Formal Lesson Plan-

Science Essential Question: What are living and nonliving things?

Standards:

SC.1.L.14.1 Make observations of living things and their environment using the five senses.

SC.1.L.14.3 Differentiate between living and nonliving things.

Vocabulary:

Living Things: people, animals and plants, need food, air and water. They grow and change.

Nonliving things: do not need food, air, and water, do not grow and change

Environment: all the living things and nonliving things in a place

Reproduce: make new living things like themselves

Introduction/Review: We have been learning about what living things and nonliving things are.

Today we are going to see how well we can identify living and nonliving things.

Lets take a look at our Living and Nonliving flap books.

What do all living things need? (food, air, water)

What are some examples of living things? (people, animals, plants)

How are nonliving things different? (They do not need food, air or water, they do not grow, they do not change)

Practice: (8-10 minutes)

Hold up a stuffed animal bear. Ask the class if it is living or nonliving. How do you know?

Now pass out different items (photographs, plants, stuffed animals) to each team. Students will work as a team to decide if it is living or nonliving and prepare to share with the class how they know if it is living or nonliving.

Anchor Chart will be set-up on the board. When teams are ready, they will bring their item up and place it under the correct heading (living or nonliving)

Scavenger Hunt: (5-10 minutes) Materials: clipboards, pencils, pictures hung up around the room

I have placed pictures of different items around the room. You will go on a scavenger hunt to see which items are living and which are non-living. If you find a picture, mark down if it is living or nonliving on your chart.

Ring bell, when students should return to their seats. Go over the list of items in the scavenger hunt. Living or nonliving choral response.

Individual Work: (10 minutes)

Students will be given a sort. Students will cut out cards and paste under living or non-living.

At the bottom of the sort they will write what they know about living and nonliving things.

Conclusion: (3-5 minutes)

Before leaving for Resource Students will be given an exit ticket. They will write down a fact they have learned and a question they may still have about the topic.
