Objectives

• In this presentation I will look at the following objectives;

• Environment concerns• How the environment affects seniors?• What are Micro Environments and Macro

environments?

Environment concerns

• Environmental psychology is the study of the people in their environments and how they react and the kinds of relationships they have in a specific environment. Therefore, when we look at the environments for seniors there are concerns brought up about different environments.

Environment concerns

• For example is the environment that a person is living the best environment for that person is one question that could be asked. Different types of environments will cater to different types of people.

• There are three different types of environment in which we live they are; age integrated environments, age-segregated, and long-term care facilities.

Environment concerns

• . Age integrated environments are made up of people of all ages, age-segregated are environments with just one age group of people living together an example of this might be a seniors only trailer park. Finally, there are seniors home.

• Many things are critical for environment for seniors they may seem to us as small things. These are colors of walls possibly, smells, and how hot or cold the room may be even.

Environment concerns

• A fourth environmental difference can even be sound. For example if I was to start, playing loud hard-core rock in seniors home this would create a lot of upset.

How Environments Affect Seniors

• Not just any person is suited to any specific environment, the persons physical condition is a big factor on environment need and placement. For example, we do not want to see a person with Alzheimer's disease looking after themselves, rather we would want to see this person in care facility.

How Environments Affect Seniors

• On the other hand, we do not want to see someone who is retired go into a care facility. A person will be far worse off in an environment that is not suited to their needs.

• More and more seniors want to stay in their homes rather than moving into care facilities because they want their independence, they are finding ways to do this they are installing special Emergency life support systems in their homes.

How Environments Affect Seniors

• Another example of effects on people in environments would be my 88-year-old grandpa last year he had a stroke and had to stay in the hospital for two months. He was miserable in the hospital and if he was going to die, he said he just wanted to go home and die there. For the whole time he was in the hospital, he could not walk and he was in a special cleansing unit.

How Environments Affect Seniors

• He told the doctor he did not care about what would happen if he went home, he asked to be released from the hospital. They ended up releasing him within a week of being back home he started to walk again after not walking at all for two months. This year after his 88th birthday, he is working in the garden again and actively doing work around the yard he is even trying to get his driver's license back.

What are Micro Environments?

• Microenvironments are by definition referred to as a small area of space. These smaller environments are usually chosen by people who want to simplify their lives and want less stress but to be active in some way at the same time in some sort of daily activities. An example of this type of environment might be a senior's only condominium.

What are Macro Environments?

• A Macro Environment is different in the scope than a Micro Environment it's a larger view of environment. As we know a Micro Environment brings together smalls groups of seniors who want to the same types of things. A Macro Environment is a more spread out environment with many types of people who have different ideas and objectives.
