a friend or donate items to your local food pantry.

Embrace your spirituality. Research indicates that a link exists between faith and wellness, both physically and mentally. Find a quiet, peaceful place to pray or focus on your faith.

Leave your gadgets behind. Take time to disconnect. Turn cell phones and other gadgets off and enjoy one meal - and real conversation - with your family.

fter nearly a year of dealing with chronic elbow pain, which prevented local

resident Joan Davila from lifting and completing other daily tasks, she knew she had to do something. “I thought the pain would just go away if I rested it a bit or didn’t use it as much,” said Davila. “But that didn’t happen.” Davila met with an orthopedic specialist, and one of the options he discussed with her was a new procedure called Tenex Health TX™. Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is first in the Kansas City metropolitan area to offer this procedure, which helps patients with tendon-related injuries live a more pain-free life. After doing some online research, Davila made an appointment with Mark Clifft, MD, an interventional radiologist at SMMC, who performed the area’s first Tenex procedure. “Unlike medical or physical therapies,” said Clifft, “Tenex removes the source of the pain — the damaged tissue — and helps stimulate a healing response.” Tenex is an outpatient procedure, usually taking only about 20 minutes.

“The patient is given a local anesthetic to numb the area,” said Clifft. “Then, a quarter-inch incision is made. Using ultra-sound guidance, we place a probe about the size of a toothpick in the damaged area, and use high-energy ultra-sound waves to destroy the diseased portion of the tendon, sparing the healthy portion.” “It was quite painless,” said Davila. “Within just a few days I could tell a difference. It seemed to get better and better. And after my 2-week follow up, I was amazed how quickly I was recovering. It was awesome!” “Most patients experience a minimum of 50 percent or greater pain reduction,” said Clifft. “Months later they either feel even less pain, or none at all.” Clifft is one of a group of highly trained specialists across the U.S. who began performing the procedure in 2012, and have now helped more than 20,000 patients nationwide. “If you’re suffering from golf elbow,

tennis elbow, runner’s knee, plantar fasciitis or any other chronic tendon pain,” said Clifft, “this procedure could be the answer you’ve been looking for.” “Dr. Clifft and his staff were amazing,” said Davila. “They made me feel totally comfortable and relaxed. Best of all, I don’t even have to think about my elbow any more. I’ve resumed all my normal activities.” For more information or to find out if you are a candidate for the Tenex Health TX™ procedure, call 913-676-2094.
